Summary

In the year 2044, reality is an ugly place。 The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he's jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS。 Wade's devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world's digital confines, puzzles that are based on their creator's obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them。 When Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize。 The race is on, and if Wade's going to survive, he'll have to win—and confront the real world he's always been so desperate to escape。

Loved this book just as much as I did the first time round too!Though some of the 80's references were lost on me, I still enjoyed it a lot and can't read to read the next one! Keren!! Cuma agak susah buat pertama kali masuk ke ceritanya sih, abisnya kan ini fiksi-ilmiah, jadi banyak istilah asing & baru。 Tapi buat jalan ceritanya seru bgt!! Dibuat penasaran sama tiap babnya, ga bosenin pokoknya。

Just stalk her。 She’ll come around。 Ridiculous creep。 。。。more

A fast-paced and easy book but wasn't a spectacular read。I don't usually read science-fiction / fantasy books so this was a nice change from contemporary fiction。 I enjoyed the plot, and although it was predictable, it was still enjoyable and made me want to keep reading to find out what happened next。 A lot of the backstory about the OASIS and the state of the world was given to you by Wade's narrative which I liked (I hate having to do the work myself!)。 Cline did a great job of building inter A fast-paced and easy book but wasn't a spectacular read。I don't usually read science-fiction / fantasy books so this was a nice change from contemporary fiction。 I enjoyed the plot, and although it was predictable, it was still enjoyable and made me want to keep reading to find out what happened next。 A lot of the backstory about the OASIS and the state of the world was given to you by Wade's narrative which I liked (I hate having to do the work myself!)。 Cline did a great job of building interesting characters and a believable world, although it was unsettling to think how close we are to some sort of OASIS and climate crisis。 Things I didn't like about the book:- The book was written in very teenage language which made it easy to read but was also quite cringe in parts which I didn't like。- I was born in the mid-90s so a lot of the pop culture references went straight over my head and it very much felt like a book aimed at a specific type of person who would revel in the nostalgia of it - sadly this wasn't me。- There were some very unbelievable elements of the book which put me off it a bit。 I don't believe a boy aged 18 who spends 5 days a week at school would have had time to watch all the series and films, play all the video games, and swot up on all the Halliday trivia from the Anorak in the space of what 10 years? And all the challenges to get the keys and unlock the gates seemed conveniently suited to Wade's skills and knowledge。- There was a lot of time in between finding the keys and gates where nothing much happened, and then the book would skip a lot of detail when Wade did manage to find the key! It was very much like "this was the game, luckily I had played it many times, and so I managed to win the X Key"。 I would have liked to have seen more antagonism and moments where Wade failed rather than him luckily succeeding all the time。- Why do authors always force a romantic interest into a story where it's not needed?? I couldn't care less about Wade and Art3mis's romance and was such a distraction from the exciting plot!So overall, a great read on the surface but if you start digging too deep you notice it's obvious flaws and cracks。 。。。more

Listened to the audio version read by Wil Wheaton on a long road trip。 I often struggle with audiobooks as a bad narration can ruin it but Wheaton did an excellent job。 It was entertaining and as I was still a teen in the early 80s I got a lot of the pop culture references so I got the in-jokes。 Fun book。 Not at all interested in reading the sequel, though。 I think the fun of this book is in the discovery and book 2 would just feel “done。”

My favourite book and I basically never read sci-fi/dystopians。

I generally enjoyed the story, though the references were mostly over my head。 Might have been more fun to read if I was able to play along a little but I lack the wealth of 80s pop culture knowledge needed for that。 There were a couple things that I really had to suspend my disbelief to get past。 First of all, there's an energy crisis and apparently renewables never got up to snuff, which is possible but not really probable。 But more importantly in this world where there's no energy, everybody I generally enjoyed the story, though the references were mostly over my head。 Might have been more fun to read if I was able to play along a little but I lack the wealth of 80s pop culture knowledge needed for that。 There were a couple things that I really had to suspend my disbelief to get past。 First of all, there's an energy crisis and apparently renewables never got up to snuff, which is possible but not really probable。 But more importantly in this world where there's no energy, everybody spends all their time in a virtual world that I can only logically assume consumes a lot of energy to run。 This doesn't make any sense。 The other problem for me was the primary antagonist was this evil corporation trying to get the prize and take over the virtual world and monetize it。。 But the creator HATES the idea of his creation being monetized so。。 Why wouldn't he have just written it into his will that only private citizens can inherit it? He's a super genius there's no reason he wouldn't have the foresight to do that。 Lastly I just had a hard time believing nobody solelved the first riddle for so long, but that's just nit picky。 Anyways, problems aside, I mostly liked it and it was a fun casual read。 。。。more

