Summary

Two hundred years before the events of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, in the era of the glorious High Republic, the noble and wise Jedi Knights must face a frightening threat to themselves, the galaxy, and the Force itself。。。。

From Book Sleeve:
It is a golden age。 Intrepid hyperspace scouts expand the reach of the Republic to the farthest stars, worlds flourish under the benevolent leadership of the Senate, and peace reigns, enforced by the wisdom and strength of the renowned order of Force users known as the Jedi。 With the Jedi at the height of their power, the free citizens of the galaxy are confident in their ability to weather any storm。 But even the brightest light can cast a shadow, and some storms defy any preparation。

When a shocking catastrophe in hyperspace tears a ship to pieces, the flurry of shrapnel emerging from the disaster threatens an entire system。 No sooner does the call for help go out than the Jedi race to the scene。 The scope of the emergence, however, is enough to push even Jedi to their limit。 As the sky breaks open and destruction rains down upon the peaceful alliance they helped to build, the Jedi must trust in the Force to see them through a day in which a single mistake could cost billions of lives。

Even as the Jedi battle valiantly against calamity, something truly deadly grows beyond the boundary of the Republic。 The hyperspace disaster is far more sinister than the Jedi could ever suspect。 A threat hides in the darkness, far from the light of the age, and harbors a secret that could strike fear into even a Jedi's heart。

Light of the Jedi serves as an interesting, but often overwhelming, introduction to the High Republic era of Star Wars。 A long time ago is now even longer ago and Soule has a lot of world-building to cover。 The problem is that he stretches the story too thin by trying to cover too much。 Many, many characters are introduced。 Many locations are visited。 Many relationships are established。 None of them get enough time individually for the reader to differentiate between them in the beginning。 Once Light of the Jedi serves as an interesting, but often overwhelming, introduction to the High Republic era of Star Wars。 A long time ago is now even longer ago and Soule has a lot of world-building to cover。 The problem is that he stretches the story too thin by trying to cover too much。 Many, many characters are introduced。 Many locations are visited。 Many relationships are established。 None of them get enough time individually for the reader to differentiate between them in the beginning。 Once the initial disaster abates, about a third of the way in, you start to get your feet under you concerning who’s who。 It’s at this point that the novel shifts to feature our villains and the problem begins anew。 The final third of the book was much more enjoyable。 I had a grasp on at least the main characters on all sides and the conflict of the novel was driving toward conclusion。 The finale left me with many questions and a thirst for more so in the end it accomplished its mission: I’ve preordered the next book in the series。Pros:+ Interesting villains。 Not your typical Star Wars enemies。 Lots of mystery to unpack。 + Good Jedi characters (there are just a lot of them)。 Thought was given to the way each one touches the force and it’s fun to explore that。+ Pretty strong finish。 Nothing is more disappointing than reading a good story with an awful ending。 I can tolerate an average story with a good ending like this though。 Cons:- Too many characters。 Most were great, but we didn’t need them all in the first book。- The pacing。 You can’t have all action all the time, but the parts not spent in conflict seemed to drag。 - The “love” story。 Soule makes fun of a character early in the novel for reading a trashy romance story。。。 and then he included one of his own。 It’s minor, more a seed to plant in the reader’s head than an actual plot line, but it was so poorly written that it stuck out like a lightsaber。 Leave the furtive glances between star crossed lovers in the YA gulag where they belong。 Yuck。Summary: Given that this book is the springboard for a huge new era in Star Wars storytelling, I can forgive its shortcomings and try to enjoy it for its strength: good characters that lay the foundation for future stories in this new Star Wars past。 But the novel suffers for having too many of those great characters and not having enough time to attach to more than a couple of them。 Combine that with the disjointed pacing and this novel is solidly average。 Cavan Scott has a lot of room for improvement in the next installment due in June。3/5 。。。more

okay it definitely got better and now I definitely need MORE。 thank goodness they’re making a whole franchise from this time period of the high republic。 I felt like I just got attached to all of the characters and then boom it was over。 it was a fabulous intro to some amazing characters who I hope to see on disney plus or on the big screen one day。 the light of the jedi is the birth of the republic and the darkness and fear that drove the dark side。 if you’re into star wars history, definitely okay it definitely got better and now I definitely need MORE。 thank goodness they’re making a whole franchise from this time period of the high republic。 I felt like I just got attached to all of the characters and then boom it was over。 it was a fabulous intro to some amazing characters who I hope to see on disney plus or on the big screen one day。 the light of the jedi is the birth of the republic and the darkness and fear that drove the dark side。 if you’re into star wars history, definitely give this one a go。 4。5/5 stars :’) 。。。more

