Summary

Sophia was made for him。 Her perfect husband。 She can feel it in her bones。 He is perfect。 Their home together in Arcadia Gardens is perfect。 Everything is perfect。

It's just that he's away so much。 So often。 He works so hard。 She misses him。 And he misses her。 He says he does, so it must be true。 He is the perfect husband and everything is perfect。

But sometimes Sophia wonders about things。 Strange things。 Dark things。 The look on her husband's face when he comes back from a long business trip。 The questions he will not answer。 The locked basement she is never allowed to enter。 And whenever she asks the neighbors, they can't quite meet her gaze。。。

But everything is perfect。 Isn't it?

Eerily satisfyingI thought this was one of the strangest books I have read in quite some time。 It goes down this path where you, the reader can't help。but think the husband is cheating or a killer。Nope。 Dead wrong。 Then you think maybe he's a giant 。 nope。 Wrong again。Just read it。 Its quite entertaining。 Eerily satisfyingI thought this was one of the strangest books I have read in quite some time。 It goes down this path where you, the reader can't help。but think the husband is cheating or a killer。Nope。 Dead wrong。 Then you think maybe he's a giant 。 nope。 Wrong again。Just read it。 Its quite entertaining。 。。。more

Another highly anticipated release for me! I love a book that lures me in with little information and keeps me questioning what’s actually going on until the very end。 The writing in this story is incredibly beautiful and almost lyrical like。 It felt like I was reading an extremely captivating poem of sorts。 The plot of this story is so intricate and every little detail had a meaning。 I might not have connected everything until after completely finishing, but it made me appreciate the small thin Another highly anticipated release for me! My first read of the year。 I love a short horror to start off the year。 This was unsettling and I thought it was beautifully written。 Religious themes are not always my favorites especially in horror but I overall enjoyed this one a lot!!

4。5/5 stars。 This is one of those books that is best read by going into it completely blind and getting swept up in the lyrical writing before you finally realize, oh fuck, that's where the plot is going。 4。5/5 stars。 This is one of those books that is best read by going into it completely blind and getting swept up in the lyrical writing before you finally realize, oh fuck, that's where the plot is going。 。。。more

3。5/5*figured out what this was all about a few chapters in, and while it was fun to catch the hints behind the little details throughout, I still feel I would've loved it more if it was ambiguously spooky, twisted and just whimsical like that going along with the writing。 still a fun read though。 3。5/5*figured out what this was all about a few chapters in, and while it was fun to catch the hints behind the little details throughout, I still feel I would've loved it more if it was ambiguously spooky, twisted and just whimsical like that going along with the writing。 still a fun read though。 。。。more

It’s way too easy to figure out way too soon exactly where this novella is going。 Why do we need so many retellings of this same story?

Caroline Lafrance

Extremely quick read。 Not for me。 It started off well but then it just got way to weird for my taste!

3。5 stars。 First book of the year。Quick read。 Super bizarre! One of the weirdest books I've read in a while。 Enjoyed it but was lost about what's happening for the first two thirds of the book。 Personally didn't find it scary, just slightly unsettling。 I didn't mind that as I don't really read much horror but if you're looking for a suspenseful horror/thriller then this probably isn't the book for you。 Loved the writing style and the descriptions。 Overall stunning prose! The book was super visual and I think it would make a fantastic movie if it's ever adapted。 (view spoiler)[ The animal/people names bit was clever, but once I caught on to the fact that they were most definitely actual animals when Sophia presented them with the gifts it became a little silly。 Mixed feelings on the Adam/Eve thing。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

Everything is perfector?I loved the subtle creeping feeling in this。 The picture slowly showing it's cracks。 I'm a big fan of Bluebeard retellings, yet wasn't expecting this。 Excellent! The last book of the year left me absolutely puzzled。 This is nonsensical at times but positively charming throughout。 The characters are so elegant。 Sophia, our leading girl, is so loveable。 Her husband, so manipulative。 The great revelation - horror inducing and infuriating。 But the ending, ohhh, the ending! Sweet comeuppance!

3。5 。 The storyline is unique but I wish there was more done with it。

Intriguing。。。

Dominique

Beautiful prose wasted on a disjointed, bizarre plot and an incredibly basic, uninspired theme we’ve all read before, which was only revealed in an end-of-book info dump。

Penny Ramirez

Deeply unsettling, and yet beautifully written。

Daisy

Oooh this one was good。 Short and compelling, but I wouldn’t call this horror - hell, I wasn’t even unsettled。 But it was beautifully written and I just wanted to know more of what was going on。 Definitely unexpected!

