Summary

The first ten lies they tell you in high school。

"Speak up for yourself—we want to know what you have to say。"

From the first moment of her freshman year at Merryweather High, Melinda knows this is a big fat lie, part of the nonsense of high school。 She is friendless, outcast, because she busted an end-of-summer party by calling the cops, so now nobody will talk to her, let alone listen to her。 As time passes, she becomes increasingly isolated and practically stops talking altogether。 Only her art class offers any solace, and it is through her work on an art project that she is finally able to face what really happened at that terrible party: she was raped by an upperclassman, a guy who still attends Merryweather and is still a threat to her。 Her healing process has just begun when she has another violent encounter with him。 But this time Melinda fights back, refuses to be silent, and thereby achieves a measure of vindication。

In Laurie Halse Anderson's powerful novel, an utterly believable heroine with a bitterly ironic voice delivers a blow to the hypocritical world of high school。 She speaks for many a disenfranchised teenager while demonstrating the importance of speaking up for oneself。

Speak was a 1999 National Book Award Finalist for Young People's Literature。

Cried but it was definitely worth it。 Would even consider this my favourite book。

Really amazing。 Seeing not only how what Melinda affected her but how it affected every aspect of her life was something so powerful to read。 Her thoughts and hesitations felt so real and it, along with some peoples reactions, really accurately represented what happens in real life。 I also really loved the writing style of this book。 I recommend everyone reads this book in their life。

I really liked Melinda’s character and how the book is written。 The chapters (?) are super short which I liked。 Nothing dragged on。

I’m so glad I finally got to read speak, it is most definitely one of my favourite books。 It touches on topics that are so incredibly serious (SA, rape, trauma, mental health +more), in such a compelling way。 I enjoyed the writing style so much and I never wanted to put it down。 Awaiting to watch the movie at some point, hopefully it’s just as good!“when people don’t express themselves, they die one piece at a time”

I really enjoyed this book。 It goes through a very realistic story of a young girl who has gone through a traumatic experience, and is scared to talk to anyone about it。 She worries that they won't care or won't believe her if she were to tell them。 You follow her through her journey of trying to accept what happened to her, and learning to get over it。 I really enjoyed this book。 It goes through a very realistic story of a young girl who has gone through a traumatic experience, and is scared to talk to anyone about it。 She worries that they won't care or won't believe her if she were to tell them。 You follow her through her journey of trying to accept what happened to her, and learning to get over it。 。。。more

This has been one of my favorite books so far that I had to read for school。 Although I am glad I waited to be assigned reading this until I was much older and could take deeper and more serious topics, I do still wish I would have read it, although traumatized at that age, when I was in Middle School going into High school just like the main character Melinda was。 My absolute favorite aspect of this book was the way it was written。 It was written the same way I think most Young adults speak to This has been one of my favorite books so far that I had to read for school。 Although I am glad I waited to be assigned reading this until I was much older and could take deeper and more serious topics, I do still wish I would have read it, although traumatized at that age, when I was in Middle School going into High school just like the main character Melinda was。 My absolute favorite aspect of this book was the way it was written。 It was written the same way I think most Young adults speak to themselves in their minds instead of thinking it was written at the point of view from a very obvious author。 In this book you go through the life of Melinda who starts declining in school, friendships and parent relationships because of something, assumingely silly, that she went through prematurely over her summer before starting high school。 Through it you become her advocate and want to yell for her as she continues to keep her mouth shut from terrible events that start to come back to her mind and she starts to relive。 Such a great book for those who often feel like they ose their voice and wish someone would fight for it and find it for them。 。。。more

A really hidden book。 Melinda was not the character you expected her to be and yet reading the challenges that she faced one wondered how she survived。 From the beginning, we knew her secret, but till the end, no one knew what happened with it。 The author hung us by a thread throughout the whole book revealing events that made you wonder and the ending was really open-ended。 I really really hope a sequel is made!

The topic of the book is important and teenagers do need to realize a lot of the stress fellow students go through。 I would recommend this book to help people understand some of the issues students face and my only issue is that a lot of the characters lack depth。 Some of the teachers are more stereotypical rather than realistic。

I thought this book was a really good book。 There was suspense but at the same time it was really emotional and shared a situation that a lot of people don’t talk about it, or can’t。 I definitely recommend this book。

Kaleb

It was an amazing book。 I really liked the parts where the conflict went on and she had to deal with her on problems。

Jade

I think the book was good because it talked about someone’s experience of high school。 The book also talked about getting through issues。 The book also talked about dealing with trauma。 I would recommend this book。

Speak is a great novel about a struggling teenage girl, and an incoming freshman。 This book brings a lot of light to mental health and real life problems that are often hidden, but are the reality of high school。 This is definitely a more mature level book, however。

I think the representation of what trauma and anxiety do to a person, while some may think extreme, is pretty accurate。 Watching Melinda grow and better herself after struggling can inspire readers, which is something I personally enjoy。 The plot itself is not exactly something I enjoy or find entertaining, but to those who like this kind of thing it can be a good read。

This reminded me of my niece and the hell of high school she is going through。 It's tough being a young teenager and not knowing who you are。 It opened my eyes a lot more to things my niece might be feeling or experiencing。 This reminded me of my niece and the hell of high school she is going through。 It's tough being a young teenager and not knowing who you are。 It opened my eyes a lot more to things my niece might be feeling or experiencing。 。。。more

I liked this book。 It shows the life of a freshman girl try to live her life while dealing with trauma。 This book lets the reader resonate with the writers words and her experience going through high school。 I would definitely recommend for parents to read as well as new teens。

I think that reading speak is very important for many teens。 It got very “in depth” and personal to what happens after such a traumatizing experience。 She shares struggles that sadly a lot of students go through in high school。

First off, I want to point out why I rated this a 3。 It is a book that garners much insight and awareness of abuse/psychological difficulties。 I am not trying to oversight that, but I had a hard time with the plot of the book itself。 I am not gonna spoil it。 Melinda is a character one could say her emotions are on her sleeve for the readers to see。 I am not talking about what other characters in the book perceive her。 I am talking about what the readers see of her actions。 While reading this boo First off, I want to point out why I rated this a 3。 It is a book that garners much insight and awareness of abuse/psychological difficulties。 I am not trying to oversight that, but I had a hard time with the plot of the book itself。 I am not gonna spoil it。 Melinda is a character one could say her emotions are on her sleeve for the readers to see。 I am not talking about what other characters in the book perceive her。 I am talking about what the readers see of her actions。 While reading this book I noticed that Melinda seems very restless, confused, and nervous around her peers。 This will be explained as the book pans out further。 Initially, it really does seem due to her family interactions。 In this regard, I highly recommend the book。 I like the possible real-world applications of how teenagers behave。 It is well done。This book is a wonderful slice-of-life genre。 It fits this well。 I like how the author had Melinda interact with her peers and dysfunctional family。 Adolescents struggle a lot in middle school and high school with social interactions。 If you are looking for a good read, that your anxious/confused child can read come no further。 This may be a good read。 The psychological adaptations Melinda goes through and finding her potential help define Melinda。 。。。more

SOOOOOO BESTIE!!!! This book was really good! I didn’t expect the ending lol and the book hooked me up。 I didn’t get in to a reading slump with this (ikr! I’m shocked too!)。 I would read this again, I finished reading in September 2021 after like a week of starting this book。 My English teacher actually recommended it and gave me the book to read。 I finished it real fast, except that I had school 🙃。 And also, it wasn’t as what I expected, I thought the ending would be a little bit more horrible SOOOOOO BESTIE!!!!