Strong and interesting entry to a brand new Era of Star Wars。 I venture to say this is likely the story Disney should have led with instead of the Sequel Trilogy。

Excellent book。 A fresh new take on the Star Wars setting。 The Nahil are a new villain lead by Marchian Ro are the forces of chaos that will threaten the Republic and the Jedi and they are very familiar if you are paying attention to the world today。 The Jedi are in their prime and they are amazing。 This is a fun book and very much Star Wars。 We are all the Republic!

This is a really interesting introduction to the High Republic Era of Star Wars。 I enjoyed the characters and plot of the book and I feel like it did a good job of telling a story while also leaving enough open ended so that it can be explored in future projects。

Definitely one of the best Star Wars novels。I love how we actually get introduced to the villain like in the 100th page, how Charles Soule starts giving you details about the events each chapter。 As a Star Wars fan who doesn't really like the things Disney's done with this universe, I can say this book is (by a lot) the best Star Wars content we've got since Episode 3 went out, maybe from exception of the last Clone Wars' season。I also like how we have lots of references and we get characters at Definitely one of the best Star Wars novels。I love how we actually get introduced to the villain like in the 100th page, how Charles Soule starts giving you details about the events each chapter。 As a Star Wars fan who doesn't really like the things Disney's done with this universe, I can say this book is (by a lot) the best Star Wars content we've got since Episode 3 went out, maybe from exception of the last Clone Wars' season。I also like how we have lots of references and we get characters at least I, never expected。 This is a very different thing from the typical Star Wars movies but, awesome! 。。。more

So excited for this but ended up being so disappointed。First third of the book feels more like a Star Trek adventure and separate from the rest of the book。 Too many characters for me and because of that I don't feel like I knew any of them。 In the end, it didn't use the "Star Wars" universe enough besides mentioning the force or a lightsaber。 It didn't bring anything new for me to explore。 So excited for this but ended up being so disappointed。First third of the book feels more like a Star Trek adventure and separate from the rest of the book。 Too many characters for me and because of that I don't feel like I knew any of them。 In the end, it didn't use the "Star Wars" universe enough besides mentioning the force or a lightsaber。 It didn't bring anything new for me to explore。 。。。more

joss adren calling the jedi “space wizards” throughout the entire novel is the only thing giving me serotonin。 that and this novel confirmed that jedi erotica fanfic exists in the star wars universe。 avar kriss is perfect in every way and ngl i’m a fan of whatever she has going on with elzar mann。 the nihil are chaotic and violent and i love them。

