Summary

From the New York Times bestselling author of Mexican Gothic comes a pulse-pounding neo-noir that reimagines vampire lore。

Welcome to Mexico City, an oasis in a sea of vampires。 Domingo, a lonely garbage-collecting street kid, is just trying to survive its heavily policed streets when a jaded vampire on the run swoops into his life。 Atl, the descendant of Aztec blood drinkers, is smart, beautiful, and dangerous。 Domingo is mesmerized。

Atl needs to quickly escape the city, far from the rival narco-vampire clan relentlessly pursuing her。 Her plan doesn't include Domingo, but little by little, Atl finds herself warming up to the scrappy young man and his undeniable charm。 As the trail of corpses stretches behind her, local cops and crime bosses both start closing in。

Vampires, humans, cops, and criminals collide in the dark streets of Mexico City。 Do Atl and Domingo even stand a chance of making it out alive? Or will the city devour them all?

Vampires。 I really don't like vampire books。 Overwhelming sexual desire, spreading the problem to every person the vampire uses, incredibly seductive, yada yada yada。 But, I loved this book。 Moreno-Garcia taps into ancient aztec mythology and juxtaposes it to modern issues in a way that is exciting and enlightening and oddly enjoyable。 The ending is a surprise, and maybe comes a little too soon, I enjoyed being in the strange world created in this book, and I really didn't want to leave it。 I th Vampires。 I really don't like vampire books。 Overwhelming sexual desire, spreading the problem to every person the vampire uses, incredibly seductive, yada yada yada。 But, I loved this book。 Moreno-Garcia taps into ancient aztec mythology and juxtaposes it to modern issues in a way that is exciting and enlightening and oddly enjoyable。 The ending is a surprise, and maybe comes a little too soon, I enjoyed being in the strange world created in this book, and I really didn't want to leave it。 I think the vampire felt the same way。 。。。more

Domingo deserves the world and I would kill to give it to him😫❤If you like vampires, morally grey characters + unhinged murderous ones with a little bit of blood (meaning A LOT) this book is a perfect read。

Yet again another book by Silvia Morena-Garcia I could not put down。 Thrilling, enthralling, interesting。 I loved every second of this。 Also so many great details about Mexico City。 I felt like I was living in the real Mexico City and the alternate one at once。 I can't wait to read her next。 Yet again another book by Silvia Morena-Garcia I could not put down。 Thrilling, enthralling, interesting。 I loved every second of this。 Also so many great details about Mexico City。 I felt like I was living in the real Mexico City and the alternate one at once。 I can't wait to read her next。 。。。more

More noir than horror, with a fresh Latinx take on vampires set in Mexico City。 I always enjoy Moreno-Garcia’s heroines, and her writing continues to work for me。 This book was not an exception。

A solid vampire story, riffing on both the Dracula and Twilight tropes, set in a colorful Mexico City and using the conceit of vampires as a separate species with distinct regional subspecies rather than being something that's done to humans。 The romance (and the drug family politics) is real and gritty, and the themes of economic inequality is well-developed for such a fast-moving plot。 A solid vampire story, riffing on both the Dracula and Twilight tropes, set in a colorful Mexico City and using the conceit of vampires as a separate species with distinct regional subspecies rather than being something that's done to humans。 The romance (and the drug family politics) is real and gritty, and the themes of economic inequality is well-developed for such a fast-moving plot。 。。。more

Brutal, bleak and hopeful all at once。 Set against a fascinating backdrop of another Mexico and a set of vampires of types that are absolutely thrilling。 This gives me all the same feelings that Lost Souls did in the mid 2000s。

