Summary

The Stone of Tear, invulnerable fortress of legend, has fallen。 The Children of the Dragon have risen to the call of prophecy and march to the aid of the Light。 Callandor, the Sword That Is Not a Sword, is held by Rand al'Thor, the man proclaimed as the Dragon Reborn。

But still the shadows lengthen and still the Forsaken grow in strength。 If he is to fight them, Rand must master the male half of the True Source, a power corrupted by the Dark One, a power that drives men to madness, a power that may save or damn the world。

3。5。- For an audio loan it was just too long。 41 hours is a lot for 14 days (which is a hard deadline as it takes months to get these books)。 It meant I was listening at times when I really wasn't wanting to。 As a result there were parts I really enjoyed and couldn't wait to keep listening to, but also parts where my mind wandered and had to backtrack。 3。5。- For an audio loan it was just too long。 41 hours is a lot for 14 days (which is a hard deadline as it takes months to get these books)。 It meant I was listening at times when I really wasn't wanting to。 As a result there were parts I really enjoyed and couldn't wait to keep listening to, but also parts where my mind wandered and had to backtrack。 。。。more

This was a strange one。 The story started to drag for me, and I found myself pausing and resuming for a long time。 However, I came back to the story after a particularly long break and couldn't put it down。 I don't know of it was fatigue from the story or what。 It wasn't the writing。 That was excellent, as it's been from the beginning。 Finally finishing this story has me emotional。 I'm so happy I'm done。 I'm going to read something else next but I'm eager to pick up the next book soon and contin This was a strange one。 The story started to drag for me, and I found myself pausing and resuming for a long time。 However, I came back to the story after a particularly long break and couldn't put it down。 I don't know of it was fatigue from the story or what。 It wasn't the writing。 That was excellent, as it's been from the beginning。 Finally finishing this story has me emotional。 I'm so happy I'm done。 I'm going to read something else next but I'm eager to pick up the next book soon and continue the story。 。。。more

Did I mention that Rand is insufferable? Did I mention that Mat is improving? Perrin is good。 Solid。 The ladys are chaos but fun chaos mostly。 Honestly, after 4 books i know that the writing style is bloated and the speed is all over the place。 But then I dont think I have too high expectations so I will be fine。 Flaming Fantasy

Folks we love to find out that our fantasy world is secretly a sci-fi post apocalypse don't we folks。Also what if you did the Scouring of the Shire as a big plot thread in the middle (I mean not even, 4/14) of your series and then like the army of the Shire was an important force at like the siege of Minas Tirith or whatever。 God that would've been sick - this is why the book gets 5 stars。 Folks we love to find out that our fantasy world is secretly a sci-fi post apocalypse don't we folks。Also what if you did the Scouring of the Shire as a big plot thread in the middle (I mean not even, 4/14) of your series and then like the army of the Shire was an important force at like the siege of Minas Tirith or whatever。 God that would've been sick - this is why the book gets 5 stars。 。。。more

Livraço。 Confirma o talento impar de Jordan em criar tramas intrincadas e envolventes。 O livro segue o mesmo ritmo misterioso e pegajosos dos outros。 Muito bom。

4 starsFinally finished book four on my reread of the first few/read of the Wheel of Time。 The party is well and truly split here in a few ways with several going with Rand, while Perrin returns home with Faile and Elayne and Nynaeve go to Tanchico。 I did enjoy this for all that it took me an age to read it between other things。I do enjoy Robert Jordan's world building and the depth of thought put into everything。 It's very clear from how much of it is on display that so did he。 A lot is reveale 4 starsFinally finished book four on my reread of the first few/read of the Wheel of Time。 The party is well and truly split here in a few ways with several going with Rand, while Perrin returns home with Faile and Elayne and Nynaeve go to Tanchico。 I did enjoy this for all that it took me an age to read it between other things。I do enjoy Robert Jordan's world building and the depth of thought put into everything。 It's very clear from how much of it is on display that so did he。 A lot is revealed here, of Rand's heritage, of the history of the Aiel and a lot happens with Perrin and a bit with the women in Tanchico。I don't think I enjoyed this quite as much as I did when I was younger。 I can see a few of the faults a bit more clearly。 There is such a heavy essential sense of binary gender in this。 Women are like this, men are like this and everybody mostly seems to be straight。 I can see the flaws in this now, but for all that I still really enjoyed it。 I still really enjoy the characters and the story and the world even with my awareness of those things I might like to see done differently。 And it is really nice knowing that this time I can read the next one and the next and so one all the way to the end。 I've waited a long time for that。 。。。more