I'm always game for a good Star Wars stories。 Admittedly, Lucasfilm has had some story stumbles—The Last Jedi, The Rise of Skywalker—but they have also had some enormous successes—Rogue One, Rebels, and The Mandalorian。 The High Republic represents a much needed step away from the Skywalker saga and the narrative timeline that has anchored most Star Wars stories to this point。 After all, there is a massive universe out there to be explored, and I was genuinely excited to go back in time (a littl I'm always game for a good Star Wars stories。 Admittedly, Lucasfilm has had some story stumbles—The Last Jedi, The Rise of Skywalker—but they have also had some enormous successes—Rogue One, Rebels, and The Mandalorian。 The High Republic represents a much needed step away from the Skywalker saga and the narrative timeline that has anchored most Star Wars stories to this point。 After all, there is a massive universe out there to be explored, and I was genuinely excited to go back in time (a little longer ago than the stories we know so well) and see what else could be seen。My first disappointment with the book is the familiarity I felt for the Jedi characters。 However, after reflecting on the timeline, I realized two-hundred years is a long time, but it's not that long。 So, why should the Jedi look completely different than what we've seen in The Clone Wars, which is probably the most similar story we have to The High Republic。 Should the storytellers have gone back even further in the timeline? I think so。 Yet, I think they did an admirable job in making the story feel unique; albeit, I'm afraid by the end of The High Republic series, whenever that might be, the narrative will be forced to attach itself to the Skywalker saga we know so well—especially the nascent rise of Palpatine。 I hope not, but I think it's probably inevitable。The two aspects of this story I did really enjoy were the villains—the perfectly named Nihil—and the exploration of hyperspace。 The Nihil (as in nihilist—get it?) are great foils for the Jedi。 As guardians of not only peace but order throughout the galaxy, what could be a better villain for the Jedi than a group of loosely loyal vagabonds who indiscriminately pillage and destroy? The opening incident in The High Republic is one of the best I have read in a while—immediately engaging and gripping; however, it drags on for far, far too long。 Having said that, the Nihil continue to pose a consistently interesting threat, and I think it can be really entertaining to see where the storytellers go from here。As mentioned, the exploration of hyperspace, an aspect of Star Wars lore taken totally for granted throughout all of the narratives, is possibly The High Republic's most promising element。 Being a prequel, it's a little disappointing knowing the revelations about hyperspace—whatever they might be—probably won't have much impact outside of this series。 Yet, I'm intrigued nonetheless, and I think there are some good characters connected to the mystery who deserve some development。The High Republic is good。 It's not a canon-shattering story and certainly doesn't strive to be。 It plays it a bit safe, but I was nonetheless entertained。 I think there is some room for this series to breath and expand。 There are characters worth spending more time with, and I'm invested in this new series。 Let's see where they take us from here 。 。 。https://thethousanderclub。blogspot。com/ 。。。more

I wasn't quite sure what to expect from the new The High Republic books as the synopsis is a bit vague and it's been a while since I read a Star Wars book that wasn't centered around a character I was already familiar。 Light of the Jedi starts off with a ton of action, which is one of my favorite things a book can do。 There are a truly astounding number of POVs and this does a great job of making a big, stressful conflict seem even more engrossing。 My struggle with this book was largely due to t I wasn't quite sure what to expect from the new The High Republic books as the synopsis is a bit vague and it's been a while since I read a Star Wars book that wasn't centered around a character I was already familiar。 Light of the Jedi starts off with a ton of action, which is one of my favorite things a book can do。 There are a truly astounding number of POVs and this does a great job of making a big, stressful conflict seem even more engrossing。 My struggle with this book was largely due to the huge gear shift from act 1 to act 2。 The large number of POVs that made the first portion of the book so compelling became frustrating when the action slowed down because suddenly there are 10-15 major characters to keep track of that I've developed no emotional attachment to and we're 30-40% of the way into the book。 I'm used to this feeling with some action movies and war movies but never expected to feel this way about a Star Wars book。 By the time we made it to act 3, I was more interested in the plot but never ended up developing a connection with a lot of the main characters。 ((view spoiler)[Except for Bell and Loden。 I am deeply, deeply invested in them and need to know what happens after that ending。 (hide spoiler)])I did enjoy the sheer amount of new Star Wars lore in this story。 There's a lot about hyperspace, which I found surprisingly exciting, and the look at the Republic in the height of its glory was definitely neat。 This helped tide me through the periods when I wasn't as into the story as I wanted to be。If you're open to a story that feels more like Star Trek than Star Wars, I think you'd enjoy Light of the Jedi more than I did。 There were parts of the book I really liked yet a good 100-150 pages that I had to drag myself through。 That said, I will give The Rising Storm a try when it comes out in July as I'm hoping for more on some outstanding plot points。 C/W:(view spoiler)[large-scale disaster, death, drug use, war violence (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

I grew up in the era of Dark horse comics and a wonderful series called Tales of the Jedi。 This is a good tale along those same lines even though it is technically a different time period。 It is the golden age of the high republic and the Jedi are as numerous as the stars。 A new galactic outpost station is meant to bring more planetary systems into this golden age。 Then out of the blue a starship is hit while in hyperspace。 A new enemy of the state is reviled。 What can the Jedi do when lives are I grew up in the era of Dark horse comics and a wonderful series called Tales of the Jedi。 This is a good tale along those same lines even though it is technically a different time period。 It is the golden age of the high republic and the Jedi are as numerous as the stars。 A new galactic outpost station is meant to bring more planetary systems into this golden age。 Then out of the blue a starship is hit while in hyperspace。 A new enemy of the state is reviled。 What can the Jedi do when lives are lost even to their own numbers? check it out in audio form so that you can get all the cool sound effects to go along with the story。 。。。more