Me: maybe this one will happy a happy ending! Nope。 My heart is still in pieces。 But it was worth it。 What a thrilling ride that I could not easily predict。 I loved the gritty, alt-reality Mexico City, and the description of “neon noir” was perfect。 The characters were engaging, the villains villainous, and I really felt like I lived in a reality where vampire species existed。 I have trouble visualizing things so I have difficulty with books that tell instead of show, and Moreno-Garcia did an ex Me: maybe this one will happy a happy ending! 2-2。5 starsThis may just earn the the title of most boring vampire story I’ve ever read。 Sadly。 I loved the premise of Certain Dark Things。 Taking place in Mexico City, it exists in a world where ten species of vampires exist alongside humans。 In 1970, humans learned of vampires living beside them and naturally most became intolerant of their presence。 Mexico is a (relatively) safe haven, where many vampires immigrated and have taken up the drug trade, forming rival factions and gangs throughout 2-2。5 starsThis may just earn the the title of most boring vampire story I’ve ever read。 Sadly。 I loved the premise of Certain Dark Things。 Taking place in Mexico City, it exists in a world where ten species of vampires exist alongside humans。 In 1970, humans learned of vampires living beside them and naturally most became intolerant of their presence。 Mexico is a (relatively) safe haven, where many vampires immigrated and have taken up the drug trade, forming rival factions and gangs throughout the country。 Atl, our protagonist, is from the Mexican species of vampire, a species hailing from the pre-Colombian and Aztec days。 She has bird of prey-like features when eating, and she is on the run from a gang of invading European vampires, Necros, that are your more traditional type of vampire。 The symbolism here of colonization and domination is spot on。 Sadly, I just didn’t connect to the characters enough to launch this to a higher rating。 Nick is a cartoon villain, drooling for blood and creepy, rapey revenge。 As this was written early in Moreno-Garcia’s career and this is a republishing, it makes sense。 The ideas are there, the execution, not so much。 I loathed the romance。 Domingo’s devoted crushing, sure。 Atl doing it with a seventeen year old and claiming to fall in love when she’s just lonely and the author expecting us to ship it? No, thank you。 Atl is in her twenties too。 Ugh。 It didn’t make sense。 And it was gross。 。。。more

This was one of the most unique books I've ever read。 Moreno-Garcia is a master of voice and this novel perfectly showcases her abilities。 Follow the inhabitants of a grungy Mexico city bathed in neon light and futuristic tech as each chapter brings you into the mind of the various stakeholders (pun intended) in a cross country cross species gang war。 This book immersed me with its seamless blend of sci fi, horror, and the paranormal。 Do I think everyone will enjoy this book? This is told from multiple viewpoints and while all of them are necessary to get the full effect and atmosphere of the Mexico City some are not as compelling as others。 Atl and Domingo are both three dimensional characters which is so so so nice especially in a book that has a male/female team as the lead protagonists。 It doesn’t lean on dumb tropes and they both have nice character arcs。 I really loved them both individually and their dynamic when together。 The lore is so cool and everyone is m This is told from multiple viewpoints and while all of them are necessary to get the full effect and atmosphere of the Mexico City some are not as compelling as others。 Atl and Domingo are both three dimensional characters which is so so so nice especially in a book that has a male/female team as the lead protagonists。 It doesn’t lean on dumb tropes and they both have nice character arcs。 I really loved them both individually and their dynamic when together。 The lore is so cool and everyone is morally grey。 The ending is abrupt and perfect。 。。。more

I don't know what is in Silvia Moreno-Garcia's head to get her to think of all these stories, but I want it。This book was dark and gritty and FUN。 I loved the setting, Mexico City, and I loooooved all the character perspectives I got to read from。 SMG likes to really show you how despicable her villains are, so I spent a decent chunk of the book in his head, which of course made me hate him all the more and root for the protagonists。I do feel like this is one of those books that is difficult to I don't know what is in Silvia Moreno-Garcia's head to get her to think of all these stories, but I want it。This book was dark and gritty and FUN。 I loved the setting, Mexico City, and I loooooved all the character perspectives I got to read from。 SMG likes to really show you how despicable her villains are, so I spent a decent chunk of the book in his head, which of course made me hate him all the more and root for the protagonists。I do feel like this is one of those books that is difficult to describe, so I'll leave you with this: if you like vampires and crime dramas, this is a book to pick up! 。。。more

I really love the concept of this story。 Vampire narcos but they're all different species! Enjoyed reading this one。 A different take on a Vampire Story。Mexico City setting, Aztec mythology and the gang-war take as well as different breeds of Vampire and the fact that they are widely known about。 Good Vampire book, quite violent in places, and a cool dog - which is clearly the best part。

A DNF for me, unfortunately。 I thought the character and world design were brilliant, but the writing was so choppy and almost rough that I found it really hard to stay focused, so ultimately I just gave up ^^; I think this would definitely work for the right reader, but the writing just made it too hard for me to push through。(I received a review copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review。 All thoughts and feelings are my own。)

An excellent concept on the classic Vampire story, weaving folklore into creating various types of vampires。 The neon-noir Mexico City setting enriches the story and makes me yearn to see this on screen。This is one of those noir/action reads that would make a brilliant movie。
