A condescension to young women。Grow up to be Joan Birman if you want, girls。 She began her mathematical career AFTER raising 3 kids, then lit the world on fire with beauty。https://www。math。columbia。edu/~jb/my-。。。By the way, here is the paper McKellar famously coauthored。 http://danicamckellar。com/pdf/percola。。。 Knowledgeable opinion obviously ranks this far below Mirzkani, Birman, Starkston, and so on。 (list of women mathematicians https://qr。ae/TUn1yh) A condescension to young women。Grow up to be Joan Birman if you want, girls。 She began her mathematical career AFTER raising 3 kids, then lit the world on fire with beauty。https://www。math。columbia。edu/~jb/my-。。。By the way, here is the paper McKellar famously coauthored。 http://danicamckellar。com/pdf/percola。。。 Knowledgeable opinion obviously ranks this far below Mirzkani, Birman, Starkston, and so on。 (list of women mathematicians https://qr。ae/TUn1yh) 。。。more

I am impressed with this math book, I just wished that I would have had something fun like this when I was in school。 Although geared towards girls, I am sure boys will be able to learn from her examples and the way that she presents the material inside this book。 I haven’t read everything inside the book yet because the book is packed with lots of information and I want to purchase my own copy and add post-its as I go through it, with things I want to refer back to。Inside the book, you will fin I am impressed with this math book, I just wished that I would have had something fun like this when I was in school。 Although geared towards girls, I am sure boys will be able to learn from her examples and the way that she presents the material inside this book。 I haven’t read everything inside the book yet because the book is packed with lots of information and I want to purchase my own copy and add post-its as I go through it, with things I want to refer back to。Inside the book, you will find examples, diagrams, tips and Danica’s own twists on math。 She just doesn’t touch on the subjects but she gives lots of examples and she elaborates on these examples。 I especially like the language that Danica’s uses in the book, it is plain and simple, yet not slow and lengthy。 She explains the math in an easy-to-understand language。 As a substitute teacher, I can’t wait to get a copy of this book and get some tips that will help the students in the classroom。 Any help that I can find for them will be beneficial。 Thanks Danica for giving students the tools to make them successful。 Hopefully, this will encourage them and make this subject less of a struggle for them。 。。。more

This is a great review of Algebra aimed at teen girls。 There are plenty of helpful hints, encouragements and support for those who might feel like they are not supposed to be good at math simply because they are girls。 I would definitely recommend McKellar's books to young ladies who want a bit of extra help with algebra。 This is a great review of Algebra aimed at teen girls。 There are plenty of helpful hints, encouragements and support for those who might feel like they are not supposed to be good at math simply because they are girls。 I would definitely recommend McKellar's books to young ladies who want a bit of extra help with algebra。 。。。more

I loved this book because it has helped me through math and find many ways that are unique and relate to a teenage girl's life。 These situations that she ties into math problems has helped me solve them faster using many tips and tricks。 For example, she would use situations such as pickin like outfits and tying that in with greatest common multiple。 I loved this book because it has helped me through math and find many ways that are unique and relate to a teenage girl's life。 These situations that she ties into math problems has helped me solve them faster using many tips and tricks。 For example, she would use situations such as pickin like outfits and tying that in with greatest common multiple。 。。。more

