Summary

What do you see when you look in the mirror, Mei? Do you see beauty?

We see eyes that point toward the sun, that give us the warmth and joy of a thousand rays when you smile。 We see hair as inky black and smooth as a peaceful night sky。 We see skin brushed with gold。

This joyful and lyrical picture book from New York Times-bestselling author Eva Chen is a moving ode to the immigrant experience, as well as a manifesto of self-love for Asian American children。

“They don’t know that each of our golden flames flickers distinctly。 That our stories are infinitely unique。”

Steph

“People will call you different with one breath and then say that we all look the same with the next angry breath。 But they don’t know that each of our golden flames flickers distinctly。 That our stories are infinitely unique。”

Molly

A beautiful celebration of Chinese American culture, recommended for children who are from this culture or would like to learn more about it。

I received an Audio Advance Reader Copy of this picturebook in exchange for an honest review from Netgalley。 Expected publication is: February 2022This book, perhaps, suffered from the fact that I just recently read another picture book dealing with the exact same topic and couldn't help but compare the two works。 There is also the fact that I got only an audiobook version of this and so have no visuals to include in my review。 If it weren't for those issues, I might have easily given this a 5-s I received an Audio Advance Reader Copy of this picturebook in exchange for an honest review from Netgalley。 Expected publication is: February 2022This book, perhaps, suffered from the fact that I just recently read another picture book dealing with the exact same topic and couldn't help but compare the two works。 There is also the fact that I got only an audiobook version of this and so have no visuals to include in my review。 If it weren't for those issues, I might have easily given this a 5-star review, but in comparison, it did feel like there was a bit of whimsy lacking that would have made it a better read for the target audience。 I did, however, really enjoy this。 The audiobook does add music to great effect and it also includes an Author's note that really delves into the need for Asian children to love themselves especially during this time of heightened Asian hate。 It's important for all children to see themselves in a positive light in the media they consume, so something like this is always needed。 。。。more

Beautiful book - words wise。 I love the whole story。 It's beautiful and inclusive。 While a story of discovery and diversity its something for everyone。 Very comforting and affirming - a wonderful story for a parent to read to their child。 Would be lovely for a school as well。 I'm definitely getting this for my library。 The audiobook is lovely, and I hope it'll be made available for purchase soon as well。 I can't wait to get my hands on a physical copy so I can see the illustrations。 (I'll do my Beautiful book - words wise。 I love the whole story。 It's beautiful and inclusive。 While a story of discovery and diversity its something for everyone。 Very comforting and affirming - a wonderful story for a parent to read to their child。 Would be lovely for a school as well。 I'm definitely getting this for my library。 The audiobook is lovely, and I hope it'll be made available for purchase soon as well。 I can't wait to get my hands on a physical copy so I can see the illustrations。 (I'll do my best to update this when i do)。The eaudioarc I recieved was from netgallery for an honest review。 Thank you to the author/publisher(s)。 。。。more

This is a very short book with a positive message。 An affirmation that you are special because you are different。I received a copy of the audiobook- it is filled with background sound effects, really drawing you into the story。Because I only received an audio copy, I cannot attest to the pictures。 I received a copy in exchange for an honest review。

Good message and pretty

AUDIOBOOK VERSIONThis book is amazing, even though, for me, listening to an audiobook of a picture book is hard。 Eva Chen, the author, narrates this fast read。 While I miss the illustrations, she takes me on the journey with her。Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for making this audiobook available for an honest review。

(I was given access to the audiobook, but not the pictures) It was very odd to hear only the text of a picture book without seeing the pictures。 It definitely felt like getting only half the information。 On the other hand, it is interesting in that pictures often shift your view of the words on the page, so it's interesting to focus only on this part。 The text is lovely, able to describe real world situations felt and experienced by the author, while also evoking emotion and beauty。 I am excited (I was given access to the audiobook, but not the pictures) It was very odd to hear only the text of a picture book without seeing the pictures。 It definitely felt like getting only half the information。 On the other hand, it is interesting in that pictures often shift your view of the words on the page, so it's interesting to focus only on this part。 The text is lovely, able to describe real world situations felt and experienced by the author, while also evoking emotion and beauty。 I am excited to see the pictures。 。。。more