Man, what a poorly written book。In terms of problems, it is definitely written about a neck beard。 Someone who would consider himself to be a nice guy。 Not the best of heroes。 But alright。It talks a lot about being a pop culture master, but it is literally set in 2040 and refers only to 80's pop culture。 That isn't a master, that is a specialist。 That'd be like someone now who just knows a lot about 60's tv and music and movies and just a ridiculous level。 But that is it。 That isn't a pop cultur Man, what a poorly written book。In terms of problems, it is definitely written about a neck beard。 Someone who would consider himself to be a nice guy。 Not the best of heroes。 But alright。It talks a lot about being a pop culture master, but it is literally set in 2040 and refers only to 80's pop culture。 That isn't a master, that is a specialist。 That'd be like someone now who just knows a lot about 60's tv and music and movies and just a ridiculous level。 But that is it。 That isn't a pop culture expert。 Anyways, we have one chapter where he just says for long periods of time what he has seen, watched, listened to, memorized。 Cool。 There is a scene early on where he is supposed to be cool because he is trolling a friend of his, as they insult each other over movie interests。 This argument being playful, but pretty dumb, and apparently being exciting enough to draw a crowd? It was such a huge huge hugely pointless argument, and can't at all be seen as interesting, as they insult each others masculinity and use abelist language。 One person later used the derogatory F word too, and I guess in this future they still due shit like that。 Sad。 Eventually we do get to the very very cringeworthy conversation done via text between the hero and the love interest。 It is so painfully cringey。 I think it was supposed to do that。 But it went further。 It went really awkward the amount of times the word female is used, instead of something more natural like woman or lady。 And then he does specify with some anti-trans rhetoric。 Can't cheer on such an asshole for a book。 Nope。Anyways, I heard the sequel was worse。 Said by people who liked the first one。 So I can't wait to see how much of a fire that one is too。 。。。more

This one slid right in my top 5 before the year comes to an end。 HOLY BELLS。 So adventurous and fun!!! Underdog vs。 big corporation? A VR utopia?? Yes and yes!! So many exclamation marks but was so needed as an escape from work overload and being sick。 LOVE U WADE WATTS!

I recently watched the movie and loved it。。。so as is my M。O。, I wanted to read the book。 Surprisingly, the book and movie are really different。 They have many similar elements and characters but aside from the main theme, the plot is quite different。 Almost felt like a bonus because of those differences and what I was expecting。 From a plot perspective, I actually preferred the movie。 But regardless, this was a fun and easy read; what a cool imagination。

I really really love this book。 I watched the movie that was made of this book and I loved the movie right away, so I thought that I want to read the book, just to look if it’s like the movie, but it turned out, that the book is so different than the movie。 I like both the book and the movie, but I think that the movie could have been so much better if the producers would have made a movie like the book。

i hereby declare this book worth the hype

I read this out loud to my daughter (20s) and mother (90s) and we all thoroughly enjoyed it。 The characters are interesting, the hunt is intriguing, and the 80s references are of course endearing。 We watched all the music videos (after I burst into song with each lyric in text) as well as the Schoolhouse Rock! ones。 My mother really wasn't paying attention to what I was watching back in the 80s, but she was delighted to discover these all now。 Who would recommend this book to?Gamers, Gen Xers, V I read this out loud to my daughter (20s) and mother (90s) and we all thoroughly enjoyed it。 The characters are interesting, the hunt is intriguing, and the 80s references are of course endearing。 We watched all the music videos (after I burst into song with each lyric in text) as well as the Schoolhouse Rock! ones。 My mother really wasn't paying attention to what I was watching back in the 80s, but she was delighted to discover these all now。 Who would recommend this book to?Gamers, Gen Xers, VR-curious and anyone who likes a good riddle to solve。 。。。more

This book dives into gaming in an easy way that allowed me to follow the storyline as well as pick up some video game jargon。 The deeper idea of the alter- reality is constant on your mind as you read。 The challenges we face socially connecting with people also makes this book more than a kids adventure tale。

I really REALLY wanted to like this book。 Unfortunately, the writing is so pretentious that the protagonist is completely unlikeable, and I found myself wanting him to fail on multiple occasions。