Ah, FOIL。 Such sweet memories。 And the alligator eating the bigger number in an inequality? That's how I've always learned and remembered it。I love algebra。 And apparently Danica McKellar does, too。 This is a wonderful book explaining so many skills that are needed for algebra, as well as some good, practical advice about many algebraic principles。 However, it's more "girlie-girl" than I thought it might be。 Which I think is a bit short-sighted。 Not all girls are boy-crazy and are into doing the Ah, FOIL。 Such sweet memories。 And the alligator eating the bigger number in an inequality? That's how I've always learned and remembered it。I love algebra。 And apparently Danica McKellar does, too。 This is a wonderful book explaining so many skills that are needed for algebra, as well as some good, practical advice about many algebraic principles。 However, it's more "girlie-girl" than I thought it might be。 Which I think is a bit short-sighted。 Not all girls are boy-crazy and are into doing their nails。 And like a magazine, she gives advice about some of these things。 I think I understand that point, and some of it is stuff that all girls this age might go through, but I think a lot of girls might not identify fully with it。 The distributive property is like saying "hi" to all the guests at a party。 Something I wouldn't have been able to relate to as a teenager。 But something I would have understood。 But absolute value being like a luxury spa? That one might be lost on more people than the party example。However, the material is presented in a very conversational, down-to-earth way that makes it very easy to understand。 McKellar communicates mathematic concepts efficiently and elegantly。 There are great real-world examples of women talk about learning math, but again there's a lot of stereotyping and it feels like the book is saying "you can be feminine and be good at math" instead of "you can be a girl and be good at math"。I did learn a lot of great shortcuts in sure would have been useful through Calculus and beyond。There are good practical examples of using algebra (like your Christmas shopping list)。 There's also good practical advice - that fits well in a book about math - like breaking down overwhelming problems into simpler ones。 And in the 2nd half of the book, she covers algebra with different types of story problems。 Rate, speed, mixtures…I also like the fact that she really encourages girls to write。 Whether it's blogging or journaling or whatever。Of course, every other page it seems like she's referencing her other books。 I understand the point of referring the reader to more material, but at some point it seems to border on self-aggrandization。 But as I kept reading it seemed like these would make great reference books, so maybe it was just a bit over the top。 I might even be tempted to buy them as reference books。 Can't remember how to do absolute value inequalities? Check out Hot-X chapter 8, Control Freaks, Unite (Solving Inequalities with Absolute Value)。 Ooh - and one mistake。 Never refer to x/x (x divided by x) as canceling out。 This gives the impression it might become 0, like x-x。 It would be better to call x/x dividing out to not get confused。I would recommend this to anyone who needed to brush up on their algebra skills or just likes algebra period。 This would also be a great book for a tutor, too。 It would help anyone trying to teach these principles。 。。。more

I didn't actually read this entire book。 It's written for middle school girls and contains a lot of pep talks that don't really apply to this forty-year-old, but the math explanations are put in a way that's easily understood。 I knew that, so I bought it to use as a reference to help get me through Algebra I。 I've just finished my last instructive class in Algebra I as of this writing and I have only consulted this book once。 I don't need it。 I kept it in my backpack all semester as a security b I didn't actually read this entire book。 It's written for middle school girls and contains a lot of pep talks that don't really apply to this forty-year-old, but the math explanations are put in a way that's easily understood。 I knew that, so I bought it to use as a reference to help get me through Algebra I。 I've just finished my last instructive class in Algebra I as of this writing and I have only consulted this book once。 I don't need it。 I kept it in my backpack all semester as a security blanket but barely referred to it。 Highly recommend if you're terrified that you're about to fail this class for the fourth or fifth time, as I was。 I am not failing the class。 I'm getting a solid A so far。 Having this in my arsenal helped me relax a little bit, so I give it five stars。 Because an A in math is no small thing for me。 FIVE STARS。 Just its existence helped me out a lot! 。。。more