Audio review - thank you to Libro。fm for access to this title。It’s difficult to provide an audio review for picture books, but the story alone, read by the author with a note explaining the autobiographical impulse to create this work, is well done。 An #ownvoices work that covers so many topics impacting children, while uplifting the beauty of otherness within the same breath。Family and love are motifs running throughout “I Am Golden,” as the young protagonist’s family come from China to the US, Audio review - thank you to Libro。fm for access to this title。It’s difficult to provide an audio review for picture books, but the story alone, read by the author with a note explaining the autobiographical impulse to create this work, is well done。 An #ownvoices work that covers so many topics impacting children, while uplifting the beauty of otherness within the same breath。Family and love are motifs running throughout “I Am Golden,” as the young protagonist’s family come from China to the US, bringing their culture and instilling it within the home。 Like a fish swimming between streams, she jumps into mainstream culture at school, switching from Mandarin to English and code switching without realizing this is what she is doing, until faced with hatred and discrimination by a popular kid at school。Issues of otherness and what it means to hold on to your family culture whilst facing attacks that isolate you based on identity are not new and, unfortunately, very prevalent。 Yet the feeling of love and positivity radiating around the very culture and family keeps the story from being bleak and does the very thing the “popular kid” attempts to do: it opens doors for readers to see that people are different, and that is beautiful。Highly recommend the audio as an accompaniment to the picture book for public libraries in kits。 。。。more

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an audio copy to listen to and review。 I adore this book。 As the mother to children who are Chinese and Caucasian I love the beautiful way Eva Chen celebrates her daughter Mei。 She may look different from others, but looking different is just as beautiful as looking the same。 I can't wait to add a physical copy of this to my home and classroom library。 Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an audio copy to listen to and review。 I adore this book。 As the mother to children who are Chinese and Caucasian I love the beautiful way Eva Chen celebrates her daughter Mei。 She may look different from others, but looking different is just as beautiful as looking the same。 I can't wait to add a physical copy of this to my home and classroom library。 。。。more

I had an ALC of this book, and I listened to it with my 8-year-old daughter。 It was a beautiful story to listen to。 To be honest, the author's note at the end of the story that I found the most inspiring。 I will be interested to read this book once it is published and see how it feels then。 The story made its impact, as my daughter said that she was golden as I tucked her into bed。 I had an ALC of this book, and I listened to it with my 8-year-old daughter。 It was a beautiful story to listen to。 To be honest, the author's note at the end of the story that I found the most inspiring。 I will be interested to read this book once it is published and see how it feels then。 The story made its impact, as my daughter said that she was golden as I tucked her into bed。 。。。more

I did a great disservice to this book by listening to the audio and not reading the print edition。 This is a very short text, basically it is just a love letter from a parent to a child。 However, the authors note at the end adds so much more meaning and really resonated with me。 As an American teacher, teaching international students in China (and Mei is part of my Chinese name !) , the book was especially meaningful。 I would certainly incorporate it into my classroom library, no matter what age I did a great disservice to this book by listening to the audio and not reading the print edition。 This is a very short text, basically it is just a love letter from a parent to a child。 However, the authors note at the end adds so much more meaning and really resonated with me。 As an American teacher, teaching international students in China (and Mei is part of my Chinese name !) , the book was especially meaningful。 I would certainly incorporate it into my classroom library, no matter what age I am teaching, if I ever teach back in the US again。The audiobook gets 1。5 stars - it’s not a book。 But the story overall, with the author’s note earns 4。Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ALC of this book in exchange for my honest opinions。 。。。more

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the advanced electronic audio copy of this wonderful book。 This self-affirming story beautifully combines great writing and an immigrant experience。 A must have for any classroom library。 Looking forward to sharing this great book with my students when it is published。

Beautiful and honest。 An absolute joy, inspiring and a must read。 The words and the art are equally inspiring。
