Summary

In this gripping sequel to Star Wars: The Rising Storm, the light of the Jedi faces its darkest hour。

Time and again, the vicious raiders known as the Nihil have sought to bring the golden age of the High Republic to a fiery end。 Time and again, the High Republic has emerged battered and weary, but victorious thank to its Jedi protectors-and there is no monument to their cause grander than the Starlight Beacon。

Hanging like a jewel in the Outer Rim, the Beacon embodies the High Republic at the apex of its aspirations: a hub of culture and knowledge, a bright torch against the darkness of the unknown, and an extended hand of welcome to the furthest reaches of the galaxy。 As survivors and refugees flee the Nihil's attacks, the Beacon and its crew stand ready to shelter and heal。

The grateful Knights and Padawans of the Jedi Order stationed there finally have a chance to recover-from the pain of their injuries and the grief of their losses。 But the storm they thought had passed still rages; they are simply caught in its eye。 Marchion Ro, the true mastermind of the Nihil, is preparing his most daring attack yet-one designed to snuff out the light of the Jedi。

Loved the pace and momentum of this book。 It definitely kept me on the edge of my seat。This was the Star Wars book equivalent of what it was like seeing Avengers: Infinity War in theaters the first time。 (Of course that does mean that you at the very least need to read the first two High Republic adult novels to understand what is happening here)。

I can't believe it。 I actually liked it, despite all the ill-will I held against this book at the beginning (i。e。 the total incompetence of the Jedi, nonexistent security on Starlight Beacon despite the Nihil attacking everywhere)。 I ended up really enjoying this book at the end。If you have been following the High Republic era thus far, you will enjoy this one。The characters really shine in this one and they finally get the development they so desperately needed。 Elzar Mann, Stellan Gios and Bel I can't believe it。 I actually liked it, despite all the ill-will I held against this book at the beginning (i。e。 the total incompetence of the Jedi, nonexistent security on Starlight Beacon despite the Nihil attacking everywhere)。 I ended up really enjoying this book at the end。If you have been following the High Republic era thus far, you will enjoy this one。The characters really shine in this one and they finally get the development they so desperately needed。 Elzar Mann, Stellan Gios and Bell along with the crew of the Vessel finally become three-dimensional characters。 It took three books, but hey, we're here at last!I won't speak too much about the plot or certain events because this is a Star Wars novel that's hard to discuss without including spoilers。 So all I can say is I enjoyed seeing the Jedi be JEDI for once and not some sort of superheroes。 I also liked how this Star Wars book doesn't go down the usual route of characters having plot armor, that is certainly not the case in this one。 Yeah, big emphasis on that last point。Audible book is highly recommended。 Marc Thompson does an excellent job as usual, and the production value is top-notch!Enjoy the ride! 。。。more

An incredibly disappointing installment in this new series。 The adult High Republic novels should stand on their own as a continuous narrative, just like all the other new canon Star Wars series do, yet this book is instead littered with important references to external sources (comics, YA novels, etc。) that frankly make the story difficult to follow unless you’ve caught up on all the other material。 This approach reeks of Disney-imposed corporate synergy that may be good for sales but fatally d An incredibly disappointing installment in this new series。 The adult High Republic novels should stand on their own as a continuous narrative, just like all the other new canon Star Wars series do, yet this book is instead littered with important references to external sources (comics, YA novels, etc。) that frankly make the story difficult to follow unless you’ve caught up on all the other material。 This approach reeks of Disney-imposed corporate synergy that may be good for sales but fatally disrupts the storytelling。 I don’t blame the author- she made the book as entertaining as could be given the circumstances。 But it’s sad to see how far short this new publishing venture is falling from what could have been。 。。。more

See more of my reviews and other bookish content here! This book was a bit of a let down。 The writing, plot, pacing, and characterizations were all sub par in comparison to previous entries of the High Republic。 The writing felt choppy and lacked the level of description I've come to expect from the adult Star Wars books。 The little description available was often done via content provided in parentheses (like this), which got annoying really quickly and was often unnecessary。 The pace went from See more of my reviews and other bookish content here! This book was a bit of a let down。 The writing, plot, pacing, and characterizations were all sub par in comparison to previous entries of the High Republic。 The writing felt choppy and lacked the level of description I've come to expect from the adult Star Wars books。 The little description available was often done via content provided in parentheses (like this), which got annoying really quickly and was often unnecessary。 The pace went from slow to frantic and then never really let up until the end。 I'm sure that was probably intentional to convey the stress and panic of the situation on the space station, but it also made everything feel a bit jumpy and kept important points of the story from eliciting their full impact because the characters were constantly off to the next problem。The plot felt incredibly small in scope and had some plot holes large enough to fly a space cruiser through them。 Light of the Jedi and The Rising Storm both felt like they were connected to the larger Star Wars galaxy in meaningful ways。 This story did not。 It felt largely isolated, which was a disappointment after The Rising Storm introduced some interesting politics that I was hoping to get more of here。 I'm sure the feeling of isolation was probably purposeful since one of the major things the plot hinges on is the Starlight Beacon being cut off from everyone else。 It just made the story feel small even though it attempted to claim to be a disaster of galaxy-wide proportions。 This book didn't really give anything in the way of answers to the series' mysteries either, which was somewhat frustrating since this was promoted as an epic finale of the first wave of stories。 I was expecting at least something to be resolved, but I didn't get that sense at all here。The characters, with the exception of Bell, felt super flat to me。 This was a very plot-driven story, and the characters definitely suffered because of it。 There was such promise at the beginning。 I loved the brief exploration of Bell's grief and guilt and Elzar's struggle with the dark side in the first few chapters。 Then the plot on the station started, and the characters just became avatars for whatever the story needed them to be。 There was the potential for this to be a moving story about coping with fear and grief, but that potential was completely squandered。 The one bright spot was the connection between Bell and Burryaga。 Their friendship felt organic and heartfelt, and I enjoyed seeing it grow。 There were also many moments that had a huge emotional impact, but that impact was largely due to the character-building work of previous books rather than this one。Overall, I was frustrated by this book。 I had such high expectations and was let down immensely。 In my opinion, this is the worst of Claudia Gray's Star Wars books。 I still love the characters, though。 So, I can't rate this book too badly even if the story left a lot to be desired。 Therefore, I rate this book 3 out of 5 stars。 。。。more