Catherynne Valente is a master of her craft and has a distinct voice that has been carefully directed here to tell this particular little tale。 It's a perfect voice to take us into this world that is lush and decadent but simultaneously barren and unsettling。 To say much about the plot or the characters is to give the game away, but not to worry—this book is so short you can simply carve out a few hours, slice up an apple and some sharp cheddar cheese for a snack, and settle in。 I don't totally Catherynne Valente is a master of her craft and has a distinct voice that has been carefully directed here to tell this particular little tale。 It's a perfect voice to take us into this world that is lush and decadent but simultaneously barren and unsettling。 To say much about the plot or the characters is to give the game away, but not to worry—this book is so short you can simply carve out a few hours, slice up an apple and some sharp cheddar cheese for a snack, and settle in。 I don't totally agree with the categorizations of "horror" and "thriller" here, though there is gore and mystery。 It's more for those readers who wish The Stepford Wives had been written by Angela Carter。 Many thanks to the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

What a strange and very well written book。 I recommend going in completely blind to this one。

Didn't see the twist coming, that's for sure。 I feel like this contained some commentary on the Christian creation myth, but I think I missed it, somehow。 Didn't see the twist coming, that's for sure。 I feel like this contained some commentary on the Christian creation myth, but I think I missed it, somehow。 。。。more

Strange and short novel。 Sophia has this perfect life and everyone in her perfect little town asks her if she is happy。 Everyday they ask。 Soon she realizes she is not。

Wow。 What a surprise this little book turned out to be。 My mind kept racing, trying to figure out where the plot was going and when it hit, I did not see it coming。 That was definitely an interesting twist。

The major tone of this is the same as in The Stepford Wives。 Creepy, eerie, and mysterious。 It was certainly a page turner, and had me curious about the ending。 It also did all of this in under 200 pages, and left me impressed with the creativity of the author, though I did find it to be quite a bit too sacrilegious for books that I enjoy, and I didn’t like the biblical language that was used and twisted into the narrative。 I understand that this was written as fiction, but I was still left unco The major tone of this is the same as in The Stepford Wives。 Creepy, eerie, and mysterious。 It was certainly a page turner, and had me curious about the ending。 It also did all of this in under 200 pages, and left me impressed with the creativity of the author, though I did find it to be quite a bit too sacrilegious for books that I enjoy, and I didn’t like the biblical language that was used and twisted into the narrative。 I understand that this was written as fiction, but I was still left uncomfortable by it as a christian。 If you aren’t, you will probably not have a problem with it。 I’m not sure what I was expecting from a title like “comfort me with apples” but I didn’t think the twisted language would bother me as much as it did。 。。。more

2。5/5It's my final book of the year。 It was okay。 Not too good, but still interesting。It's kinda clever, it took me a while to figure out what it was trying to mimic (won't spoil it here, I had fun guessing)。In conclusion, women deserve better。 2。5/5It's my final book of the year。 It was okay。 Not too good, but still interesting。It's kinda clever, it took me a while to figure out what it was trying to mimic (won't spoil it here, I had fun guessing)。In conclusion, women deserve better。 。。。more

3。5 Stars。 This was a very interesting short read。 It reminded me a lot of the movie Mother with Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem。 The prose was great and the writing was well executed in my opinion。 The only real negative for me was the plotline/ending wasn't entirely a surprise to me throughout。 3。5 Stars。 This was a very interesting short read。 It reminded me a lot of the movie Mother with Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem。 The prose was great and the writing was well executed in my opinion。 The only real negative for me was the plotline/ending wasn't entirely a surprise to me throughout。 。。。more

Wow。 I knew the main twist/reveal (but not the secondary reveal) before going in and honestly I think that really helped me to stick with it, kept my intrigue high。 Because it is an odd narrative choice and I think I might have noped out without that that spoiler knowledge。 But wow did it pay off。 What a book to start the new year with。If you like the classic feminist non-fiction "chalice and the blade" or "who cooked the last supper" then this is the fiction for you。 Wow。 I knew the main twist/reveal (but not the secondary reveal) before going in and honestly I think that really helped me to stick with it, kept my intrigue high。 Because it is an odd narrative choice and I think I might have noped out without that that spoiler knowledge。 But wow did it pay off。 What a book to start the new year with。If you like the classic feminist non-fiction "chalice and the blade" or "who cooked the last supper" then this is the fiction for you。 。。。more

I was hoping to end the year with a banger and I sure did。 This book remind me a lot of the movie (view spoiler)[ Mother!, in both its themes and the ciclical nature of it, although Mother! doesn't straight up tell you it's an allegory for the bible but undoubtly is (hide spoiler)], which I really really like but a lot of people hate, and I think it's the same with this little book。 Not only is the cover stunning, but the prose is also very captivating and succeeds in keeping you hooked。 It's v I was hoping to end the year with a banger and I sure did。 This book remind me a lot of the movie (view spoiler)[ Mother!, in both its themes and the ciclical nature of it, although Mother! doesn't straight up tell you it's an allegory for the bible but undoubtly is (hide spoiler)], which I really really like but a lot of people hate, and I think it's the same with this little book。 Not only is the cover stunning, but the prose is also very captivating and succeeds in keeping you hooked。 It's very fun to pick up the clues along the way ((view spoiler)[ the animal surnames, for instance (hide spoiler)]) and connect the dots as the story develops。It's an odd little book with a strange plot and interesting allegory。 I reject the idea that a book needs to have a clear message behind it in order to be enjoyed - there's certainly a lot of themes and conversations to explore, but it doesn't need to be what defines the story。 If you pick up this book accept it for what it is and allow yourself to be carried and emerged in the mystical, strange elements of the story and hopefully you'll have a good time! 。。。more

The book was a little too short, but I could absolutely see it fleshed out as a film。 I was so eager to decipher the “twist” and I don’t know what I had made up in my head but it certainly was not what the plot was。 I was pleasantly surprised!
