Summary

This is another one of those “they should teach us this in school!” books。 It turns out that almost everything you know about breathing is wrong and it’s contributing to a multitude of ills in our modern life。 Basically—love your nose! Noses are a use it or lose it organ。 If you don’t nose breathe, your nose will become congested and your only option will be to mouth breathe。 The problems with mouth breathing are pretty much limitless。 Reduced CO2 content in alveoli of the lungs, reduced oxygenation of cells and tissues of all vital organs of the human body, anxiety, stress, sleeping problems, slouching and muscular tension, biochemical stress due to dirty air (viruses, bacteria, toxic and harmful chemicals) entering into the Noses are a use it or lose it organ。 If you don’t nose breathe, your nose will become congested and your only option will be to mouth breathe。 The problems with mouth breathing are pretty much limitless。 Reduced CO2 content in alveoli of the lungs, reduced oxygenation of cells and tissues of all vital organs of the human body, anxiety, stress, sleeping problems, slouching and muscular tension, biochemical stress due to dirty air (viruses, bacteria, toxic and harmful chemicals) entering into the lungs, possible infections due to absence of the self-immunization effect, the list goes on。I recommend this book to anyone interested in the lost art of breathing, suffers from breathing problems, snores, nose blockages or participates in any sports or physical activities。 I recommend this book to anyone interested in the lost art of breathing, suffers from breathing problems, snores, nose blockages or participates in any sports or physical activities。 By the way, the perfect breath is to inhale 5。5 seconds, then exhale for 5。5 seconds。 You can try this for a few minutes or an hour! Looks like it is great for health and great for meditative purposes。 。。。more

I'm a fan of James Nestor, but I just don't think this topic was interesting enough for me。 The book is approximately 200 pages long - the last 80 pages are indexes and a sort of Appendix to explain the breathing techniques touched upon in the book。 I do agree that this is a subject worth studying more。 In my own case, I have noticed that if I become congested with a cold or allergies and am forced to breathe through my mouth, my immune system gets really weak。 My throat gets really sore, I don' I'm a fan of James Nestor, but I just don't think this topic was interesting enough for me。 The book is approximately 200 pages long - the last 80 pages are indexes and a sort of Appendix to explain the breathing techniques touched upon in the book。 I do agree that this is a subject worth studying more。 In my own case, I have noticed that if I become congested with a cold or allergies and am forced to breathe through my mouth, my immune system gets really weak。 My throat gets really sore, I don't get restful sleep and I feel miserable。 Since reading the book, I have been more conscious to breathe in and out slowly through my nose。 I think I would have enjoyed reading a magazine article about this topic instead of a full novel。 。。。more

I don’t think the book is quite as bad as my 2 star rating, but I really didn’t want to give it a 3 star。 It’s not a bad book but I wasn’t blown away by it。 I enjoyed some of the science and history behind breathing through the nose over breathing through the mouth。 I thought the CO2 theory was interesting。 Those interesting and cool portions litter every segment of the book。 But。 Some of the book is just weird。 He says at the end that breathing can’t cure everything but the whole book makes you I don’t think the book is quite as bad as my 2 star rating, but I really didn’t want to give it a 3 star。 It’s not a bad book but I wasn’t blown away by it。 I enjoyed some of the science and history behind breathing through the nose over breathing through the mouth。 I thought the CO2 theory was interesting。 Those interesting and cool portions litter every segment of the book。 But。 Some of the book is just weird。 He says at the end that breathing can’t cure everything but the whole book makes you feel like it can。 At the end he said breathing can’t cure stage 4 Cancer, but he makes claims and sites experiments claiming to cure emphysema。 Cure may not be the word he uses in the book but it’s definitely implied。 Also he heavily implies that breathing can straighten a person with scoliosis back。 One person he quoted as having 80% curvature of the spine。I can’t express how comical I found that。 More than that he explained that erectile dysfunction can be cured through breathing! I told the guys at work that and the breathing in and out of the nose became a huge joke between all of us!Then he tells a few crazy stories of people doing breathing exercises where a man began running around a room on all fours acting like an animal in a rage。 In the same session a woman screams in a baby voice followed by a demonic voice。 Now。 Honestly。 I almost stopped reading by this point but I was so close to the finish line that I just powered through。 I can’t say the writing was terrible。 Let’s say it was just average。 So。 Overall, with the average writing, I felt like the weird and unbelievable aspects slightly outweigh the cool and interesting portions of the book。 That’s why I gave it 2 stars instead of 3 stars。 。。。more

A most unusual collection of fascinating facts about an activity we do with barely a thought。 It was good that the author did more than collect interviews and discuss studies, he actually dove into to the techniques。

