Only finished it for a bookclub discussion。 Too much detail, too much YA , too obscure。 What was I thinking?

I finished this last month, but this was not my favorite of the author’s books。 I may be hitting a wall with the near future dystopian novel, especially given how dystopian the present feels lately, so, while I have loved other of Ishiguro’s novels—most recently the Buried Giant, this one left me cold。

。。。more

This book was weird。 I don’t know what all the hype was about。 It wasn’t an enjoyable read。 A simplistic, futuristic view of AI that felt underwhelming。

Clever story with interesting enough characters and a nice sci fi angle ala never let me go

I tried the audiobook。 The voice actress was good。 I liked the beginning of the story, and I thought it had real potential。 I like books about cyborgs, machine learning, AI, downloading one's 'consciousness' into a machine, 。。。 But this book fell on the low side of the interesting scale。 Scene after scene was boring and the boringness was drawn out。 I don't know if the author thought he was illustrating poignant reflections of aspects of life for us to contemplate, but I didn't find any deep mus I tried the audiobook。 The voice actress was good。 I liked the beginning of the story, and I thought it had real potential。 I like books about cyborgs, machine learning, AI, downloading one's 'consciousness' into a machine, 。。。 But this book fell on the low side of the interesting scale。 Scene after scene was boring and the boringness was drawn out。 I don't know if the author thought he was illustrating poignant reflections of aspects of life for us to contemplate, but I didn't find any deep musings in these boring scenes。 I liked the setting of the AF shop。 I liked Klara well enough, but, since she was robotic, she really didn't have enough of a personality to fall in love with。 But, Ishiguro couldn't have made her any other way, given what she was, so I think he did a good job with her character。 Josie, meh, I could take her or leave her。 One thing I found annoying with Klara was that she was 'smart' enough to figure things out - that was one of her special attributes。 And yet she couldn't figure out proper pronouns? She'd be talking to Rick, for example, and instead of saying "I want to help you and Josie with your plan" she says "I want to help Rick and Josie with their plan"。 Or she'd be talking to Josie and she'd say "Is Josie angry?" I cringed every time that happened, which was a lot。 On the plus side, I think Ishiguro developed his characters well。 They were all believable。 So, he gets a couple of stars for that。 。。。more

I thought it was a beautiful tale! Klara’s kindness and curiosity brought a warmth to the story, and I felt as though I could really feel myself in the story when the author depicted the field and the barn。

This seems to be quite a polarizing book。 Everyone either loving it or hating it。 But "Klara and the Sun" did not really elicit such strong emotions in me。 I was not blown away in any way。 Yet, I did not dislike it either。 I fell squarely in the middle。 I was mostly confused throughout the book。 It turns out there are certain theories online about the story and its ending。 I have read through some of them, but then I was thinking: if I wanted solve a Sudoku I would have solved a Sudoku, I did no This seems to be quite a polarizing book。 Everyone either loving it or hating it。 But "Klara and the Sun" did not really elicit such strong emotions in me。 I was not blown away in any way。 Yet, I did not dislike it either。 I fell squarely in the middle。 I was mostly confused throughout the book。 It turns out there are certain theories online about the story and its ending。 I have read through some of them, but then I was thinking: if I wanted solve a Sudoku I would have solved a Sudoku, I did not need to read a novel to feel like solving a Sudoku。 Oh well。 If you liked "Never Let Me Go," then this one is for you。 If not, still, give it a shot and see it for yourself。 Overall, it's hard for me to know what to think of this book because it didn't say much。 There was a lot of potential, but the story ended up only scratching the surface。 It feels unfinished, with a fluffy slapdash ending that didn't even come close to addressing any of the worthwhile topics in here。 。。。more

If you were ever like, “I wish they would make a futuristic robot version of The Giving Tree” then this is your book。 It has the innocence of Piranesi (read that) mixed with a Black Mirror episode。 It’s a slow go, but I never tired of Klara’s AI robo voice and human observations。 This authors stories are always special, even if his stories sometimes feels like it took the longer route, it’s still worth the extra time for the overall feeling he leaves you with。

Sometimes better in idea than execution, but very thought provoking ethics and not too dystopian。 I liked the reimagined symbolism for the sun。 Ultimately, Klara is being asked to simulate the dynamic *continuation* of a life, not a static time-capsule。。。this sort of thing would occur to an AI right away。

Apart from the fact I didn't enjoy the book -rather boring- I did wonder how Klara arrived at Josies house, as in part two it says: 'I’d never been inside a car before, but Rosa and I had watched so many people get in and out of vehicles, their postures and maneuvers, how they sat once the vehicles began to move, that there was nothing that came as a surprise to me as I navigated into my rear seat。' Apart from the fact I didn't enjoy the book -rather boring- I did wonder how Klara arrived at Josies house, as in part two it says: 'I’d never been inside a car before, but Rosa and I had watched so many people get in and out of vehicles, their postures and maneuvers, how they sat once the vehicles began to move, that there was nothing that came as a surprise to me as I navigated into my rear seat。' 。。。more

Overall a disappointment - so much let unsaid。 I get that that was the author's point but it left me feeling like I was cheated out of at least knowing more about and caring about any of the characters because I had no clue what their motivations were or their actions meant。 It just seemed like we should be privy to a little more information so we could care what happened。 Overall a disappointment - so much let unsaid。 I get that that was the author's point but it left me feeling like I was cheated out of at least knowing more about and caring about any of the characters because I had no clue what their motivations were or their actions meant。 It just seemed like we should be privy to a little more information so we could care what happened。 。。。more

