Summary

The totally gripping and irresistible new thriller from the best-selling author of Stay Alive, The Final Minute and The Witness。

When the bones of a 21-year old woman who went missing without trace in Thailand in 1990, are discovered in the grounds of an old Catholic school in Buckinghamshire, an enduring mystery takes on a whole new twist。 Her boyfriend at the time, and the man who reported her missing, Henry Forbes, now a middle-aged university lecturer, comes forward with his lawyer and tells DI Ray Mason of the Met’s Homicide Command that he knows what happened to Kitty, and who killed her。

So begins a hunt for the truth that will focus on a ruthless crime gang, a rich, dysfunctional family with a terrible past, and a highly ambitious man so cruel and ruthless that he must be brought down at any cost。。。

Dark。 The story starts off well enough and follows a couple fo decent threads through a pretty dark plot with some unpleasant characters, who are all bit shallow despite the authors attempts to provide some background。 The story weaves reasonably well before accelerating into a rushed finish leaving a few loose ends - which may be the authors intent if this is the first in a series; which I can't tell if it is from the story。A bit unsatisfactory, I've put this down several times and almost force Dark。 The story starts off well enough and follows a couple fo decent threads through a pretty dark plot with some unpleasant characters, who are all bit shallow despite the authors attempts to provide some background。 The story weaves reasonably well before accelerating into a rushed finish leaving a few loose ends - which may be the authors intent if this is the first in a series; which I can't tell if it is from the story。A bit unsatisfactory, I've put this down several times and almost forced myself to complete it - not that its badly written, more that it didn't grab me consistently。 。。。more

I did enjoy this and it is quite obviously Part 1 of the story。 Probably would have liked a bit more resolution to the investigation, but a good read nonetheless。 Will definitely read the next instalment。

If you want a fast-moving story about nasty people doing nasty things and good coppers having to play a bit nasty themselves, then this is the book for you。 Some sort of Satanism that masks or covers up for sadistic sexual preferences among the wealthy, the trafficking of young women, corruption among private school elites, assassins who take pleasure in their work, guns, knives, blood, pressure from superior officers – oh yes, it’s all here。I won’t read another book by Simon Kernick, but he kno If you want a fast-moving story about nasty people doing nasty things and good coppers having to play a bit nasty themselves, then this is the book for you。 Some sort of Satanism that masks or covers up for sadistic sexual preferences among the wealthy, the trafficking of young women, corruption among private school elites, assassins who take pleasure in their work, guns, knives, blood, pressure from superior officers – oh yes, it’s all here。I won’t read another book by Simon Kernick, but he knows his genre and delivers a pacy thriller-and-spiller whose story gripped and appalled me。One star because I did not like it; four stars because it's very good of its genre。 。。。more

Excellent thrilling readI loved the tension with this novel。 Human trafficking is horrendous and something that is all too familiar。 I loved Ray's character and how he doesn't abide by the rules。 No holds barred with this, highly recommended Excellent thrilling readI loved the tension with this novel。 Human trafficking is horrendous and something that is all too familiar。 I loved Ray's character and how he doesn't abide by the rules。 No holds barred with this, highly recommended 。。。more

Vintage Kernick。 Fast paced, violent, big mystery at the start, lots of death, insubordination 。。。。。 This is no different but somehow it lost steam from 3/5 of the book onwards。 This book didn't do it for me Vintage Kernick。 Fast paced, violent, big mystery at the start, lots of death, insubordination 。。。。。 This is no different but somehow it lost steam from 3/5 of the book onwards。 This book didn't do it for me 。。。more

It took me a little while longer to get into the story, but overall it was another solid read for me。 It's the second book with Ray Mason, but it's no big deal if you haven't read 'The Witness' beforehand。 It's also the first book of the 'The Bone Field' series, so keep in mind that there will be added more to the story。 The book was tense and thrilling just how I like it。 Ray and Tina are a great team in my opinion and I can't wait to read more! Beat the backlist reading challenge 2021: book about bones OR “bone” in the titleThis almost qualified for the “WTF” plot twist given this was my exact reaction to the vertiginous cliffhanger ending。 Luckily, and with barely time for a comfort break after finishing this, I plucked The Hanged Man from my TBR pile and with a relish often now associated with binge watching box-sets, I ploughed straight in。。。