Disclaimer: I do teach yoga, and pranayama is part of yoga, so I came to this book primed less skeptically than others。 Not because I'm necessarily more gullible, but because I have seen and felt the difference a breathing practice makes in my own life。 The big takeaway: there's nothing in this book that is going to do harm。 Some may help。 A reader should approach this book with a curious mind, willing to experiment to try for themselves。As a yoga person, I have been taught pranayama in texts FA Disclaimer: I do teach yoga, and pranayama is part of yoga, so I came to this book primed less skeptically than others。 Not because I'm necessarily more gullible, but because I have seen and felt the difference a breathing practice makes in my own life。 The big takeaway: there's nothing in this book that is going to do harm。 Some may help。 A reader should approach this book with a curious mind, willing to experiment to try for themselves。As a yoga person, I have been taught pranayama in texts FAR more 'woo woo' than this--the nadis, the marmas, etc。 So something that even ATTEMPTS to bring the science to the table is a great thing, as far as I'm concerned。 People have critiqued this book for being a bit light on the science/cherrypicking instead of looking for longitudinal meta studies。 This is a fair critique, but it also reveals a problem he openly talks about in the book: there just ISN'T that much research out there。 It's a chicken/egg paradox。 How can you scientifically prove something when no one has done the science? Does the fact that no one has done the science MEAN that the science isn't worth doing? That's a possibility, but I know a bit too much about the scientific grant proposal process to believe that what gets funding is an accurate measure of what is worth studying。 I hope that the popularity of this book itself inspires more science to be done, so that we will have answers, either way, about the efficacy of breathing and health。 It's a fun read。 You won't learn all there is to know, or even every possible breathing technique out there (yoga has bunches not covered in this book)。 But you may be curious, you may try something out and again, it's breathing。 It's easy, accessible, and basically free。 Why not give it a chance? 。。。more

Life-changing。 As an individual with a breathing condition, many aspects of the book showed examples of how it can be improved for anyone。 It gave knowledge upon an art which has truly been lost。 Enjoyed how it was written, portraying a journey of someone overcoming obstacles to change his lifestyle。 Science, history and spirituality all combine here to make us appreciate our breath more。'SHUT YOUR MOUTH' Life-changing。 As an individual with a breathing condition, many aspects of the book showed examples of how it can be improved for anyone。 It gave knowledge upon an art which has truly been lost。 Enjoyed how it was written, portraying a journey of someone overcoming obstacles to change his lifestyle。 Science, history and spirituality all combine here to make us appreciate our breath more。'SHUT YOUR MOUTH' 。。。more

Might be a game changer for me since I have some breathing difficulties due to a deviated septum (thanks Karate!)。 Also offers actionable advice and ancient breathing techniques I plan on incorporating into my daily life。 Highly recommend if you’re interested in things such as health, longevity, changing your body, and ancient yoga techniques。

This book is very very good。 Breathing is simple, yet very unnoticed。 In COVID, how to breath more? Read this book。 It is worth a lot。

Brian

Surprisingly good and interesting。 A bit hard to take something away, though。 As in, which method to try, and what is it supposed to do? The appendix helps somewhat though

Nancy

Way too out there for me。 There may be some truth in here but it’s written like a bunch of hooey。Added 1 to my reading challenge to compensate。

I have been getting into pranayama yoga lately, and I happened to see this book at the local bookstore and I knew I had to read it。 This is a really comprehensive collection of the different histories of breathwork and study。 At times it doesn't feel like there was enough research, but also that there was a significant amount of self-study, if that makes sense。 I loved hearing about Nestor's experiences trying out different techniques, and at the end of the book there is an Appendix so you can t I have been getting into pranayama yoga lately, and I happened to see this book at the local bookstore and I knew I had to read it。 This is a really comprehensive collection of the different histories of breathwork and study。 At times it doesn't feel like there was enough research, but also that there was a significant amount of self-study, if that makes sense。 I loved hearing about Nestor's experiences trying out different techniques, and at the end of the book there is an Appendix so you can try some of them on your own。 。。。more

Wow。 Eloquently written and beautifully researched, I hope to remember half of what I have learned in this book。 Just WOW。

An absolutely amazing book! I never realized how bad mouth-breathing is, and I've been practicing almost all the breathing exercises given in the book! Disclaimer: make sure to start out slow, especially with the limited breathing during workouts。 I tried to run a mile the first day I read this book while holding my breath, and I got to around a quarter of a mile before I almost collapsed (totally my fault, the book warned against this HAHA)! This book would be a total disaster without the last, practical part。 There are few contradictions that were not resolved, many anecdotal evidences, many plain dangerous techniques described。 My absolute favorite was an attempt to explain mitochondrial metabolism by the concepts of Chi and Prana。 Overall, a very unique read。

