Summary

Once considered tedious, the field of statistics is rapidly evolving into a discipline Hal Varian, chief economist at Google, has actually called “sexy。” From batting averages and political polls to game shows and medical research, the real-world application of statistics continues to grow by leaps and bounds。 How can we catch schools that cheat on standardized tests? How does Netflix know which movies you’ll like? What is causing the rising incidence of autism? As best-selling author Charles Wheelan shows us in Naked Statistics, the right data and a few well-chosen statistical tools can help us answer these questions and more。
For those who slept through Stats 101, this book is a lifesaver。 Wheelan strips away the arcane and technical details and focuses on the underlying intuition that drives statistical analysis。 He clarifies key concepts such as inference, correlation, and regression analysis, reveals how biased or careless parties can manipulate or misrepresent data, and shows us how brilliant and creative researchers are exploiting the valuable data from natural experiments to tackle thorny questions。

And in Wheelan’s trademark style, there’s not a dull page in sight。 You’ll encounter clever Schlitz Beer marketers leveraging basic probability, an International Sausage Festival illuminating the tenets of the central limit theorem, and a head-scratching choice from the famous game show Let’s Make a Deal—and you’ll come away with insights each time。 With the wit, accessibility, and sheer fun that turned Naked Economics into a bestseller, Wheelan defies the odds yet again by bringing another essential, formerly unglamorous discipline to life。

This book is good for people who don't have any background whatsoever in math and statistics。 If you've taken even basic math or statistics courses this book probably isn't worth your time。 It walks through basis statistics principles such are probability, correlation, regression, and some other theories in layman's terms which is a nice reminder but not really worth the time for the read。 This book also gave so many examples around how NOT to do statistics。 By this I mean all the ways people ac This book is good for people who don't have any background whatsoever in math and statistics。 If you've taken even basic math or statistics courses this book probably isn't worth your time。 It walks through basis statistics principles such are probability, correlation, regression, and some other theories in layman's terms which is a nice reminder but not really worth the time for the read。 This book also gave so many examples around how NOT to do statistics。 By this I mean all the ways people accidentally and purposefully use statistics to come up with 'false' conclusions。 To me this kind of overpowered the book and left me feeling less interested about statistics after reading the book than before starting it。 。。。more

I enjoyed reading the book; however, I really needed to read a Statistics for Dummies book first lol!

This book is a hilarious introduction to the world of statistics。 His not so real-world examples of how to interpret statistics was really helpful to me in understanding my social stats text book for my Quantitative Research course。 Nearly everything is covered and explained in a way that sticks。

Rejeev Divakaran

I found it too basic。

Emily

Really entertaining and supplemented my graduate level stats course this semester。 I read it for pleasure though, was not assigned。

Awesome sauce。 Very good book。 I recommend this to anyone in social science。 Either aspiring researchers or experienced professionals that blindly use data, analyses or insights from others to shape ideas or storylines。 Before drawing conclusions from the numbers, we must understand what the numbers are saying。 And this book gives a solid insight into the understanding of numbers。

Abandoning this one。 Started out very promising (CSI regression analysis 🤣🤣), but became very boring very quickly。 And this coming from someone extremely passionate about stats。 I think one of the things that put me off was all the heavily USA focussed examples; I probably would have related more (and found it more interesting) if the examples were more general。 Life is too short to read boring books!

A great statistics primer written in an approachable (but still appropriately complicated at times) manner。 My one gripe was he really harps on his bad jokes in the earlier chapters and keeps repeating them long after he should've given up, but luckily either I got used to it or he stopped doing it by midway through the book。A lot of good food for thought and reference but one of my favorites is: "Not that long ago, information was much harder to gather and far more expensive to analyze。 Imagine A great statistics primer written in an approachable (but still appropriately complicated at times) manner。 My one gripe was he really harps on his bad jokes in the earlier chapters and keeps repeating them long after he should've given up, but luckily either I got used to it or he stopped doing it by midway through the book。A lot of good food for thought and reference but one of my favorites is: "Not that long ago, information was much harder to gather and far more expensive to analyze。 Imagine studying the information from one million credit card transactions in the era--only a few decades back--when there were merely paper receipts。" 。。。more

Love it。 Every day language and examples to explain quite complicated concepts in statistics。 Finishing this book, I am now taking in numbers with a pinch of salt。

Required for first analytics course。 Found the material to be fairly basic but enjoyed the cheesy humor。 Would be interested to read other books of his regarding topics that I know less about。 For someone looking for fun stories to remember analytics applications, this is a great pick。

Clear crisp and concise explanation of intricate topics in Statistics。 Must have for every statistics student and enthusiast。 Amazing read!

