Summary

I had a lot of trouble getting into this book。 The story of a “marsh girl” abandoned at the age of 6, who raises herself, never gets sick (even steps on a rusty nail and doesn’t get tetanus), is hard to believe。 Her shack never needs repairs, she is taught by a boy to read and, on her own, learns college level subjects, and is beautiful, sensitive, and artistic。 All that was very hard to swallow。 That being said, the descriptions of the land and the marsh were beautiful, and I could envision how I had a lot of trouble getting into this book。 The story of a “marsh girl” abandoned at the age of 6, who raises herself, never gets sick (even steps on a rusty nail and doesn’t get tetanus), is hard to believe。 Her shack never needs repairs, she is taught by a boy to read and, on her own, learns college level subjects, and is beautiful, sensitive, and artistic。 All that was very hard to swallow。 That being said, the descriptions of the land and the marsh were beautiful, and I could envision how they all looked from the detailed narrative。 The murder mystery added a lot to the story; I had to keep reading to find out whodunnit。 Delia shifted seamlessly from the past to the present melding this murder mystery, love story and coming of age story into one。 。。。more

How do I sing high enough praises for this story?Take vivid descriptions of marshland so deep, they say something not just about the surroundings, but about the main character too。 Add mouth watering descriptions of the southern comfort foods my dad often made growing up, and a string of many loves, both platonic and romantic, gently ripping your heart in two, and mending it back together again。 Then sprinkle in poetry with multiple faces, and a murder mystery with more twists and turns than the How do I sing high enough praises for this story?Take vivid descriptions of marshland so deep, they say something not just about the surroundings, but about the main character too。 Add mouth watering descriptions of the southern comfort foods my dad often made growing up, and a string of many loves, both platonic and romantic, gently ripping your heart in two, and mending it back together again。 Then sprinkle in poetry with multiple faces, and a murder mystery with more twists and turns than the watery channels of the marsh itself。Take all of that, and you still don’t even have half the book。 Perfectly paced and immaculately woven, this story will play your emotions like a violin, and satisfy every craving you’ve ever had for a book about life in a swamp。 Oh, you’ve never had one of those? Well consider this your call to crave, and enjoy the adventures of the marsh girl。 。。。more

Very slow for the first 300 pages, I would of given up but I wanted to find out why it is so talked about with so many good reviews。 Beautifully written for the description and I did feel like I knew Kya and her environment but that can’t take away from the fact the first 4/5 of the book felt like a drag。 I don’t understand all the hype around this book。

Absolutely beautiful writing for 90% of the book but strangely the last 10% seemed to just skim over important details without the same familiar languid language and the ending was a bit of a let down。

It's a book with a strong sense of place and lovely descriptions, which were enough to push me to go to three stars on this。 The problem was I couldn't suspend disbelief about the plot or the main character enough to get into the story。 Perhaps I'd prefer the author's non-fiction works。 It's a book with a strong sense of place and lovely descriptions, which were enough to push me to go to three stars on this。 The problem was I couldn't suspend disbelief about the plot or the main character enough to get into the story。 Perhaps I'd prefer the author's non-fiction works。 。。。more

I liked Kya as a character - a little naive but resilient and it's heartbreaking that she was left alone but it's a triumph that she survived。 (I know I would have cried a lot more than she was shown to) I love that she was able to build a way of life, despite having the prejudices of her town against her。 Jumpin and Mable were wonderful and I'm glad that they had their little family together。 Also, I loved the reconciliation between her and Jodie; I'm glad she was able to have that connection a I liked Kya as a character - a little naive but resilient and it's heartbreaking that she was left alone but it's a triumph that she survived。 (I know I would have cried a lot more than she was shown to) I love that she was able to build a way of life, despite having the prejudices of her town against her。 Jumpin and Mable were wonderful and I'm glad that they had their little family together。 Also, I loved the reconciliation between her and Jodie; I'm glad she was able to have that connection at least。 What gets me though is that her other siblings straight dipped and never returned - that's messed up。 I understand the circumstances but they really didn't even try to send a letter。 Damn。I loved that Tate loved her。 He did a messed up thing, but I'm glad he came back and apologized and that she forgave him。 Was I surprised by Chase's character? No。 I knew he'd be garbage from the first introduction and I'm not upset about what happened either。 I knew he was gonna pull something sleazy - I felt it - I'm only surprised it took that long for his true colors to show。I think it was a nice book and I wonder how it would have been if I read it instead of listening to the audiobook, but the reader did a wonderful job with the accents and tone changes! 。。。more

Such a slow book at the beginning。 Felt like it took until page 200 for the story to really start。 Slightly predictable at times? Overall, good read, but did not live up to the hype for me。

Quite lovely。 Touches on numerous social issues without being too heavy handed。 I wasn't sure if I would enjoy more than the imagery early on, but the ending was satisfying。 Quite lovely。 Touches on numerous social issues without being too heavy handed。 I wasn't sure if I would enjoy more than the imagery early on, but the ending was satisfying。 。。。more

Set in 1952, Kya is poor and has a very dysfunctional family。 They live on the outskirts of town near a swamp。 Her momma leaves, and most all her siblings as well, and her daddy basically abandons her to take care of herself。 And Kya does! This story tells the life and triumphs of a girl who overcomes a lot to become a strong, smart, and captivating person。 But the plot thickens。 There is a murder to investigate and can Kya have something to do with it? Can't believe I waited so long to read this sensational novel。 Pulls at the heartstrings and reveals so many fascinating things about the animal kingdom。 Owens' descriptions of male mammalian behavior intended to attract females has changed the way I look at men forever。What a writer。 The back and forth timeline worked well。 Highly recommended!!
