Summary

Many parents feel pressured to “train” babies and young children to sleep but kids don’t need to be trained to sleep, they’re built to sleep。 Sleep issues arise when parents (with the best of intentions) over-help or “helicopter parent” at night—overshadowing their baby’s innate biological ability to sleep well。 In The Happy Sleeper child sleep experts Heather Turgeon and Julie Wright show parents how to be sensitive and nurturing, but also clear and structured so that babies and young children develop the self-soothing skills they need to

•       Fall asleep independently
•       Sleep through the night
•       Take healthy naps
•       Grow into natural, optimal sleep patterns for day and night

The Happy Sleeper is a research-based guide to helping children do what comes naturally—sleep through the night。

The Happy Sleeper features a foreword by neuropsychiatrist and popular parenting expert Dr。 Daniel Siegel, author of Parenting from the Inside Out and the New York Times bestseller Brainstorm

The topic of sleep for young children seems to be a minefield of emotion for many people。 I don't think there is one right way to help your child figure out their sleep, but it seems like lots of people who struggle are trying to get a child to do things the parents' way versus being attuned to the needs, desires, and emerging capabilities of their kid。 I chose this because Dan Seigel wrote the intro and I don't believe he would endorse a method contrary to the interpersonal neurobiology theorie The topic of sleep for young children seems to be a minefield of emotion for many people。 I don't think there is one right way to help your child figure out their sleep, but it seems like lots of people who struggle are trying to get a child to do things the parents' way versus being attuned to the needs, desires, and emerging capabilities of their kid。 I chose this because Dan Seigel wrote the intro and I don't believe he would endorse a method contrary to the interpersonal neurobiology theories he espouses in his other work (in other words, more than trauma-informed)。 In order to grow and develop, sometimes we have to push our kids a bit, i。e。 giving them time alone in their crib to figure out how to self soothe。 It is not easy or comfortable to push, but sometimes its really necessary! The sleep wave worked pretty well with my daughter at 4。5 months, although we've had hiccups along the way and each night is different still。 I'm know what her "I'm hungry and/or something is wrong" cry sounds like so we don't mess around with the wave if she has a real need。 I started the wave when it seemed like rocking and soothing her to sleep in my arms just wasn't working very well and we stopped co-sleeping when she stopped being able to sleep next to me。 I imagine other children may not exhibit such clear signs and thats why families do all sorts of sleeping arrangements。 And。。。 i also wonder about parents who say this doesn't work at all, and their own attachment styles, childhood experiences, and ability to regulate difficult emotions。 Because even a supported CIO method like this would probably trigger the shit out of someone struggling with their own complex past and emotions。Overall, if a parent is serious about getting their kids sleep figured out and is committed to being an attuned parent, this is a great method to try。 。。。more

I've read a LOT of books about baby sleep because obviously after having a baby all you want to do is make sure your baby sleeps well。 This one was pretty good -- had a lot of overlapping principles with all of the rest of them。 I wouldn't consider it my "go to" resource of all the ones out there but I definitely did find it helpful。 I've read a LOT of books about baby sleep because obviously after having a baby all you want to do is make sure your baby sleeps well。 This one was pretty good -- had a lot of overlapping principles with all of the rest of them。 I wouldn't consider it my "go to" resource of all the ones out there but I definitely did find it helpful。 。。。more

I found it to be a very gentle method to help teach my babies how to sleep。 When used properly there is barely any crying involved。 Babies benefit from a lot of reassurance and presence of parents and it helped my babies sleep enormously。

This book helped me figure out how to put my little one for consistent naps throughout the day。 Turns out babies 0-4 months have a 90-minute wake window。 It wouldn't seem like he was sleepy, but sure enough he would be snoozing 15 minutes after a wind down。 We'll see how the next section of this book goes。 This book helped me figure out how to put my little one for consistent naps throughout the day。 Turns out babies 0-4 months have a 90-minute wake window。 It wouldn't seem like he was sleepy, but sure enough he would be snoozing 15 minutes after a wind down。 We'll see how the next section of this book goes。 。。。more

Some good stuff in here but the literature on controlled crying (which this absolutely is) is more divided than the book lets on

My daughter is only 2 months old, and most of the strategies described in this book are not intended for babies under about 4 months, so I expect I will be revisiting this book later。 After one read-through, my impression is that this book has a lot of useful information and tips, but is a little overly optimistic that every child can achieve good sleep habits relatively quickly and easily。 I would definitely recommend it as a reference book for looking up what the ideal sleep schedule and bedti My daughter is only 2 months old, and most of the strategies described in this book are not intended for babies under about 4 months, so I expect I will be revisiting this book later。 After one read-through, my impression is that this book has a lot of useful information and tips, but is a little overly optimistic that every child can achieve good sleep habits relatively quickly and easily。 I would definitely recommend it as a reference book for looking up what the ideal sleep schedule and bedtime routine is at any given age up to about 5 years, but it's maybe not so great for troubleshooting specific challenges。 Bonus points for the logical and convenient organization of information。 。。。more

