I’m enjoying the story but action is drawn confusingly。 Hopefully this improves with later volumes。

One Piece continues with the Syrup Village Arc, while I've freed myself from VIZ's shitty localization by reading a fan translation of the Digital Colored version。I previously rated and reviewed the first 3-in-1 omnibus, during which I refrained from writing too much about the Syrup Village Arc, as it hadn't progressed far enough for me to feel comfortable appraising it。 We've gotten further by the end of this volume, but not quite to the end。 What's happened so far: Usopp has tried to warn the One Piece continues with the Syrup Village Arc, while I've freed myself from VIZ's shitty localization by reading a fan translation of the Digital Colored version。I previously rated and reviewed the first 3-in-1 omnibus, during which I refrained from writing too much about the Syrup Village Arc, as it hadn't progressed far enough for me to feel comfortable appraising it。 We've gotten further by the end of this volume, but not quite to the end。 What's happened so far: Usopp has tried to warn the village and Kaya about the butler's villainy, but no one believed him, so it's up to him and Luffy's crew to defend the village。 Captain Kuro tries to kill the sheep-headed butler Merry, who survives to confirm for Kaya the truth of Usopp's warning。 Meanwhile, Usopp and Nami try to hold off Django and the other Black Cat Pirates while Luffy and Zoro run around the island, both men having shitty direction senses and accordingly having trouble reaching the north shore where the Black Cats are expected。 Obviously, Luffy and Zoro show up in the nick of time to defend their buddies。 Django shows that he can power up his crew by hypnotizing them to believe they're stronger, as well as to ignore their wounds。 As we've seen last volume, Luffy is susceptible to hypnosis, and so too does he power up, being able to take out almost all the crew with a new move (Gum-Gum Gatling Gun)。 He then tries to destroy the Black Cats' ship, but Django snaps him out of hypnosis, and the figurehead he removes from the ship's bow falls upon him, knocking him out long enough for Zoro to face some trouble against two new enemies, Buchi and Sham。 Kuro shows up with his Freddy Krueger gloves, then Kaya shows up to try to stop him。 Luffy wakes up at some point and punches Kuro。 The volume ends before the fight continues。。。。Honestly, I don't care too much for this arc in terms of its writing, or more specifically its plotting。 Kuro's plan is dumb。 He wants to screw Kaya out of her inheritance the legal way, by having Django hypnotize her into writing a will granting Kuro everything。 He's willing to kill all his men for failing to attack the village on time。 Why not just call it a day and kill Kaya immediately and pilfer her shit? There's no reason to believe the world of One Piece ties assets up in banks and things。 For all we know, no lawyers are needed; Kaya writes a will, Kaya dies, Kuro gets everything, no hoops needing to be jumped through。 I feel like Oda's idea is just to broaden the backstory of new arcs, such that it isn't just "bad guy attacks new good guy, Luffy fights bad guy, good guy joins crew。" Plug in Morgan as bad guy and Zoro as good guy, or Buggy as bad and Nami as good, and now Kuro as bad and Usopp as good。 Morgan and Helmeppo were set to execute Zoro。 Buggy was occupying a town while Nami happened to be stealing his shit。 Kuro is trying to scam Kaya。 So the basic plots are different enough, which is nice。。。 I guess。The thing is, even with Kuro's plan being dumb, the volume itself is fun with its action, and that's mostly what's important in a battle manga from Weekly Shounen Jump。 There's enough goofy shit going on that it could very well be true that Kuro's plan is meant to be a joke, just as early stories in Dragon Ball had jokey villain plans。 I don't know。 Right now, I'm just in it for the wackiness。*****Luffy: "Oh no! We haven't bought our meat yet! Even the butcher will soon run away!"*Luffy: "Okay! I'm definitely going to butt-in on this one!"**Nami: "But first things first, all their treasure is mine!"*Django: "You idiots! It's not morning yet! Don't say 'good morning'! The moon is still out, it's still midnight! [。。。] My men。。。 Mornin'。"*Nami: "Sorry! But my treasure is in danger!"*Luffy: "Eh!? I reached the village? I though I was running to the north shore?"*Luffy and Zoro, at separate times: "Which way is north?"*Usopp: "I will not let you go。。。 because I want the villagers to believe that I'm a liar!! And the village to stay as peaceful as always!!"*Zoro: "What took us so long?"**Luffy: "How should I know! Right now I just want to kick some ass!"*Chapter 30 cover's giant robot versions of Luffy, Nami, and Zoro*Gum-Gum Gatling Gun after Luffy falls for Django's hypnosis power-up for the Black Cat men*sweat drop on the Black Cat ship figurehead when Luffy breaks the bow*Chapter 32 cover's cheongsam Nami*Zoro: "You don't know the difference。。。 between 'using three swords' and 'using Three Swords Style'!"*Luffy: "Was that you, Nami!!? How dare you step on my face。。。"*Luffy: "If you really hate being hit。。。 I must make sure I hit you a few hundred more times!!" 。。。more

One Piece, Vol。 4 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (27–35) of the on-going manga series。Usopp fails to convince the villagers of the impending pirate invasion, but when he decides to prevent the raiding party from reaching them he is joined by the Straw Hat Pirates。 They spend the night in preparation, planning to stop the Black Cat Pirates on the coast。 However, they pick the wrong side of the village to protect。 When they realize their mistake, One Piece, Vol。 4 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (27–35) of the on-going manga series。Usopp fails to convince the villagers of the impending pirate invasion, but when he decides to prevent the raiding party from reaching them he is joined by the Straw Hat Pirates。 They spend the night in preparation, planning to stop the Black Cat Pirates on the coast。 However, they pick the wrong side of the village to protect。 When they realize their mistake, they have to hurry to reach the other coast。The fight goes well, although they are unprepared and greatly outnumbered。 Kuro, angered by the raiding party's delay, appears on the battlefield; so does Kaya, in a futile attempt to negotiate a compromise。This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Eiichirō Oda。 For the most part, it is written and illustrated rather well。 This tankōbon continues the storyline in Syrup Village as Kuro of the Black Cat Pirates' three year plan comes to fruition, but is stymied by Monkey D。 Luffy and his Straw Hat Pirates protects the unsuspecting village。All in all, One Piece, Vol。 4 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more。 。。。more