Jenna

I love a good science-lite book, but this was a bit too light on the science for me。 It was still kinda interesting to read though。

Mohammad Abbas

Relies a lot on anecdotal evidence, some of the claims are ridiculous but there is some merit to more conscious breathing。

The more we gnaw, the more stem cells release, the more bone density and growth we'll trigger, the younger we'll look and the better we'll breathe。 The more we gnaw, the more stem cells release, the more bone density and growth we'll trigger, the younger we'll look and the better we'll breathe。 。。。more

This book has completely changed how I breathe every single day after 23 years of giving zero thought to the air going in and out of my body。 It’s a comprehensive look at the science and cultural practices of breath work that influence serious illness as well as overall well-being。 I wish I had read this book years ago。 It has helped me consciously change my breathing habits and feel ten times more energetic, focused, and calm throughout each day。 Read this book to understand the profound impact This book has completely changed how I breathe every single day after 23 years of giving zero thought to the air going in and out of my body。 It’s a comprehensive look at the science and cultural practices of breath work that influence serious illness as well as overall well-being。 I wish I had read this book years ago。 It has helped me consciously change my breathing habits and feel ten times more energetic, focused, and calm throughout each day。 Read this book to understand the profound impact breathing has on the human body and see where you fall in the spectrum of breathers。 。。。more

This is probably one of my favorite types of books。 Physiology and science presented in a consumable format。 The power of breath is real and Nestor does an excellent job presenting it。

Fascinating。 I will definitely go back and read this again。

Didn’t go as in depth as I would have liked, but very well written。 I’ll certainly be looking deeper into the topic。

Should be mandatory in schoolI heard Joe Rogan mention this book and he made it sound interesting。 He didn't do it justice lol。 This book is absolutely amazing。 It's jammed full of information and the techniques at the end are easy to understand。 Should be mandatory in schoolI heard Joe Rogan mention this book and he made it sound interesting。 He didn't do it justice lol。 This book is absolutely amazing。 It's jammed full of information and the techniques at the end are easy to understand。 。。。more

I listened to this audiobook mainly on my runs - as I was desperately swallowing air with my mouth gaped open - until I heard the author basically make the claim that "if you breathe through your mouth, you are slowly killing yourself"。 And I immediately tried to seal my lips and take slow breathes through my nose - which is, according to the author, a lot of more natural and beneficial to our health。 To save you time, this book basically makes two claims (based on a mix of okay science and susp I listened to this audiobook mainly on my runs - as I was desperately swallowing air with my mouth gaped open - until I heard the author basically make the claim that "if you breathe through your mouth, you are slowly killing yourself"。 And I immediately tried to seal my lips and take slow breathes through my nose - which is, according to the author, a lot of more natural and beneficial to our health。 To save you time, this book basically makes two claims (based on a mix of okay science and suspicious anecdotes like a lady in a park told him one time):1。 breathing through your nose is better for you than breathing through your mouth。2。 sometimes we do not need more air, we need more CO2。 It is not revolutionary nor entirely convincing scientifically, but it made me a bit more self-concious about breathing。 So, somewhat helpful? 。。。more

This was a fascinating book about the importance of breath written by a journalist who has struggled with breathing issues himself。 I took some notes to remind myself of some of his points:-Bigger brains, sticky-out noses, and smaller mouths/nasal passages have caused us to get stuffed up, snore, wheeze, and choke。-Detrimental effect of mouth breathing: Increased blood pressure, increased pulse, decreased body temperature, lack of mental clarity, physical malformations in a matter of months。-Ins This was a fascinating book about the importance of breath written by a journalist who has struggled with breathing issues himself。 I took some notes to remind myself of some of his points:-Bigger brains, sticky-out noses, and smaller mouths/nasal passages have caused us to get stuffed up, snore, wheeze, and choke。-Detrimental effect of mouth breathing: Increased blood pressure, increased pulse, decreased body temperature, lack of mental clarity, physical malformations in a matter of months。-Insomnia = breathing problems-Nostrils cycle-Noses have erectile tissue-Nadi shadhana - alternate nostril breathing-Left nostril - puts on the breaks, parasympathetic-Right nostril - accelerator, sympathetic-The perfect breath is inhale for 5。5 seconds and exhale for 5。5 seconds。 -Prayers & chants match this length-Breath less-More CO2, less O2-Westin A。 Price - Soft food, lack of chewing-Snoring, ADHD, sleep apnea, and asthma are all related to obstructions in the mouth-Tummo breathing-Amygdala gone - no fear except when given CO2。 Feel like can't breathe。-CO2 levels, not O2 is what the body is monitoring and regulating。-CO2 therapy1。 Close your mouth2。 Breathe through your nose3。 Exhale completely4。 Chew5。 Breathe more on occasion6。 Hold your breath 。。。more
