Summary

ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR
NPR - THE A。V。 CLUB

From the creator of the beloved and universally acclaimed television series BoJack Horseman, a fabulously off-beat collection of short stories about love--the best and worst thing in the universe。

"Complex, daring, emotional, and unique, with notes of melancholic brilliance and an aftertaste of subtle elation: it is hard to describe the writing of Raphael Bob-Waksberg without sounding like Frasier discussing wine。"
--B。 J。 Novak, author of One More Thing

Written with all the scathing dark humor that is a hallmark of BoJack Horseman, Raphael Bob-Waksberg's stories will make you laugh, weep, and shiver in uncomfortably delicious recognition。 In "A Most Blessed and Auspicious Occasion," a young couple engaged to be married is forced to deal with interfering relatives dictating the appropriate number of ritual goat sacrifices for their wedding。 "Missed Connection--m4w" is the tragicomic tale of a pair of lonely commuters eternally failing to make that longed-for contact。 And in "More of the You That You Already Are," a struggling employee at a theme park of dead presidents finds that love can't be genetically modified。

Equally at home with the surreal and the painfully relatable (and both at once), Bob-Waksberg delivers a killer combination of humor, romance, whimsy, cultural commentary, and crushing emotional vulnerability。

Enjoyed the playful writing but the stories felt a bit cliche and didn’t really hit emotionally the way it seems like they were meant to。 Ended up DNF-ing midway but might try to give it another chance sometime

Sometimes you read books that are real and deep and sad and funny - and the entire spectrum。 This was one of those books。Someone had recommended it to me and had failed to tell me it was a collection of short stories。 I wouldn't have read it if I had known - I don't usually enjoy short stories。 Thankfully, they did not tell me or I would have missed out。Sometimes this book made me laugh out loud: planning a wedding, the antics of the superheroes, the dry humor, the on-point'edness of plays (Lord Sometimes you read books that are real and deep and sad and funny - and the entire spectrum。 This was one of those books。Someone had recommended it to me and had failed to tell me it was a collection of short stories。 I wouldn't have read it if I had known - I don't usually enjoy short stories。 Thankfully, they did not tell me or I would have missed out。Sometimes this book made me laugh out loud: planning a wedding, the antics of the superheroes, the dry humor, the on-point'edness of plays (Lord, all the shit about plays!)。 And somehow, pages or paragraphs or sentences later, I am flayed。 The realness of what it means to be an individual, all your experiences and memories and choices。 What it means to be lonely, to say goodbye。 I finished this book and thought - I want to spend my time only caring about the important stuff in my life rather than stressing about all the bullshit。 This book made me think about my life, what I want, who I want to be。 That, to me, is a worthwhile read。 。。。more

It’s a collection of short stories。 Some touched my heart, some lacked that power。 Some I love, some I got bored reading。

This collection of short stories has the same dark humor, wistfulness and absurdity of Bojack Horseman。 Some stories were definitely better than others, probably having to do with how much you can relate to it, but they all manage to make you laugh at one moment and sad the next。

I really enjoyed this book。 The author created Bojack Horseman (one of my favorite tv shows) so I had high expectations (which were met)。 This was a beautiful collection of stories that didn't take themself too seriously but seriously enough that I laughed out loud at times, and cried several times (in public once)。 The language is extremely accessible。 Raphael Bob-Waksberg artfully articulates the feelings of anxiety, pessimism, responsibility, and heartbreak that I feel/felt。 Would recommend t I really enjoyed this book。 The author created Bojack Horseman (one of my favorite tv shows) so I had high expectations (which were met)。 This was a beautiful collection of stories that didn't take themself too seriously but seriously enough that I laughed out loud at times, and cried several times (in public once)。 The language is extremely accessible。 Raphael Bob-Waksberg artfully articulates the feelings of anxiety, pessimism, responsibility, and heartbreak that I feel/felt。 Would recommend to all my friends。 。。。more

This was a really weird book but uniquely funny from time to time。 Each story is narrated in a kinda outrageous manner but has an underlying meaning for readers to discover which I thought was pretty clever of the author。

