Summary

WHAT VALUABLE COMPANY IS NOBODY BUILDING?

The next Bill Gates will not build an operating system。 The next Larry Page or Sergey Brin won’t make a search engine。 If you are copying these guys, you aren’t learning from them。 It’s easier to copy a model than to make something new: doing what we already know how to do takes the world from 1 to n, adding more of something familiar。 Every new creation goes from 0 to 1。 This book is about how to get there。

‘Peter Thiel has built multiple breakthrough companies, and Zero to One shows how。’
ELON MUSK, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla

‘This book delivers completely new and refreshing ideas on how to create value in the world。’
MARK ZUCKERBERG, CEO of Facebook

‘When a risk taker writes a book, read it。 In the case of Peter Thiel, read it twice。 Or, to be safe, three times。 This is a classic。’
NASSIM NICHOLAS TALEB, author of The Black Swan

I didn’t agree with everything Thiel espoused in this book, but there is no doubt it is thought-provoking, novel, and enjoyable。 The idea of going from zero to one and Thiel’s premise of optimistic and deterministic (versus pessimistic and unknowable) visions of the future is both simple and applicable and is a great philosophical idea to internalize。 This is a must-read for anybody interested in venture, start-ups, and technological progress。

Overall solid book, and well worth reading。 If you’re already deep in the tech space you probably won’t get any life-changing, earth-shattering insights, but he systematizes a lot of what makes exponentially growing startups either work of fail, and I appreciate Thiel’s distilled insights and the way he calls BS on most “disruptive” companies。 The four personality matrix was something I had not considered and think this is one of the more valuable insights in the book。I also really appreciate hi Overall solid book, and well worth reading。 If you’re already deep in the tech space you probably won’t get any life-changing, earth-shattering insights, but he systematizes a lot of what makes exponentially growing startups either work of fail, and I appreciate Thiel’s distilled insights and the way he calls BS on most “disruptive” companies。 The four personality matrix was something I had not considered and think this is one of the more valuable insights in the book。I also really appreciate his level headed approach。 For example, his approach to “disruptive” new “exponential” technologies like AI stands in sharp contrast to the majority view in tech circles that humans will be obsolete and unemployed in the near future and rather sees everything in positive sum terms。 This also comes across in his approach to competition, which closely follows my own views。My only sharp disagreement comes in his views on company foundations。 First, I think he gets correlation and causation totally backward and risks turning tech into a cult of sorts when he claims that he will never back a founder who dresses up; because of course everyone knows technologists wear jeans and a t-shirt。 I understand what he’s getting at, and what you wear does say something about you, but this totally misses the boat。 And I say this as one who fits the stereotype。Second, his views on CEO pay also come across completely wrong headed。 First, he makes an elementary mistake of using and absolute number as a line in the sand without respect to geography or inflation。 I think the point he’s trying to make is that a CEO making tens of millions per year would have little incentive to do anything but collect his paycheck and maintain the status quo。 But he doesn’t really spell this out or go into the pitfalls of stock based compensation either。Finally, I vehemently disagree with him on remote work。 While I agree there is no substitute for face time, I firmly believe that remote work is the future and we’ll all live much better lives as a result of improved collaboration tools, and save a crap load of money on rent, communing expenses, etc。 It’s frankly baffling how he can be so far sighted and on point about so much else but get this so terribly wrong。 。。。more

A practical and philosophical take on how to build a successful company。 I found the passages about competition/monopoly, optimism/pessimism, and secrets to be particularly great。 There were times I felt that the thoughts being expressed were particularly profound。 They made me question things I’m pursuing in my career and whether or not I’m doing the right things。 This book is worth the read。

