THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARD WINNER and ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT NOVELS OF OUR TIME FOR YOUNG READERS

Caitlin has Asperger's。 The world according to her is black and white; anything in between is confusing。 Before, when things got confusing, Caitlin went to her older brother, Devon, for help。 But Devon was killed in a school shooting, and Caitlin's dad is so distraught that he is just not helpful。 Caitlin wants everything to go back to the way things were, but she doesn't know how to do that。 Then she comes across the word closure--and she realizes this is what she needs。 And in her search for it, Caitlin discovers that the world may not be so black and white after all。

"Powerful。"--Publishers Weekly

"A strong and complex character study。"--The Horn Book

"Allusions to Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, the portrayal of a whole community's healing process, and the sharp insights into Caitlyn's behavior enhance this fine addition to the recent group of books with narrators with autism and Asbergers。"--Booklist

LOVED this young girl’s internal dialogue! LOOK AT THE PERSON。 Easy read appropriate for 5-7th grade。 Thank you, Dawn Marie for the rec。

I wasn't diagnosed as a child, but the moment I opened this book when I was in fourth grade, I was hooked for life。 I was immediately fascinated by its writing style, one that's also done in Perks of Being a Wallflower。 The dialogue flows so much better without the extra grammatical pieces such as quotation marks or "he replied, she said, etc"。 It also shows a believeable and relatable portrayal of an autistic girl, instead of trying to put stereotypically male autism traits onto a female charac I wasn't diagnosed as a child, but the moment I opened this book when I was in fourth grade, I was hooked for life。 I was immediately fascinated by its writing style, one that's also done in Perks of Being a Wallflower。 The dialogue flows so much better without the extra grammatical pieces such as quotation marks or "he replied, she said, etc"。 It also shows a believeable and relatable portrayal of an autistic girl, instead of trying to put stereotypically male autism traits onto a female character。It made sense, and it felt more real to me, even if I had some more social awareness than Scout (I want to use her nickname)。 The way she talked to people was more like how I talked to people, or at least how I wanted to if I wouldn't have gotten in trouble。 The school shooting background didn't really hit me as part of the plot until I got a little older, and I think that's when I understood the book from more of an outside perspective。 I can think of multiple people who did that heroic deed that Devon did, at his age, and that's horrible to think about。The community, however, really does bring everything together in this novel。 I've read this countless times using the same book I got at 10 years old, and I even brought it to college with me。 It really helped me through some rough times; I looked for answers in it sometimes, much like Scout did with dictionaries。 。。。more

I have finished this book with tearful eyes。 I have never imagined the power of the themes portrayed in this novel。 All of them tell you how hard and worthy is to deal with life。I highly recommend this book。Thanks to the author for this lovely and outstanding novel ❤

The protagonist, Caitlin, with her quirks and idiosyncrasies, makes for an interesting and sometimes humorous narrative。 The context of the story, involving a school shooting, provides a unique twist。 While I did enjoy the story and found its exploration of loss, grief, and closure to be both poignant and enjoyable, I found the story to lack some authenticity。 I don't have Autism, but as a special education teacher, I do have experience teaching students who do。 There is a saying in the Autism c The protagonist, Caitlin, with her quirks and idiosyncrasies, makes for an interesting and sometimes humorous narrative。 The context of the story, involving a school shooting, provides a unique twist。 While I did enjoy the story and found its exploration of loss, grief, and closure to be both poignant and enjoyable, I found the story to lack some authenticity。 I don't have Autism, but as a special education teacher, I do have experience teaching students who do。 There is a saying in the Autism community (and I'm paraphrasing) that if you have met one person with Autism, you have met one person with Autism。 Meaning that no two individuals are the same。 However, when reading literature with characters who have Autism, they often fall into a certain cliché, and Caitlin fell into this category for me。 She didn't feel entirely authentic to me and the narrative suffered because of it。 。。。more

Beautifully written。 Deeply sad, but thought provoking and hopeful in surprising ways。 Written for young readers, but I think readers of every age would walk away from it with something meaningful and important。

