Summary

This unforgettable novel puts human faces on the Syrian war with the immigrant story of a beekeeper, his wife, and the triumph of spirit when the world becomes unrecognizable。

Nuri is a beekeeper and Afra, his wife, is an artist。 Mornings, Nuri rises early to hear the call to prayer before driving to his hives in the countryside。 On weekends, Afra sells her colorful landscape paintings at the open-air market。 They live a simple life, rich in family and friends, in the hills of the beautiful Syrian city of Aleppo--until the unthinkable happens。 When all they love is destroyed by war, Nuri knows they have no choice except to leave their home。 But escaping Syria will be no easy task: Afra has lost her sight, leaving Nuri to navigate her grief as well as a perilous journey through Turkey and Greece toward an uncertain future in Britain。

Nuri is sustained only by the knowledge that waiting for them is his cousin Mustafa, who has started an apiary in Yorkshire and is teaching fellow refugees beekeeping。 As Nuri and Afra travel through a broken world, they must confront not only the pain of their own unspeakable loss but dangers that would overwhelm even the bravest souls。 Above all, they must make the difficult journey back to each other, a path once so familiar yet rendered foreign by the heartache of displacement。

It's hard to say how true to life this work of fiction is but the author did spend time in Athens volunteering with a charity for refugees and she says the people wanted their stories told- this is a blend of many she listened to while in Athens。It is beautifully read by Art Malik and he makes you feel Nouri's pain as he reads the story。I think this book would certainly make you think a bit more sympathetically towards those refugees who are trying to make it to the UK。I have worked for a charit It's hard to say how true to life this work of fiction is but the author did spend time in Athens volunteering with a charity for refugees and she says the people wanted their stories told- this is a blend of many she listened to while in Athens。It is beautifully read by Art Malik and he makes you feel Nouri's pain as he reads the story。I think this book would certainly make you think a bit more sympathetically towards those refugees who are trying to make it to the UK。I have worked for a charity that supported people with preschool children and two of those families were seeking asylum。 Their stories were pretty horrific and once they were here the system takes forever to process their claims and appeals。I found the book very moving and I think it is a story that everyone should read just to get some idea of what some refugees go through before they get to the UK。 。。。more

So moving and heartbreaking。 Anyone who has an opinion on refugees needs to read this book。 Really felt like it was the authors personal journey, was so informative and descriptive。 I loved the way the chapters changed too with the same last and first word。

I look at refugees differently now, I use to think they were opportunists and I some how dehumanized them。 TBOA changed that, they are real people, like me and my family and should be helped。

Ok just binge-read this in bed in a single morning/afternoon and now I feel SO deflated

I read this book as part of my friends book club。 This story was as much about different peoples coping mechanisms to trauma as the story of how Nuri and Afra made their long, circuitous and dangerous flight from Aleppo and Assad's regime to the UK。 The story presents both the best and worst of people, opportunist looking to make a profit and humanitarians attempting to alleviate suffering whether refugee or those around them。 When we hear about refugees, that's often the defining adjective for I read this book as part of my friends book club。 This story was as much about different peoples coping mechanisms to trauma as the story of how Nuri and Afra made their long, circuitous and dangerous flight from Aleppo and Assad's regime to the UK。 The story presents both the best and worst of people, opportunist looking to make a profit and humanitarians attempting to alleviate suffering whether refugee or those around them。 When we hear about refugees, that's often the defining adjective for the person and yet it's important to remember that these people had lives, homes, families and dreams just like any of us before external circumstances took all these descriptors away and replaced them with the singular "refugee"。 。。。more

