This looked like the perfect Christmas thriller to read this year。 I did really enjoy it, especially the suspense and eerie setting, which was a seemingly harmless nature reserve。 With it being dark and snowy it turned it into a hunting ground! I loved that。 You get to read from all 7 character's POV, which, to be honest, was a lot to take in。 But I didn't see the twists coming, which is always good in a thriller。 The suspense built steadily and I enjoyed the writing style and pace。 It wasn't sl This looked like the perfect Christmas thriller to read this year。 I did really enjoy it, especially the suspense and eerie setting, which was a seemingly harmless nature reserve。 With it being dark and snowy it turned it into a hunting ground! As an ecologist and bird-watcher this book had a setting that I just loved。 Eerie remote wilderness… yes please。 Bird nerd info… give me more。 However, I really disliked many of the characters and found they lacked substance。 Also, the pacing was so slow。 I found myself skimming entire chapters。 Thank you to Netgalley and Avon Books for allowing me to review the arc。

We very quickly find out that every single one of them is hiding a secret that soon about to be found out。 This was my first book by Nell Pattison but it certainly won’t be the last, I thoroughly enjoyed this one and Nell’s writing style was certainly a big factor in that。 I found the plot flowed nicely from start to finish and I did find myself invested in which of the “friends” was the one doing the killing。 The story is told from the different friends POVs so we got some great insight into each of the characters and the twists and revelations in this book were incredible, I didn’t see a lot of them coming which kept me even more hooked because it was a great guessing game for me。 And even more importantly, I learnt a lot about cochlear implants and living with hearing loss, I love that Nell is using her platform to help educate people on hearing loss, I don’t think I’ve read many books that feature hard of hearing/hearing loss characters。 If you’re a fan of crime, mystery and thriller books then this is definitely one you’ll want to pick up! I think the ending will possibly inspire mixed feelings as it kind of leaves you with an unresolved feeling, but having said that, I think it was exactly the ending the book needed。Overall I had a blast with this one and would definitely check out the author's other work! 。。。more

Exactly。 Mix in some harsh snowy weather, no phone connection with the outside world, an argument between two sisters, and the consequent stupid decision to split up to find the quickest way to contact authorities, and the game is on。 With suspicion running high among all the members of the group, this was a very atmospheric read。 I personally found it a bit predictable, but that could well be because I've read too many locked-room mysteries…🙈The setting was what I loved most。 Whenever I get snow, woods, and a murderer on the loose, I can’t seem to resist! 🤭If I had to complain about something it would be that all the characters were rather unpleasant and that the center of the book was a bit repetitive。 Other than that, I can only recommend it to all Locked-Room mystery lovers。 。。。more

Imagine knowing that someone is after you, but you can’t hear them! It’s a locked room mystery in the sense that it’s only the 7 hikers and readers know that the victim and killer must be one of them。 I loved the chance to try and solve the mystery before one of the hikers solved it。 This is a murder mystery, but Pattison does such a phenomenal job crafting her characters that I got more wrapped up in the relationships between the friends than focusing on who it was。 This allowed me to focus on the ‘why’ rather than the ‘who。’ There are many locked room mysteries out there, but this one rises above the rest because it focuses on the deaf community and because of the unique setting。 Pattison was able to place me in the action and allow me to feel the tension and that’s an ability I admire。 The author began losing her hearing in her 20s and now teaches the deaf。 The authenticity she brings to the narrative makes it successful。 She deals with a crime within the deaf community with sensitivity。 Publishes December 9, 2021。 I was gifted this advance copy by Nell Pattison, Avon Books UK, and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review。 。。。more

The rest of them must race to try and save themselves。In all of Pattison’s works there is a character who is deaf。 I absolutely love this because it has taught me so much that I did not know before。 This book was no exception, and I ended up learning so much about cochlear implants! I love this unique take that Pattison uses to raise awareness。 The book follows the points of view of all of the seven group members which I loved。 It added so much depth, and it was clearly marked with who each chapter was linked to。 The chapters were short and the book was fast paced。 However, there was one point where I felt it was getting a little bit too repetitive for me。 I loved the eerie setting and found myself not wanting to put the book down! There were so many twists and cliffhangers I felt like I was continuously on the edge of my seat。 Although I worked out some of the twists I still enjoyed being shocked by the others! Warning: the cliffhangers at the end of chapters may keep you up all night reading ‘just one more chapter’。 I would recommend this to any thriller fans, especially if you fancy something a bit different。 I am so grateful to Avon Books and Nell Pattison for allowing me to read a copy of this book and give my personal thoughts。 。。。more

This was a very good who-done-it。 I felt a bit unnerved walking alone and listening to this in the forest。 Unsettling is a good description。

Hide was the perfect title for this novel。 Its was quickly evident that it wasn’t just about everyone was hiding something。 But also the place this mystery suspense takes place。 How brilliant and every person was mysterious。 This was in my opinion well thought out。 Lots of lurking around every corner, wondering what the heck was going on。 This was a new author to me and I’ve really enjoyed this。 I recommend it and I chose to listen to this book on audio。 To many narrators to mention but the were Hide was the perfect title for this novel。 Its was quickly evident that it wasn’t just about everyone was hiding something。 But also the place this mystery suspense takes place。 How brilliant and every person was mysterious。 This was in my opinion well thought out。 Lots of lurking around every corner, wondering what the heck was going on。 This was a new author to me and I’ve really enjoyed this。 I recommend it and I chose to listen to this book on audio。 To many narrators to mention but the were awesome。 7, yes seven narrators and it was 9 hours and 56 minutes long。 Thanks Avon via Netgalley。 。。。more

