Colum McCann once called Stoner one of the great forgotten novels of the past century, but it seems it is forgotten no longer - in 2013 translations of Stoner began appearing on bestseller lists across Europe。 Forty-eight years after its first, quiet publication in the US, Stoner is finally finding the wide and devoted readership it deserves。 Have you read it yet?William Stoner enters the University of Missouri at nineteen to study agriculture。, A seminar on English literature changes his life, and he never returns to work on his father's farm。 Stoner becomes a teacher。 He marries the wrong woman。, His life is quiet, and after his death his colleagues remember him rarely。 Yet with truthfulness, compassion and intense power, this novel uncovers a story of universal value。 Stoner tells of the conflicts, defeats and victories of the human race that pass unrecorded by history, and reclaims the significance of an individual life。, A reading experience like no other, itself a paean to the power of literature, it is a novel to be savoured。

Very goodI was between 4 and 5 stars for this, but ultimately I went for 4 because it just didn't grip me emotionally enough for the 5 star treatment。 However, this is a very good novel。This is about a life led by William Stoner, a seemingly unremarkable college lecturer。 It's about much more than that though and I would guess it's one of those books that readers can have a different interpretations of。 For me, I think it's about how unextrodinary lives led can be extraordinary in there own way。 Very goodI was between 4 and 5 stars for this, but ultimately I went for 4 because it just didn't grip me emotionally enough for the 5 star treatment。 However, this is a very good novel。This is about a life led by William Stoner, a seemingly unremarkable college lecturer。 It's about much more than that though and I would guess it's one of those books that readers can have a different interpretations of。 For me, I think it's about how unextrodinary lives led can be extraordinary in there own way。 The Book is thoughtful, ultimately emotional and covers other themes such as interpersonal relationships, friendships, regret (or maybe lack of) and love。 Highly recommended。 。。。more

At first this story seems dull and slow, but the constant pace, prose and integrity of the main character becomes a comfort。 The type of book you let simmer in your thoughts after reading。

this book is the antithesis of Goodbye Mr。 Chips, and although throughout the novel it is hints at themes of depression and melancholy, lingers on frustration but nowhere does the story suspend itself enough to have a longing impression of negativity that could pervade the readers mind and put them into a state of misery that some other ‘depressing’ books are capable of doing (cc: Imagine Me Gone) cool book

So perfectly written and so wretchedly depressing。 I cared very much for William Stoner and the happiness he never quite got to have。

Stoner is a fascinating read。 It has few of the elements that good books traditionally possess: there is no action or resolution, no plot twists; indeed, there is not really a plot at all。 It is merely a linear story about a man named William Stoner who was born on a farm and goes to university and marries the wrong woman and teaches at the university for many years。 Nothing happens。 And yet it has a place among the greatest books I have ever read, because despite this, it is a meditation on the Stoner is a fascinating read。 It has few of the elements that good books traditionally possess: there is no action or resolution, no plot twists; indeed, there is not really a plot at all。 It is merely a linear story about a man named William Stoner who was born on a farm and goes to university and marries the wrong woman and teaches at the university for many years。 Nothing happens。 And yet it has a place among the greatest books I have ever read, because despite this, it is a meditation on the beauty but brevity of human life。 It is a devastating novel which touches on the value we each place on our own lives and all of the trivial events which occupy them。One of Stoner's friends describes his character wonderfully: "the dreamer, the madman in a madder world, our own midwestern Don Quixote without his Sancho, gamboling under the blue sky… But you have the taint, the old infirmity。 You think there's something here, something to find"。 Like Don Quixote, Stoner sees the potential life holds, but although he does his best, he still makes mistakes and he is torn apart by these as he lies dying and asks himself "What did you expect?" 。。。more

Stoner grew on me。 At first, I didn't care for the book; too bleak。 As I read further, I wasn't sure if I liked it or not。 So I continued to read。 Then, I started liking it and by the end, I was incredibly moved and enthralled by the book。 The characters, particularly the main character Stoner, are the embodiment of flat affect。 And tribute to John Williams, it is not easy to write about characters with such flatness and keep readers engaged。 But the book is by no means simply a tragedy。 Stoner' Stoner grew on me。 At first, I didn't care for the book; too bleak。 As I read further, I wasn't sure if I liked it or not。 So I continued to read。 Then, I started liking it and by the end, I was incredibly moved and enthralled by the book。 The characters, particularly the main character Stoner, are the embodiment of flat affect。 And tribute to John Williams, it is not easy to write about characters with such flatness and keep readers engaged。 But the book is by no means simply a tragedy。 Stoner's life evolves into one that makes him realize he had experienced passion (not flatness) in his life。 I also connected with William's experienced portrayal of academia。 It was a sad reminder of how petty and destructive a few people in academia are toward their colleagues。 。。。more

I’ve read some amazing books this year and the one I just completed, “Stoner”, by John Williams, is placed firmly in this group。 A beautifully-written story with wonderfully-developed characters。 An amazing and thought-provoking journey, from beginning to end。 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️📗📖📙

A damn fine book。 Some of the most balanced, precise, and devastating prose i’ve read in a while。 The novel’s language is only made better by its plot: at once languid and atmospheric, as well as thrilling and revelatory。 It held my attention the whole way though。 Williams is one of those writers who make it look too easy。 Glad to end the year with one of the best books i’ve read this year。 Definitely gonna read more Johnny Boy。(Sorry it took me so long, boys!)

Some have called this a "perfect" novel。 I would agree。 This is a quiet story of an obscure, forgettable midwestern English professor whose life epitomizes mediocrity。 There is nothing earth shattering here。 Yet it has become one of my favorite books。 From the very start the novel reels you in。 Williams can create drama in his descriptions of the most mundane people, places, and events。 The prose is outstanding with just beautiful paragraphs。 I read greedily but then just had to slow down to sav Some have called this a "perfect" novel。 I would agree。 This is a quiet story of an obscure, forgettable midwestern English professor whose life epitomizes mediocrity。 There is nothing earth shattering here。 Yet it has become one of my favorite books。 From the very start the novel reels you in。 Williams can create drama in his descriptions of the most mundane people, places, and events。 The prose is outstanding with just beautiful paragraphs。 I read greedily but then just had to slow down to savor the words。 At first the protagonist William Stoner seemed elusive with his extreme interiority but by the end of the novel, I felt that I knew him intimately, more importantly, I cared about him deeply。 The novel follows him from his early hardscrabble life on the farm to falling in love with learning to his life in academia with all its satisfactions and pettiness to his life as a husband, father, and lover。 Things do not really work out for him in so many ways。 And still he loved his life until the end。 The experience of reading this is very personal so I will not comment further other than to recommend reading this novel。 。。。more