This review will be very short, because if I start writing about the book, I'll be inclined to spoil things, and that goes against my policy。 I'll let my rating speak for itself, and merely add that the one thing which sets this series apart from so many other Star Wars novels is that no one is safe。 There is no plot armor。 Initially, I wanted the authors to give us a key group of characters to really sink our teeth into—a Luke, Han and Leia, if you will—but now, I understand why they didn't。 I This review will be very short, because if I start writing about the book, I'll be inclined to spoil things, and that goes against my policy。 I'll let my rating speak for itself, and merely add that the one thing which sets this series apart from so many other Star Wars novels is that no one is safe。 There is no plot armor。 Initially, I wanted the authors to give us a key group of characters to really sink our teeth into—a Luke, Han and Leia, if you will—but now, I understand why they didn't。 I have my own key characters in whom I've invested, and if you're enjoying the series, I'm sure you have yours, and they may be different from mine, but no less important。 And none of these characters have plot armor! I found this book not inadequate, but only half-cocked。 A bit like a first advanced draft before the lector kicks in and removes all those errors, and the story concentrates and refocuses。 So many things happen, but what wants this book tell us beyond all the action? It feels a bit like a novel for a movie。 It might have worked better as a movie, but it is not using all the possibilities a book can offer。 That is similar to what we have seen in the three THR adult novels。

"Nah, we got bigger things to worry about。" (WHAT ON EARTH IS BIGGER THAN LEARNING HOW THE FORCE CAN BE BLOCKED?; I really hope those creatures aren't just updated newer versions of yslamari)。 Or even, "This thing is killing Jedi。 It has always killed them when they are alone。 So let's be sure to investigate one by one, ok?"Geode was funny, and the twist with Mann killing the only person who could save them from crashing was horrifying。 However, it bothered me that half of the crash was so abrupt; there was little to nothing about who was on board and why we should care。My only other complaint is the ending with Marchion Ro; he was not in it enough, chilling in a Captain's chair surrounded by enforcer droids。 Heck, even when he arrived to watch Starlight Beacon burn, I felt that his wave of triumph was uncalled for; he burned the station, but the Jedi were still heroes for saving half the people, a win that was similar to the Hetzal Prime disaster。And, the fact that Bell didn't find Burryaga bothers me; if he was alive, it would be good to resolve that in this book, not a future one。Overall, I gave this three stars, a 5/10。 It was good, but it was not a completely fit companion considering the emotions and feelings that came from the previous two books。 。。。more

