Summary

Enjoyable book because of charming and honest Archer。 A PI story where Archer, together with Liberty, an aspiring actress, travel to Bay Town and let the action begins! Full of suspense and a bit of action where Archer shows his skills at unlocking secrets。 A pretty good story。

I like Archer but this was just too long!

Too slow。Not as good as his other books。 The smoking and dialogue is too deliberate that feel fake, like actors rehearsal in theatre。The story is about a murder, but no one died in the first half of the book。 The character is too fake to be likeable。

This was a slow read for me。 I enjoy this author so I continued where normally I would have just said next! Still am deciding if I should of passed on this one even though I did end up finishing。

The second book in Baldacci’s Archer series is just as well written as the first! NOTE: I did not read One Good Deed, the first book in the Archer series, prior to reading A Gambling Man。I got this book from the library, and I actually thought it was the second book from a different series。 So I was caught off guard when I found the book was set in the late 1940s。 It took some time for me to get used to the author’s voice in this book。 It was not what I was expecting from David Baldacci。 But after I got use to the author’s voice and phrasing, which helped to reinforce that th NOTE: I did not read One Good Deed, the first book in the Archer series, prior to reading A Gambling Man。I got this book from the library, and I actually thought it was the second book from a different series。 So I was caught off guard when I found the book was set in the late 1940s。 It took some time for me to get used to the author’s voice in this book。 It was not what I was expecting from David Baldacci。 But after I got use to the author’s voice and phrasing, which helped to reinforce that the book was set in post World War II timeframe, I started to enjoy the book more。The book starts in Reno, Nevada, as the main character, Archer, is trying to get to California and land a private investigator job。 As Archer has a stop in Nevada, he is quickly sucked into some trouble by some other key characters。 This series of events along with his desire to get to California set the stage for the rest of the book。Archer is a typical Baldacci lead male character。 Smart, sensitive, tough, and a strong moral compass。 The events in Reno and during the trip to California solidify key relationships that drive actions in Baytown, California。Although I initially chose a different book than I intended, and the setting and time period surprised me, I did enjoy this book。 I will read the first book in the series, One Good Deed。 I would recommend this book to anyone who likes Baldacci’s books, investigative mysteries, suspense, or thrillers。 。。。more

Fresh, intriguing and full of mystery。 What a fascinating read。 Archer is a gentleman, cool, charismatic and honest (mainly!) A great era, this book set in 1949 and I love the way Baldacci describes the scene, the attire and the mood。 The picture immediately comes alive in my head。 Reminds me of the old black and white gangster films I watched when I was young。 A great story and all unfolds true Sherlock Holmes style at the end。 I think Archer will harden up more as the series continues, but lov Fresh, intriguing and full of mystery。 What a fascinating read。 Archer is a gentleman, cool, charismatic and honest (mainly!) I alternated between reading and listening to this book。 The readers in the audio version had me constantly rolling my eyes。 Both versions seemed to drag on and on。 This isn’t my typical genre, but it was a book club choice。 Otherwise I would have abandoned it after about 75 pages。 I know there are tons of DB fans out there - sorry。

Very entertaining readingA lot twist and turns to the story and eventually the good guys win。 It was an interesting journey through part of California I am not really familar with。 The author's description made me interested in visiting that part of California。 Very entertaining readingA lot twist and turns to the story and eventually the good guys win。 It was an interesting journey through part of California I am not really familar with。 The author's description made me interested in visiting that part of California。 。。。more

I really loved this Archer book。 I listened to this one too。 The narrators did a marvelous job making Archer and Liberty come to life。 I like this new character better than some。 The time setting is a nice touch too。 I am giving this 5 out of 5 and want to read the next in the series。

