Summary

Book 5 in the global bestselling series, "The Horus Heresy: Siege of Terra"

The victories of Saturnine and the sacrifices of the Eternity Wall space port have faded into the hope of yesterday。 Denied but not defeated, the traitors intensify their assault on the Imperial Palace。 With the principal space ports in Horus’ hands, the Warmaster now drains the heavens of his reserves。 As the pressure of the assault increases, the power of Chaos waxes。 The waking lives of the defenders are filled with despair, while their dreams pull them in search of a false paradise。 As the fabric of the defences fails and the will of those who stand on them cracks, Horus commands the Titans of the Legio Mortis to breach the walls。 Against them stands the might of Mercury Wall and the strength of the Legio Ignatum。 Ancient rivals, the god-engines of both Legions meet in battle, while within the walls a few desperate individuals seek a way to turn back the tide of the warp’s malign influence。 Across Terra lost warriors and travellers make their way through wastelands and gardens of horror, towards home and an unknown future。

Very, very good。 A key BL/HH writer pulling out all the stops。

Would give zero stars if I could。 I've read the entire horus heresy and siege of Terra series plus many more from the wh40k universe。 Easily 70 novels over the last 10 years。 This is hands down the worst one I have had the displeasure of slogging through。 Extremely superfluous confusing writing that adds nothing to the story。 I am actually appalled that a novel holding a spot in the final conclusion to the horus heresy, a story I've happily (until now) invested so much time into, was so bad。 It' Would give zero stars if I could。 I've read the entire horus heresy and siege of Terra series plus many more from the wh40k universe。 Easily 70 novels over the last 10 years。 This is hands down the worst one I have had the displeasure of slogging through。 Extremely superfluous confusing writing that adds nothing to the story。 I am actually appalled that a novel holding a spot in the final conclusion to the horus heresy, a story I've happily (until now) invested so much time into, was so bad。 It's insulting to the rest of the series。 Huge miss with this novel。 Really hoping the next few get back on track。 。。。more

Just keeps jumping between stories, absolutely unfocussed。 Kept losing track and interest。 Not worth finishing honestly。

I’ll be honest, I couldn’t care less about Titans。 I know it fits with the story and BL wants us to care about giant god machines but I find their Titan books real snoozes。

John has done it again! What a horror show…。 This novel should be a triumph! It should propel us towards the greatest conclusion in science fiction history!! Needlessly padded and bloated just to get the page number up? Check。 Telling you how to think rather than telling you what to think about? Check check cheeeeeek! And befor John has done it again! Because in his pursuit of making one of the worst Black Library novels ever, he is able to successfully make all the characters uninteresting, un-likeable and boring。 The set pieces flow like a river of bricks。 The Primarch’s all speak like differing cardboard boxes。 Familiar faces from previous books act like pale imitations of themselves。 it’s as if John hasn’t even read the previous novels, nor give a flying F about the lore from the past 50+ novels。 Does John French secretly hate women or something? Has he even spoken to one?In John’s pursuit of virtue points he introduces multiple divine flawless female characters who are childish, unlikable, uninteresting and possess all of the personality charisma of a brick。 For heavens sake walk outside and talk to someone from the opposite sex John。 You might learn that they’re people with differing personalities and flaws。 This is worse than Game of Thrones season eight。 It took me years to get over the cringe he presented to us in The Solar War。 Sigiismund, the Emperors champion, badass of the badassest, reduced to an emo…。。 my goodness。 This book is more of that nonsense…。 At this point I’m just done, between Gav Thorpe and French trying their hardest to destroy this series I’m not sure I can entertain the thought of reading another SoT novel and I read ever HH book up to the siege。Read at your own peril。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I really wanted to like this book。 I tried, stuck with it but in the end apart from some cool background stuff I found it did not really add anything to progress the Siege of Terra plot。 This could easily have been a novella rather than another filler novel。 There are Titans but do not be fooled they are not in the book as much as you might expect。 Most of it is focused on secondary characters that again would have been better in a novella rather than a main book。 Read if you want to say you hav I really wanted to like this book。 I tried, stuck with it but in the end apart from some cool background stuff I found it did not really add anything to progress the Siege of Terra plot。 This could easily have been a novella rather than another filler novel。 There are Titans but do not be fooled they are not in the book as much as you might expect。 Most of it is focused on secondary characters that again would have been better in a novella rather than a main book。 Read if you want to say you have read the whole Siege of Terra series otherwise you could skip this and you won't really have missed anything。 。。。more

