Summary

Greg Mortenson, the bestselling author of Three Cups of Tea, is a man who has built a global reputation as a selfless humanitarian and children’s crusader, and he’s been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize。 But, as Jon Krakauer demonstrates in this extensively researched and penetrating book, he is not all that he appears to be。

Based on wide-ranging interviews with former employees, board members, and others who have intimate knowledge of Mortenson and his charity, the Central Asia Institute, Three Cups of Deceit uncovers multiple layers of deception behind Mortenson’s public image。 Was his crusade really inspired by a desire to repay the kindness of villagers who nursed him back to health when he became lost on his descent down K2? Was he abducted and held for eight days by the Taliban? Has his charity built all of the schools that he has claimed? This book is a passionately argued plea for the truth, and a tragic tale of good intentions gone very wrong。

100% of Jon Krakauer’s proceeds from the sale of Three Cups of Deceit will be donated to the “Stop Girl Trafficking” project at the American Himalayan Foundation (www。himalayan-foundation。org/live/pro。。。)。

Another great investigation by Krakauer。 I read and loved "Three Cups of Tea & Stones into Schools" when they were published。 Sadly, the stories in these books were fictional, and efforts made to build schools by the author have been grossly misrepresented。 I had no idea, and I sure millions more didn't know the level deceit by Greg Mortenson。 Another great investigation by Krakauer。 I read and loved "Three Cups of Tea & Stones into Schools" when they were published。 Sadly, the stories in these books were fictional, and efforts made to build schools by the author have been grossly misrepresented。 I had no idea, and I sure millions more didn't know the level deceit by Greg Mortenson。 。。。more

Like Krakauer, I too was inspired by Mortenson's book "Three Cups of Tea" and the work he was doing to build schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan。 My class made a donation to Pennies For Peace。 So it was with some disappointment that I learned the extent of Mortenson's misappropriation of the money donated to CAI and Pennies For Peace。 Krakauer, as always, does his homework when it comes to research and verifying facts on the topics he writes about。 Like Krakauer, I too was inspired by Mortenson's book "Three Cups of Tea" and the work he was doing to build schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan。 My class made a donation to Pennies For Peace。 So it was with some disappointment that I learned the extent of Mortenson's misappropriation of the money donated to CAI and Pennies For Peace。 Krakauer, as always, does his homework when it comes to research and verifying facts on the topics he writes about。 。。。more

Like so many thousands of others, I bought and read Greg Mortenson's memoir, "Three Cups of Tea," back in the early 2000's。 I was mesmerized and inspired, caught up in the feel-good/do-good message Mortenson preached。 And when Jon Krakaer's investigative piece aired revealing the cracks in the story's foundation, I threw the book away。 Literally。 I highly recommend this long-form piece of journalism from Krakauer's investigation and subsequent revelation on 60 Minutes in 2011 of the parts of Mor Like so many thousands of others, I bought and read Greg Mortenson's memoir, "Three Cups of Tea," back in the early 2000's。 I was mesmerized and inspired, caught up in the feel-good/do-good message Mortenson preached。 And when Jon Krakaer's investigative piece aired revealing the cracks in the story's foundation, I threw the book away。 Literally。 I highly recommend this long-form piece of journalism from Krakauer's investigation and subsequent revelation on 60 Minutes in 2011 of the parts of Mortenson's memoir that don't fit the narrative he told。 。。。more

I'm not sure there is an easier way to tell if somebody is a fraud and a huckster than to first find out if his book was featured as the Oprah Winfrey Book of the Month。 Holy cats, some racket this guy ran。 Greg Mortenson made up incredible story after fantastical story only to never be fact checked by anyone in the media as he raised millions and millions to build schools for girls in Pakistan。 Few of the buildings are actually used but said money did fund quite the high flying lifestyle。 This I'm not sure there is an easier way to tell if somebody is a fraud and a huckster than to first find out if his book was featured as the Oprah Winfrey Book of the Month。 Holy cats, some racket this guy ran。 Greg Mortenson made up incredible story after fantastical story only to never be fact checked by anyone in the media as he raised millions and millions to build schools for girls in Pakistan。 Few of the buildings are actually used but said money did fund quite the high flying lifestyle。 This goes to prove my old adage that goes a little something like, if you're ever thinking of giving to a charity。。。。don't。 Three Cups of Deceit。。。。。four stars。 。。。more

I read Three Cups of Tea in middle school, and our classes raised a bunch of money for CAI。 So I felt like I had to read this book。 It was pretty interesting; Krakauer is just absolutely fuming the entire time。

It’s not that Greg Mortenson didn’t do some great work。 He did。 But he also conned, lied and stole so it completely taints everything else。 Even if only 1/3 of the stuff in this book is true。 Dude is a criminal。

A must-read expose on Greg Mortensen。

Even at 3 hours, this was too long。 (And I was a captive audience while driving around on a very busy day。) The author was early on personally giving to the charity, and it is an area of his interest。 But the book gets bogged down in too many grinding details long after making the point。

