Summary

The international literary icon opens his eclectic closet: Here are photographs of Murakami's extensive and personal T-shirt collection, accompanied by essays that reveal a side of the writer rarely seen by the public。

Considered the world's most popular cult novelist (The Guardian), Haruki Murakami has written books that have galvanized millions around the world。 Many of his fans know about his 10,000-vinyl-record collection, and his obsession with running, but few have heard about a more intimate, and perhaps more unique, passion: his T-shirt-collecting habit。

In Murakami T, the famously reclusive novelist shows us his T-shirts--including gems from the Springsteen on Broadway show in NYC, to the Beach Boys concert in Honolulu, to the shirt that inspired the beloved short story Tony Takitani。 Accompanied by short, frank essays that have been translated into English for the first time, these photographs reveal much about Murakami's multifaceted and wonderfully eccentric persona。

“Is that really a book about Murakami’s favourite T-shirts? Good for him!”So read a text from my other half earlier on today when coming across this book in the house。 Well apparently when you are as successful as him you can seemingly publish a book on almost anything, after all we’re talking about a man who allegedly sold over 1 million copies of a single novel in his homeland, on the first week of release alone。The only thing more terrible than his taste in T-shirts is possibly his taste in m “Is that really a book about Murakami’s favourite T-shirts? This was an interesting book that I won in a Goodreads giveaway。 I was amazed at how many t-shirts he owns!

Quick read of a collection of essays Murakami wrote for a Japanese magazine, re: themes he found when looking through his t-shirt collection。 The book has charm for its slightness, plus some observational and biographical nuggets for fans of the author。 Good library borrow, and something I'll add to my collection when the paperback is released。 Quick read of a collection of essays Murakami wrote for a Japanese magazine, re: themes he found when looking through his t-shirt collection。 The book has charm for its slightness, plus some observational and biographical nuggets for fans of the author。 Good library borrow, and something I'll add to my collection when the paperback is released。 。。。more

Consists of 18 short essays which once published in 𝘗𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘺𝘦, a Japanese men's fashion magazine, these writings featured few random things associated with his T-shirts like food and booze, animals, music, superheroes or even a muse like how he found Tony Takitani at a thrift shop and wondering about who the heck is Tony Takitani that he ended up writing a fictional story about him。It feels so delightful to read his stories and how each T-shirt bringing a memorable fragment to his life-- a record hunting day, a thrift shop encounters, walking into an event, launching a book, running a marathon, meeting a friend, a beach visit, surfing or movies outing; these are all a story living in a piece of his T-shirt。 Might be underwhelming to few and the collection pretty ordinary too, but being a fan to the novelist, this was such an endearing read to me。 Few memorable T-shirts and stories that I love--1。 The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle's T-shirt that he gets from a reader who was inspired to create it after reading the novel2。 "Record Stores Are A Blast" story about his record stores hunting, jazz music and all those vinyl shirt designs3。 One of the running T-shirt during Murakami triathlon that he gets a lot of people asking; "So, Mr。 Murakami, you're sponsoring a marathon now?"4。 "A Book, Anyone?" story that revolves around reading and bookstores5。 "Keep Calm and Read Murakami" story on T-shirts related to his books; of his book launch and about his publisher (love both the Dance Dance Dance and Norwegian Wood shirts)Love that it also includes a bunch of his T-shirts (that Kafka on the Shore!) that didn't make it for an essay together with a series of his interviews at the back!(I wonder if he'll ever write something about his stubs of pencils collection, I would love to read that too)"𝘛-𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘳𝘵𝘴 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘸𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘰𝘶𝘵。 𝘐 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘴𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮。"Huge thanks to Pansing (Definitely Books) for this gifted copy! 。。。more

Upcycling at its finest! Like Murakami, I also have oodles of tshirts, some of which I’ve designed myself。 Some fit better than others; some have chocolate stains。 Ok, a lot of them have chocolate stains。 For literally years now, to make room in my closet, I’ve thought I’d like to make a memory quilt from the older ones。 But maybe a better idea would be to do what Murakami does here: photograph and get his memories about each shirt down on paper。 Brilliant。 Plus, the project will make him money Upcycling at its finest! This is a fun book for anyone who is a fan of Murakami。 It gives a little insight into his personality and lifestyle。

