A great and easy to understand overview of human history, with a lot of focus on the context of major historical events, like changes in society and events preceding it。 I learned about new events I hadn't really learned about before, but more than that, the book made me understand how different historical events were connected, how they influenced the world afterwards, and why they're still relevant today。 I'd also like to mention that this book does not make the mistake of focusing too central A great and easy to understand overview of human history, with a lot of focus on the context of major historical events, like changes in society and events preceding it。 I learned about new events I hadn't really learned about before, but more than that, the book made me understand how different historical events were connected, how they influenced the world afterwards, and why they're still relevant today。 I'd also like to mention that this book does not make the mistake of focusing too centrally on European history but history from all over the world (there are areas favoured a bit more by the book, but I figure that has to do with a lack of historical records in the first place for one reason or another)。I really enjoyed reading this and generally found it a really light read in terms of focus and language, I pretty much flew through the pages。 A huge recommend for anyone looking for a start into the topic of history。 。。。more

A must-have world history bookAny person who wants to know the world history must read this。 It succeeds in achieving its goal in the book title。 It succinctly tells what we human beings have done throughout their time, across various places on the globe。You can even get more, if you read it along with a timetable of history (I have a book like this), or prepare your own one when reading it (which is what I did)。 You can visualise more on what really happened across the world at any point of his A must-have world history bookAny person who wants to know the world history must read this。 It succeeds in achieving its goal in the book title。 It succinctly tells what we human beings have done throughout their time, across various places on the globe。You can even get more, if you read it along with a timetable of history (I have a book like this), or prepare your own one when reading it (which is what I did)。 You can visualise more on what really happened across the world at any point of history, and it’s subsequent impact。 。。。more

"The History Book Big Ideas Simply Explained" does what it says on the cover。 History to me has always been names and dates。 A problem arises when you realize that other people were there too, in the background。 For example, you might know about the Battle of Hastings in 1066, but how did it affect the people living in the area? What about other countries and their histories and cultures? The book covers a wide swath of history。 It goes by approximate dates and then moves on to precise dates。 Con "The History Book Big Ideas Simply Explained" does what it says on the cover。 History to me has always been names and dates。 A problem arises when you realize that other people were there too, in the background。 For example, you might know about the Battle of Hastings in 1066, but how did it affect the people living in the area? What about other countries and their histories and cultures? The book covers a wide swath of history。 It goes by approximate dates and then moves on to precise dates。 Contained within these pages are the rise and fall of several empires。 Some events are beyond our current ability to discover。 For example, we know some things about the Minoan civilization, but we still know next to nothing of their writing script。The book covers up to 2011。 The last event is the population surpassing 7 billion people。 It stops going chronologically in the Modern Era section。 It jumps to and fro from events like the First Webpage in 1991 and the 9/11 Attacks in 2001。 It probably went by countries, and I didn't notice。The History Book is excellent for several reasons。 Firstly, it talks about countries with which I was not familiar。 Secondly, it has tons of images and graphs to demonstrate the ideas。 Finally, the book is portioned out in easily digestible chunks。 。。。more

Bigotry and prejudice against Christianity is pervasive throughout the book。 It is too bad the writers could not have presented history without Christian bashing。 They seemingly are ignorant of Humes error。

I won’t get deeply into the misinformation provided regarding Jewish history, as I saw another well-informed party do so。 I also saw another (a priest) confused by how they got basics of the Protestant vs。 Catholic rivalry wrong, wanting to know if this is true about other fields of the book, because if so, how can we trust any of the material? Being that History is a factual subject! I highly agree, and sadly I can confirm that facts are misrepresented。 I just want to mention the one though。 T I won’t get deeply into the misinformation provided regarding Jewish history, as I saw another well-informed party do so。 I also saw another (a priest) confused by how they got basics of the Protestant vs。 Catholic rivalry wrong, wanting to know if this is true about other fields of the book, because if so, how can we trust any of the material? Being that History is a factual subject! I highly agree, and sadly I can confirm that facts are misrepresented。 I just want to mention the one though。 They assert that Chizkiya the king of Judah repelled a gargantuan force of Assyrians outside his gates through (what we believe to be) divine assistance。 This is true。 But They then go on to presumptuously claim that this incited Judaism to get on board the Monotheism train。 Is that a joke?Any amateur student of history will tell you Judaism was the first Monotheistic religion, inspiring Christianty eras later and even farther along, Islam。 A cursory, and I mean a first-grade-level glance at the canonized bible will tell you that we became a monotheistic nation in the time of Abraham。 Eras before Chizkiyahu。 Abraham was the first to enter the land of Israel, the progenitor of the Jewish people and Monotheism, and was the precursor for the subsequent sovereign nation to be。 Chizkayhu was almost at the end of a long line of Judean kings long after Abraham came。 Long after Isaac, Jacob, the twelve sons, their exile in Egypt, their delivery with Moses, their survival in the desert, their manifested reception of the torah, their conquest of the barbaric nations that dwelled in Israel, their establishment of rulership with Saul, David, etc。 following many kings until Chizkiya long down the chain。 A kindegartner could tell you Chizkiya didn’t promulgate Judean views on Monotheism。 That’s like saying Mike Tyson spread boxing。 Really?Besides for this gross oversight, I don’t want to be one who harps on the bad and ignores all the good。 They did a tremendous effort in compiling this difficult work and credit is due。 They gave voice to many voiceless and showed immorality in a way that tried to stay sidelined from preaching to any specific choir。 Were there things they overlooked? Definitely。 But that was bound to happen。 This isn’t an exhaustive work, it’s a skeleton with a good deal of flesh。 It traces a good line through history to understand the causes and effects and progressions。 Credit is definitely due。Despite the fact that other things especially in the Jewish department were overlooked, I think they did a solid job of not marginalizing us, and including some of the many times we were oppressed。 Thank you for not leaving it all out, as many do。 There were some questionable herzl, palestinian, and other Jewish/Israel questionable historical accuracies, but I don’t want to nitpick and I don’t think they amount to the mistake listed above。 And they were countered by the solid amount of correct information。 They tried hard and I give credit。One other complaint needs echoing though。 I thought the syntax was poor。 We’re dealing with history, so brevity can come at the expense of clarity。 The book can sound like disorganized and non-linear bullet points at times; the reader forgetting where we are exactly in history, who’s who, what means what, etc。 This composition style is hard enough on its own, but couple it with poor syntax and it just leads to much ambiguity。 More like 2。8 on this one。 。。。more

I love the book and was a fun read for me。 I like how simplified it was written but maybe not good for someone who wants to go in details in learning History。 I just think of this book as an outline of learning History。 which I think might be the purpose of this compact book。

These books are great。 I love learning about history's "greatest hits"。 Obviously it's you can't include everything, so one could quibble about that。 It's overwhelmingly about Europe, a fair amount of Asia。 Africa was barely mentioned。 South America didn't get much attention。 So, you would need to read many volumes to get everything, but for an overview of history, I really enjoyed it。 I also like the format, illustrations and photography, and sidebars that highlight certain people and such。 These books are great。 I love learning about history's "greatest hits"。 Obviously it's you can't include everything, so one could quibble about that。 It's overwhelmingly about Europe, a fair amount of Asia。 Africa was barely mentioned。 South America didn't get much attention。 So, you would need to read many volumes to get everything, but for an overview of history, I really enjoyed it。 I also like the format, illustrations and photography, and sidebars that highlight certain people and such。 。。。more
