Summary

A prominent Viennese psychiatrist before the war, Viktor Frankl was uniquely able to observe the way that both he and others in Auschwitz coped (or didn't) with the experience。 He noticed that it was the men who comforted others and who gave away their last piece of bread who survived the longest - and who offered proof that everything can be taken away from us except the ability to choose our attitude in any given set of circumstances。 The sort of person the concentration camp prisoner became was the result of an inner decision and not of camp influences alone。 Only those who allowed their inner hold on their moral and spiritual selves to subside eventually fell victim to the camp's degenerating influence - while those who made a victory of those experiences turned them into an inner triumph。 Frankl came to believe man's deepest desire is to search for meaning and purpose。

This outstanding work offers us all a way to transcend suffering and find significance in the art of living。

I wish I read this one instead of listening! There were parts I wanted to go back and re-read just to think through the concept he was talking about。

I loved the first part。 However, part two was too psychological for me: he was explaining about his school of therapy。

I really loved this book。 It was really impactful and made me reevaluate my own outlook on life。 I really appreciated the fact that he used the concentration camps as an example for his views on this topic but never got too gruesome or relied on shock or horror to get his point across。 He just gave his side of the story and examined what he saw while there。 He went over how people responded to the circumstances they were in and brought in some insight into what he considered to be a reason worth I really loved this book。 It was really impactful and made me reevaluate my own outlook on life。 I really appreciated the fact that he used the concentration camps as an example for his views on this topic but never got too gruesome or relied on shock or horror to get his point across。 He just gave his side of the story and examined what he saw while there。 He went over how people responded to the circumstances they were in and brought in some insight into what he considered to be a reason worth living。 Why to go on and to struggle。 。。。more

I was under the impression that this book would be more of a personal essay and (to no one’s fault but my own) didn’t think to consider Viktor’s profession as a psychiatrist would play a significant role in sharing his story。 Evidently, Viktor’s personal experiences in the concentration camps is a testament that allows his research to carry substantial weight。 His professional perspective on the meaning of life is undoubtedly valuable and he was able to articulate words that have always just bee I was under the impression that this book would be more of a personal essay and (to no one’s fault but my own) didn’t think to consider Viktor’s profession as a psychiatrist would play a significant role in sharing his story。 Evidently, Viktor’s personal experiences in the concentration camps is a testament that allows his research to carry substantial weight。 His professional perspective on the meaning of life is undoubtedly valuable and he was able to articulate words that have always just been scattered thoughts in my own head。 For myself, this book was hard to read - particularly the second half of the book。 It was difficult to stay engaged with his style of writing as much of the sentences are both long and packed with scientific jargon。 So much so that it did make this read feel laborious。I don’t think I necessarily learned anything novel, but I can appreciate the simple truths his research has to offer。 This book shifts into more theoretical textbook-like psychology, so I am more inclined to recommend this book to those who are well-equipped and interested in that type of discussion! By no means is the book not worth a read, but it is most definitely not a traditional memoir for those seeking that style for their next read。 。。。more

_ listened to a summary of it as an audiobook _ A beautifully devastating book that covers the beauty of life in-spite of its hardships, particularly during the Auschwitz period。 Would definitely buy this as a hard copy and read it in its entirety。

A strange reading experience。 At first, the first part seemed interesting, though there are major problems there in terms of it being a memoir/autobiography。 Upon reflection, I despise almost everything about this book。

Worth reading if you are studying psychology or philosophy。 I found the author's behavior in the book to be contradictory。 Yoga and Logotherapy have a lot in common, but Yoga is thousands of years older。 Worth reading if you are studying psychology or philosophy。 I found the author's behavior in the book to be contradictory。 Yoga and Logotherapy have a lot in common, but Yoga is thousands of years older。 。。。more
