Summary

This was nice。 Had some nice little tidbits of inspiration, and lots of quotable things。 Ultimately it was just way too short。 I also listened to the audio version, if that makes a difference? But yeah, REALLY short。

The problem about self help books is that they make you feel energised for some time immediately after reading them but leaves very small substance for the long run。 Hence my distaste in this genre。 This book is okay- I'll say, but certainly not that life changing (to me)。There are a few tips that might work, I'll give some try。 Small book, takes very short time to read。 Not recommended if you are not in a reader's block。 The problem about self help books is that they make you feel energised for some time immediately after reading them but leaves very small substance for the long run。 Hence my distaste in this genre。 This book is okay- I'll say, but certainly not that life changing (to me)。There are a few tips that might work, I'll give some try。 Small book, takes very short time to read。 Not recommended if you are not in a reader's block。 。。。more

I literally read (ok skimmed) this book in less than 15 minutes and I feel like it was just a bunch of aphorisms and cliches about how we should be creative and follow our passions, but there was hardly any substance to any of the advice。 Was it worth my 15 minutes? No。 Maybe it would have been worth 7。

An awesome book about being creative!! Some lesson I learn from this book:1。 Every new idea is just a mashup or a remix of one or more previous ideas。2。 "Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination。"3。 Carry a notebook and a pen with you whenever you go。 Get used to pulling it out and jotting down your thoughts and observations。4。 Creative work is a kind of theater。 The stage is your studio, your desk, or your workstation。5。 "Start copying what you love。 Copy co An awesome book about being creative!! So, for the first。。。 30% of the book, I was bored。 I felt cheated: this is not the kind of book I thought it was。 To me, it's a collection of inspirational Tweets。 It wasn't until I put the book down and resumed it after 2 or so weeks that some of the inspiration kind of stuck。 It's not a bad book, my expectations just ruined it。 I'd consider purchasing a physical copy of this for a coffee table。 So, for the first。。。 30% of the book, I was bored。 I felt cheated: this is not the kind of book I thought it was。 To me, it's a collection of inspirational Tweets。 It wasn't until I put the book down and resumed it after 2 or so weeks that some of the inspiration kind of stuck。 It's not a bad book, my expectations just ruined it。 I'd consider purchasing a physical copy of this for a coffee table。 。。。more

The things I learned from this book1。 To have paper, pen on me all the time, to the extent that you may fill your pockets with scraps of paper and pen always。 (Good idea, as I have pockets in all my pants!)2。 No work is original, all are an amalgamation of things copies from others with our very own sprinkle of dust added to it。 So, don’t worry, start copying。 It is like the advice that all first drafts are rough drafts, don’t edit, just keeping writing the shit which can be fine tuned later。 3。 The things I learned from this book1。 To have paper, pen on me all the time, to the extent that you may fill your pockets with scraps of paper and pen always。 (Good idea, as I have pockets in all my pants!)2。 No work is original, all are an amalgamation of things copies from others with our very own sprinkle of dust added to it。 So, don’t worry, start copying。 It is like the advice that all first drafts are rough drafts, don’t edit, just keeping writing the shit which can be fine tuned later。 3。 To step away from screen and do work with our hands first! Sitting infront of a computer is dull!It involves just two senses eyes and touch on keyboard。。。 Try to involve all senses and essentially keep MOVING! Doing physical work is essential to keep our minds sharp - so go wash your clothes, do the dishes, cook, clean the room, get hands on paper and scribble away or doodle or do whatever you want!4。 Hold onto your hobbies don’t let them slip away。5。 Make your own world。 Do good stuff and share with people。 6。 Make friends7。 Get angry, but shut your mouth/keep your hands away from typing retaliation tweets and go do something about it8。 Don’t look for validation from outside sources。 You only get criticisms and complaints。 The only way to keep yourself occupied is being too busy with work to care about these stuff。9。 Keep a praise file10。 We are here for a while, so take care of yourselves while you are here (Go to the dentist, sleep for 7-8 hours, eat breakfast, drink coffee, brush before bed, do your workouts/ daily play-time)DO the boring basics right!Things to keep on yourselfPaperPenNotebookCalendarPraise fileLogbook Note: This is not a conventional book。 Keeping this book and coming back to it when you face a slump - it’s a care package to keep you going on difficult days creatively。 。。。more

My main reason for cutting the book down to 3 stars is that of the ten pieces of advice, only about four are new to me。 For example, the chapter that explains one should be good with one's money is obvious。 However, the concept that most art is an amalgamation of different artists is eye-opening。 I like the idea that if you're "stealing" from one artist, it is considered plagiarism, but if you take inspiration from 100 artists, it is considered research。Overall, I recommend this book。 Another sh My main reason for cutting the book down to 3 stars is that of the ten pieces of advice, only about four are new to me。 For example, the chapter that explains one should be good with one's money is obvious。 However, the concept that most art is an amalgamation of different artists is eye-opening。 I like the idea that if you're "stealing" from one artist, it is considered plagiarism, but if you take inspiration from 100 artists, it is considered research。Overall, I recommend this book。 Another short read from Austin Kleon packs details that can help upcoming artists for inspiration。 。。。more

What a delightful read- just what I needed on a gloomy day! There is something so magical about Austin's authenticity and artistic nature。 A swell book for artists who have a propensity to using their hands and doing traditional work。 Kleon's books are so lovely, I wish he wrote many more, I just read two of his books within 2 hours and I am probably having the most self-confident artist day in a long time。 I would totally recommend this book to an artist friend who is caught up in the drudges o What a delightful read- just what I needed on a gloomy day! 。。。more
