book's content warning: SA and murder （can't remember anymore）。there were a lot of uncomfortable themes that weren't portrayed with as much seriousness as they deserve。 the author often romanticised/pardoned sexual harassment， as the love interest in the following books was complacent to Jude's assault。It was a slow build that was really muddled， a lot of plot points felt unnecessary and weren't properly concluded。 I often felt lost while reading。I wouldn't recommend this book， I personally coul book's content warning: SA and murder （can't remember anymore）。there were a lot of uncomfortable themes that weren't portrayed with as much seriousness as they deserve。 the author often romanticised/pardoned sexual harassment， as the love interest in the following books was complacent to Jude's assault。It was a slow build that was really muddled， a lot of plot points felt unnecessary and weren't properly concluded。 I often felt lost while reading。I wouldn't recommend this book， I personally couldn't enjoy it after the classroom fruit scene:（ 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it， click here。 I had been putting this book off for so long but decided to finally pick it up so It would stop glaring at me from my bookshelf。 Boy， am I glad this book is over。Please tell me I’m not the only one horrendously annoyed that the world is called “Faerie。” Annoyed me every time I read it。First off， someone point me to a single likeable character。 I couldn’t even make myself like Jude， the main character。 Her thought processes don’t make sense。 She talks about her parents murders and has accepted Ma I had been putting this book off for so long but decided to finally pick it up so It would stop glaring at me from my bookshelf。 Boy， am I glad this book is over。Please tell me I’m not the only one horrendously annoyed that the world is called “Faerie。” Annoyed me every time I read it。First off， someone point me to a single likeable character。 I couldn’t even make myself like Jude， the main character。 Her thought processes don’t make sense。 She talks about her parents murders and has accepted Madoc into her life so flippantly。 She tried to sword fight her twin sister over a stupid boy。 She barely thought about Valerian after she murdered him and put him in the ground。 Not to mention her betrayal at the end basically being the final nail in the coffin of me possibly liking her at all。Also the thought that Cardan eventually turns into her lover somewhere in the series irks me so bad。 We are just supposed to accept that after her talked to her so badly and put her in actual danger multiple times？ One kiss out of spite and I’m supposed to be weak in the knees？The final thing that probably bugs me the MOST: the Locke betrayal。 Can someone give me one good plot reasoning that Locke had to fake date Jude while courting Taryn for marriage？ The whole testing Taryn to see if she could keep it a secret to prove she was like the fae is such bullshit。 And letting a guy make your twin sister look like an idiot and allowing him to break your twin’s heart？ Taryn doesn’t get any likeable points in my book either。The only reason I didn’t DNF this at the 100 page mark is because I have a goal to not DNF any books this year， but this book was testing my willpower。All in all， good riddance。 。。。more

I did read the audio book version online， but I think I'm going to read the hardcover for some more answers。Not that the story had any， I just want to cover my tracks before doing a video on it。From the beginning， I had a lot of hope for the main character。 I had hope for the story， and for the first time since Naomi Novik's Uprooted， I was actually INTO a fantasy novel。 With fairies？ Impossible。But there were a lot of things that made the MC stand out， interestingly， from the rest in the book。 I did read the audio book version online， but I think I'm going to read the hardcover for some more answers。Not that the story had any， I just want to cover my tracks before doing a video on it。From the beginning， I had a lot of hope for the main character。 I had hope for the story， and for the first time since Naomi Novik's Uprooted， I was actually INTO a fantasy novel。 With fairies？ Impossible。But there were a lot of things that made the MC stand out， interestingly， from the rest in the book。 While it's a bit of a cliche to play the tomboy chosen one， my main aggravation is similar to ACOTAR。 Only， instead of being told the MC is GREAT at everything， and so likeable， in this novel it's the opposite。 She had all the makings of an underdog to PROVE herself to the Fae that she is more than mortal， and a chance to represent us， the readers， in a new light to a world in our imaginations。But alas， this YA novel， too， was severely lacking。While comparing the job of a spy over knighthood to a mistress against a wife （very VERY short-sighted， but okay） she does NOTHING to even prove her worth as that。 She proves nothing of what she's learned。 She waits until the last minute， when it's too late and she and the others are supposed to 'keep an eye out for anything suspicious'， that's not what a SPY does。 That's what a BODYGUARD does。 Spies are cunning， intellectual， stealthy， and they would have to be very VERY clever in a fairy realm， something which goes COMPLETELY against her strengths。 She's been training her whole life at HARD combat for knighthood， a very different type of power to that of a spy， and has done nothing save the 'gift of the forked tongue' to prove she might be useful。 In fact， just the opposite。 She's reckless， emotional， biased， and above all has no foresight or planning for what she does， she just goes in half-cocked without even getting so much as a LAYOUT of the place， so much so she is not even made aware of the relatives living inside said palace who will OBVIOUSLY recognize her。Why the FUCK would you send her in there when you know she and one of the relatives goes to the same school since childhood？ It makes no sense， and without even so much as a sniff of suspicion or planning？ They tell her to just 'find something'， not even giving her an inkling as to what she is looking for， what she is hunting for， or where to even start。 There is no strategy in this book， and the plot which could have been DELICIOUSLY twisted is all of a sudden thrown out for an enemies- to lovers story。 I almost spit out my coffee when they kissed。Are you FUCKING kidding me？ What brought this on？ For him， obviously the tension， but build up the tension on her end FIRST， she's not the type of character to fall head over heels in love like her SISTER， especially someone who's bullied， humiliated， and mistreated her all of her life。Also， if she's supposedly smart enough to be a spy， why isn't she smart enough to wonder if Carden is just playing her so he can get set free？ The backstory with Madoc and what happened with her family was the PERFECT backstory to set up the confrontation at the end， bringing all of her pent up emotions around full circle， but it doesn't feel earned。 It feels clumsy， half assed， and again like she didn't PLAN it。 She's just going with whatever hail mary the author is going to toss in next。I want to have hope for fantasy YA authors， and I'm not sure if these are just half-drafted stories， but it's so disappointed to see the potential thrown out for REPETIVE filler， stating the obvious sometimes THREE TIMES on the SAME PAGE just for page count， and then toss out a REALLY GOOD IDEA， a really good plot， compromising the whole thing because all the readers care about these days is who's going to sleep with whom， and how steamy is it going to get。Ya'll need to just get laid， cuz the virgin horniness out here is blocking me from a better view。 。。。more