This was not a good book。 There were way to many characters, some of them were killed in a way that should have been soul crushing, but I could hardly remember the characters。 And it mostly felt like they are forcing a replacement for knights of the old republic, with a new, awful and uninteresting replacement for Bastila。 I had high hopes for this。 I do hope the next tale will be better。

Great start, can wait to read the rest。

The book picks up in the last 3rd。 It gets you hook to see where the storyline will go。 There are even some hints of the Old Republic。

This was kind of a lot to process。。so many new characters, set in a time we don’t know much about。。but I loved it。 I’d reaaallly like to see a book or something about Avar and Elzar as Padawans。 Hopefully all the questions I have about certain characters will get answered later on in this era

I believed in the hype of this book, and was very excited being a fan of the franchise, including being on the NY Times bestseller list。 I thought it may be as good as it's predecessors。 Although well written, and after a suspenseful, captivating opening few chapters, the plot is weak and overarching, and there's no character development whatsoever。 How can there be with no single main character, replaced instead with an "us vs。 them theme"? Very disappointing。 I believed in the hype of this book, and was very excited being a fan of the franchise, including being on the NY Times bestseller list。 I thought it may be as good as it's predecessors。 Although well written, and after a suspenseful, captivating opening few chapters, the plot is weak and overarching, and there's no character development whatsoever。 How can there be with no single main character, replaced instead with an "us vs。 them theme"? LOVE this new era of Star Wars story telling。 The events of this novel set up the other books very well including the comics。 Trying to stay away from spoilers but if you like Star Wars and want to explore the greater universe outside of the “skywalker” bubble I can’t recommend something stronger。

I enjoyed this book for the most part BUT the amount of characters in this made it get a little confusing at times。 Also feels like a story that could have been epic and action packed but it lacked that quite a bit。I’m curious to see where the story will go in the next book though。 Hopefully it will have more happening and maybe less characters? 😂🤓

While I feel like death wasn't handled particularly well, this was a solid entry into this new era of Star Wars。 I look forward to how these events and characters tie into upcoming media。 While I feel like death wasn't handled particularly well, this was a solid entry into this new era of Star Wars。 I look forward to how these events and characters tie into upcoming media。 。。。more

I personally love the High republic era。 This book is a breath of fresh air in the star wars universe。 It definatly captures the feel of traditional star wars in laying the ground work for many more stories。 I love the pacing in the book and it does a wonderful job as an introduction to a new setting and villian while tying itself to what we would expect from star wars cannon。

Cameron Cuthbert

This would make an excellent Star Wars movie! Hope they do it!

Dan

Very good start to a new era, highly recommend it。 Some very fun new characters and a lot of awesome world building。 The only issue I have with it is that there is a lot going on at once and some of it feels a bit clustered or rushed。 I think this would have benefited from being a duology but I really enjoyed it how it is。

Being the first book of a totally new Star Wars setting, and one that is sure to have a huge multimedia blitz, I wasn't expecting a work of fine literature。There's a new setting, new characters, and a new time period to introduce。 And on that score, Soule does a good job。 There's plenty of new characters introduced, and we lead about the tech of the time period, etc。 We learn about where the Republic is at, and it's a very good place, or at least that's what we are TOLD。What we see in the book, Being the first book of a totally new Star Wars setting, and one that is sure to have a huge multimedia blitz, I wasn't expecting a work of fine literature。There's a new setting, new characters, and a new time period to introduce。 And on that score, Soule does a good job。 There's plenty of new characters introduced, and we lead about the tech of the time period, etc。 We learn about where the Republic is at, and it's a very good place, or at least that's what we are TOLD。What we see in the book, though it that the Republic has no defense against a bunch of pirates that have 3 capital ships。 Three。 The Jedi can't really stop them either。 Only 200 years later, there is the Empire, and the death star。 But now, we have pirates with three ships。 It just doesn't add up。 Then there's the fact that this is when everything is supposed to be good, and there a seriously high body count here。 It's odd。 Not sure I'm a fan of Charles Soule, he's not a bad comic writer, but this is his 2nd book I've read by him, and both have been disappointing so far。 。。。more
