Janeway was already my favorite Star Trek captain。 This book made me like her even more。

4。5 starsThis book makes me want to call in sick, grab a cup of coffee, and marathon Star Trek Voyager like the good ol’ days。 As the self-proclaimed number 1 Janeway stan this was a treasure。 The main downside is the recounting of time in the Delta Quadrant reads more as episode summaries, but Kate Mulgrew narrates the audiobook so I have little real issue。

The book gives a lot of great insight and stories of the life of Janeway growing up and pre-Caretaker。 There is some crossover material from Mosaic, which is good that there was some consistency。 I thought this was where the book shined the most。 Once it got into the stories of Voyagers, it did rush through it a bit。 I would have liked more thoughts given on some of the complex situations。 The ending was quick but nice (and there are plenty of novels that cover life after their homecoming)。 The The book gives a lot of great insight and stories of the life of Janeway growing up and pre-Caretaker。 There is some crossover material from Mosaic, which is good that there was some consistency。 I thought this was where the book shined the most。 Once it got into the stories of Voyagers, it did rush through it a bit。 I would have liked more thoughts given on some of the complex situations。 The ending was quick but nice (and there are plenty of novels that cover life after their homecoming)。 The wrap ups about each character made me feel a little emotional。 Voyager was my favorite Trek and I gobbled up each new episode as they aired when I was younger。 I feel more connected to it and the crew than any other Trek。With a few shortcomings, this book is still great。 If you have the opportunity, listen to the audiobook version narrated by Kate Mulgrew。 It makes all the difference。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this book。 Voyager was always my favourite and seeing it told specifically from Janeway perspective was extremely satisfying and really fleshes out the time before and after Voyager If you liked the television series, give this a read。 Really enjoyable。

Even as a fan of Star Trek: Voyager as a TV series, I wasn't quite sure if I'd enjoy this fictional biography of such a beloved character。 But the team behind this title did a GREAT job of weaving a narrative that gives more insight into Janeway as a character by further fleshing out her past while also providing new context for her time on Voyager。 While I doubt we can consider any of this material to be "canon" but that's not the point。 The additional details provided in this book still follow Even as a fan of Star Trek: Voyager as a TV series, I wasn't quite sure if I'd enjoy this fictional biography of such a beloved character。 But the team behind this title did a GREAT job of weaving a narrative that gives more insight into Janeway as a character by further fleshing out her past while also providing new context for her time on Voyager。 While I doubt we can consider any of this material to be "canon" but that's not the point。 The additional details provided in this book still follow the shape of a lot of what we had learned over the course of the show while still not going too overboard into the territory of wild fan fiction or anything like that。Getting the audiobook edition of this title enhanced the experience further with Kate Mulgrew herself handling the narration。 This only makes sense in order to really make this book feel like an autobiography plus who wouldn't want to hear Janeway tell us all her stories in her own voice, right?I thoroughly enjoyed this book, especially as an audio experience。 。。。more

Great for any Voyager fans。 I really enjoyed moment - I was hoping for a bit more in-depth thoughts about some of the famous Voyager situations, but just mentions。 Fascinating heating about her early Star Fleet experiences。

Captain Janeway and the Voyager crew were an acquired taste for me when I first began the series if I’m being entirely honest。 I found Kate Mulgrew’s voice especially grating。 However, by the end of the series, I adored Janeway and each of the crew members。 To further illustrate my evolved feelings for Voyager, I chose to read this book via listening to the audiobook which is narrated by Captain Janeway herself, Kate Mulgrew。 To gain more insight into Janeway as a person and learn of her experie Captain Janeway and the Voyager crew were an acquired taste for me when I first began the series if I’m being entirely honest。 I found Kate Mulgrew’s voice especially grating。 However, by the end of the series, I adored Janeway and each of the crew members。 To further illustrate my evolved feelings for Voyager, I chose to read this book via listening to the audiobook which is narrated by Captain Janeway herself, Kate Mulgrew。 To gain more insight into Janeway as a person and learn of her experiences leading up to, on, and after her command of Voyager was fascinating and only increased my love and respect for the character。 To have some resolution of the crew upon their return to Earth gave such solace considering the abrupt end of the finale。 And of course, Kate Mulgrew narrating “her own” biography was an utter delight。 The experience feels as if you’re sitting fireside with her soaking up her many stories。 I often listen to audiobooks on a faster speed, but couldn’t bring myself to do that with this reading because I wanted to savor the languid reminiscence of Janeway as she told her own story。 As a further recommendation, I would suggest reading the two-part follow-up novels by Christie Golden (Homecoming and The Farther Shore) for an alternative, yet equally satisfying, resolution and aftermath of Voyager’s trip to the Delta Quadrant 。。。more