I came across this book by accident in my basement the other night, and after reading the synopsis, I knew I wanted to give it a try! this book is told from a young girl with Aspergers’ perspective as she deals with the lose of her brother。 this book is difficult at times as Caitlin doesn’t understand how she is feeling about losing her brother, and she has a hard time understanding other’s emotions。 I’m very glad I stumbled upon it as it was so incredibly good! This was a powerful book。 The author offers a keen insight into the mind of a child with Asperger’s。 She is struggling with the death of her older brother and at the same time trying to act like an ordinary 5th grader。 It isn’t until several chapters in that the reader finds out how he died。 The author seemed to make deliberate choices when it came to when information about characters is introduced。 It made for a very intriguing story with a lot of social impact。 Would recommend for intermediate This was a powerful book。 The author offers a keen insight into the mind of a child with Asperger’s。 She is struggling with the death of her older brother and at the same time trying to act like an ordinary 5th grader。 It isn’t until several chapters in that the reader finds out how he died。 The author seemed to make deliberate choices when it came to when information about characters is introduced。 It made for a very intriguing story with a lot of social impact。 Would recommend for intermediate readers。 Grades 4 and up。 。。。more

This book was completely different from what I generally read, which to be fair, I didn't realize until I was a few pages in, and by then it was too late to stop。 One thing I loved about it was that it was written from a different perspective - from the perspective of a girl with Aspergers。 Before reading the book, I had limited knowledge on how people on the autism spectrum saw situations, so this really was a great insight, but I do think the author could have better communicated what the read This book was completely different from what I generally read, which to be fair, I didn't realize until I was a few pages in, and by then it was too late to stop。 One thing I loved about it was that it was written from a different perspective - from the perspective of a girl with Aspergers。 Before reading the book, I had limited knowledge on how people on the autism spectrum saw situations, so this really was a great insight, but I do think the author could have better communicated what the readers were facing at the start because I think I was lost in the beginning for a while。 Another thing you don't see a lot - narrative from a child's point of view。 Again, it wasn't communicated too well in the beginning (I should really read the back of the book better, huh) but it was such a change to read the world from such a child-like point of view。 However, that's also the reason I knocked a star off - because I'm not entirely sure whether I liked covering such a difficult topic while trying to see it from a child's "writing" - made the entire thing seem sort of kiddish? When it's not? I can't really put it into words。 But it was a nice change to try and understand how children understand traumatic experiences。 Almost teared up while reading it (at many points, might I add)。 Overall, a great read, and I'm glad that this was the first book I've picked up and completed in a while。 Onwards and upwards。 。。。more

Second audio book today。 First one, Rules, was told by the point of view of a preteen with a sibling with autism。 This one told by the preteen with Asperger’s I liked Rules just a bit better but this one was really good too。

A great book that shows how people with autism can overcome their difficult and see the world differently。 At the same time, it helps everyone else to have a deeper look into this part of the society。

I loved this。 The autistic Girl's character and traits resonated deeply with me, as mother of an autistic teen。 So carefully and skillfully written。 Also a brilliant look at grief and grieving from childrens' perspectives。 I shed tears and felt a better person for having read this book。 I loved this。 The autistic Girl's character and traits resonated deeply with me, as mother of an autistic teen。 So carefully and skillfully written。 Also a brilliant look at grief and grieving from childrens' perspectives。 I shed tears and felt a better person for having read this book。 。。。more

This book opened my eyes to things that I had never paid much attention to。 It was nice to read a book where the main character had a disability because there is not enough characters with disabilities in books。

I didn't realize that this book was geared exactly for children。 I sometimes will read children's fiction but this particular book was too young for me。 I had already abandoned two books and since this was short, I decided to stick with it。 Plus it helps me to get closer to my goal! This is one I will listen to again。 I felt so comforted by this book as it vividly recaptured my own childhood。 No, I did not have any “diagnosis label”; only viewed as a very quiet and sensitive child who avoided social interaction。 I was terrified to “say” my thoughts as I knew I would be misunderstood。 I was different from others my age, and over time simply came to accept that something was terribly wrong with me。 I loved to read and excelled academically so I devoted myself to study。 Being This is one I will listen to again。 I felt so comforted by this book as it vividly recaptured my own childhood。 No, I did not have any “diagnosis label”; only viewed as a very quiet and sensitive child who avoided social interaction。 I was terrified to “say” my thoughts as I knew I would be misunderstood。 I was different from others my age, and over time simply came to accept that something was terribly wrong with me。 I loved to read and excelled academically so I devoted myself to study。 Being a social misfit was not a pleasant experience but coped as best I could and survived the loneliness and despair。 Now as a senior citizen I actually like myself just fine and am happy。 。。。more

I had tears in my eyes through practically this entire book。 In my opinion, every parent and teacher would benefit from reading this book and it should be required reading for middle school。 It’s such a realistic look into the mind of an individual on the spectrum。
