Summary

#1 New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Wein delivers an exhilarating, unmissable thriller that finds three very different young adults united to decode a secret that could turn the tide of World War II。 Now in paperback。

1940。 Facing a seemingly endless war, fifteen-year-old Louisa Adair wants to fight back, make a difference, do something-anything to escape the Blitz and the ghosts of her parents, who were killed by enemy action。 But when she accepts a position caring for an elderly German woman in the small village of Windyedge, Scotland, it hardly seems like a meaningful contribution。 Still, the war feels closer than ever in Windyedge, where Ellen McEwen, a volunteer driver with the Royal Air Force, and Jamie Beaufort-Stuart, a flight leader for the 648 Squadron, are facing a barrage of unbreakable code and enemy attacks they can't anticipate。

Their paths converge when a German pilot lands in Windyedge under mysterious circumstances and plants a key that leads Louisa to an unparalleled discovery: an Enigma machine that translates German code。 Louisa, Ellen, and Jamie must work together to unravel a puzzle that could turn the tide of the war--but doing so will put them directly in the cross-hairs of the enemy。

Featuring beloved characters from Code Name Verity and The Pearl Thief, as well as a remarkable new voice, this brilliant, breathlessly plotted novel by award-winning author Elizabeth Wein is a must-read。

I know that the author is categorized as a y a author but these hold up for adults very well! I loved code name Verity so was ready to try another of her books。 Great character development with interesting little nuggets of History!

I’ve waited SO long to read this and OH was it worth it。I loved Louisa and Ellen, of course, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t reading this book primarily for Jamie (and Julie。 Always for Julie)。 I love him, my son。 He broke my heart the whole book。 And JULIE!! Oh, my child。 This book was so bittersweet the whole way through because of everything I know about them but OH it made it so meaningful。 I just。 I loved it so much。

A nice change from my usual book。 Nicely thought out。 I listened as an audiobook, the way it is written would work well if reading I am sure。 Unfortunately it didn't work quite as well on the audio book, this is most likely the reading more than the book itself。 A nice change from my usual book。 Nicely thought out。 I listened as an audiobook, the way it is written would work well if reading I am sure。 Unfortunately it didn't work quite as well on the audio book, this is most likely the reading more than the book itself。 。。。more

Love this book! Elizabeth Wein is one of my favorite authors and she did an amazing job with this book。 It's one that was enhanced by having read the other books in the "series" (I'm unsure what else to call it), but someone who has not read anything else by her would also be able to fully enjoy it。 I really liked the fleshing out of Jamie's character, in addition to the new characters introduced。 Overall a good book, a little slow in some parts but a nice read - 4。5 stars。 Love this book! An intricate perspective showing WW2 from multiple perspectives - A fighter pilot trying to lead his team and keep them alive。 A female volunteer who is doing her part ferrying men to and from the airbase。 A black woman whose family has been killed and has moved to Scotland to try and find her own way。 This book also features the life of a woman hiding her German past and a German who has defected passing secrets to the Allies to aid their efforts and whilst these characters do not have their ow An intricate perspective showing WW2 from multiple perspectives - A fighter pilot trying to lead his team and keep them alive。 A female volunteer who is doing her part ferrying men to and from the airbase。 A black woman whose family has been killed and has moved to Scotland to try and find her own way。 This book also features the life of a woman hiding her German past and a German who has defected passing secrets to the Allies to aid their efforts and whilst these characters do not have their own perspectives their stories and struggles are covered nonetheless。 I enjoyed the fact that this historical fiction was not focused on the front lines, instead it is set in a more remote area of Scotland which gave this book a fresh view into what life was like for many, rather than the well-covered high-stakes events that the genre covers more regularly。 This is less suitable for those who prefer an action-based plot as the book has more to do with the human-side of events than the Enigma machine and it’s aids in the war effort。 。。。more

received an arc in exchange for a reviewdnf’d it about midway through。 I thought that maybe(?!) historical ya fiction might be for me but it’s not。 I know this is not at all helpful, but if you don’t trust yourself with historical fiction I wouldn’t recommend it。

Takes some time for this story to get going but once it does it’s well worth the read。

A prequel to ‘Code Name Verity,’ this is a less dramatic book but still very readable。 An enigma machine plays a role in this book, but what I value most is that Wein doesn’t underplay the daily trials and the real horrors of life during WWII, especially for RAF pilots, in this case those who flew the Blenheim bombers。

CLW

Enjoyable YA fiction that weaves multiple historical facts into an engaging story。

Margaret

Not as intriguing as some of her other books

A swift read, multiple narrators and interesting plot。 Like her other books, this one is satisfying in a light way。Recommend to adult level readers who read WW2 novels。

While not as compelling as Code name Verity (this is a prequel), still Wein develops compelling characters and engaging plots。 I had some trouble keeping the women as separate voices at times, but still, I found them to be quite likeable。

DisappointingThis book had all the right stuff but failed to meet expectations for me。 Too much time spent on the realities of the 40s。 More time about the Enigma game would have been more interesting。

Enjoyed the story but didn't particularly like the format of writing by jumping from character to character。 Sometimes hard to remember who was talking。 Enjoyed the story but didn't particularly like the format of writing by jumping from character to character。 Sometimes hard to remember who was talking。 。。。more