I have no regrets of reading this book - so two stars, seems harsh I know, and I waffled a bit。 The good of this book were a few well done emotional moments, and the joy of nostalgia though 5 chapters of what amounted to Voyager’s greatest hits。 But otherwise, it was pretty lackluster。 Were it a real Admiral’s autobiography, I would have judged it as guarded and political due to its rose-colored cheer and uncontroversial, milk-toast events。 Not everyone has lived a controversial life - but, ever I have no regrets of reading this book - so two stars, seems harsh I know, and I waffled a bit。 The good of this book were a few well done emotional moments, and the joy of nostalgia though 5 chapters of what amounted to Voyager’s greatest hits。 But otherwise, it was pretty lackluster。 Were it a real Admiral’s autobiography, I would have judged it as guarded and political due to its rose-colored cheer and uncontroversial, milk-toast events。 Not everyone has lived a controversial life - but, everyone has grappled with thoughts, perspectives, etc。 that are more meaningful than long discussions about one’s dog。 I would have at least wanted to hear more thoughts on leadership - that is why Admirals write books! Lastly, a real Admiral likely would not have revealed particular aspects of her crew members shortcomings the way that Janeway did in this account。 That, along with some Star Trek canon discrepancies, broke the illusion for me。 。。。more

As books go, this is a weird one。I find the premise of this book - the autobiography of a fictional character - very fascinating。 (Obviously, fictional autobiographies aren’t a new thing, but it still feels…。like an odd blend of the supposed “factual” autobiography and the fictional Star Trek universe。 I have plans to dig into this more fully for an essay in the upcoming months, so that’s gonna be fun!) And it’s very much one of those things that are produced purely for fan enjoyment。 Which is n As books go, this is a weird one。I find the premise of this book - the autobiography of a fictional character - very fascinating。 (Obviously, fictional autobiographies aren’t a new thing, but it still feels…。like an odd blend of the supposed “factual” autobiography and the fictional Star Trek universe。 I have plans to dig into this more fully for an essay in the upcoming months, so that’s gonna be fun!) I honestly enjoyed the first half of the book, and learning about Katherine's early life and career。 After that though, the book quickly became cliff notes of the series, and really nothing more。 It skimmed right past most major events, didn't delve too deeply into her relationship with her crew, and really gave no insight to Janeway during the series, which was disappointing。 The bonus of the listening to the audiobook, though, was Kate Mulgrew's reading, which was very well done, and it certai I honestly enjoyed the first half of the book, and learning about Katherine's early life and career。 After that though, the book quickly became cliff notes of the series, and really nothing more。 It skimmed right past most major events, didn't delve too deeply into her relationship with her crew, and really gave no insight to Janeway during the series, which was disappointing。 The bonus of the listening to the audiobook, though, was Kate Mulgrew's reading, which was very well done, and it certainly sounded like she had a fun time doing it。 。。。more

Whoever thought of having the awesome Kate Mulgrew read this is a genius。 Her reading is smooth and as intimate as having a cup of coffee with a friend。 While the book goes into the events of Voyager's travels, it adds many details of Janeway's early life and journey to the Captain's seat。 If you like Star Trek, you'll love this。 Whoever thought of having the awesome Kate Mulgrew read this is a genius。 Her reading is smooth and as intimate as having a cup of coffee with a friend。 While the book goes into the events of Voyager's travels, it adds many details of Janeway's early life and journey to the Captain's seat。 If you like Star Trek, you'll love this。 。。。more

A believable fictional memoir of a fictional character。 This book adds little tid-bits here and there and gives personal reflections from Cpt。 Janeway's perspective on events featured in Voyager。 Most interesting parts are in the first half, that details her life up to her first command。 Overall McCormack's book is true to the character and Kate Mulgrew's narration is just as outstanding as her acting on screen。 A believable fictional memoir of a fictional character。 This book adds little tid-bits here and there and gives personal reflections from Cpt。 Janeway's perspective on events featured in Voyager。 Most interesting parts are in the first half, that details her life up to her first command。 Overall McCormack's book is true to the character and Kate Mulgrew's narration is just as outstanding as her acting on screen。 。。。more

Oh holy nostalgia!! I won't lie, I bought and listened to this 95% because Kate Mulgrew narrated the audiobook。 I mean, really - how could I not? Over all, this was fun but not outstanding bookwise。 It was written very much the way a non-fictional memoir is in that there wasn't any kind of plot per say, and it just sort of rambled on throughout the various stages of our (OK fine - MY) favorite Starship Captain's life。 I really enjoyed her Academy days and early career sections in particular - I Oh holy nostalgia!! Even more of the time after the voyage would have been great。 Give me more Admiral Janeway dealing with life after the Delta Quadrant along with her former crewmates。 I liked the little bit we got (and the bonus shipper content hints I was SO HERE FOR), but it really could have been more/gone some very cool places in the memoir format。 I still enjoyed it, don't get me wrong, and it was the kind of low pressure nostalgia audio read I definitely could use during a stressful period in the real world, but it just felt like it could have been so much MORE。 Le sigh。 。。。more

