Summary

Deadly storms have ravaged Mina’s homeland for generations。 Floods sweep away entire villages, while bloody wars are waged over the few remaining resources。 Her people believe the Sea God, once their protector, now curses them with death and despair。 In an attempt to appease him, each year a beautiful maiden is thrown into the sea to serve as the Sea God’s bride, in the hopes that one day the “true bride” will be chosen and end the suffering。

Many believe that Shim Cheong, the most beautiful girl in the village—and the beloved of Mina’s older brother Joon—may be the legendary true bride。 But on the night Cheong is to be sacrificed, Joon follows Cheong out to sea, even knowing that to interfere is a death sentence。 To save her brother, Mina throws herself into the water in Cheong’s stead。

Swept away to the Spirit Realm, a magical city of lesser gods and mythical beasts, Mina seeks out the Sea God, only to find him caught in an enchanted sleep。 With the help of a mysterious young man named Shin—as well as a motley crew of demons, gods and spirits—Mina sets out to wake the Sea God and bring an end to the killer storms once and for all。

But she doesn’t have much time: A human cannot live long in the land of the spirits。 And there are those who would do anything to keep the Sea God from waking…

A massive thank you to Netgalley for breaking my heart by providing me with an advanced copy of The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea by Axie Oh!The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea is the story of a girl who's country is plagued by constant storms and weather anomalies, all of which are attributed to an irate Sea God。 The people believe that the only way to appease this god is by sacrificing a girl each year to be the bride to this god。 They believe that once the one true bride is sacrificed these sto A massive thank you to Netgalley for breaking my heart by providing me with an advanced copy of The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea by Axie Oh!The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea is the story of a girl who's country is plagued by constant storms and weather anomalies, all of which are attributed to an irate Sea God。 The people believe that the only way to appease this god is by sacrificing a girl each year to be the bride to this god。 They believe that once the one true bride is sacrificed these storms will stop。The story starts off with the main character, Mina, trying to find and follow her brother on one of these sacrificial nights。 A few things don't go as planned and Mina ends up in the ocean and is taken as the intended bride。 But when she wakes up in the spirit realm things are very different than what was believed。 Although she was not the one that was meant to be sacrificed she still thinks she might have a way of fixing things for the human world - to bring back order。This book was devoured in two days (it would have been one sitting if I did not have to work as well!)。 I've always loved Korean culture, but this book was the biggest warm embrace of a YA fantasy book that exists。 If you love historical K-dramas, Ghibli or books like Julie Kagawa's Shadow of the Fox, then this is definitely the book for you。 The characters are amazing and the small truths that are revealed in the last half are so heartwarming and heart wrenching at the same time that I am not lying when I say I cried my eyes out。 I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for their next Asian inspired fantasy read。 It truly is a masterpiece! 。。。more

DNF at 20%I've been intrigued by the Korean mythology。 I hoped to learn/read something I wasn't familiar with。 But sadly this book is painfully young adult, lol。 The potential of a love story, even if innocent, between two 17 year old children is the last thing I want to read。 Plus the language, as expected for a book for younger readers, was too simple and dragged too much for me to be able to enjoy it。 *Book from the publisher with many thanks! I adored this mythical, female-led, fantastical tale of bravery, family and friendship。The world building is quick and immersive。 Our protagonist is flawed, scared and has a propensity for tears。 That said, she's also brave, loyal and unwilling to sit round and wait to be rescued。 I'll be getting it on the school library shelves the day it's published! Okay, so since Spirited Away is my favorite movie of all times this was a clear must-read for me from the get-go and I am so happy it actually managed to deliver。It's a beautifully written retelling of a classic korean tale and I was completely enchanted by it。 I don't know much about korean mythology, but it felt a lot like reading one of the Ghibli movies I love。I was immediately taken in by the adorable characters in the whimsical, imaginitive spirit realm it was set in。 The story focuses on Okay, so since Spirited Away is my favorite movie of all times this was a clear must-read for me from the get-go and I am so happy it actually managed to deliver。It's a beautifully written retelling of a classic korean tale and I was completely enchanted by it。 I don't know much about korean mythology, but it felt a lot like reading one of the Ghibli movies I love。I was immediately taken in by the adorable characters in the whimsical, imaginitive spirit realm it was set in。 The story focuses on bonds between friends and family next to the sweetest love story。 It was a really quick read and easy read for me that I couldn't put down。The ending is rather predictable, but I really didn't mind。 It's an absolute feel-good story to me and I adored it so much。 I will definitely buy the book when it comes out, so I can re-read in the future。Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers Hodder & Stoughton for this ARC in exchange for my honest review。 。。。more

This was an okay book。 It was one of my most anticipated releases of 2022 and I am still glad I got the opportunity to read an ARC of it。The best thing about The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea was undoubtedly the setting; it felt very vivid and well crafted, I could imagine myself wandering in the Spirit Realm along with Mina; it was also pretty original, I had never read of a realm such as this one and I think I'd read more books set in the same universe。Another thing I really liked was how impo This was an okay book。 It was one of my most anticipated releases of 2022 and I am still glad I got the opportunity to read an ARC of it。The best thing about The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea was undoubtedly the setting; it felt very vivid and well crafted, I could imagine myself wandering in the Spirit Realm along with Mina; it was also pretty original, I had never read of a realm such as this one and I think I'd read more books set in the same universe。Another thing I really liked was how important of a role stories played in this book。 It was really nice, as the story itself was crafted a bit like a fairytale itself。I found the plot a bit boring and the plot twists were easily predictable, but my main issues is that everything felt too convenient。 When I read fantasies, I want the stakes to be higher, the feelings deeper and everything a bit more tension-filled。 I expected everything to go as it indeed went, so there was nothing to keep me engaged。I also did not like the romance, but I expected as much, since I am more of a slow-burn person, and I knew I would not get that, as this is a standalone (which I really appreciate nonetheless)。 In general, they were a cute couple, but not to my taste。As I said, I would read more books set in this universe, especially if they featured Kirin and Namgi, which were my two favourite characters -- and which I ship a lot, thank you very much。Thanks so much to the publisher and Netgalley for this e-ARC! 。。。more

