Summary

The Flesh and Fire series is set in the beloved Blood and Ash world。

Born shrouded in the veil of the Primals, a Maiden as the Fates promised, Seraphena Mierel’s future has never been hers。 Chosen before birth to uphold the desperate deal her ancestor struck to save his people, Sera must leave behind her life and offer herself to the Primal of Death as his Consort。

However, Sera’s real destiny is the most closely guarded secret in all of Lasania—she’s not the well protected Maiden but an assassin with one mission—one target。 Make the Primal of Death fall in love, become his weakness, and then…end him。 If she fails, she dooms her kingdom to a slow demise at the hands of the Rot。

Sera has always known what she is。 Chosen。 Consort。 Assassin。 Weapon。 A specter never fully formed yet drenched in blood。 A monster。 Until him。 Until the Primal of Death’s unexpected words and deeds chase away the darkness gathering inside her。 And his seductive touch ignites a passion she’s never allowed herself to feel and cannot feel for him。 But Sera has never had a choice。 Either way, her life is forfeit—it always has been, as she has been forever touched by Life and Death。

I really enjoyed this book。 It is so similar to FBAA and I sort of kept picturing sera as poppy but I’m honestly not mad about it。 I really loved their chemistry and I loved the story。 An easy and fun read。

Is it just me or was this a bit samey? I had a really good time reading it but ehhhh haha。I didn't love Sera and much as I loved Poppy but I definitely preferred Nyktos to Hawke。 I enjoyed getting more world building and learning more about the history and creatures。I'm excited to see where this series goes because I think there's a lot of potential and tbh I'm a sucker for JLA's romance!

(may have slight From blood and Ash spoilers)3 stars。 Unpopular opinion here。 A Shadow in the Ember is the first book in a spin off series in the From Blood and Ash World。 It follows Sera, who has been training her whole life to be the consort of the Primal of Death in hopes this will put an end to The Rot, which is literally rotting the soil of Lasania and slowly killing its people。 I want to start with the things I didn't like to end this review in a lighter mood。 First thing I want to say is (may have slight From blood and Ash spoilers)3 stars。 Unpopular opinion here。 A Shadow in the Ember is the first book in a spin off series in the From Blood and Ash World。 It follows Sera, who has been training her whole life to be the consort of the Primal of Death in hopes this will put an end to The Rot, which is literally rotting the soil of Lasania and slowly killing its people。 I want to start with the things I didn't like to end this review in a lighter mood。 First thing I want to say is that I felt this book was unnecessarily long。 The plot moved super slow and there was absolutely no action in it。 I did like the last 100 or so pages, I was very interested and the plot was finally moving。 I understand authors need to foreshadow for the big reveal but 500 pages was a little bit too much。 Second, the characters。 They were literally Poppy and Hawke。 The similarities were too much for me。 Poppy and Sera use the exact same weapon and the kiss scenes were too similar。 There was an event that literally happened in both books exactly the same way and had me rolling my eyes。 Sera's inner struggle is very similar to Poppy's too。 Also, the whole identity reveal also had me rolling my eyes。 Like, again? Finally, the plot。 Apart from it moving super slow, I thought it was so predictable。 I saw the ending coming from miles away and I was not surprised at all。 Maybe it is that I have read too much fantasy like this or that I like darker fantasies where everything goes awfully wrong。 Also, I don't like when the author introduces a character that literally tells you the plot twist。 I like when characters slowly find out information by themselves or through something they did, not when someone else just tells them what is going on。 On the other hand, there were some things I enjoyed。 For example, I really liked Sera's openness with her sexuality。 It was really refreshing to see a female main character owning her sexuality and not being ashamed of her desire。 In addition, this gave huge me Hades and Persephone vibes, which I really enjoyed。 The Shadowlands were giving me Underworld vibes and Veses gave me Minthe vibes。 Finally, I did really like the last 100 pages, there was action and plot development。 And there was a scene in the end that directly referenced Poppy and Hawke that had me screaming。 I will continue with this series because I have high hopes that the plot will get so much better because it has lots of potential。In conclusion, if you are looking for something super similar to From Blood and Ash, I feel like this could be a 5 star read for you。 Also, if you are looking for a fantasy ROMANCE, then this is also for you。 I was let very let down by this because I was expecting something different, with an explosive plot and unique characters。 。。。more

Loved this book! It started out very slow as the characters were built up。 Half way thru it started to pick up speed and kept me on the edge of my seat。 I love how this book is connected to The Flesh and Fire series that I loved。 IMO these are the best books that she has written!I’m totally waiting for The War Of Two Queens!