No comment on the system, just that it was competently written。

Update: When I initially wrote my review I had only read the first part on babies from 0 to 4 months, which I still think is a 5-star part (including appendix)。 However I just read the next part (5 months to 2 years) and I got to say that I'm happy that we have an easy sleeper because I don't know if I would have the heart to try the things this books recommends。 It might actually work what's described, I just don't think it would fit with the way I want to go about parenting。 I lowered my ratin Update: When I initially wrote my review I had only read the first part on babies from 0 to 4 months, which I still think is a 5-star part (including appendix)。 However I just read the next part (5 months to 2 years) and I got to say that I'm happy that we have an easy sleeper because I don't know if I would have the heart to try the things this books recommends。 It might actually work what's described, I just don't think it would fit with the way I want to go about parenting。 I lowered my rating to 4。 Original review: I have a 5 week old son and before reading this book taking care of him seemed chaotic。 This book gave us a "plan of action" and my boy is much more chill thanks to it。 Knowing better what to do when has given me greater confidence as a care giver。 I also really like the general advice this book gives to take a curious stand as a parent。 。。。more

Absolutely necessary guide to parents whose baby has not learned to fall asleep on her own。 And who do not want their baby to cry。 You can criticise some of it but on the whole it is very helpful。

Bless this book and its “pop up sleep zone” idea of switching older kid out of their room to sleep in our room temporarily while putting the baby in the older kid’s room to get then used to sleeping in bedroom to be shared by the kids together ultimately。

I feel like this was marketed as an alternative to cry it out sleep training, but this is just cry it out but in 5 minute intervals re-marketed as "the wave"。 I feel like this was marketed as an alternative to cry it out sleep training, but this is just cry it out but in 5 minute intervals re-marketed as "the wave"。 。。。more

This book was recommended by a friend who is a Mom and a child therapist and I trusted she would have good advice and I am so grateful she recommended this book。 The strategy in this book worked really well for our baby and I like that the authors take a balanced view - hard to find in this day and age。 Our baby went from waking every 3 hours to sleeping through the night in a matter of days。 Life changing。 Hallelujah!! I got to be human again and he was a much happier baby too。 There’s so much This book was recommended by a friend who is a Mom and a child therapist and I trusted she would have good advice and I am so grateful she recommended this book。 The strategy in this book worked really well for our baby and I like that the authors take a balanced view - hard to find in this day and age。 Our baby went from waking every 3 hours to sleeping through the night in a matter of days。 Life changing。 Hallelujah!! I enjoyed it。 There was a lot of useful information, although I do think it tends toward the overly methodical。

Good mix of research, science and experiential advice, wish I had read this sleep book first!

This approach has worked well for us with our daughter so far。 I have reread parts as my daughter’s sleep has developed, and they are right on about what is going on with her sleep。 I kept this at four stars because I have only used it for one child, and I haven’t gotten to the age when my daughter is old enough for the sleep training approach。

This method worked like a charm for our daughter。 I started during month 5 and she's been sleeping 11+ hours every night since and takes great naps。 Highly recommend this gentle method。 It's all about consistency。 This method worked like a charm for our daughter。 I started during month 5 and she's been sleeping 11+ hours every night since and takes great naps。 Highly recommend this gentle method。 It's all about consistency。 。。。more

4。5 ⭐️ Great book to troubleshoot sleep issues with babies。 I would have wanted more examples on babies less than 6 months and the printables mentioned in the book are not available on their webpage。It’s easy to read and gives you great tips, would recommend it to new moms。

We found this to be a great method to get our little one to get himself to sleep。 Yes there are a few nights of protest。 Crying it out and it is horrible, but he was just protesting a change he didn't want, I think 3-4 days and he was out within the first 5 minute wave。 Now we pop him into bed and hes asleep in a few minutes, no rocking, shushing, singing required。 We are all sleeping really well。 We found this to be a great method to get our little one to get himself to sleep。 Yes there are a few nights of protest。 Crying it out and it is horrible, but he was just protesting a change he didn't want, I think 3-4 days and he was out within the first 5 minute wave。 Now we pop him into bed and hes asleep in a few minutes, no rocking, shushing, singing required。 We are all sleeping really well。 。。。more

Great ideas and very easy to pick and choose elements to add or change up in an existing routine。

Love the tone of this book - so reasonable and understanding of why parents default to sleep associations that are not great in the long-term。 Also love that they give a lot of thought to troubleshooting and different scenarios。 We haven’t tried the sleep wave yet - will try to remember to update this review after we do。 Cross your fingers for us。。。

Just Another CIO Book。 Picks and chooses the science to support another method that is just basically cry it out。 Not helpful to anyone trying to avoid torturing a small child at bedtime。

This book was incredibly helpful with our first born and is now my go-to reference book for my almost one month old second child。 A few of the most helpful tips in the newborn chapter are the 90 minute wake rule (babies are usually ready to go to sleep again after 90 minutes or less awake), the "magic" 7 pm bedtime, and white noise for sleep。 The later chapters (over 5 months) have a more gentle "cry it out" method that I preferred。 This book was incredibly helpful with our first born and is now my go-to reference book for my almost one month old second child。 A few of the most helpful tips in the newborn chapter are the 90 minute wake rule (babies are usually ready to go to sleep again after 90 minutes or less awake), the "magic" 7 pm bedtime, and white noise for sleep。 The later chapters (over 5 months) have a more gentle "cry it out" method that I preferred。 。。。more