I actually didn't know anything about Greg Mortenson before I read this book, so I'm glad I read it before I, like so many people, got sucked into the Three Cups myth。 Solidly written as always for Jon Krakauer。 I actually didn't know anything about Greg Mortenson before I read this book, so I'm glad I read it before I, like so many people, got sucked into the Three Cups myth。 Solidly written as always for Jon Krakauer。 。。。more

Short, well researched rebuttal to Three cups of Tea which I vaguely remember reading about 8 years ago。 It's a shame it didn't have Greg's feedback or explore wider issues that probably take place in other nonprofits。 Short, well researched rebuttal to Three cups of Tea which I vaguely remember reading about 8 years ago。 It's a shame it didn't have Greg's feedback or explore wider issues that probably take place in other nonprofits。 。。。more

I'm normally a big fan of Krakauer's work, and I do think what he tried to do with Three Cups of Deceit is admirable。 However, the story gets somewhat clouded by what is obviously a very personal hurt felt by Krakauer。 The book reads a bit like a personal vendetta, which is somewhat understandable given that Krakauer was duped by Mortenson (and had not only financially contributed to the CAI but also put his name alongside Mortenson by introducing him at a few speaking events)。 Overall I think i I'm normally a big fan of Krakauer's work, and I do think what he tried to do with Three Cups of Deceit is admirable。 However, the story gets somewhat clouded by what is obviously a very personal hurt felt by Krakauer。 The book reads a bit like a personal vendetta, which is somewhat understandable given that Krakauer was duped by Mortenson (and had not only financially contributed to the CAI but also put his name alongside Mortenson by introducing him at a few speaking events)。 Overall I think it was important that Mortenson be exposed, but I don't know that Krakauer was the right man for the job given how close he is personally to the story。 。。。more

Krakauer, as always, is an excellent writer。 I think he could write about belly button lint and make it enjoyable to read。 This book is a perfect little tidbit of a takedown of the fraud perpetrated by the Three Cups of Tea author; the great pun of Krakauer's title is an added bonus。 Krakauer, as always, is an excellent writer。 I think he could write about belly button lint and make it enjoyable to read。 This book is a perfect little tidbit of a takedown of the fraud perpetrated by the Three Cups of Tea author; the great pun of Krakauer's title is an added bonus。 。。。more

A very thorough explanation of the ways Greg Mortenson has conned people through Islamophobia and white saviorism, although Krakauer doesn't name those factors explicitly, and the text would feel much more complete if he had delved into WHY Mortenson does the things he does。 A very thorough explanation of the ways Greg Mortenson has conned people through Islamophobia and white saviorism, although Krakauer doesn't name those factors explicitly, and the text would feel much more complete if he had delved into WHY Mortenson does the things he does。 。。。more

3。5 out of 5 starsThis book really opened my eyes about the book I was forced to read in ninth grade。 I heard him speak and read the book。 But now I feel bad that my money (as little as it was) went into the pockets of someone who wasn’t holding up their end of the bargain。 I listened to this as an audiobook and loved the audiobook version。 It felt like listening to a friend rant about something。 That being said if I had physically read the book I might have put it down for the fact that it felt 3。5 out of 5 starsThis book really opened my eyes about the book I was forced to read in ninth grade。 I heard him speak and read the book。 But now I feel bad that my money (as little as it was) went into the pockets of someone who wasn’t holding up their end of the bargain。 I listened to this as an audiobook and loved the audiobook version。 It felt like listening to a friend rant about something。 That being said if I had physically read the book I might have put it down for the fact that it felt like a Facebook rant。 So I recommend the audiobook because I think it suits it better。 Also it’s only 3 hours (although I listen on double speed so it was only 1。5 hours)。 。。。more

This short exposé about Greg Mortenson and his book Three Cups of Tea was unsettling。 Author Jon Krakauer was at first a fan of Mortenson's and made financial contributions to his charity Central Asia Institute (CAI) but then learned of irregularities in the book and CAI's accounting。 I myself had questioned Mortenson's claims in his book that I read for my book club and said in my review "He himself doesn't have to be perfect, for his charity to be valuable"。 At first, I thought Krakauer was ju This short exposé about Greg Mortenson and his book Three Cups of Tea was unsettling。 Author Jon Krakauer was at first a fan of Mortenson's and made financial contributions to his charity Central Asia Institute (CAI) but then learned of irregularities in the book and CAI's accounting。 I myself had questioned Mortenson's claims in his book that I read for my book club and said in my review "He himself doesn't have to be perfect, for his charity to be valuable"。 At first, I thought Krakauer was just being sour grapes, but the lack of accounting for a charity's money is wrong, and the way Mortenson kept his book on best-seller lists was dishonest。 After reading this book I discovered that Mortenson had to repay a million dollars to CAI and is no longer on their board of directors after this book came out。 I still believe Mortenson truly meant to help and has done much good with building schools in the Pakistan and Afghanistan regions, but it is unfortunate his legacy is now tarnished by some poor choices。 。。。more