These cliffhanger books are gonna drive me nuts! When is book 2 out?!But ok, this one was good, however too many elements of FBAA。 I get its a "prequel" so to speak but still could have use a bit more break off from FBAA。 These cliffhanger books are gonna drive me nuts! A Shadow in the Ember was。。。 interesting。 For the entire first half of the book I was completely lost。 I thought this was a stand-alone novel。。。 but I think I had to read something else beforehand maybe? I finally started to understand things halfway through, but really only enjoyed the last 150-200 pages。 I hate that it left off on a huge cliffhanger! If the book was more like the ending then I would have really enjoyed it。

I could not put this book down! Might have enjoyed it even more than FBAA, at least the first half。 Then for a long time I felt like the plot was going nowhere, but it really did pick up by the end。 I enjoyed the characters, the romance, though I am so so mad with Ash right now。 The end was just frustrating。 The worldbuilding was great though, but I am still super confused by how many different species of dead/undead/bad creatures there are, they all seem the same to me。 Also, sprinkl 4。5 stars, I could not put this book down! Oh my。。 this read definitely did not disappoint。 I honestly can't (and don't want to) return to normal life just yet。 It's too epic。 First of all - ASH。 He is everything I would ever want him to be。 Need I say more? An escape from reality? Can't say enough good things about this read。 Pick it up - I promise you won't regret it。Ah and if you're wondering if you need to have read the FBAA series first, the answer is no。 Though I also highly recommend all of those books (can't wait for the next one!!)。 。。。more

will write a review once i've stopped screaming into the void。for now i'll say: this book is like Blood and Ash on crack。 these characters are darker and less cuddly。 the world is older and way more complex。 the parallels between Sera/Nyktos' story and Poppy/Casteel's story are admittedly quite glaring but it was satisfying instead of boring。 every new scrap of information that impacted the original series was like gold dust to me。 i loved every word of this, even with that awful tight feeling t will write a review once i've stopped screaming into the void。for now i'll say: this book is like Blood and Ash on crack。 these characters are darker and less cuddly。 the world is older and way more complex。 the parallels between Sera/Nyktos' story and Poppy/Casteel's story are admittedly quite glaring but it was satisfying instead of boring。 every new scrap of information that impacted the original series was like gold dust to me。 i loved every word of this, even with that awful tight feeling that sat in my gut for the last like 150 pages。 the betrayals! the savagery! the cruelty! she made me feel it all! i can't pick and choose favourites when it comes to this world, these books and these characters BUT if Book 2 of this series does what A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire did for From Blood and Ash, then i know it will be JLA's best work yet。 。。。more

This book seemed a little slow at the start but as the book moved along, it was so good。 Also, all the connections and realizations I made between this book and the From Blood and Ash series were 10/10 as I knew there would be a lot, but I didn't realize how many connections there would be! What can I say… I loved this。Is it tropey, a little messy, in need of better editing and just generally imperfect in a way that is similar to the original FBAA? Yeah, totally。 And I still loved it。

This book was a reminder of why I love JLA so much。 Despite all the love Casteel was getting, he was never my favorite character for some reason。 He was okay in the first two books but in The Crown of Gilded Bones, he was so blinded by love that his character felt flat and boring。 I did not swoon for him。 Now, Nyktos on the other hand owns my whole being。 I swooned left and right for that man and he literally gave me butterflies in my stomach。 I loved how soft he was compared to Casteel。 He felt This book was a reminder of why I love JLA so much。 Despite all the love Casteel was getting, he was never my favorite character for some reason。 He was okay in the first two books but in The Crown of Gilded Bones, he was so blinded by love that his character felt flat and boring。 I did not swoon for him。 Now, Nyktos on the other hand owns my whole being。 I swooned left and right for that man and he literally gave me butterflies in my stomach。 I loved how soft he was compared to Casteel。 He felt more real to me。 Same opinion on Sera as well。 Oh God, the way I find Poppy annoying is not even funny, but Sera was surprisingly not that bad。 I didn't feel the urge to punch her in the throat and was actually rooting for her。 Which is good。 I loved the pacing of this book, another thing TCOGB was lacking severely。 I was dreading going through that book because the pacing was godawful。 But this book was fast-paced in every moment and I loved it。 The storyline was engaging and the book didn't feel dragging。 This book is a chunk but it didn't feel like it was that much。I'm so excited for the next book in this series even more so than the original one haha。 Loved it。 10/10。 。。。more

Dare I say I liked this book better than From Blood and Ash?! It probably had something to do with the draken (dragons)。 I didn't mind that this follows a bit of a JLA pattern, in terms of plot/characterization, mostly because it soothes my anxiety to get a brand new story with a sense of already knowing what's going on。 While that may not be for everyone, I cannot wait to continue this series。 Dare I say I liked this book better than From Blood and Ash?!