Got into this book to read Thiel's outlook on the nature of the future, who will shape it, and how we will get there。 It's interesting to see that while there is "indefinite optimism" for the distant future, he still talks about what it may look like。 At some places, he ends up taking Gladwell-ish approach, where one example is used to drive his contrarian viewpoint which does not necessarily hold for other examples that exist (or will come along)。 Some of the best ideas in this book are actuall Got into this book to read Thiel's outlook on the nature of the future, who will shape it, and how we will get there。 It's interesting to see that while there is "indefinite optimism" for the distant future, he still talks about what it may look like。 At some places, he ends up taking Gladwell-ish approach, where one example is used to drive his contrarian viewpoint which does not necessarily hold for other examples that exist (or will come along)。 Some of the best ideas in this book are actually questions: 1) What important truth do very few people agree with you on?2) What good companies ( product/services ) will still be around 10 years from now?3) What valuable company is no one building?Other ideas: By the time a student gets to college, he's spent a decade curating a bewilderingly diverse resume to prepare for a completely unknowable future。 Come what may, he's ready--for nothing in particular。In business, money is either an important thing or it is everything。Winning is better than losing, but everybody loses when the war isn't one worth fighting。 Overall impressed at Thiel's frugality and clarity with words to condense a never-ending discussion to a small book full of LOTR references。 I wish the authors update their viewpoints every ten years。 。。。more

The best book on startups and technopreneurship。 A must read for innovators and entrepreneurs。 Lessons from known successful startups such as PayPal are presented in an objective and insightful manner。

It is a great book about entrepreneurship。 I am most impressed by the question: what commonly held assumptions would you reject? As an economics student, I only think about the benefits of competition。 The book lets me think from the other side。 Also there is the opposite of a normally distributed table for being a genius, with the right-side being technical and the left-side being artistic。 I would recommend this book for students and entrepreneurs。

I felt, this was the most funkiest book I have ever read … Although I picked this one thinking it as 'self-development' (Also, I read Kindle version so there was no familiarity with blurb) 。。。 but it came something as Gyan on Start-ups …I can see a lot of my MBA friends have already read this (I am not an MBA, though I tried for it but couldn't pursue) … I know now why it is :)I have no skill or idea or money for any start-up … still I loved what was told in the book … Also, Peter Theil is big b I felt, this was the most funkiest book I have ever read … Although I picked this one thinking it as 'self-development' (Also, I read Kindle version so there was no familiarity with blurb) 。。。 but it came something as Gyan on Start-ups …I can see a lot of my MBA friends have already read this (I am not an MBA, though I tried for it but couldn't pursue) … I know now why it is :)I have no skill or idea or money for any start-up … still I loved what was told in the book … Also, Peter Theil is big billionaire and was co-founder of Pay-Pal, but I had no idea of who is he before (May be you think, it is dumb, still it is truth) … But man, this book indeed has revolutionary ideas and at some places, little not only thought provoking but pushing beyond the limits。 I even made notes of it in my diary and became instant fan of his thinking and the mechanics of differentiation。I loved the idea of every great thing that is built around a secret that’s hidden from the outside。 。。。more

This book is good, Peter Thiel explains how to build a startup and run it because every moment in business only happens once。Then about the act of creating something new, because every time we create something new, we go from zero to one。 The act of creation is something singular, like the moment of creation, and the result is something fresh, new, and unusual。

This book is more or less confused piece of writing。 Being a novice startup reader, I did not have something comparative study。 However, Books starts with good introduction and it gives you sense is something incredible coming further。 However, Author put an agenda but fail to explain what he is actually trying to say。 Sometimes, He contradicts too much and bring about pessimistic worldview。 Overall, if you have free time, you should read it but you can skip this book with some better version on This book is more or less confused piece of writing。 Being a novice startup reader, I did not have something comparative study。 However, Books starts with good introduction and it gives you sense is something incredible coming further。 However, Author put an agenda but fail to explain what he is actually trying to say。 Sometimes, He contradicts too much and bring about pessimistic worldview。 Overall, if you have free time, you should read it but you can skip this book with some better version on startup。 。。。more