I have always enjoyed David Baldacci novels and this one joins the club。 The story line involves Aloysius Archer, known throughout the novel as Archer, returned veteran, ex-prison mate on his journey to become a private investigator。 Set in early 1950's California, he travels to Bay City to join Willie Dash, a well known but aging PI。 Along the way he meets Liberty Callahan an extremely talented singer, dancer determined to become a star in Hollywood。 Murder soon follows and Archer is determined I have always enjoyed David Baldacci novels and this one joins the club。 The story line involves Aloysius Archer, known throughout the novel as Archer, returned veteran, ex-prison mate on his journey to become a private investigator。 Set in early 1950's California, he travels to Bay City to join Willie Dash, a well known but aging PI。 Along the way he meets Liberty Callahan an extremely talented singer, dancer determined to become a star in Hollywood。 Murder soon follows and Archer is determined to find out why Ruby Fraser, a singer at Midnight Moods has been killed。 What follows is a typical murder mystery, but with a lot of characters, each with a reason for being the suspect。 This is a fast paced novel with clearly detailed descriptions of life in the 1950's - clothing, hair, food, cars etc。 One car Archer ends up owning, is important to the plot。 At over 430 pages, this novel took me a couple of days to finish but as with most Baldacci novels there is a twist in the last 40 odd pages that I didn't see coming。 I read this, without reading reading "One Good Deed" the first Archer novel, but I'll read that sometime just to get the full Archer story。 。。。more

It wasn't all that interesting I just like Baldacci style, he brings the story to life even though its not that good。 He's just an entertaining author。 I liked the story before they got to Baytown。 But the intro as well as road trip was interesting and willy dash but that's about it。 Also back to a racist time in america that irritates me。 Bem It wasn't all that interesting I just like Baldacci style, he brings the story to life even though its not that good。 He's just an entertaining author。 I liked the story before they got to Baytown。 But the intro as well as road trip was interesting and willy dash but that's about it。 Also back to a racist time in america that irritates me。 Bem 。。。more

It's been quite awhile since I've read a David Baldacci Book。 A Gambling Man was a enjoyable read with intrigue, suspense, and romance and much of which is most entertaining to look for in a good read。The 1950s are on the horizon, and Archer is in dire need of a fresh start after a nearly fatal detour in Poca City。 So Archer hops on a bus and begins the long journey out west to California, where rumor has it there is money to be made if you’re hard-working, lucky, criminal—or all three。 It was i It's been quite awhile since I've read a David Baldacci Book。 A Gambling Man was a enjoyable read with intrigue, suspense, and romance and much of which is most entertaining to look for in a good read。The 1950s are on the horizon, and Archer is in dire need of a fresh start after a nearly fatal detour in Poca City。 So Archer hops on a bus and begins the long journey out west to California, where rumor has it there is money to be made if you’re hard-working, lucky, criminal—or all three。 It was in California, 1949。 Aloysius Archer, head protagonist is on his way to start a new job with a renowned Private Investigator in Bay Town。 Feeling lucky, he stops off at a casino in Reno, where he meets an aspiring actress and quite the entertainer in Liberty Callahan。 Together, they head west on a journey filled with danger and surprises – because Archer isn’t the only one with a secretive past。Arriving in a town rife with corruption, Archer is tasked with finding out who is doing everything they can to disrupt the appointment of a top official。 Then two seemingly unconnected people are murdered at a burlesque club。 In a tight-lipped community, Archer must dig deep to reveal the connection between the victims, As the final perilous showdown unfurls, Archer will need all of his skills to decipher the truth from the lies and finally, to prove she’s a star in the making, will Liberty have her moment in the spotlight? Archer’s first stop is a P。I。 office where he is hoping to apprentice with a legendary private eye and former FBI agent named Willie Dash。 He lands the job, and immediately finds himself in the thick of a potential scandal: a blackmail case involving a wealthy well-connected politician running for mayor that soon spins into something even more sinister。 As bodies begin falling, Archer and Dash must infiltrate the world of brothels, gambling dens, drug operations, and long-hidden secrets, descending into the rotten bones of a corrupt town that is selling itself as the promised land and become Archer’s final resting place。This was a good read that I enjoyed very much。 I don't think I've read an Archer before, but certainly enjoyed this one。 Happy New Year and Happy Reading!!! 。。。more
