Summary

4。5; this was one hefty story and it could be likened to a patchwork tapestry - you get bits and pieces here and there without really understanding anything (which is why the first 100 or so pages was so confusing) but with some time jumps and getting to know the characters, everything falls into place :') i will say it's quite different to the book thief and the messenger, just because it was so fragmented, but the jumping back and forth only contributed to the raw storytelling, and made the en 4。5; this was one hefty story and it could be likened to a patchwork tapestry - you get bits and pieces here and there without really understanding anything (which is why the first 100 or so pages was so confusing) but with some time jumps and getting to know the characters, everything falls into place :') i will say it's quite different to the book thief and the messenger, just because it was so fragmented, but the jumping back and forth only contributed to the raw storytelling, and made the ending all the more heartwrenching。 will definitely need to reread again in the future 。。。more

I finished it。 End was good, rest was average。

How dare Markus Zusak write another devastatingly beautiful novel that I have to stay up until 1:00 am to finish only to be wrecked by it - please read this but only if you are ready to cry。

I read everything Markus Zusak writes and always love his work。 An artist of prose。

This book has a likable story that will make you want to keep reading。 The emotional rollercoaster that the characters go through is insane。

I honestly liked the story, but I found it to be very disjointed。 After having enjoyed The Book Thief so much, I was expecting more。

This book is definitely a long, slow burn but I enjoyed this story of 5 broken hearted brothers and their commitment to their family。 I did find the ongoing ‘teasers’ a little frustrating at times and given the size of the book and the detail in the back story, I felt like there wasn’t enough closure/explanation in the relationship between Michael and his boys - it felt a bit rushed at the end。 I loved reading about Penelope and her impact on her sons lives and found it hard to read some of the This book is definitely a long, slow burn but I enjoyed this story of 5 broken hearted brothers and their commitment to their family。 I did find the ongoing ‘teasers’ a little frustrating at times and given the size of the book and the detail in the back story, I felt like there wasn’t enough closure/explanation in the relationship between Michael and his boys - it felt a bit rushed at the end。 I loved reading about Penelope and her impact on her sons lives and found it hard to read some of the later chapters about her without crying。 。。。more

Hard to read at times, jumps around from place to place and from person to person an awful lot with very little warning。 A little confusing - to be honest I’m still not entirely sure what the plot actually was?? So I may have to reread at some point in the future。 A little hard to fall into a natural rhythm with reading it, but the parts that were not so confusing and easier to read, I did enjoy quite a lot。

This book surprised me。 I was initially disappointed in this book。 It was slow and not that interesting。 I didn't really feel a connection to the characters but I kept reading。 Somewhere in the late middle of the book, I realized that I was invested in the characters and their lives。 By the end, I was crying, truly emotionally invested in the story。 This book surprised me。 I was initially disappointed in this book。 It was slow and not that interesting。 I didn't really feel a connection to the characters but I kept reading。 Somewhere in the late middle of the book, I realized that I was invested in the characters and their lives。 By the end, I was crying, truly emotionally invested in the story。 。。。more

A good story told badly。 I really had to work hard to get through this and almost didn’t come back to it a few times。 It’s painfully slow and the way the story jumps around is confusing。 Some of the prose is beautiful and the plot is the kind of thing I normally enjoy, but it was a slog to get there。

The way in which the brothers contrasted one another worked so well。On several occasions the story-telling brought a lump to my throat, and that's rare for me。 All in all, sublime story-telling, wonderful characterization, subtly brutal with much humor among a theme of loss。Very much enjoyed。 。。。more

Hard to follow for most of it。 But the chaotic writing was probably intended to mirror the chaotic lives of the characters and there are definitely some brilliant moments。 To each their own!