This is the greatest book about a t-shirt collection I have ever read。 This is also the only book about a t-shirt collection I have ever read。 It is an interesting window into Haruki Murakami’s world。 And t-shirts。

Ok, it is Murakami, so I bought it because I am one of those reader。 As I was buying it, I thought, why am I buying a book about tee shirts? There has to be some deeper meaning here, right? Nope, it is about certain tee shirts from his tee shirt collection and what they mean to him。 You learn he has lots of them, he doesn’t know what some of them mean, he has boxes filled with tee shirts, and many mean something to him。 I still enjoyed it。

A page turner, it's essay written by the one and only Haruki Murakami and translated by Philip Gabriel。 Talking about the collection of T shirts and picture of it。 The content being categorized as theme so we can enjoy it。 In the back there was interview from magazine that gave the idea to make the essay as a book。 As a fans of Murakami, this one is the easiest one to understand。 He make some jokes too。I also have several T shirts, mostly I bought because the writing or the design, and I wear it A page turner, it's essay written by the one and only Haruki Murakami and translated by Philip Gabriel。 Talking about the collection of T shirts and picture of it。 The content being categorized as theme so we can enjoy it。 In the back there was interview from magazine that gave the idea to make the essay as a book。 As a fans of Murakami, this one is the easiest one to understand。 He make some jokes too。I also have several T shirts, mostly I bought because the writing or the design, and I wear it without concern。 I think I should reorganize it because my cupboard already full。 。。。more

I kind of like when a successful artist gets to the point where they can just do whatever the hell they want and no one can tell them not to, like when Sting made a double lute and poetry album (not that it was any good really)。 So Murakami can release a book about his T shirt collection and people like me will buy it because we’ve already committed to reading every word he ever writes。 This book was fun and silly, but it was no Wind-up Bird Chronicles。

A fun book, comprised of Murakami’s t-shirt collection categorised and accompanied by personal essays detailing private life and his often eccentric motivations for purchase。 Recommended for an avid Murakami fan; an expansion on his existing work to carry you over to the release of his next novel。

The first time I met Haruki Murakami after queueing overnight for hours in the cold, he complimented my brother on his faded, dark blue-grey T-shirt。 It was from Uniqlo and featured a vintage Mickey Mouse。 Ever since then, I've known he's a T-shirt fan, so this particular book was really unsurprising to me。 I'm just surprised he doesn't seem to have mentioned having any Mickey shirts of his own (And now you know how to score a compliment from the giant of Japanese literature, just wear a tee tha The first time I met Haruki Murakami after queueing overnight for hours in the cold, he complimented my brother on his faded, dark blue-grey T-shirt。 It was from Uniqlo and featured a vintage Mickey Mouse。 Ever since then, I've known he's a T-shirt fan, so this particular book was really unsurprising to me。 I'm just surprised he doesn't seem to have mentioned having any Mickey shirts of his own (And now you know how to score a compliment from the giant of Japanese literature, just wear a tee that he would approve of!)This quaint square book is a collection of short essays by Murakami on his favourite tees that he's collected over the years。 Many are stored in cardboard boxes in his home, some will never see broad daylight because they'll attract too much attention。 The shirts have been grouped according to themes: Hawaii, beer, animals, whiskey, technology, so on and so forth。 As a fan, I enjoyed this little book, and I'm sure any Murakami fan would too! Somehow, I'm finding his opinion pieces more entertaining than his fictional stories。 He just has an interesting and unusual perspective on life。 Fans would also appreciate the little Murakami tidbits in this book (like how he spends hours rummaging at Goodwill and Tower Records, goes hunting for record stores around the world, seems to have spent a really long time in Hawaii, and that he's the same age as Bruce Springsteen)。 While reading this translated work, I found myself mentally translating the English lines into Japanese (eg。 "is that so?" into "そうですか")。 While most of the book covers American culture at large, parts of the book remain deeply entrenched in a Japanese mindset - I think studying Japanese has heightened my awareness of Japanese culture and mannerisms。 Kind of like reading an American story after spending time in the UK, these little cultural discrepancies will inevitably present themselves at unexpected moments。 。。。more