This was a quick and enjoyable WWII YA fiction。 Super clean, appropriate for middle school and up。 No romance。 Just cutting and pasting some notes I made as I read 。。 Loved Louisa's enthusiasm and pure joy and excitement when they go up to fly, about the enigma machine, everything。 Didn't realize so much discrimination over being Scottish? (Ellen)Jane - seems stereotypical role in the book, but still love her spunkNancy Campbell - same。 Tough shell, helping interior。Phyllis - same lol。 Goody two This was a quick and enjoyable WWII YA fiction。 Super clean, appropriate for middle school and up。 No romance。 Just cutting and pasting some notes I made as I read 。。 Loved Louisa's enthusiasm and pure joy and excitement when they go up to fly, about the enigma machine, everything。 Didn't realize so much discrimination over being Scottish? I love Elizabeth Wein's writing。 I enjoyed this book, but it definitely moved much slower than most of her others。 Requires a patient reader, and, although it could definitely stand alone, will probably appeal mostly to those already invested in the Code Name Verity world。 I love Elizabeth Wein's writing。 I enjoyed this book, but it definitely moved much slower than most of her others。 Requires a patient reader, and, although it could definitely stand alone, will probably appeal mostly to those already invested in the Code Name Verity world。 。。。more

Meh。 Lacked the drama of Code Name Verity, and I couldn’t really get into the characters。 Just ok。

So far, I love this book because it is about a girl who faces many challenges in the middle of the second world war。 I can't wait to read on further to see what the future of this book holds。 So far, I love this book because it is about a girl who faces many challenges in the middle of the second world war。 I can't wait to read on further to see what the future of this book holds。 。。。more

It's been awhile since I've read any of the others in this series, so I didn't recognize Jamie and Ellen right off。 I don't think there was enough of a voice difference between the three narrators, as I sometimes forgot who was speaking while I was reading and had to flip back a few times to see who it was。 I did like the narrative for the most part, even though it's very much a Young Adult book in the sense that the young adults are doing most of the amazing things, while the seasoned adults (w It's been awhile since I've read any of the others in this series, so I didn't recognize Jamie and Ellen right off。 I don't think there was enough of a voice difference between the three narrators, as I sometimes forgot who was speaking while I was reading and had to flip back a few times to see who it was。 I did like the narrative for the most part, even though it's very much a Young Adult book in the sense that the young adults are doing most of the amazing things, while the seasoned adults (who really should have been doing all the amazing stuff, like leading a squadron) were just there to help the teens shine。 。。。more

I have to admit that Code Name Verity is my favorite in this series but, as you can see by my 4 stars, this one was fairly close。 In this one, it was wonderful to run across some familiar characters from Code Name Verity (one of the narrators in this was a more minor character in that other book) but this one also had some wonderful new characters of its own。 A few of the characters, including two of the major ones, have attributes about them that make them the targets of prejudice。 It was nice I have to admit that Code Name Verity is my favorite in this series but, as you can see by my 4 stars, this one was fairly close。 In this one, it was wonderful to run across some familiar characters from Code Name Verity (one of the narrators in this was a more minor character in that other book) but this one also had some wonderful new characters of its own。 A few of the characters, including two of the major ones, have attributes about them that make them the targets of prejudice。 It was nice to have that representation but also the acknowledgment that things were not easy for them during this time period。 Also, (slight spoiler ahead) it was interesting to have a character who was the equivalent "passing" (people assumed they were a part of the "majority") but they revealed how they were different in order to stick up for a friend (and had some fallout from that)。If you are a fan of WWII books, this is a title not to be missed。 Since Code Named Verity was published first, that is the one I read first。 I think, as splendid as I thought that book was, it may have been even more splendid if I would have been able to read them in chronological order because I would have gotten to know certain characters better before they faced the challenges they encounter in that book。I highly recommend the whole series as audiobooks, they are all excellently done。 。。。more

I enjoyed reading this novel, and thought that it would be suitable for Year 6 pupils with strong reading abilities。 The story itself was laden with beautiful descriptive passages which really made the scenery feel alive in the mind’s eye。 Wein’s characters had a depth to them which drew the reader further into what was already a gripping war story。 There were some very poignant emotional scenes mixed with ferocious action which would be very useful for keeping a reader engaged。 I did think that I enjoyed reading this novel, and thought that it would be suitable for Year 6 pupils with strong reading abilities。 The story itself was laden with beautiful descriptive passages which really made the scenery feel alive in the mind’s eye。 Wein’s characters had a depth to them which drew the reader further into what was already a gripping war story。 There were some very poignant emotional scenes mixed with ferocious action which would be very useful for keeping a reader engaged。 I did think that whilst the language in the book was not out of reach for a Year 6 reader, some of the language and scenarios were perhaps a little adult。 Whilst I am sure it would not phase all 11 year olds, I would perhaps not suggest it as a class reader。 Although the historical accuracy, later explained in the author’s notes, makes this book brilliant for child readers, it is the nuanced portrayal of race and xenophobia which makes this book such a compelling and important read。 。。。more

Pretty slow read for me at first since not much seemed to be happening, but it turned out to be such a good book。 It follows the story of three different characters: Jamie, Ellen, and Louisa。 When a German pilot leaves a decoding machine behind in the Limehouse pub where Louisa is staying, she finds it。 With the help of Jane, the old German woman she looks after, she is able to use it to decode German messages, which she passes on to Ellen and Jamie。 It is such an incredible story, and I loved i Pretty slow read for me at first since not much seemed to be happening, but it turned out to be such a good book。 It follows the story of three different characters: Jamie, Ellen, and Louisa。 When a German pilot leaves a decoding machine behind in the Limehouse pub where Louisa is staying, she finds it。 With the help of Jane, the old German woman she looks after, she is able to use it to decode German messages, which she passes on to Ellen and Jamie。 It is such an incredible story, and I loved it so much。 。。。more

Well written, fast-paced, intriguing story with a motley cast of characters who come together in astonishing ways。 Set in northern England during WWII and evocative of the daily life of those times。