I adore MeKellar's books for the simple fact that I grew up in a town (maybe a generation) that believed math and history were "for boys" and reading and writing were "for girls。" Honestly, it was easy for me to believe this considering that I knew nothing about sports and yet I was expected to know how long it took Johnny to get a home run if I knew the distance to first base and the rate he was running at or what a batting average indicated (I understand these now, but elementary/ middle schoo I adore MeKellar's books for the simple fact that I grew up in a town (maybe a generation) that believed math and history were "for boys" and reading and writing were "for girls。" Honestly, it was easy for me to believe this considering that I knew nothing about sports and yet I was expected to know how long it took Johnny to get a home run if I knew the distance to first base and the rate he was running at or what a batting average indicated (I understand these now, but elementary/ middle school me was just baffled)。 When I was reviewing for the GRE I panicked a little when thinking of the math in my work book, so I worked through McKeller's books (Even though they're geared towards high school/ Middle school students) just to review the basics of algebra and geometry。 Despite the fact that I was just reviewing the material, I found that McKellar's books filled in gaps in my education I never knew I had。 The writer delivers the information at a level an older middle school-er should be able to grasp, yet she never talks down to her reader。 I hope that McKellar continues to write books like these because I feel that her writing style does an excellent job at making these topics engaging and easy to grasp, while empowering young readers。 My only complaint is that there should be more practice problems (maybe on the books website?)。Mini-rant/ disclaimer/ run-on sentence: Maybe it's a character flaw that I was able to grasp concepts when put in a more "feminine" context, but I'm positive I'm not the only person out there that feels this way。 。。。more

I'd give this a 9/10 but for the sake of GR, a 4/5 will have to do。I'm a math teacher and I feel that this is a great book for any Algebra student, even males。- I felt that you had to read her previous books to understand some of her references。 Also, she mentioned copycat fractions on page 60 and then said she's get to them later on。 I think they should have been introduced earlier then。- I absolutely love that McKellar reiterates the fact that you CAN'T HAVE ZERO IN THE DENOMINATOR- I don't li I'd give this a 9/10 but for the sake of GR, a 4/5 will have to do。I'm a math teacher and I feel that this is a great book for any Algebra student, even males。- I felt that you had to read her previous books to understand some of her references。 Also, she mentioned copycat fractions on page 60 and then said she's get to them later on。 I think they should have been introduced earlier then。- I absolutely love that McKellar reiterates the fact that you CAN'T HAVE ZERO IN THE DENOMINATOR- I don't like how she uses the word "plug" instead of substitute。 That's just a peeve of mine。 Her "sausage factory" analogy for functions was just odd。 I'd use airplanes and destinations, I think。- There was a great mix of problems regarding difficulty。 I also enjoyed that McKellar was consistently bringing up the fact that division is multiplication with fractions。 Holy crap, I'm going to use that much more often。- Relating polynomials to meals (mee-als) was cute! I giggled and enjoyed it a lot。 There were some great analogies。- I was very confused with why the sum/product puzzle was given before factoring polynomials but not used for them。 About half of my students found that method very useful。My BIGGEST issue was that she shrugged off point-slope form, saying using slope-intercept form was easier when writing equations。 H-to-the-L no。 Even my students who struggled most found p-s form soooo much easier and more direct。 GRRRRRRRI've seen reviews on McKellar's work that her books are a bit mature。 I didn't feel that way。 It's a great reference for both students and teachers。 。。。more

I love this book。 Not only are the lessons clear and easy to follow, but the tone is conversational and engaging。 I have actually used some of the analogies she uses (integers = mintegers and lintegers) to explain integers to my 10 year old son。 Making these abstract concepts into quirky stories helps to break down the math intimidation complex and also makes the abstract comprehensible。 Her mini-stories are amusing and keep me turning pages。 The examples slowly ramp up in difficulty, but she gu I love this book。 Not only are the lessons clear and easy to follow, but the tone is conversational and engaging。 I have actually used some of the analogies she uses (integers = mintegers and lintegers) to explain integers to my 10 year old son。 Making these abstract concepts into quirky stories helps to break down the math intimidation complex and also makes the abstract comprehensible。 Her mini-stories are amusing and keep me turning pages。 The examples slowly ramp up in difficulty, but she guides us impeccably。 Her notes, reminders and "what's it called" boxes are perfectly placed and useful for later reference。 Mostly, though, her overall message that math is accessible to all regardless of age, background or gender is liberating, convincing and encouraging。 She really sells the idea that math is empowering。 And somehow, along the way, she has convinced me that math is。。。 fun!