When I was a kid, my aunt and uncle got married in Korea and brought this fairy tale book back for me called ‘The Faithful Daughter Shim Chong。’ I still keep it on my bookshelf 20 years later。 I happened to stumble upon ‘The Girl Who Fell Beneath The Sea’ while scrolling around on goodreads, and the plot is sounding awfully familiar to the story I was so fond of as a kid。 It’s now become my most anticipated read for the new year and I cannot wait for its release!

I recieved this ARC from netgalley in exchange for an honest review so let's get into it。 I'm giving this book a 4。25 out of 5。 The reason that it's not getting a perfect review is mainly because of the end and the relationship between Mina and the main love interest。 I just felt that it was sort of rushed。 Not in terms of how much time it took for them to fall in love because for YA books it's totally on par。 But, I felt like there wasn't enough development。 It wasn't insta-love but there wasn' I recieved this ARC from netgalley in exchange for an honest review so let's get into it。 I'm giving this book a 4。25 out of 5。 The reason that it's not getting a perfect review is mainly because of the end and the relationship between Mina and the main love interest。 I just felt that it was sort of rushed。 Not in terms of how much time it took for them to fall in love because for YA books it's totally on par。 But, I felt like there wasn't enough development。 It wasn't insta-love but there wasn't enough buildup I feel。 I also feel like the ending is wrapped a bit too quickly。 Now that that's out of the way。 I did love this book。 Once I reached the 15% mark, I was hooked and I stayed up until three am reading it, finally finishing it in the early morning cause I did need to get some sleep :)It's marketed as Spirited Away meets Korean folklore and Axie definitely delivered on that。 As somebody who hasn't had much experience with Korean folklore I loved loved loved this book and I feel like I learned a lot too which is always great。 The characters were all so intriguing and interesting。 Mina was amazing。 She was smart but she wasn't unrealistic and I feel like she didn't feed into stereotypes。 Mina wasn't quirky and she wasn't this overly ugly girl that nobody cares about who then goes through a transformation to make her super hot。 I really appreciated that。 When it came to side characters, I loved all of them。 They're well developed and even at the beginning when it seems like Miki, Dai, and Mask have no relevance to the plot aside from plot armor, it's wrapped up and it makes sense。 Axie did a really good job of not having loose ends。 I also loved Namgi and Kirin。 They both played into different tropes and I loved them both equally。 This book is a must-read。 。。。more

All opinions and thoughts are my own。 Have you ever read a book that has everything you love and more? That was this book for me。 Based off a tale from Korean mythology, The title basically gives you the premise - the story starts off with Mina, who fell into the sea to take her sister-in-law's place as the Sea God's bride。 Though I predicted all of the plot twists, especially who Miki, Dai, and Mask were and the identity of the Sea God, I think I would have been less satisfied if my predictions did not come true。 This is a testament to how well-written this book is - the plot twists truly enriched the book, instead of being there just for shock value。 To add, each character had their own role to play, each one being equally necessary to the flow of events, no matter how minor of a character they were。 This cinematic tale is a heart wrenching story of love, loss, and fate。 There are so many layers, and each one of them tugged at my heartstrings。 I appreciate how the importance of familial love was treated with equal respect to the love interest, because most YA books tend to favour chosen love over family。 My favourite character is definitely Mina, with Shin being a close second。 Mina is not necessarily a brilliant warrior, or a super powerful being, but she's just a girl with a big heart。 She does everything with her whole heart, going so far as to jump into the sea (and potentially drown to death) just for the sake of her brother and his wife。 The stories that she told the Sea God to break his curse were also told with passion - you could feel how much she "felt" while telling him these stories, and how badly she wanted to save him。 She is a great friend to everyone, putting all of her new friends beneath the sea before herself。 And when she grew to love, she loved hard。 She was such a light in the book amidst all the gloom, and she has become one of my favourite protagonists。 Mina's superpower is definitely her generous love and tender kindness, a nice contrast to the typical YA protagonists nowadays。 Shin is the mysterious grump, the minimalistic warrior who introduces himself as a nobleman in the Sea God's court。 He does everything dutifully, remaining respectful at all times。 Though Shin does not reveal much through his words, the way he feels translates perfectly。 He slowly begins to open up, and everything falls into place。 Also, how could you not swoon reading Shin's lines towards the end? This warrior is a downright romantic, for someone who is supposed to be stone cold。 All of his words went straight to my heart, and I was clutching my chest while reading the last quarter of the book。 I am also a sucker for the one-year-later epilogues, and the way this one was written was just too beautiful for me to put into words, not just because of how it turned out for Mina and the Sea God, but for how it turned out for everyone。 It almost got me teary-eyed!I've quite literally just finished the book, and I can't find a substantial thing to critique。 If anything, I wished for more character descriptions, but I don't think the book is any less fantastic without them。 I know this is a standalone, but I wouldn't mind reading another book about Shiki and his court。 He was a very intriguing side character, and I would love a glimpse into his side of the sea。 I feel like there is a lot more to him than what we know!In essence, you have slowburn, soulmates, found family, dragons, and a really interesting lore。 What's not to love? The Girl Who Fell Beneath The Sea is perfectly suited for the target YA audience。 Definitely one of my most anticipated releases for 2022!5 out of 5 stars! 。。。more