3/5Honestly I’m not saying that the wheel of time could have been written in less than 14 fucking books, but surely those 14 book could have been shorter。 Like this volume had no business of being over a thousand pages long。 You could have cut down 100 pages if people stoped wetting their lips all the time, and if Perrin stopped talking about his beard。 Those are just some of the many repetitions that drag down this book, and it’s such a pity because some parts are actually interesting。 Also all 3/5Honestly I’m not saying that the wheel of time could have been written in less than 14 fucking books, but surely those 14 book could have been shorter。 Like this volume had no business of being over a thousand pages long。 You could have cut down 100 pages if people stoped wetting their lips all the time, and if Perrin stopped talking about his beard。 Those are just some of the many repetitions that drag down this book, and it’s such a pity because some parts are actually interesting。 Also all the Perrin chapters were such a bore and I don’t like him and his love story with Faile is just weird like really weird, also I’m watching the tv series and it’s not helping because the actor they casted as Perrin has always the same stupid expression。 Also no wolves。 Rand is still my favourite character (another cast choice I’m not fond of) and Mat is acting kinda weird but in an interesting way。 I’ll stop now because if i attempt to make a list of all the things that annoyed me I’m never going to finish this review。 Just, i really wish i could skip all the Perrin chapters。 。。。more

The best entry to the series yet, powered solely through Jordan's genius worldbuilding。 The battle in the beginning was riveting, and all the scenes with Rhuidean absolutely blew my mind。 I have a few minor gripes with some characters being inconsistent/unlikeable and the romance being on the more poorly written side, but the things I loved here absolutely outweigh those。 The best entry to the series yet, powered solely through Jordan's genius worldbuilding。 The battle in the beginning was riveting, and all the scenes with Rhuidean absolutely blew my mind。 I have a few minor gripes with some characters being inconsistent/unlikeable and the romance being on the more poorly written side, but the things I loved here absolutely outweigh those。 。。。more

Very good, but also very long。 I think the pacing could have been better, but I love where things are going。Also, that ending。 Not quite on the level of The Great Hunt or The Dragon Reborn, but still very satisfying。

This has to be my favorite of the series…we get to meet the Aiel and visit the Waste。 When I was young, I dreamed of being a maiden of the spear—something that still holds me riveted in this series。

Still a fun story, but it almost got bumped down to three stars because all the men/women bickering between ALL of the characters was getting pretty annoying。 Other than that, more of the same fun adventure and fantasy as the rest of the series so far。

Pretty good, stuff is beginning to start to happen。 Plot was good, nice amount of back story。 Still having an issue with the writing style where there are longer descriptions about getting ready to eat breakfast than there are for the climax of the book。

The Wheel of Time series is a treasure and book 4 is my absolute favorite。 All the main characters are still learning and growing into their roles (which isn’t always the case in later books)。 Plus, Perrin’s story is just tremendous (he’s one of my favorite characters and I *love* his arc here)。 The book is long, to be sure, but so lovely and chock full of great developments。 Honestly, I’d encourage anyone to read this series just to get to this book。

Overall a good book, although the pacing was slow, and Rand’s last chapters were a little disappointing。 Definitely enjoyed Perrin’s perspective the best out of the viewpoints Jordan made throughout the book。

