Wow, uh…。 I’m not sure。 What to say about this book。 There’s so MUCH here。 I can’t believe there are eight books; this was a whole saga on its own。 A friend told me there were a lot of terms and names that looked hard to pronounce and they were so correct—don’t ask me to talk about this book in depth because I don’t know how to pronounce shit。 But uh, here’s what I can say:Plot: The plot was interesting。 It was a very good plot, with a lot of different threads, a lot of politics, action, even a Wow, uh…。 I’m not sure。 What to say about this book。 There’s so MUCH here。 I can’t believe there are eight books; this was a whole saga on its own。 A friend told me there were a lot of terms and names that looked hard to pronounce and they were so correct—don’t ask me to talk about this book in depth because I don’t know how to pronounce shit。 But uh, here’s what I can say:Plot: The plot was interesting。 It was a very good plot, with a lot of different threads, a lot of politics, action, even a little inter-personal plot。 All compelling。 It never felt simple。 (Actually, it occasionally felt too complicated, which is wild because I never say that about a plot, ever。) However, although the plot was interesting, compelling, well-constructed, complicated—all good things—it was also paced REALLY weirdly。 At the beginning it dragged for a lot longer than expositions do, and there were several instances of a certain event/plot point being built up to/prepared for for a considerable amount of time, and then suddenly it was over。 There were time jumps。 It wasn’t very well paced, is what I’m trying to say。 But strangely so, because it was evidently so well-planned。 Worldbuilding: The world building was really well done, I feel。 It was complicated and didn’t feel over simplified or as if the world was defined around the plot of the book; it felt as if the plot was defined around the world, which is where I think you should always want to be at。 Additionally, everything in the worlds—weapons, technology, culture, the worms, the environment/climate—was well used; none of it was underused。 It’s always really satisfying to see the implications and impacts of something in the world unpacked thoroughly。 Characters: I enjoyed the characters! I find that in these plot-driven books, where it’s more about the grand scheme of things than the individuals or their lives and feelings, it can be hard to be invested because the characters don’t compel you, but in this one, they were fleshed out enough that I did care。 They were distinct, separate people, not only functions of the plot, which I appreciated。 Still, you know。 I like to have a little more than what this book gave me。Writing: As with the pacing, this was strange。 It was like Frank Herbert knew what he was doing, but he didn’t know how to be doing it? Like, obviously it was readable and enjoyable, and was perfectly good at conveying scenes and getting across all the information that needed to be communicated。 It was a pretty smooth read。 At the same time, he did things that I don’t think worked very well—his line-by-line choices were kind of strange。 He presented nearly all thoughts as [blank] thought: (italics), which I suppose is more necessary since he’s writing in third person omniscient—where other stories would just have it integrated into the narrative POV–but it still felt strange。 (He has this type of sentence that irked me for no reason at all: He pressed his hand to the woman’s neck, felt her pulse。 A comma instead of and or starting a new sentence or something。) In the middle of a clearly important, urgent moment, he would get philosophical。 Some random things:1。 The antagonist is really really fat—the purpose is to emphasize that he has access to and indulges in a gross amount of excess, and I understand that, but it was just in bad taste to me that every single time we ever see him on page, we’re reminded that he’s fat。 His fat fingers, his fat face, his fat body, etc。 etc。 Every single time he does anything it’s mentioned that he’s fat and that it’s gross。 Any other character descriptors for anyone else (stocky, pale, skinny, facial hair, long hair, short hair, height) are only mentioned a handful of times each, just enough to give us the idea。 2。 The women (of which there are few, proportionally) have an emphasis on, like… breeding, that I didn’t particularly take to, even though I understand the purpose and context in the story/world/culture the characters are in。 It feels kind of… you know… the purpose of women is childbearing and whatever the men want of them。 I don’t know。 I AM glad there was Jessica, who was certainly a person。 Anyway, I don’t necessarily recommend this book, but if you have it in you, give it a go, and be ready to put it down if you’re not up for it。  。。。more

A big and complicated world that feels very lived in, but also mysterious。 If you like world building and complex fictional cultures, you’ll love this。 I tend to gravitate more towards character-driven stories, and I struggled to care about anyone in particular。 Paul was ok? But not exactly the most compelling guy in the world。 Overall I’m glad I read it, but I don’t know if I’ll finish the series。