ExcellentNot the first Simon Kernick that I have read。 This one hit the ground running, action from word one to the very end。 DI Mason finds him self in the middle of the action again, with a few old friend, of which he doesn't have many, he is trying to solve a old missing person case which is now a murder。 Excellent。 ExcellentNot the first Simon Kernick that I have read。 This one hit the ground running, action from word one to the very end。 DI Mason finds him self in the middle of the action again, with a few old friend, of which he doesn't have many, he is trying to solve a old missing person case which is now a murder。 Excellent。 。。。more

7/10 17%。 Good story, the usual disenfranchised policeman, well written but no real plot to crack and a disappointing ending。 Won’t read again。

ThrillingSimon Kernick's Ray Mason is one of those cops that you know walks a very careful line between legal and illegal。 Here he becomes involved in a case which stems from a young woman dying in Thailand。 Pretty soon he is chasing leads all over the UK and Europe and then comes across an old colleague, Dan Watts, who is working for the NCA。 Their cases seem to be linked but neither has sufficient evidence to prove it。 The investigation becomes a nightmare for Mason。 Where will it end? For me, Simon Kernick always writes a darn good novel。 I have read a few derogatory reviews of this particular book and okay everybody has their own point of view but like I say for me he has done it again。 The ending seems to lead to a sequel, but I have discovered that it is more than likely a trilogy which to me is interesting because I don’t think I have read or seen a crime/thriller trilogy before。Anyhow, the bones of two females are unearthed in the grounds of a school, one of them being o For me, Simon Kernick always writes a darn good novel。 I have read a few derogatory reviews of this particular book and okay everybody has their own point of view but like I say for me he has done it again。 The ending seems to lead to a sequel, but I have discovered that it is more than likely a trilogy which to me is interesting because I don’t think I have read or seen a crime/thriller trilogy before。Anyhow, the bones of two females are unearthed in the grounds of a school, one of them being of a young woman who disappeared and was believed to have been murdered in Thailand back in 1990, the other being a thirteen year old girl who disappeared the year before, both cases were never solved。 DI Ray Mason takes up these mysterious cases and finds that they are related, along the way he enlists the help of one of our old friends Tina Body, who is now a private detective。 As always they find themselves in more danger than they bargained for。 Ray gets himself into a few nasty incidents and so becomes the interest of internal affairs and is thrown off the case by his infuriated boss。 Does this deter him? Simon has a way of keeping you reading and turning the pages, he also creates some very good characters and develops really intriguing plots。 I’m looking forward to part two, The Hanged Man。Full marks 5/5 。。。more

Good, clearly setting up for the next book in the series at end。

Gemma Hancock

Really really good book。 Only reason its not 5 stars is because every chapter seems to end with a statement such as "but it turned out not to be true" which begins to get a bit repetitive。 Really really good book。 Only reason its not 5 stars is because every chapter seems to end with a statement such as "but it turned out not to be true" which begins to get a bit repetitive。 。。。more

Fast-paced, gripping action, centred around a good mystery。 Kept me glued to the pages until the ending, which I found rather disappointing。 Call me old fashioned, but I think a mystery book should always answer at least some of the questions at the end of the book, even if it is the first of a series。 The Bone Field provides a great build up, but the ending doesn't even hint at the answers, which left me feeling deflated and a little irritated。 Fast-paced, gripping action, centred around a good mystery。 Kept me glued to the pages until the ending, which I found rather disappointing。 Call me old fashioned, but I think a mystery book should always answer at least some of the questions at the end of the book, even if it is the first of a series。 The Bone Field provides a great build up, but the ending doesn't even hint at the answers, which left me feeling deflated and a little irritated。 。。。more