The name is a bit misleading, not only was the focus not on Legio Mortis the way it had partially been in Titandeath, most of the plot wasn't even revolving around titan battles。 That being said, I find most stories more inspiring than titans so that wasn't a necessarily a bad thing。 Other than the Dark Angel episode all other story arcs in the book ended abruptly。 550 pages and yet it felt like half of a book。 The atmosphere was good though and I did not mind the perpetuals storyline as I've se The name is a bit misleading, not only was the focus not on Legio Mortis the way it had partially been in Titandeath, most of the plot wasn't even revolving around titan battles。 That being said, I find most stories more inspiring than titans so that wasn't a necessarily a bad thing。 Other than the Dark Angel episode all other story arcs in the book ended abruptly。 550 pages and yet it felt like half of a book。 The atmosphere was good though and I did not mind the perpetuals storyline as I've seen some readers did。 Katsuhiro deserves more space as he is the character most readers can relate to。 。。。more

This is a great addition to the siege stories。 Going back to some more characters from the hours heresy is always good to read。 The titan fighting is brutal, epic and well done but doesn't outstay its welcome which I'm glad about it。 Lots of new questions and plot lines opening up。 This is a great addition to the siege stories。 Going back to some more characters from the hours heresy is always good to read。 The titan fighting is brutal, epic and well done but doesn't outstay its welcome which I'm glad about it。 Lots of new questions and plot lines opening up。 。。。more

A real disappointment after Saturnine which is probably one of my favorite books from the black library, to start Mortis is an incredibly bloated book it really could have been 50% shorter there are a lot of unneeded characters and plots going on in this book that were not to fun to read at all and in the end I didnt really feel like they were necessary to the plot overall。 The selling point of this book is of course Titians going to war building sizes walking churches with enough firepower to d A real disappointment after Saturnine which is probably one of my favorite books from the black library, to start Mortis is an incredibly bloated book it really could have been 50% shorter there are a lot of unneeded characters and plots going on in this book that were not to fun to read at all and in the end I didnt really feel like they were necessary to the plot overall。 The selling point of this book is of course Titians going to war building sizes walking churches with enough firepower to destroy entire cities in moments and somehow this isn't interesting to read in the slightest。 The same goes for the Knights storyline as well which I was hoping for some kind of interesting twist because after a chapter of two you can guess what is going to happen with them pretty fast, it kind of reminded me of a similar story in the Vengeful Spirit but if all of the characters were uninspired and one note。 I did enjoy Perturabo in this book but I think the parts with him in it are the only positives。 Even though I don't really want to have to say this I have also got to mention the a lot of the female characters are really poorly written often portrayed in golden light and are amazing at everything they do whilst they stare down Primarchs and Space marines。。。。 Not every female warhammer character needs to be Lotara Sarrin, the writer really needs to get better at writing females characters。 。。。more