I didn’t even need to know what the stories revolved around to be excited。 And here we are at the end of phase one, with a cast of characters, many of whom I care about as much as those from movies or tv。 The continuity and character development from Soule, Scott, and Gray, (as well as the other storytellers involved outside of the adult novels) has made these books such a rewarding experience。 With the news that phase 2 of the high republic initiative will precede these stories, the pressure was on to deliver a memorable story to punctuate phase one, while we presumably take a small break from these characters。 Boy was this a treat!! Gray once again solidifies herself as an all time great Star Wars storyteller。 Amazing character development, wonderful horror elements, and terrific pacing drive this nail biting novel。 I could not be more satisfied and heartbroken by what I’ve just read。 I will say there were a couple times I had trouble comprehending how they were moving about Starlight Beacon, however I am an idiot with zero reading comprehension。 (I am the type of reader who tries to thoroughly comprehend each sentence no matter how inconsequential。 A blueprint of Starlight Beacon would help me a ton! :/) Thank you to all the high republic authors for phase one。 What an unforgettable journey! Phase one of the High Republic concludes with a combination ‘70’s disaster/horror movie。 Think the Poseidon Adventure meets Aliens。Like the previous book, The Rising Storm, the story has real consequences and the stakes are high。 I had sit down and read the last 1/3 of this book in one shot because I had to know what would happen to the protagonists。 While I feel that some characters needed more time for readers to really connect with them, I wanted to see what their fates were。 Phase one of the Phase one of the High Republic concludes with a combination ‘70’s disaster/horror movie。 Think the Poseidon Adventure meets Aliens。Like the previous book, The Rising Storm, the story has real consequences and the stakes are high。 I had sit down and read the last 1/3 of this book in one shot because I had to know what would happen to the protagonists。 While I feel that some characters needed more time for readers to really connect with them, I wanted to see what their fates were。 Phase one of the High Republic was called ‘Light of the Jedi,’ but I am not sure why。 It seems with each successive book the Jedi’s light dims more and more。 Was I completely satisfied with Phase One? This one will rip your heart out。 It was exceptionally heart wrenching! But of course what else should I have expected from Claudia Gray?I guess in some ways this felt like a smaller story than the first two books because it takes place almost entirely on Starlight Beacon, and only covers like a couple of days。 Emotionally though it was the most impactful for me。 Which isn't really fair since it builds off all the work done by all the works of The High Republic to date, but fairness has no place This one will rip your heart out。 It was exceptionally heart wrenching! (hide spoiler)] Although really this is only a spoiler if you haven't read the title of the book, seen the cover art on the book, looked at the awesome poster included in the hardback edition of the book (which at this time is the only available physical edition), or read the giant quote on the back stating in all caps: (view spoiler)["We will watch Starlight Beacon burn。" (hide spoiler)] If you somehow managed to avoid all of that then spoilers。 (view spoiler)[So Starlight Beacon burns。 You might think this was kind of anticlimactic, but it wasn't。 You are watching this event unfold as our Jedi walk around completely unaware。 Then they learn what is happening, but still think they can save the station and the people on it。 It really hits home when they start to realize they are powerless to stop it。 (hide spoiler)] That said (view spoiler)[Starlight Beacon is just a space station。 It sucks that we lose it because it was really cool, and it had become home to so many of our characters, but if that had been all that we lost I'd have been fine with it。 Stations can be rebuilt。 The people on them cannot。 (hide spoiler)] And it is these people that make this story。So let's start with Bell since he's my favorite Padawan by far。 (view spoiler)[He's still grappling with the death of Master Loden only to almost loose his current Master the exact same way!? He and Burry form a close friendship, and then Burry is, maybe, dead?! I mean after the fakeout death with Leox I assume since we got no body Burry is alive still。 There's nothing saying that Bell, and we the readers, won't get our hearts blown to bits if we find him only to watch him dies in a future book。 I loved Bell's newly regained confidence in the face of this crisis though! (hide spoiler)]Then we have Stellan。 (view spoiler)[So here's the thing。 Jedi are dropping like flies in this book。 At first they are Jedi I don't really know, or that I'm not super attached to。 I mean I liked Nib well enough, and I liked Orla quite a bit, but they're kind of side characters。 I'm okay with losing them if a Jedi had to go。 Stellan was one of the big three though! He's the embodiment of what the Jedi strive to be。 He's not perfect, but he is noble, honorable, and just a good person。 I didn't believe he was in danger until Elzar tells him to go without him, and that he'd be right behind him。 Then I knew it was all over, but the crying。 He will be missed! (hide spoiler)]Elzar (view spoiler)[ Is going through his own stuff from the last book。 He's distanced himself from the Force a bit after having used the dark side。 He's trying to work through his emotions, and his feelings for Avar。 And he's making great progress it seems。 He is able to step up and be the guy when he is needed most。 Only to then take a large step back at the end by killing someone in cold blood while angry。 To say nothing of the fact that the person he killed was in the act of saving what was left of the Starlight Beacon。 His journey is far from over。 I'm not sure his reunion with Avar will help either。 And yet I'm still rooting for their relationship。 I'm a sucker for love。 (hide spoiler)]Marchion Ro。 (view spoiler)[ Star Wars has hit it out of the park with this villain。 He is mysterious, intelligent, dangerous, and frightening。 What is his plan to destroy the Jedi? He says it won't be long from now。 What are these living weapons that are picking off the Jedi? We never get to see them! Maybe the worst part is that these questions are left unanswered。 It's a cliffhanger that won't be answered for years as this was the end of phase 1, but we've been told phase 2 takes place quite a long time ago in the past。 So we don't get to have answers until phase 3!! (hide spoiler)]There were a couple of annoying things。 The first isn't huge, but are there no Republic security forces of any kind on this Republic space station? (view spoiler)[I know the Jedi were always meant to be a presence on Starlight Beacon, but really no other security of any kind!? There should have been。 There are holding cells so there should be guards! Then when it became apparent that something was neutralizing and picking off Jedi these security should have been paired with Jedi at all times。 (hide spoiler)]Also Geode。 (view spoiler)[I still don't love this rock character。 It has become clear he is supposed to be a real character, but every time I read about this rock I feel like he's a joke being played on me the reader。 I don't see him growing on me in the future。 (hide spoiler)]My thoughts overall are that I loved this book!