We think we know。 We have our opinions, our views, our prejudices。 But we dont know。 Not really。 Not at all。 We need stories like this to open our eyes。 To see the things we dont want to see。 To see the world behind our pink glasses。 Stories like this should be told。 Stories like this should be known。 Stories like this should make us better people and make us more helpful, more kind, more involved。 Please read this book。 Its heartbreaking, its honest and real。 It will show you the other side of We think we know。 We have our opinions, our views, our prejudices。 But we dont know。 Not really。 Not at all。 We need stories like this to open our eyes。 To see the things we dont want to see。 To see the world behind our pink glasses。 Stories like this should be told。 Stories like this should be known。 Stories like this should make us better people and make us more helpful, more kind, more involved。 Please read this book。 Its heartbreaking, its honest and real。 It will show you the other side of the refugee stories。 The human one。 It will make you cry just as well as make angry at humans and the horrors they're able to do。 But it will make you open your eyes and maybe change, just a little。 。。。more

I liked it well enough。 It explores an event and people I know little about。 The characters feel real and their experiences are valid and believable

Heartbreaking。 The overwhelming nature of the topic is handled with care and subtly。 Painful acts of war which could’ve easily been made authentically graphic or gratuitous were powerfully understated。 The eves-dropping of late night parent-child conversations and hidden activities in the woods we’re known without being grotesque。 The slow revelation of post traumatic stress responses by the main characters was disorientating but also cushioned by snippets of hope and beauty。 A beautiful telling Heartbreaking。 The overwhelming nature of the topic is handled with care and subtly。 Painful acts of war which could’ve easily been made authentically graphic or gratuitous were powerfully understated。 The eves-dropping of late night parent-child conversations and hidden activities in the woods we’re known without being grotesque。 The slow revelation of post traumatic stress responses by the main characters was disorientating but also cushioned by snippets of hope and beauty。 A beautiful telling of a shocking history。 。。。more

Brilliantly sad, deeply moving and ultimately full of hope, this book touches the core of grief and loss at the heart of so many immigrant stories。 It's a story of death and destruction, of beauty and vision, of truth and illusion, of love and pain, of the heart of evil and the power of hope。 It's a beautiful, powerful book。 Brilliantly sad, deeply moving and ultimately full of hope, this book touches the core of grief and loss at the heart of so many immigrant stories。 It's a story of death and destruction, of beauty and vision, of truth and illusion, of love and pain, of the heart of evil and the power of hope。 It's a beautiful, powerful book。 。。。more

Great story to [provide a perspective on those who are fleeing the civil war-torn area of Syria。 The story os very moving and i appreciate how it reflected the emotions of those refugees。 I did find the writing style to be a bit off tempo which made the text a bit choppy。

India Braver

Well written but I wish the characters other than the main one were more fleshed out cuz while his narrative is definitely interesting, I found myself caring more about the others/

Beautiful。 I struggled with the style at times but my persistence was worth it。

Be prepared to cry as this book is a rollercoaster of emotions。 How it ends was good but through it all, it was full of imagery and surprise。 If I was going to tell a friend about this book and why it moved me, I wouldn’t be able to tell anything but it’s about Nuri and his struggles getting out of Syria as a refugee。But I have to stop there because the beauty of the book is in the details and what he sees。

Such a moving book。

Very moving, a terrific story telling the plight of a displaced Syrian refugee。 While ISIS, Daesh, Taliban, rebels and Assad are all fighting tooth and nail against each other little thought is given to the people trying to escape conflict。My father was with the 2/15th battalion in WW2 and hot on the tail of fleeing German infantry and spent time in Aleppo, and described it as a beautiful city rich in culture。 That was 80 years ago, the conflict continues。

Olivia

Moving story of Syrian refugee whose experiences no doubt are not unique。 It is perhaps because I knew it would be a moving series of losses that takes away some of the power of the story and in having the narrator telling the story in retrospect, thus knowing they survived, also lessens some of the impact of the story。 Nonetheless, good book for anyone who resents refugees。

Kat

An important read about trauma, refugees, and hope。

I went between loving and hating this book。 Interesting topic about Syrian refugees trying to get to the UK to live。 Especially significant in light of today's refugee situation。 The two main characters were interesting, but so much of the story came from the man's imagination that it was difficult to tell what was real and what he made up。 Interesting information about bees! A moving and interesting novel on many levels particularly the alienation of people who by no fault of their own were in the way。