This is my first Ishiguro book。 I was so impressed with his writing。 It flowed beautifully to tell the story of an "artificial friend" (AF) who is a companion for a young girl, Josie, who is ill。 Josie is genetically modified to be gifted or "lifted" and her friend Rick is not。 Ishiguro gives us glimpses into a futuristic world that is segregated and isolated。 Throughout the book, the AF, with her myopic view of the world and limited understanding of it, is trying to help Josie get healthy again This is my first Ishiguro book。 I was so impressed with his writing。 It flowed beautifully to tell the story of an "artificial friend" (AF) who is a companion for a young girl, Josie, who is ill。 Josie is genetically modified to be gifted or "lifted" and her friend Rick is not。 Ishiguro gives us glimpses into a futuristic world that is segregated and isolated。 Throughout the book, the AF, with her myopic view of the world and limited understanding of it, is trying to help Josie get healthy again。 Ishiguro leaves much to the imagination in his story - allowing the reader to create the world view from each character。 The question of "love" and its many meanings comes up often as a theme of the book as well。 I enjoyed this novel for the writing and for the permission to imagine within this novel。 。。。more

This novel had a very strong start, but the ending felt rushed。 I was also confused about the very child-like and simple writing mixed with the adult themes, wondering who the target audience was supposed to be (apparently Mr。 Ishiguro first wrote this as a children's book, but then decided to re-write this for adults)。 The world-building was also pretty lacking。 For example, why exactly parents bought AFs for their children- were they meant to be teachers, nannies, friends, what? At first this seems like a well-written but predictable novel of an artificially intelligent human replica, and how it will fare interacting with real people。 It is that, certainly, (well, perhaps not the 'predictable' part) but because the writer is Ishiguro, it is much, much more。 Since I've finished reading it, I've tried to sort out my feelings for this book。 Upon completing it I was left with a beautiful feeling of peace and contentment, as if I had witnessed something of a miracle; a glimp At first this seems like a well-written but predictable novel of an artificially intelligent human replica, and how it will fare interacting with real people。 It is that, certainly, (well, perhaps not the 'predictable' part) but because the writer is Ishiguro, it is much, much more。 Since I've finished reading it, I've tried to sort out my feelings for this book。 Upon completing it I was left with a beautiful feeling of peace and contentment, as if I had witnessed something of a miracle; a glimpse of the beauty of human love and God's grace。 As I reflect upon it, I grew to value the decision of making the narrator a non-human, a supposedly objective observer, telling a tale that a human narrator might misinterpret or weigh too heavily in one direction or another。 Of course, one wonders how objective Klara really is, yet she clearly seems the wisest character in the book。 Since she was created by people, as are children, she might not be as "artificial" as people think。I'll keep thinking about this story, its wonderful characters, and the marvelous choices Ishiguro made in setting up his scenes。 You really can't ask more of a novel than that。 。。。more

So, so good。 I really enjoyed this, and tore through it in one sitting。 This book felt like a companion to Never Let Me Go, in that it touched upon many of the same questions and themes, and asks us to consider what it means to…not necessarily be human, but to have a mind, to have consciousness and selfhood and emotions。 It’s hard to describe more without spoilers, but it gave me a lot to think about。 This is not a book for science fiction fans who want to see the usual tropes explored in novel So, so good。 I really enjoyed this, and tore through it in one sitting。 This book felt like a companion to Never Let Me Go, in that it touched upon many of the same questions and themes, and asks us to consider what it means to…not necessarily be human, but to have a mind, to have consciousness and selfhood and emotions。 It’s hard to describe more without spoilers, but it gave me a lot to think about。 This is not a book for science fiction fans who want to see the usual tropes explored in novel ways; it’s more literary fiction / philosophy of science。 In an era where humans can literally read and write their own source code, this book asks: can we ever understand our world to the extent that all things are predictable and explainable, or will certain things always remain ineffable / beyond our grasp and understanding? 。。。more

What a compelling and interesting read。 I found myself liking Klara more and more with every page。 Even though she was artificial, she had such humor and such humanity。 Sometimes more than the humans around her。 I was fascinated sensing her world through through her senses。 I especially enjoyed seeing people and nature as shapes。 Making Klara the narrator I thought was brilliant。

I couldn’t put this book down up until about halfway and then I could barely pick it up to finish it。 I guess I expected too much from all the hype over it。 I was wanting something that made me feel positive in a terribly negative time but this book reaffirmed the negativity of the present。 It is brilliantly written and my removal of one star is merely because of personal preference and opinion。 YMMV。

A great premise with an odd ending (no spoilers)。 This story is told from the POV of an artificial intelligence being - an AF - whose purpose is to be a companion to a preteen or teenager。 She is selected by a family with a daughter, but there are some issues in the household, and this makes up the meat of the plot。 Near the end, as the plot takes some weird turns, and it feels like the writing becomes stilted。 There is an integral scene outside of a theater that was so weird and hard for me to A great premise with an odd ending (no spoilers)。 This story is told from the POV of an artificial intelligence being - an AF - whose purpose is to be a companion to a preteen or teenager。 She is selected by a family with a daughter, but there are some issues in the household, and this makes up the meat of the plot。 Near the end, as the plot takes some weird turns, and it feels like the writing becomes stilted。 There is an integral scene outside of a theater that was so weird and hard for me to follow (maybe this was on purpose) and really changed my view of the book, for the worse。 Because of the writing and the topic, it's a book worth reading, but the ending was。。。。strange。 。。。more