Whoa, so much happened in this book。 Granted, I started it a month ago and then had no time to go back (I have this thing about not reading fantasy in small chunks), so that little fact might have to do with me feeling like I don't even believe some of the things happened at the beginning of this book, and not in the previous ones。 I get why people recommend taking notes and putting down names when reading the series。 I don't do that, there are so many things I know for sure I'm missing, that I Whoa, so much happened in this book。 Granted, I started it a month ago and then had no time to go back (I have this thing about not reading fantasy in small chunks), so that little fact might have to do with me feeling like I don't even believe some of the things happened at the beginning of this book, and not in the previous ones。 I get why people recommend taking notes and putting down names when reading the series。 I don't do that, there are so many things I know for sure I'm missing, that I kind of go with the flow and I hope I will once enjoy all those little details when I get to re-reading these。 And yes, sometimes, I will get lost, what with the world-building details, but I watch Daniel Greene's read-along videos, and those help a great deal with staying on top of things。 By the way, I get that it's probably a culture thing, but some of these names are so similar :D Now, Perrin remains my favorite, I'm still not the biggest fan of Matt, but I'm interested to see what's in store for him。 But Rand is getting better。 (view spoiler)[I still don't get the girl drama surrounding him (I mean, that Elayne, Egwene thing in the beginning, like。。。 what the hell was that :D Here's a girl for you, go ahead! Ok, I guess we're together now? :D), but I started to ship him with Aviendha (it might be just because they seem like such opposing forces, and she's the only girl not in love with him already, right。。。) (hide spoiler)]I kind of get why people don't like Nynaeve, she's stubborn to a fault。 But I'm so intrigued by her character ((view spoiler)[and I ship her with Lan so hard - that scene when they're leaving for Tanchico, oh my。 It's a shame for Lan, though。 He doesn't really get any pages whatsoever and sort of appears in there to serve Nynaeve's plot。 In this instance, I have to say I really like what the TV show is doing for their relationship, as a reader, I didn't get that much build-up in the EoTW, I was left to imagine everything that happened in those months。 (hide spoiler)])I need more Lan and Loial in the following books, PLEASE! 。。。more

The first three books of The Wheel of Time feel very zoomed in on the group from the Two Rivers, but right from the prologue of The Shadow Rising, the world feels impossibly bigger and more complicated, with the main characters spread out far and wide, experiencing different regions, cultures, and dangers all at once。I thoroughly enjoyed this one because Perrin is point of view for a lot of the book。 I have loved Perrin since book one and was so excited to have more of him。 I won't say much so a The first three books of The Wheel of Time feel very zoomed in on the group from the Two Rivers, but right from the prologue of The Shadow Rising, the world feels impossibly bigger and more complicated, with the main characters spread out far and wide, experiencing different regions, cultures, and dangers all at once。I thoroughly enjoyed this one because Perrin is point of view for a lot of the book。 I have loved Perrin since book one and was so excited to have more of him。 I won't say much so as not to spoil anything because so much happens in book four, but it is certainly worth getting through books one through three to get here。 The world opens up。 The magic intensifies。 The responsibilities grow heavy on the backs of the kids who aren't kids anymore。 I'm very excited for book five! 。。。more