I don’t know if I would recommend this book to everyone - I didn’t even think I would like it myself at first。 It’s full of twisting metaphors and long descriptions。 But once I got into the stories of the Dunbar family, I loved how it was written, and all those metaphors and descriptions seemed essential to the book。 It’s about the lives of the five Dunbar boys, and their parents’ lives, and all the twists and turns that got them to the bridge of clay。 It’s not a fast-paced book with lots of act I don’t know if I would recommend this book to everyone - I didn’t even think I would like it myself at first。 It’s full of twisting metaphors and long descriptions。 But once I got into the stories of the Dunbar family, I loved how it was written, and all those metaphors and descriptions seemed essential to the book。 It’s about the lives of the five Dunbar boys, and their parents’ lives, and all the twists and turns that got them to the bridge of clay。 It’s not a fast-paced book with lots of action, but I always wanted to keep reading。 。。。more

How to rate this book? How to review it? What do I even think of it? Well, here goes。The first tenth was hard going and if it had been by an unknown author, I may well have given up。 And that's an interesting point - surely very few people come to this book without knowing that it is by the author of "The Book Thief" and most having loved that book。 It certainly influenced me and possibly many other readers/reviewers who, I think, have given Zusak an easy ride。 On the plus side,I felt familiar f How to rate this book? The narrator was the eldest of the five Dunbar brothers, speaking from his own point of view and also, without warning, omnisciently outside his personal experience。 I often found this confusing, and for several early sections I had to keep checking back to page 3 to get the brothers names in order (Clay is number 4) which is very important in any family story。 The sections jump back and forth across times and places, gradually revealing many storylines, although some never made sense to me。 For example, what was the significance of the typewriter which features largely in the mysterious prologue, is later buried and much later disinterred - why? And I hated all the detailed descriptions of horrible physical fighting among the brothers and their peers。 However did the saintly mother, Penny, allow her boys to behave like that to each other? It was an established pattern before she died。 Finally, the vague and weak ending was a serious disappointment。 。。。more

How on earth could he get so much detail from Clay, the boy who is known for being talkative when he uses 8 words? Michael Dunbar: the Dad who fled。 The Murderer (also, listening to this I was unsure if this title was capitalised, so for the first half of this book I thought he was an actual murderer omfg)。 I thought I was going to hate Michael。 I never fully grasped why he fled。 WHY。 WHY wouldn't you want to be with your 5 boys, that you made with your now-dead wife? I've never experienced any of this, but to me。。。 I feel I would cling to the family I've got, especially after my wife dies。 Penny Dunbar: I WANT AN ENTIRE BOOK ABOUT PENNY'S LIFE。 Penelope Dunbar, Michael's wife, was a Polish/Russian refugee。 Her story and escape from 1950s Eastern Europe is amazing。 I want to investigate where Zusack comes from now。。。 If this book focused more on Penny, Michael, and Abby, I would have rated it 5 stars。 Abby Hanley: yo hey I loved this character and I relate very much to her and wow we have the same last name。 PLOT:There's a million plots going on。 There's:- Penny's life story- Michael's life story- Abby and Michael's relationship - Penny and Michael's relationship- "Before" Penny died- "After" Penny died- Clay working on a bridge with his Dad (help btw I can't find the significance of this symbolism)- Matthew and his wife, Claire- The other brothers: Rory, the deadbeat, the older brother who I think was named Henry (he had no point to the story), and the youngest who I can't remember the name of, but collected animals。 - Clay and his girlfriend STRUCTURE:This book is SCATTERED。 It is NOT chronological, so FYI if that's going to confuse you。 Characters and moments replay over again, however, told from a different perspective or context。 Each chapter/section is about either the adults (Michael/Penny/Abby) or the Dunbar boys。 THEMES:- motherhood- family responsibility- love, and outgrowing yourself or your partner- coming-of-age- brotherhood- Bridges????????????????????- family death - abandonment THE ENDING:The ending was anti-climatic。 The book, for me, ended when Penny died。 I still felt there was so much left unknown by the end。 IMPACT:I LOVED this story, but purely for the adults。 Not the kids。 。。。more

I had a really hard time getting into this book, and it was kind of a let down overall—which is extra sad because I loved Zusak's other books (The Book Thief and I Am the Messenger) quite a lot, giving them 5 and 4 stars respectively。 I didn't feel connected to any of the characters or the plot。 I didn't hate it。 It was just okay。 I had a really hard time getting into this book, and it was kind of a let down overall—which is extra sad because I loved Zusak's other books (The Book Thief and I Am the Messenger) quite a lot, giving them 5 and 4 stars respectively。 I didn't feel connected to any of the characters or the plot。 I didn't hate it。 It was just okay。 。。。more
