Very goodI was between 4 and 5 stars for this， but ultimately I went for 4 because it just didn't grip me emotionally enough for the 5 star treatment。 However， this is a very good novel。This is about a life led by William Stoner， a seemingly unremarkable college lecturer。 It's about much more than that though and I would guess it's one of those books that readers can have a different interpretations of。 For me， I think it's about how unextrodinary lives led can be extraordinary in there own way。 Very goodI was between 4 and 5 stars for this， but ultimately I went for 4 because it just didn't grip me emotionally enough for the 5 star treatment。 However， this is a very good novel。This is about a life led by William Stoner， a seemingly unremarkable college lecturer。 It's about much more than that though and I would guess it's one of those books that readers can have a different interpretations of。 For me， I think it's about how unextrodinary lives led can be extraordinary in there own way。 The Book is thoughtful， ultimately emotional and covers other themes such as interpersonal relationships， friendships， regret （or maybe lack of） and love。 Highly recommended。 。。。more

Stoner is a fascinating read。 It has few of the elements that good books traditionally possess: there is no action or resolution， no plot twists; indeed， there is not really a plot at all。 It is merely a linear story about a man named William Stoner who was born on a farm and goes to university and marries the wrong woman and teaches at the university for many years。 Nothing happens。 And yet it has a place among the greatest books I have ever read， because despite this， it is a meditation on the Stoner is a fascinating read。 It has few of the elements that good books traditionally possess: there is no action or resolution， no plot twists; indeed， there is not really a plot at all。 It is merely a linear story about a man named William Stoner who was born on a farm and goes to university and marries the wrong woman and teaches at the university for many years。 Nothing happens。 And yet it has a place among the greatest books I have ever read， because despite this， it is a meditation on the beauty but brevity of human life。 It is a devastating novel which touches on the value we each place on our own lives and all of the trivial events which occupy them。One of Stoner's friends describes his character wonderfully: "the dreamer， the madman in a madder world， our own midwestern Don Quixote without his Sancho， gamboling under the blue sky… But you have the taint， the old infirmity。 You think there's something here， something to find"。 Like Don Quixote， Stoner sees the potential life holds， but although he does his best， he still makes mistakes and he is torn apart by these as he lies dying and asks himself "What did you expect？" 。。。more

A damn fine book。 Some of the most balanced， precise， and devastating prose i’ve read in a while。 The novel’s language is only made better by its plot: at once languid and atmospheric， as well as thrilling and revelatory。 It held my attention the whole way though。 Williams is one of those writers who make it look too easy。 Glad to end the year with one of the best books i’ve read this year。 Definitely gonna read more Johnny Boy。（Sorry it took me so long， boys！）
