Building on the events and characters from the first (albeit fairly complete) book in the trilogy, we are rewarded with a much better balance between character and world building, action, and story。 The first half of the book (or more) seems like a build up to the latter events, but never feels slow。 The events of the latter part, while mostly action driven, never felt too fast, still having enough time to attend to the characters。And then, there's that ending!! Ahhh。 Work kept me from reading this for a good week when I first started it, but I finally got the chance to pick it up over the long weekend and DEVOURED it! I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about the tournament since I'm not a fan of reading action scenes, but I should know by now that I shouldn't doubt V。E。 and me inevitably enjoying their writing。(view spoiler)[Rhy/Alucard (hide spoiler)] is probably my ultimate OTP since, even individually, they're my two favorite characters in the se Ahhh。 Work kept me from reading this for a good week when I first started it, but I finally got the chance to pick it up over the long weekend and DEVOURED it! I’ve been reading this series as a buddy read with Alex which has been so much fun so far。 Once again, I partly listened to this one on audio and the audiobook for this one was so much better than the first book。 Instead of just having one narrator like in A Darker Shade of Magic, we have a male and a female narrator in this one and it really helped the story。 I found it a lot easier to focus on the audiobook with multiple narrators and I wasn’t distracted by the voices。We start the book on Lila I’ve been reading this series as a buddy read with Alex which has been so much fun so far。 Once again, I partly listened to this one on audio and the audiobook for this one was so much better than the first book。 Instead of just having one narrator like in A Darker Shade of Magic, we have a male and a female narrator in this one and it really helped the story。 I found it a lot easier to focus on the audiobook with multiple narrators and I wasn’t distracted by the voices。We start the book on Lila’s point of view which I loved。 Even though this book is in third person, there’s definitely a distinct separation between the characters that are being focused on and the narrator does change in the audiobook depending on it。 I definitely have found myself enjoying Lila’s points of view more。Kell would say it was impossible。 Something I found myself absolutely loving about this book and the series in general is the fact this book has a very separate plot line from the first book。 I often find second books in series can fall into being a bridge book between the first and third book, or just continue on and drag out the plot from the first。 Without spoiling this book as it is the second in the series, this book follows a game called the Element Games or the Essen Tasch, which was so much fun to read about。I found this one very fast paced again, which I’m glad about because the third and final book in this series is thick and I’m glad I’m not too daunted about going into it。 I really like the characters but as with the first book, I did want a little more tension between them and a little more interaction to keep me interested in their relationship。What a useless word, in a world with magic。Overall, this was such a good second book in a series and there’s so much to enjoy。 I’m very excited to finish off this series and see where A Conjuring of Light goes!★★★★4 out of 5 stars-BethMay your shelves forever overflow with books! ☽ 。。。more

So this book was waaay more character development driven than plot driven, so after finishing it part of me is left thinking "not much happened" BUT I still loved reading it and the pages melted away as I read so 5/5 stars。 So this book was waaay more character development driven than plot driven, so after finishing it part of me is left thinking "not much happened" BUT I still loved reading it and the pages melted away as I read so 5/5 stars。 。。。more

I feel like the majority of this book was just filler and pretty unnecessary but I really enjoyed the games and the ending was worth it

I thoroughly enjoyed this second book of the Shades of Magic series。 It’s rare to find fantasy specifically written for adults that isn’t full of gratuitous violence and sex。 A Gathering of Shadows challenges many things, including heteornomativity and religious bias。 One could argue it challenges Christianity, specifically, though it does so not out of malice or a need to disprove, but simply demonstrates the presumptuousness and absurdity of believing without a doubt that one religion is right I thoroughly enjoyed this second book of the Shades of Magic series。 It’s rare to find fantasy specifically written for adults that isn’t full of gratuitous violence and sex。 A Gathering of Shadows challenges many things, including heteornomativity and religious bias。 One could argue it challenges Christianity, specifically, though it does so not out of malice or a need to disprove, but simply demonstrates the presumptuousness and absurdity of believing without a doubt that one religion is right and all others therefore wrong。 So I guess if you’re hardcore religious, this isn’t the book for you…or perhaps it truly is…I enjoyed the first book of the series, but I’ll admit I was desperate to know how this one ended, and now even more desperate to get my hands on the final book in the series。 。。。more

Good, fun。 Definitely a "second book" in the trilogy, but keeps it all moving adequately。Audiobook: New narrators! They're better than the previous old guy! It's unfortunate that they're not mixed quite the same and I kept having to fiddle with volume chapter-to-chapter, but overall I think they're both quite good。 Good, fun。 Definitely a "second book" in the trilogy, but keeps it all moving adequately。Audiobook: New narrators! Rating: 4。5/5I've seen this series classed under 'escapism' and I totally get it。 The world V。E。 Schwab has created is fascinating and unique, while still using aspects from our real world。 Unfortunately, this book does not take advantage of this wonderfully created world, since most of it is set in Red London。 While this story seemed more of a filler, it did, however, produce some new characters and interesting character developments for the previous characters。 The cliffhanger at the end left Rating: 4。5/5I've seen this series classed under 'escapism' and I totally get it。 The world V。E。 Schwab has created is fascinating and unique, while still using aspects from our real world。 Unfortunately, this book does not take advantage of this wonderfully created world, since most of it is set in Red London。 While this story seemed more of a filler, it did, however, produce some new characters and interesting character developments for the previous characters。 The cliffhanger at the end left me wanting so much, so I can't wait to read the next book。 。。。more

4。5 starsIt is bloody brilliant。 At first, it felt like a bridge book between the first and the finale of the series with introduction to new characters and the villain。 But then, the games have started and all the slow pace and introductory feeling of the first part had vanished。 It was tense at times, funny at times and definitely made my heart race and forget that reality existed。 The charters are a chief's kiss, starting from the tow main ones and their alter egos going to the secondary ones 4。5 starsIt is bloody brilliant。 At first, it felt like a bridge book between the first and the finale of the series with introduction to new characters and the villain。 But then, the games have started and all the slow pace and introductory feeling of the first part had vanished。 It was tense at times, funny at times and definitely made my heart race and forget that reality existed。 The charters are a chief's kiss, starting from the tow main ones and their alter egos going to the secondary ones and the villain, they are all well built, layered and all pursing something。 。。。more
