It’s business as usual for our coworker companions。 Between exorcisms and festivals and chickening out, there’s no shortage of fun, but a surprising dearth of progressive storytelling。Yes, asking for something to happen in a comedy romance book that is looking to mine the most it can out of going nowhere as slowly as possible is a bit much and the jokes are pretty fun, but there’s no getting around how much this feels like the last volume, just without the beetle。Still, it’s a good time and that It’s business as usual for our coworker companions。 Between exorcisms and festivals and chickening out, there’s no shortage of fun, but a surprising dearth of progressive storytelling。Yes, asking for something to happen in a comedy romance book that is looking to mine the most it can out of going nowhere as slowly as possible is a bit much and the jokes are pretty fun, but there’s no getting around how much this feels like the last volume, just without the beetle。Still, it’s a good time and that’s enough to get the reader invested, so no complaints there。 By the time we’re barely ten pages in, Igarashi’s grandfather has overloaded her with beans and they end up making bulletholes in the walls once that story’s played out。 It’s just that sort of story。That level of weird has been slowly creeping into the series, taken to its most ridiculous extreme during the spirit section where the most unlikely person turns out to be psychically attuned and ends up performing an impromptu exorcism。I do wish there had been more Tsukishika, who is here a little bit but doesn’t bring nearly as much of her weirdo energy to things。 The one panel of her during the magazine story gets amazing mileage from her character just showing up though。On the relationship side, I’m honestly having the most fun with Sakurai’s little brother and his unrequited crush on Igarashi’s adult friend Kurobe。 Even knowing where that wall slam story is going, it’s freaking adorable。 This storyline’s a treat for anybody who’s ever gone through a similar crush。Elsewhere nothing moves, as I noted。 There are some cute moments - the festival fireworks in particular are capped off by a great line from Igarashi。 She and Takeda continue to share some sweet moments that make the wait for their coupling more bearable。And while Kazama and Sakurai continue their dance (and are pretty obvious to one another), Kazama really botches it but good towards the end and it definitely feels like a major mistake is made。 Sakurai’s reaction is very believable, which might be why it’s so surprising。 They’re kind of more interesting than the leads at this point。3。5 stars - I was going to round this up until I realized that in terms of forward momentum there basically isn’t any and that leaves everybody in the exact same spot they were last time。 So, fun as it was, I think we’ll save the 4 star review for when something actually happens。 。。。more