I have so many thoughts that I can't really think of a star rating。 At some times, this was fascinating and thrilling。。。and at others, a bit of a slog and too cryptic to fully understand。 I have so many thoughts that I can't really think of a star rating。 At some times, this was fascinating and thrilling。。。and at others, a bit of a slog and too cryptic to fully understand。 。。。more

This is an overrated book。 I liked it a lot at the end, but it took almost 400 pages to get to that point。 The is a 3。5 rating I’m rounding up due to reputation。

The information overwhelm during the first chapters is definitely a hurdle, but it's so so so rewarding to plow through and see the whole story unravel。Not a huge fan of Paul as a character and the black and white roles of men and women in this universe though。 The information overwhelm during the first chapters is definitely a hurdle, but it's so so so rewarding to plow through and see the whole story unravel。Not a huge fan of Paul as a character and the black and white roles of men and women in this universe though。 。。。more

When I asked people who had read this book whether I should read this book the resounding answer was no。 So, naturally, I picked it up。 I've never been so surprised to have enjoyed a book。 I absolutely loved it - its completely readable, very addictive and lengthy enough that I feel proud of myself for having finished it in a few days。 And then, devastated, when I realised I had only made it to base camp of Everest and that I have another 20 books to go。 No wonder the ending felt rushed! Like everyone else I really wanted to read the book after seeing the new film。 Had to give up and listen to the audiobook because the writing was just too dense for me。 Definitely enjoyed the drama and the allure of the characters and their internal dialogues。 Also really grateful I had the movie to do the heavy lifting of trying to imagine this world…

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Dune your mom。Yeah I liked it a lot。 A lot of what I like in fantasy sci-fi which are slow moments that make you appreciate the world so much more。 What I dislike in all my books are giant time skips and introducing and killing characters that I never met。 But otherwise very good book。

Frank Herbert was a terrible writer with some really interesting ideas。 I'm not going to spend a while going into all of the really fundamental problems with his prose, his dialogue, and his characters, since other reviews have done a great job summing all of this up, but in general it's really frustrating to have to slog through the writing in Dune。 The worldbuilding is really exciting, and that's the only thing that really kept me going through it all。 There are certain elements that really ne Frank Herbert was a terrible writer with some really interesting ideas。 I'm not going to spend a while going into all of the really fundamental problems with his prose, his dialogue, and his characters, since other reviews have done a great job summing all of this up, but in general it's really frustrating to have to slog through the writing in Dune。 The worldbuilding is really exciting, and that's the only thing that really kept me going through it all。 There are certain elements that really needed to be fleshed out more, but I still loved learning about the ecology, culture, and factional politics of Arrakis (there are also some hints of interesting philosophical themes, although they're explored extremely clumsily)。 But the story that Herbert is trying to tell here is middling at best and outright dumb at worst。 And I'm not a snob about different styles of writing, but Herbert's writing is genuinely awful。 Someone like George RR Martin, for instance, is not a "great master" of prose, but he's still a very good writer, and he does an INCREDIBLE job bringing his world to life with engaging characters and suspenseful storytelling。 There's nothing like that in Dune, and so the entire thing falls flat in the end。 So take that 2/5 rating as a 5/5 for the ideas and worldbuilding behind Dune and a 1/5 for literally everything else。 。。。more

This is my second time of reading this: I was about 20 last time and really was blown away by the book。 Now on rereading I still love it but saw much more in the tale, especially Herbert’s prescience about climate change and mans’ relationship with nature and the ability to recover a ‘dead’ planet by the use of ecological management, sacrifice and good sense。

The imagery in this book is very interesting。 I have to say I'm looking forward to watching the movie。 An engaging read but there was definitely lots going on。 Worms, spices, water, kinship, enemy groups, unborn kin。 Lots to keep track of (but fair enough, Herbert is creating a whole other world that the reader must understand)。 Though I got through this book I'm not sure I'll read the rest of the series。 Even though I feel like the hype around Dune might not be completely justified (at least fo The imagery in this book is very interesting。 I have to say I'm looking forward to watching the movie。 An engaging read but there was definitely lots going on。 Worms, spices, water, kinship, enemy groups, unborn kin。 Lots to keep track of (but fair enough, Herbert is creating a whole other world that the reader must understand)。 Though I got through this book I'm not sure I'll read the rest of the series。 Even though I feel like the hype around Dune might not be completely justified (at least for me), every time I read science fiction/dystopia I wonder why I don't read more of this genre。 If you read/love this genre please share your recommendations! 。。。more