This is slightly strange, but thoroughly charming "autobiography" of Star Trek: Voyager's Captain Janeway。 It's strange in that it's meant to be Janeway's lifestory, but it's very short。 It reads like a memoir abridged for kids。 Details are scarce and huge chunks of Janeway's life are breezed over。 But Una McCormack's a great writer and manages to use the brevity to produce a tone not unlike a Heinlein juvenile novel。 This is a young person's space adventure novel, more of less。 A word of cautio This is slightly strange, but thoroughly charming "autobiography" of Star Trek: Voyager's Captain Janeway。 It's strange in that it's meant to be Janeway's lifestory, but it's very short。 It reads like a memoir abridged for kids。 Details are scarce and huge chunks of Janeway's life are breezed over。 But Una McCormack's a great writer and manages to use the brevity to produce a tone not unlike a Heinlein juvenile novel。 This is a young person's space adventure novel, more of less。 A word of caution to the continuity-obsessed。 McCormack doesn't use much (any?) of the Relaunch Voyager novels continuity。 This upsets people despite the fact that these are fictional characters and none of it is any more "real" than any other。 I especially liked McCormack's vision of the Voyager crew's life post-return。 Freed of any need to preserve a status quo for future stories, she gives the cast much more satisfying, and believable, later lives。 。。。more

THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF KATHRYN JANEWAY is a book I preordered but I also was back and forth by。 Janeway is a character I deeply enjoy but she often played the role of the straight woman on Voyager with Kate Mulgrew focused on making her a role model versus the darker backstories of Kirk (Kodos the Executioner) or Picard (with his Stargazer/hellraiser past)。 I also admit to wishing we'd gotten a Ben Sisko Autobiography first。 The problem with the book is, and this is not on the writer, but she is i THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF KATHRYN JANEWAY is a book I preordered but I also was back and forth by。 Janeway is a character I deeply enjoy but she often played the role of the straight woman on Voyager with Kate Mulgrew focused on making her a role model versus the darker backstories of Kirk (Kodos the Executioner) or Picard (with his Stargazer/hellraiser past)。 I also admit to wishing we'd gotten a Ben Sisko Autobiography first。 The problem with the book is, and this is not on the writer, but she is incredibly boring as a person。 The first 1/5th of the book is her talking about how she used to play tennis but was a bad sport and that her mother wrote children's books。 Indeed, a large portion of the book has very little to do with the Delta Quadrant but is a "slice of life" of the Federation with how she dumped her first serious boyfriend because he wanted to have kids (with her raising them) and that she really disliked her XO on her first major assignment。I really liked her love of Amelia Earhart and how that relatively minor incident was one of the major ones that stuck with her。 Also, the fact that Tuvix is one of her biggest regrets。 Strangely, no Chakotay romance and that was a shame。 Still, I give props to Una McCormack to livening up someone you'd want to avoid at a party。 。。。more

It's well written (given that the author is Una McCormack, that's no surprise), and right up until Janeway takes command of Voyager, it's a fascinating and absorbing look at her past life。 But once we reach Voyager, it simply breezes through her 7 years in the Delta Quadrant, and the analysis of her experiences and character become superficial, compared to what came before。 As to the conclusion, it's deliberatley vague, considering what could be established in future Trek episodes on TV。。。but it It's well written (given that the author is Una McCormack, that's no surprise), and right up until Janeway takes command of Voyager, it's a fascinating and absorbing look at her past life。 But once we reach Voyager, it simply breezes through her 7 years in the Delta Quadrant, and the analysis of her experiences and character become superficial, compared to what came before。 As to the conclusion, it's deliberatley vague, considering what could be established in future Trek episodes on TV。。。but it adds to my overall dissatisfaction。 It just doesn't end as well as it began。 。。。more

I am 70 pages in and I am very disappointed。 I read Jeri Taylor's book when it first came out。 It defined the character we were introduced to in 1995。 Kate Mulgrew may have helped Jeri Taylor shape and define the character she was portraying which made it a believable autobiography。 What Una McCormack did seems to rewrite everything Jeri Taylor established。 It's an okay read but "Mosaic" by Jeri Taylor is much better。 I am 70 pages in and I am very disappointed。 I read Jeri Taylor's book when it first came out。 It defined the character we were introduced to in 1995。 Kate Mulgrew may have helped Jeri Taylor shape and define the character she was portraying which made it a believable autobiography。 What Una McCormack did seems to rewrite everything Jeri Taylor established。 It's an okay read but "Mosaic" by Jeri Taylor is much better。 。。。more
