Summary

。。。more

。。 。。。more

。。。more

As a theatre student I was introduced to this book, and even years later I find myself returning to this story every couple of years。 It is a masterclass in humanity's flaws and willingness to do what they need to survive。 This is by far my favourite tragic comedy, an almost larger than life story wrapped in a gauze of grim depression。 I vehemently recommend this book。 As a theatre student I was introduced to this book, and even years later I find myself returning to this story every couple of years。 It is a masterclass in humanity's flaws and willingness to do what they need to survive。 This is by far my favourite tragic comedy, an almost larger than life story wrapped in a gauze of grim depression。 I vehemently recommend this book。 。。。more

Featured in my Jan 2021 Wrap UpThis is a fantastic play as it explores a fundamental mechanic of theatre — what would happen if all but one of the characters turned evil。 It's paranoia on stage, and refreshingly, one of few plays that doesn't hinge action on the shock-value of sex and drug use。 It appears trite and contrived at first but it's not aiming for realism, it's attacking an ideal — that even the most pleasant community can be run into the ground by bribery and vendetta。 It misses 5* on Featured in my Jan 2021 Wrap UpThis is a fantastic play as it explores a fundamental mechanic of theatre — what would happen if all but one of the characters turned evil。 It's paranoia on stage, and refreshingly, one of few plays that doesn't hinge action on the shock-value of sex and drug use。 It appears trite and contrived at first but it's not aiming for realism, it's attacking an ideal — that even the most pleasant community can be run into the ground by bribery and vendetta。 It misses 5* only in being too simple and short to be deep enough to have wider messages, but an adaptation of this that goes beyond it could be a real hit。 。。。more

This is, for some odd reason, the first Dürrenmatt I have read and I am very glad I did。After having gotten around in the world, 7 husbands and aquiring a fortune, Claire Zachanassian return to her home town of Güllen, a town that has hit rock bottom over the years and has gone bankrupt。 The old lady is willing to help, but only under one condition: The town must execute her childhood sweetheart, the chandler Ill, who has done great harm to her。。。All together, the play has this odd feeling to it This is, for some odd reason, the first Dürrenmatt I have read and I am very glad I did。After having gotten around in the world, 7 husbands and aquiring a fortune, Claire Zachanassian return to her home town of Güllen, a town that has hit rock bottom over the years and has gone bankrupt。 The old lady is willing to help, but only under one condition: The town must execute her childhood sweetheart, the chandler Ill, who has done great harm to her。。。All together, the play has this odd feeling to it that makes a tragic comedy such as this one a proper pleasure。 Even though while reading, it felt as if everything was happening very suddenly, I believe seeing it on stage as it is supposed to, will make this a positive instead of a negative experience。 The characters are seemingly purposefully rather flat and have very simple, but very comprehensible reasoning, and while Dürrenmatt always says he does not intend to be critical of society in his plays but merely writes down a plot, he has managed to write a tragic, odd yet rather fun parable on capitalism。 。。。more

I had o read this book for german class a few years ago and I had never enjoyed a school lecture as much as this one before。 As the genre 'tragic comedy' suggests, though the play addresses serious issues in our society and human behaviour, the whole play is written with so much wit and sense of humour that it wasn´t painful or sad to read like the genre 'tragedy' would suggest。 In a materialistic society in which the human really only thinks of themself before anyone else, this book diggs deep I had o read this book for german class a few years ago and I had never enjoyed a school lecture as much as this one before。 As the genre 'tragic comedy' suggests, though the play addresses serious issues in our society and human behaviour, the whole play is written with so much wit and sense of humour that it wasn´t painful or sad to read like the genre 'tragedy' would suggest。 In a materialistic society in which the human really only thinks of themself before anyone else, this book diggs deep into our most selfish and disgusting character traits。 The temptation the town has to resist and the slow change of the individual members of the society make the situation so real, so comprehensible and yet so awful to think about。 The play not only gives society a mirror to reflect but also challenges every viewer to be honest and ask themself: WHAT WOULD I DO?I think that it is great book to go in discussions about with others and yourself, to learn more about yourself, to have a better understanding of our society and last but not least to enjoy the humour that Friedrich Dürrenmatt was so pleasently gifted with。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I really liked this bookFor me, it was an easy and fun read, because of the style this book is written in。 Because it's a play, you read those awesome parts where scenery is changing。 I really liked those paragraphs, because they make the atmosphere less serious and more humorous- at least for me。Although I like detailed descriptions of landscapes and surroundings, I loved that in this book, you are just reading dialogues。 Dialogues without "he says","he asks" and stuff。 It's something completel I really liked this bookFor me, it was an easy and fun read, because of the style this book is written in。 Because it's a play, you read those awesome parts where scenery is changing。 I really liked those paragraphs, because they make the atmosphere less serious and more humorous- at least for me。Although I like detailed descriptions of landscapes and surroundings, I loved that in this book, you are just reading dialogues。 Dialogues without "he says","he asks" and stuff。 It's something completely different and I enjoyed it!In addition to that, I really enjoyed the characters of this book。 Some things they said were really funny。 Also, I like how they behave in that situation of the book。 At first everybody is like: "what?! We wouldn't harm you, Ill!" and in the end, they -obviously- kill him。 They were so blinded because of the treasure waiting for them and were like "ah, fuck it"。The whole character Claire Zachanassian is so odd, I love it。 She has 3 husbands while we are reading this book, the names of her employees are hilarious and she's just such a boss and doesn't care at all。The story on general is kind of weird and I adore it。 I think my favourite scenes are the ones, where the 4 residents are acting like trees and animal。 This is genuinely hilarious。 The only thing, I'm a bit sad about, ist he end。 I was worried, when I got to the third act, because I thought the ending won't be as good as I would like。I would have loved to have more information about Ill's death, but as it's a play, I get why we don't get to read a whole scene about murder。And personally, I didn't really enjoyed the song of the residents in the last scene。But all in all, I really liked this book and now I am looking forward to read "The Physicists" by Friedrich Dürrenmatt。 。。。more
