Summary

Referred to by superstitious actors as 'the Scottish play', William Shakespeare's Macbeth is a tragedy in which appalling earthly crimes have lasting supernatural repercussions。 This Penguin Shakespeare edition is edited by George Hunter with an introduction by Carol Rutter。

'By the pricking of my thumbs,
Something wicked this way comes'

Promised a golden future as ruler of Scotland by three sinister witches, and spurred on by his wife, Macbeth murders King Duncan to ensure his ambitions come true。 But he soon learns the meaning of terror - killing once, he must kill again and again, and the dead return to haunt him。 A story of war, witchcraft and bloodshed, Macbeth also depicts the relationship between husbands and wives, and the risks they are prepared to take to achieve their desires。

This book contains a general introduction to Shakespeare's life and Elizabethan theatre, a separate introduction to Macbeth, a chronology, suggestions for further reading, an essay discussing performance options on both stage and screen, and a commentary。

William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was born to John Shakespeare and Mary Arden some time in late April 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon。 He wrote about 38 plays (the precise number is uncertain), many of which are regarded as the most exceptional works of drama ever produced, including Romeo and Juliet (1595), Henry V (1599), Hamlet (1601), Othello (1604), King Lear (1606) and Macbeth (1606), as well as a collection of 154 sonnets, which number among the most profound and influential love-poetry in English。

If you enjoyed Macbeth, you might like Hamlet, also available in Penguin Shakespeare。

Not much to say about this that hasn't been said but, for me, barring perhaps Hamlet, this is Shakespeare's finest tragedy。 The addition of the mystical in the "Weird Sisters," I think, adds a profound ambiguity to the proceedings, leading audiences to question the very nature of everything they witness over the course of the play。 Wonderfully drawn characters like Macbeth and Lady Macbeth captivate, and the play houses some of Shakespeare's best scenes and soliloquies。 Not much to say about this that hasn't been said but, for me, barring perhaps Hamlet, this is Shakespeare's finest tragedy。 The addition of the mystical in the "Weird Sisters," I think, adds a profound ambiguity to the proceedings, leading audiences to question the very nature of everything they witness over the course of the play。 Wonderfully drawn characters like Macbeth and Lady Macbeth captivate, and the play houses some of Shakespeare's best scenes and soliloquies。 。。。more

4。5 stars。 I was pleasently surprised at how much I enjoyed Macbeth- I think it's probably my favorite Shakespeare work that I've read so far。 I thought the plot was really interesting as it followed Macbeth's downward spiral of both violence and paranoia, and I thought the plot twist of (view spoiler)[ Macduff being "cut out" of his mother's womb instead of being traditionally "born of a woman" was creative and unique。 (hide spoiler)] I also really enjoyed having interesting characters like La 4。5 stars。 I was pleasently surprised at how much I enjoyed Macbeth- I think it's probably my favorite Shakespeare work that I've read so far。 I thought the plot was really interesting as it followed Macbeth's downward spiral of both violence and paranoia, and I thought the plot twist of (view spoiler)[ Macduff being "cut out" of his mother's womb instead of being traditionally "born of a woman" was creative and unique。 (hide spoiler)] I also really enjoyed having interesting characters like Lady Macbeth and the Weird Sisters, and funny scenes like Lady Macduff and her son's conversation。 I would definitely read this again。 。。。more

Happened to a buddy of mine。 Wish I could go back in time and give Shakespeare an urban dictionary so Lady Macbeth can just call him a pussy。 "The masculine urge to murder for power。" Happened to a buddy of mine。 Wish I could go back in time and give Shakespeare an urban dictionary so Lady Macbeth can just call him a pussy。 "The masculine urge to murder for power。" 。。。more

I enjoyed the plot, amazed by the strong presentation of destiny。 Meanwhile, the misogyny in Shakespeare’s writing annoyed me so much, between the conflict feelings I gave it 3⭐️。 白色巨塔应该是有借鉴麦克白的。

this took me literal months to get into even though it is, famously, good。 the thing is that the vibes are impeccable and the plot really pops off but outside of the most frequently quoted bits, of which there are admittedly many, the rest of the language didn't do a whole lot for me。 but it's also been ages since I read any Shakespeare so maybe I'm just out of practice this took me literal months to get into even though it is, famously, good。 the thing is that the vibes are impeccable and the plot really pops off but outside of the most frequently quoted bits, of which there are admittedly many, the rest of the language didn't do a whole lot for me。 but it's also been ages since I read any Shakespeare so maybe I'm just out of practice 。。。more

read this one for school, but ended up loving it。 definitely my favorite Shakespeare work。 it had all the juicy stuff and was very fast paced(in a good way)。 i would 10/10 recommend reading it。 my favorite part was realizing all the Macbeth references in different media。 suddenly everything connects。

Maybe I would’ve enjoyed this book more if I understood it, but unfortunately, I can’t understand Shakespeare’s language no matter how much a I read it。 Macbeth was very dramatic and interesting though。