Solid 3。5 stars。 To preface, I’m someone who reads mostly in the spec-fic subgenres, but I felt like what I heard about Bob-Waksberg’s eccentric storytelling pushed this collection far enough into my area of interest。 If nothing else, Someone Who Will Love You in All Your Damaged Glory contains some pretty intriguing explorations of form – we’re talking short stories captured in bulleted lists, pseudo board game instructions, poetry imitating that of cheesy Hallmark cards, etc。 The one thing tha Solid 3。5 stars。 To preface, I’m someone who reads mostly in the spec-fic subgenres, but I felt like what I heard about Bob-Waksberg’s eccentric storytelling pushed this collection far enough into my area of interest。 If nothing else, Someone Who Will Love You in All Your Damaged Glory contains some pretty intriguing explorations of form – we’re talking short stories captured in bulleted lists, pseudo board game instructions, poetry imitating that of cheesy Hallmark cards, etc。 The one thing that stays the same across the various stories is Bob-Waksberg’s narrative voice, which sounds a bit like Holden Caulfield if he had a better sense of humor。 Although it’s not the kind of style I usually gravitate towards, it’s really charming when paired with absurdist plots and themes of love, all meandering sentences and repetitive vocabulary that somehow end up effectively describing feelings that seemed previously indescribable。 Though there’s a lot to like about this book, I have to say that the shorter stories in the collection are what pulled the rating down for me。 I’m not the biggest fan of flash fiction (which is what the very shortest of the stories were bordering on), so while those brief pieces were still fun to read, most of them seem to be either 1) tailored to suit a specific experimental element rather than leveraging the experimental element to serve the story, or 2) written around a very quotable but unsubtle conclusion about the nature of love。 The longer stories generally avoid the above and come across as more organic in their whimsy, which I prefer。 If you’re only planning to read a few stories from the collection, I’d recommend the following: “The Serial Monogamist’s Guide to Important New York City Landmarks,” “Up-and-Comers,” “Rufus,” “Rules for Taboo,” and “The Average of All Possible Things。” 。。。more

While it may not carry the same punch that Bojack Horseman does, “Someone Who Will Love You In All Your Damaged Glory” is a pretty fun, somber and absurdist collections of short stories focusing on relationships。 It may not make the most original statements about love, but it delivers it in an entertaining format that is hard to put down and some quotes that really hit home。Some fave stories: Lunch With The Person Who Dumped You, ❤️ Rufus ❤️, The Average of All Possible Things

Bizzare, but in a meaningful manner。 What else could be expected from the creator of Bojack Horseman?Out of all these short stories only two or three were not good。 The rest of them, even if they were one page in length, were absolutely engrossing。 The characters, the scenes, the awkward situations everything was well explained and established。 And, ofcourse, it was funny。 It was mainly about love and the stupidity of love and the absurdity of love and the, you know, the whole concept of love。 I Bizzare, but in a meaningful manner。 What else could be expected from the creator of Bojack Horseman?Out of all these short stories only two or three were not good。 The rest of them, even if they were one page in length, were absolutely engrossing。 The characters, the scenes, the awkward situations everything was well explained and established。 And, ofcourse, it was funny。 It was mainly about love and the stupidity of love and the absurdity of love and the, you know, the whole concept of love。 In the beginning I thought there was only going to be romantic relationship stuffs but then it started to dive into variety of love。 Like the love for a stranger or your stepbrother you never met。 There was even a story from a dog's perspective and it was so devastating, I can't-Would definitely recommend even if you haven't watched the show。 It is rare to find a good short story collection。 。。。more

4。5 i liked most of the stories except for a couple that just weren’t for me and were so hard to get through but i really enjoyed the writing style。

Weird and wonderful。 The stories were laugh out loud funny at times but also heartfelt and contemplative。 “A Most Blessed and Auspicious Occasion” and “The Average of All Possible Things” were standout stories for me。 The cast that narrates the audiobook was also great。

This was so weirdly wonderful, melancholy and laugh-out-loud funny all at once。 Definitely listen to the audio!

Well written, and impressive and touching at times。 Love stories playing upon familiar tropes, many taking place in alternate realities or familiar worlds with weird twists。