4 Stars。。。I think? This is a hard one to rate。 It's come to the point where I realise I have a love-hate relationship with this series - or rather, a love-"eye-roll" relationship with it。 The Shadow Rising contains some of the best content in the series so far, and truly marks the shift from classic fantasy to modern fantasy within the series (and some would argue the genre too)。 However, the problems I had with the first three books have only intensified。 To be fair, said problems can mostly be 4 Stars。。。I think? This is a hard one to rate。 It's come to the point where I realise I have a love-hate relationship with this series - or rather, a love-"eye-roll" relationship with it。 The Shadow Rising contains some of the best content in the series so far, and truly marks the shift from classic fantasy to modern fantasy within the series (and some would argue the genre too)。 However, the problems I had with the first three books have only intensified。 To be fair, said problems can mostly be put down to the fact this series was written in the 90s。 I kept comparing it to Friends in that, like the sit-com, it is of its time, while simultaneously being ahead of its time。Let's get the negatives out of the way first。One of The Shadow Rising's most outdated themes is its gender essentialism。 Instead of challenging the idea that "men are this, women are that", the books are built around that concept and only reinforce it。 Now, I'm not expecting a book from the 90s to deconstruct this theme - though that would have been awesome! - but god, can the characters be aggravating in their views on gender sometimes。 I guess it works in a world-building sense, but it gets very repetitive and annoying when it happens almost every other page in a >1000 page book。 We get it, OK?Having said that, it's interesting to see which characters readers find more annoying in their antagonism towards the opposite sex。 Notably, most men seem to find the female characters more annoying。 Meanwhile, I definitely find the female characters less annoying (view spoiler)[(apart from Faile when she literally slaps Perrin - that felt pretty abusive TBH) (hide spoiler)], maybe because in a world where women are basically supposed to be in control, it actually makes more sense that they would largely be more brash and dismissive。 A reversal of real life, I guess。My biggest criticism of the books, however, is the male gaze。 Every single male character in this book that gets a POV will comment on how pretty a woman is upon meeting them。 It's literally the first observation every time。 As well as being annoying for obvious reasons, every man thinks of women in the same way。 There's no variety and it's all very shallow。 Leading on from this - I'm not a big fan of the romances。 That's not to say there aren't some handled well (view spoiler)[(Rand and Egwene's maturity was handled superbly, and I have a huge soft spot for Lan and Nynaeve) (hide spoiler)], but most are just - sorry for the repetition - shallow as hell。 Everyone makes fun of romances in YA fantasy aimed at teenage girls when right here we literally have a love square and about five hundred cases of instalove。 Also, Rand is becoming less of a whiny baby as the books go on, but these smart and confident women deserve better, let's be real。Now that I've vented - ONTO THE GOOD STUFF。THE FEMALE CHARACTERS。 I love them。 No, they are not perfectly written, but my god, the female friendship? The solidarity? The care they have for each other? The maturity in how they handle small jealousies and cultural misunderstandings? The ferocity of their agency within the text? Their scheming? The spectrum of heroes and villains and all the morally grey in-betweeners? It's just so good。 This is the kind of stuff I still get excited about in the year of our lord 2021, and to see it in a book series written in the 90s is just incredible。 Shout out to Aviendha for being such a champion of Elayne。 Also shout out to Elayne for showing off her political prowess in this book (view spoiler)[(as well as making me laugh in that Thom scene (hide spoiler)], and Nynaeve for being a total badass as usual (view spoiler)[(taking on a bloody Forsaken by herself, WE LOVE AND SUPPORT HER (hide spoiler)]。 Also - THE WORLD BUILDING。 Wow, does it just explode in this book, when we finally get to see the time before the world broke。 This is where the modern fantasy elements come in, guys, and they are FABULOUS。 (view spoiler)[Post-apocalyptic fantasy world! Post-apocalyptic fantasy world!!! (hide spoiler)]。 I loved the entire Aiel history part of the book, easily my favourite bit of the series so far。 It changes everything about how we view the story world and I adore it。Further more - political intrigue。 Those Aes Sedai! We love them and we love to hate them。 Siun Sanche is absolutely awesome, I want to be her when I grow up (view spoiler)[(without, you know, the coup and the gentling part, of course, but how amazing of her to find strength even after all that, what a badass) (hide spoiler)]。 I also really liked some of the Aiel political intrigue too。Surprisingly, I found myself enjoying Rand a lot more in this book。 As I said before, he is less of a whiny baby now, and I like how he is still just a shepherd boy deep down, and proud of that。 Perrin's storyline was also great, and though Faile annoyed me earlier, the bit where she supported him after THAT horrific revelation was genuinely tear-jerking。 Now。。。I'm four episodes into the show at this point。 Do I prefer it to the books? Controversially, yes。 While the show has its flaws, it takes what is great about The Wheel of Time and dials down the stuff that doesn't work so well in 2021 (besides the fridging of a character in the first episode that DOES NOT HAPPEN IN THE BOOKS), and personally I find it easier to connect to the characters on an emotional level, especially since the show gives an equal amount of screen time to all of them。 If the books don't work for you, I'd still recommend giving the show a go! Personally, while I prefer the show, I'm enjoying the story in both formats, and letting the best bits of both inform my idea of the series as a whole。 They really do work great together, and I can't wait to see this book in particular played out on-screen。Anyway, thus concludes my rambling, venting/gushing essay of The Shadow Rising and the series as a whole so far。 。。。more
