Puffins are also apparently the only birds that molt their beaks (they have a summer beak and a winter beak)。 Fossilized trees are basically living spectroscopes and they are sometimes called rainbow wood because you can tell what type of minerals formed in them based on the color。 Oh, and ginkgo is so old that it predates plants that flowered or bore fruit。This would make a great gift for a precocious kid who's into life sciences, but it would also make a gorgeous coffee table book for a nerd who loves art (because the illustrations in this book are, again, gorgeous)。 It's on par with some of those Eyewitness books, but more artsy, just to give you an idea of how this book is constructed。 I also like that it doesn't balk at defining the scientific terms for kids。Thanks to the publisher for sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review!5 stars 。。。more

Received this new book by Ben Hoare yesterday and am deeply impressed。 It is a substantial book at 191 pages, and really beautiful to look at and to hold。 The gold page edging gives a sparkle and importance that kids will love。 Written clearly, the text doesn't talk down to the kids who are its target audience。 Instead, the material is straightforward, with each object having a main section enhanced by smaller photos and illustrations giving more information。 Open this book anywhere and you'll l Received this new book by Ben Hoare yesterday and am deeply impressed。 It is a substantial book at 191 pages, and really beautiful to look at and to hold。 The gold page edging gives a sparkle and importance that kids will love。 Written clearly, the text doesn't talk down to the kids who are its target audience。 Instead, the material is straightforward, with each object having a main section enhanced by smaller photos and illustrations giving more information。 Open this book anywhere and you'll learn the basic facts about an object enhanced by interesting subtexts。 For example, who knew that sea shells are made from the same material as natural chalk? All of this information could have come across as dry or pedantic, but not at all。 As soon as you open the pages you'll see that the organization of the material and bright pictures and illustrations tempt you to explore。 This would be a favorite book for children curious about the natural world and would certainly spark the interest of any budding naturalist。The book design is a delight, from the orange end papers to the brilliant photos and page layout。 Illustrator Kaley McKean has provided appealing images to complement the text and provide an organic flow that keeps you reading, whatever your age。 I was intrigued enough to look up her website, where I realized I was familiar with her unique style from Aquila children's magazine, where her distinct and amazing images are often featured。This is a book that children will love and parents will find themselves reading for their own pleasure。 I know I will enjoy sharing it with the children in my life。 。。。more

Also, they’ve been around for 540 million years 😙Rafflesia has a spot in this book! It “stinks like a dead animal and releases runny, snot-like pollen。” (The tiny flies like that 🙉)A beautiful spread per topic。 I could go on all day。 SIGH。 I’ve done a flip-through of the book, just tap on my #igreels ❤️ @hweezbooks📚: times。reads (Times Distribution) 。。。more

A guide to the wonders of the natural world。Wow。 What a book。 Nature’s Treasures is absolutely amazing。Firstly I must comment on the physical production of Nature’s Treasures。 As one would expect from a DK book, it is top quality with a beautifully foiled cover that is so solid and robust the book will endure years of handling and reading。 Add in the gold edges and Nature’s Treasures feels completely sumptuous。 The orange endpapers are beautifully designed and the illustrations by Kaley McKean a A guide to the wonders of the natural world。Wow。 What a book。 Nature’s Treasures is absolutely amazing。Firstly I must comment on the physical production of Nature’s Treasures。 As one would expect from a DK book, it is top quality with a beautifully foiled cover that is so solid and robust the book will endure years of handling and reading。 Add in the gold edges and Nature’s Treasures feels completely sumptuous。 The orange endpapers are beautifully designed and the illustrations by Kaley McKean are glorious。 As well as those illustrations, there are also stunning photographs throughout to exemplify the text。 In addition, not only does the white space enhance the images, but it means that the writing is totally accessible to independent young readers, being brief whilst containing incredible information so that even the most reluctant young reader can access the text。Nature’s Treasures is divided into sections covering animals, plants, fungi and algae, minerals and rocks, and items made by nature, with sensible advice for young nature spotters at the beginning and a useful glossary and index covering everything from aardvark to zinc at the back。 Every section is packed with information。 Indeed, whilst Nature’s Treasures would make a brilliant gift for individual children, it would also enhance any KS2 classroom because there are so many other references within its pages such as the etymology of fulgurite so that young minds can be inspired to learn more beyond the pages of the book。There’s so much to discover within the pages of this book that I cannot praise Nature’s Treasures highly enough。 It is fantastic and would make a wonderful gift。 Buy it! 。。。more
