The only downside to this book is Greg's application of the Essentialist theory to the spelling & grammar! ;POther than that, great read - very eye-opening and transformative。 The only downside to this book is Greg's application of the Essentialist theory to the spelling & grammar! ;POther than that, great read - very eye-opening and transformative。 。。。more

This was a really powerful book for me。 I think I will try to read it every year or so。 The audiobook was great and I learned a lot。 I had to have some grace with myself while reading it。 Not all of his ideas (such as "set aside an entire day to get one thing done") are remotely possible while raising small children at home。 But I can apply the principles generally。 This was a really powerful book for me。 I think I will try to read it every year or so。 The audiobook was great and I learned a lot。 I had to have some grace with myself while reading it。 Not all of his ideas (such as "set aside an entire day to get one thing done") are remotely possible while raising small children at home。 But I can apply the principles generally。 。。。more

DNF - the book talks about using your time wisely, and I don't think reading this book is worth it。 Very shallow anecdotes and examples。 Maybe worth reading if you have a problem saying "no" to things and really need a kick up the butt。 DNF - the book talks about using your time wisely, and I don't think reading this book is worth it。 Very shallow anecdotes and examples。 Maybe worth reading if you have a problem saying "no" to things and really need a kick up the butt。 。。。more

I really appreciated the message and stories in this book。 I believe practicing the mantra “less but better” is something we can all practice on the daily。 Being in a system that removes choice and determines your direction and work can be demoralizing overtime。 It makes me think about how I can (re)establish my boundaries and have the courage to stand up for them without fear。 This is a book I will read again as a reference。 And I will enjoy the 21-day challenge。

Life changing! It's in no way a perfect book, the examples are sometimes trite, and the wording sometimes repetitive, but the idea of pursuing less but better, learning to say no gracefully, living by design, and prioritization, is so fundamentally important for my life I have learned so much from this book。 Our time is very limited, and we cannot do everything, and not everything is important。 This book has taught me how to be more conscious in my decisions and I really enjoyed the epiphanies。 Life changing! I took my time reading and processing this as I really needed these lessons。 I am guilty of frequently doing far too much and as a result finding myself harried and doing too much and yet falling short of what I know is possible。 I can be more conscious of my choices and consider more carefully what is actually essential。

Books like Essentialism will always be subject to the "there's nothing new to new me here, it's all common sense"。 Part of that is because there are many great ideas in the book that do make sense。 The hard part is having the discipline to actually implement them in a lasting way。 The same is true for Cal Newport's books。 The reason I like their books, though, is that they help remind me of what is important in life and they give me motivation for making positive changes。 Well, at least once I g Books like Essentialism will always be subject to the "there's nothing new to new me here, it's all common sense"。 Part of that is because there are many great ideas in the book that do make sense。 The hard part is having the discipline to actually implement them in a lasting way。 The same is true for Cal Newport's books。 The reason I like their books, though, is that they help remind me of what is important in life and they give me motivation for making positive changes。 Well, at least once I get over the disappointment in myself for spending time writing a nonessential book review that few will read。 。。。more

What I don't like about this is that like most self help books, the author like to group a set of values as essentialism and then group certain well known people as being essentialist。 While they are a number of good lessons to be learned from this book, it can be shortened。 But I guess there is a need to fill pages。 What I don't like about this is that like most self help books, the author like to group a set of values as essentialism and then group certain well known people as being essentialist。 While they are a number of good lessons to be learned from this book, it can be shortened。 But I guess there is a need to fill pages。 。。。more

I really liked the premise of the book, and I appreciate the acknowledgment of many of the dynamics that are predominant in today´s society。 I also like the encouraging approach。 I think that normally making changes is more at our hand than we are willing to recognize。 I think however, that the book lacked depth。 If you´re approaching it as a very casual read or you´re not too versed in areas like mindfulness, business strategy or behavioral psychology, then this might disappoint you as much as I really liked the premise of the book, and I appreciate the acknowledgment of many of the dynamics that are predominant in today´s society。 I also like the encouraging approach。 I think that normally making changes is more at our hand than we are willing to recognize。 I think however, that the book lacked depth。 If you´re approaching it as a very casual read or you´re not too versed in areas like mindfulness, business strategy or behavioral psychology, then this might disappoint you as much as it did to me。 As I was reading, I was lacking a more consistent and scientific based approach, but the sources Greg is using are mostly quotations of other books that do summarize research, or online articles or videos。 All the time I felt like he´s trying to thread everything under this key word, so that everything can be framed as "essentialism" or "non-essentialism", a convenient oversimplification that doesn´t stand itself too well in my opinion。 I wish the examples were actually relatable, or that there was more specific research, and not just anecdotes。 Even though I don´t see how this book can offer you a solid methodology for strategizing your long term goals, I think you can still enjoy the read and get lots of practical advice and inspiration for your daily life。 。。。more

I enjoyed the ideas in the book and I think most of them are all ones that would be good to put into practice。 I do think this book was geared more towards men and specifically men in business with all the examples。 As a work from home mom, trying to wrap my head around how to apply the principles to my own life was a little difficult。

Liked the concept of this book and found some of the ideas helpful but overall there were so many things that were repeated and random points made without any explanation or evidence。 I didn't relate to a lot of the examples either。 Liked the concept of this book and found some of the ideas helpful but overall there were so many things that were repeated and random points made without any explanation or evidence。 I didn't relate to a lot of the examples either。 。。。more

Het boek heeft zeker een waardevolle boodschap, maar voor een boek dat gaat over ‘the essential’ is het wel behoorlijk langdradig geschreven。

Eye opener。 This book gave me so much clarity。 It solved problems I didn't know I had。 Made me realized how almost everything i care so much about are nonessentials!!

The lessons in the books are helpful for everyone。 Indeed, this book explains the difference between essential tasks and trivial tasks in a well-sophisticated manner。