A good read by any means but one that doesn’t fill any cup for the hardcore fan of the universe。 John French is a good writer, and his novels are quite interesting, focusing on the characters and vistas more than anything else。 While for any other book this might be fitting, for the Siege of Terra series, falls into tediousness and boredom pretty quickly。 We’re talking about the battle of battles here, and while there might be some characters and plots that might occur in the sidelines, the seri A good read by any means but one that doesn’t fill any cup for the hardcore fan of the universe。 John French is a good writer, and his novels are quite interesting, focusing on the characters and vistas more than anything else。 While for any other book this might be fitting, for the Siege of Terra series, falls into tediousness and boredom pretty quickly。 We’re talking about the battle of battles here, and while there might be some characters and plots that might occur in the sidelines, the series is simply about loyalist legions taking on whatever the Warmaster throws at them。 And Mortis really fails in that regard。It seems like French didn’t want to deal with the much-needed action scenes, nor wanted to dwell into the minds and actions of the Primarchs and main heroes and villains from both sides。 Instead he focuses on plots and twists that drag the book to yet another plot “sinkhole” that drains the novel of most of its appeal。 John French’s writing style is his greatest strength but in the case of this book, his greatest enemy too。 Long poetic descriptions of battles and vistas don’t add to the plot and instead derail the real action。 The reader may constantly find himself skipping a paragraph or two looking for the outcome for a single shot of a Titan to kill another。 Or worse yet, Oll taking a simple decision。 We’ve reached the 5th book in the series and the amount of appearances the epic Primarchs and their legions or even the emperor or Malcador have had, have been reduced to just a mere handful of pages (in all 5 books!)。 On the other side the reader has been bombarded with countless side plots of soldiers, perpetuals and remembrancers that only divert the reader’s attention away from the greatest battle of the galaxy。 The time for the fans to read about the epic deeds of the loyalist legions and their Primarchs is now, and while there may be countless numerous plot points open, they can be eventually closed in side stories like Sons of the Selenar or Fury of Magnus。 We need more Space Marine action, we need to see our heroes do epic things, and we need to see the villains at their worst。 As of now, all we have is short stories of meaningless characters crammed together into 5 books with short passages of really epic deeds。 As of this book, the Siege of Terra feels like we are traveling to the Emperor’s Palace to see the big show, but we stop several times along the way to hear stories that add little to the journey。 And the worst part is, we’ve got very few books left in the series and there’s still a long way to go。 。。。more

Sadly, this is the first misstep in the Siege of Terra series。 One would think by this point the authors would start closing threads like the novellas have done, but not here, instead, this book introduces new characters that lead to dead ends, these characters take much of the bulk of the book and the ones you expect to see in such a pivotal moment of the siege are totally absent。 Some parts of this book are simply impossible to follow, one simply don't understand what's going on until you are Sadly, this is the first misstep in the Siege of Terra series。 One would think by this point the authors would start closing threads like the novellas have done, but not here, instead, this book introduces new characters that lead to dead ends, these characters take much of the bulk of the book and the ones you expect to see in such a pivotal moment of the siege are totally absent。 Some parts of this book are simply impossible to follow, one simply don't understand what's going on until you are about to finish the chapter。 Really important moments are few and they are way too far from each other, making it feel completely disjointed。 It took me 3 months to finish this book, every time I picked it up I felt tired after 45 minutes of reading and I simply didn't want to go back to it for a whole week or more。 The author's afterword takes quite a few pages explaining some stuff that do help make sense of the mess this book is, but you are not supposed to need such thing to get it。 Titans are a dodgy subject to write in 40k, sometimes it turns out ok, others don't, this book would be the later I guess, the thing is you don't get to see that much of titans either。 。。。more

I really wanted to like the novel。 I loved John French previous work and his particular perspective and style in describing events and action。 But Mortis was a disappointment。It was too fragmented and the individual story arcs were too meaningless in face of the climax of that 60-novel series。 I can see, what the author intended to do, but felt like he missed the point of a good novel itself: It tells one cohesive story, in which ideas are being tested by the actions and reactions of characters。 I really wanted to like the novel。 I loved John French previous work and his particular perspective and style in describing events and action。 But Mortis was a disappointment。It was too fragmented and the individual story arcs were too meaningless in face of the climax of that 60-novel series。 I can see, what the author intended to do, but felt like he missed the point of a good novel itself: It tells one cohesive story, in which ideas are being tested by the actions and reactions of characters。In this regard Mortis led nowhere。 The individual story arcs were only connected in that sense, that they all are located on Earth during the siege。 But for nearly non of the arcs it is obvious how their success or failings might even influence the siege of terra。 They felt trivial。 No ideas were tested or pitched against each other; it felt more like the author himself was tested instead。 I felt his struggle, rather than the struggle of his characters。Having come so far, I really feel like the author should have focussed the main story on the Titan battle and tell the side stories in short bursts of cameo。 It makes me more sad than angry, that one of the final stories in the Horus Heresy turns out to be so anecdotal。 。。。more