What I find utmostly importand nowadays, especially during a prolonged pandemic and distrust towards science, is education and knowledge of statistics。 It is a powerful mathematical tool to generalize data and to get information applicable in day to day life。 It is also tricky and used incorrectly can lead to misconceptions。 Naked statistics explains statistics in a way that people without degree can understand it and apply it。 Therefore I would reccomend it to everyone。

The amount of stats presented in this book can be summarized on a single sheet of paper。 The rest 300+ pages are examples, 'hypothetical-s' and anecdotes。 But I still think this is a good read。 It's easy to follow, it builds intuition and it is structured properly (following chapters expand previous ones)。 Overall it's a nice short read that drives a lot of fundamental ideas home in a very relaxed and sometimes entertaining way。But the book is great at showing real-life application of basic stat The amount of stats presented in this book can be summarized on a single sheet of paper。 The rest 300+ pages are examples, 'hypothetical-s' and anecdotes。 But I still think this is a good read。 It's easy to follow, it builds intuition and it is structured properly (following chapters expand previous ones)。 Overall it's a nice short read that drives a lot of fundamental ideas home in a very relaxed and sometimes entertaining way。But the book is great at showing real-life application of basic stats knowledge。 It is almost unique in this regard。 Despite some examples are being silly, you can easily see how the stats modelling is widely applicable in real life。Highly recommend for software engineers。 Note of warning though the coverage pretty much stops on normal distribution。 I've picked this book to learn more about t-tests and t-distributions。 But this topic is barely touched。 。。。more

A book for those who do not like math and want to understand statistics。 Overall is a good book, and it explain statistics through story telling which makes it more engaging。 Also it is not “mathematical”, it’s approach is to explain the concept behind rather than going though the formulas’ details。 I think it does a good job covering the basic content, although I would’ve written a chapter on Bayesian statistics as well。 I think it could be a book used in schools -I’ve read in some comment that A book for those who do not like math and want to understand statistics。 Overall is a good book, and it explain statistics through story telling which makes it more engaging。 Also it is not “mathematical”, it’s approach is to explain the concept behind rather than going though the formulas’ details。 I think it does a good job covering the basic content, although I would’ve written a chapter on Bayesian statistics as well。 I think it could be a book used in schools -I’ve read in some comment that “How to lie with statistics” is a better book, a I think this one is way more basic。 That being said, I do not understand how some comments regarding people’s weight ( eg “hey, you paid for this book at least I can make you skinny”) weren’t edit out。 They add absolutely nothing to the content and can be upsetting for some people。 Because of that I’m choosing not to rate this book 。。。more

Everyone should read this book。 Even if maths scare you, don't worry, there is a minimal amount of numbers in it (specially for a statistics book)。 However, it will allow you to understand the logic behincd the most used statistical concepts, from central tenedency to the central limit theorem, and maybe more important, to avoid fall victim of ill intended use of these tools。 (Note: you wont become an statistician after reading this book, and it is not its intention, but it is an excelent first Everyone should read this book。 Even if maths scare you, don't worry, there is a minimal amount of numbers in it (specially for a statistics book)。 However, it will allow you to understand the logic behincd the most used statistical concepts, from central tenedency to the central limit theorem, and maybe more important, to avoid fall victim of ill intended use of these tools。 (Note: you wont become an statistician after reading this book, and it is not its intention, but it is an excelent first step) 。。。more

The Good:- A fairly light, easy, and quick read providing a light refresher on the basic statistical concepts of probability, variance, regression models, sampling, and so on。The Bad:- The book is rather U。S。-oriented in the examples provided。 Illustrating an example with the number of tries in NFL is not very useful for someone who barely even knows what the NFL even is。- A lot of the examples are extremely well known, especially for someone who has studied statistics several times before。 Mont The Good:- A fairly light, easy, and quick read providing a light refresher on the basic statistical concepts of probability, variance, regression models, sampling, and so on。The Bad:- The book is rather U。S。-oriented in the examples provided。 Illustrating an example with the number of tries in NFL is not very useful for someone who barely even knows what the NFL even is。- A lot of the examples are extremely well known, especially for someone who has studied statistics several times before。 Monty Hall problem, Target pregnancy prediction, etc。 However, I did pick up a few interesting new pieces of statistical trivia。- Most of the interesting mathematical 'meat' is either relegated to the appendix or 'left for a more advanced text'。 I think this is a shame, as the intuition can only take you so far and the maths of statistics is not overly complex。 If this book is intended for the mathematical and statistical layperson, then the author does a poor job of encouraging the reader to explore the concepts in more details - instead preferring for the user to simply let a computer program crunch the numbers (which is contrary to one of the key points made in the book!)The Ugly- The book is littered with typographical errors, particular when representing formulae inline (it took me a long time to realise that a jumble of dots was meant to be a square root)。 This really distracted from the points the book was trying to make。 。。。more

Good Reference point。 Data mining era。 Google, Netflix, Facebook all seem to predict our habits through data。 Political leaders can mislead with manipulating data。 Good book

Great Overview Entertaining, intuitive, and practical。 This is a great overview of the field and it's associated power, dangers, and mis-understandings。As someone who actually has used statistical analysis in a professional capacity this book gave me a much better understanding of the underling principles behind the math and the pitfalls to avoid。 Great Overview Entertaining, intuitive, and practical。 This is a great overview of the field and it's associated power, dangers, and mis-understandings。As someone who actually has used statistical analysis in a professional capacity this book gave me a much better understanding of the underling principles behind the math and the pitfalls to avoid。 。。。more

。。。more