I really love the cover, which is what drew me to this book。 And I really liked the setting。 We are in an isolated nature reserve on Boxing Day as seven friends come together for a walk and some bird spotting。 Lauren is the manager of the reserve and so she's opened it up just for them, they've got the whole place to themselves。 But as darkness and snow starts to fall, a gunshot rings out and one of the party is found dead。The book is told from the varying different view points of all the charac I really love the cover, which is what drew me to this book。 And I really liked the setting。 We are in an isolated nature reserve on Boxing Day as seven friends come together for a walk and some bird spotting。 Lauren is the manager of the reserve and so she's opened it up just for them, they've got the whole place to themselves。 But as darkness and snow starts to fall, a gunshot rings out and one of the party is found dead。The book is told from the varying different view points of all the characters, which I enjoyed。 The tension builds up as the remaining members of the group start arguing about the best course of action。 They need to raise the alarm but the visitor centre is over 5 miles away。 So they split up to try and get help (never a good idea!)I loved that disability was being represented, one of the main characters Emily, is deaf。 It was great to read from her point of view and see how her senses were affected by being out in the dark。 And how she was in a world of silence if someone turned there back to her if they were talking。 I felt nervous for her as you realised it was so much harder for her in the surroundings。 I enjoyed the beginning and the ending of this book, but felt it dragged slightly in the middle。 And there were a couple of occasions that didn't make sense, but you just have to go with it, don't question it too much。I've seen from some other reviews that they found the ending a bit controversial, but I LOVED it。 It's what pushed it up to a ⭐⭐⭐⭐ for me。 Totally unexpected and a chilling twist。Thank you to netgalley and the publisher Avon books for an arc of this book。 。。。more

Wanted to love this book as the cover was brilliant and it sounded so good but it was just a chore to read。 So dry and I just couldn’t get into it。 Even 120 pages in nothing was happening。 Too many characters, got confused with them all。 By the end wasn’t invested in the characters and sadly didn’t care。

Full thoughts: https://fictionmajorette。blogspot。com。。。Overall, this book really didn't work for me。 I had such a hard time getting through it and I think it was at least 100 pages too long。 There wasn't anything glaringly bad with it, but the pieces were all just okay and they came together in such a way where the whole was less than the parts。 I really enjoyed the friend group dynamic and found it a bit of a refreshing take on the typical dynamic for isolated thrillers。 This group is a birdwat Full thoughts: https://fictionmajorette。blogspot。com。。。Overall, this book really didn't work for me。 I had such a hard time getting through it and I think it was at least 100 pages too long。 There wasn't anything glaringly bad with it, but the pieces were all just okay and they came together in such a way where the whole was less than the parts。 I really enjoyed the friend group dynamic and found it a bit of a refreshing take on the typical dynamic for isolated thrillers。 This group is a birdwatching group and most of them don't hang out together outside of the group outings。 I find that with most isolated thrillers, the group involved is often more closely tied than the group in this book was。 Usually, groups that are closely tied mean that they have more history and, thus, more room for interpersonal conflict。 In this case, the fact that these people are basically strangers to each other actually plays into the thriller element because they don't know enough about the others to be confident of who is the murderer and who isn't。I always prefer my isolated thrillers to be multi-POV so I was glad that we got to read from all 7 POV in this story。 However, I did find a lot of the characters to be very annoying and tedious to read from (Emily being the one exception)。 I think my main issue stemmed from the author trying to build tension but it ended up being way overdone for me。 I thought the setting was unique and it was an interesting twist on the typical isolation thriller location。 I'm a bit torn on how 'isolated' I like my isolation thrillers to be because, in theory, the characters weren't truly isolated but the actions and decisions by the characters is what ends up cutting them off for further assistance。 Because of this, there were a few times where the character choices fell into the horror movie trope of "just get out of the house, why are you going to investigate the noise???" where I understand why we needed to have something waylay these characters a bit, but I found some of those situations to be a little too convenient。The pacing was really hit and miss for me。 I think of isolation thrillers as being very high tension but low action and this book was sort of the opposite。 There was a lot of running and hiding and choosing which path to take and more hiding but I never really felt like the characters were in danger。 The ending twist, right at the last page of the book, lowered my rating by a full star。 It wasn't objectively bad, but I felt it lessened the impact of the rest of the book and made the story feel unfinished。 It was one of those reveals that, sure, did turn everything we thought we knew completely around。 However, in doing so, it re-opened parts of the plot that the book had told the reader were done。Overall, this story just didn't come together for me。 I liked some of the individual aspects, but the story as a whole was not entertaining or effective。 I was often annoyed while reading this and really wished the story had taken a different angle with some of the plot lines。Thanks to NetGalley and Avon Books for the ARCExpected publication date is December 9, 2021 。。。more
