Summary

Prepare for the jaw-dropping finale of Sabaa Tahir's beloved New York Times bestselling An Ember in the Ashes fantasy series, and discover: Who will survive the storm?

Picking up just a few months after A Reaper at the Gates left off。。。

The long-imprisoned jinn are on the attack, wreaking bloody havoc in villages and cities alike。 But for the Nightbringer, vengeance on his human foes is just the beginning。

At his side, Commandant Keris Veturia declares herself Empress, and calls for the heads of any and all who defy her rule。 At the top of the list? The Blood Shrike and her remaining family。

Laia of Serra, now allied with the Blood Shrike, struggles to recover from the loss of the two people most important to her。 Determined to stop the approaching apocalypse, she throws herself into the destruction of the Nightbringer。 In the process, she awakens an ancient power that could lead her to victory--or to an unimaginable doom。

And deep in the Waiting Place, the Soul Catcher seeks only to forget the life--and love--he left behind。 Yet doing so means ignoring the trail of murder left by the Nightbringer and his jinn。 To uphold his oath and protect the human world from the supernatural, the Soul Catcher must look beyond the borders of his own land。 He must take on a mission that could save--or destroy--all that he knows。

This is the grand finale, and it’s over。 If I could rate it 10 stars I would。 The pain from reading it was overwhelming。 I didn’t expect that much sadness, but Sabaa Tahir always delivers。 Elias and Laia’s love has surpassed it’s boundaries especially the amount it went through。 Helene Aquila is my baby。 She deserved the world and more。 I am still reeling over her losses, yet she conquered it stronger than ever。 Laia of Serra also understands loss。 Not everyone makes it out of a final battle。 This is the grand finale, and it’s over。 If I could rate it 10 stars I would。 The pain from reading it was overwhelming。 I didn’t expect that much sadness, but Sabaa Tahir always delivers。 Elias and Laia’s love has surpassed it’s boundaries especially the amount it went through。 Helene Aquila is my baby。 She deserved the world and more。 I am still reeling over her losses, yet she conquered it stronger than ever。 Laia of Serra also understands loss。 Not everyone makes it out of a final battle。 Elias understands a loss especially of a soul to be lost to much more than death。This series will always be one of my favorites and be close to my heart。 I have a connection with all of them now。 。。。more

Interesting。 I can honestly say I've never read anything like it。 I'd like to know if it is based on some Middle East/Eastern European or African stories。。 could be elsewhere, but that's the feel I get。 An academy that trains children to become killers。 The telling of stories that can alter lives。。。 Cool stuff。 Interesting。 I can honestly say I've never read anything like it。 I'd like to know if it is based on some Middle East/Eastern European or African stories。。 could be elsewhere, but that's the feel I get。 An academy that trains children to become killers。 The telling of stories that can alter lives。。。 Cool stuff。 。。。more

Currently suffer book hangover。I'm torn between giving it 4 or 5 stars, because the conclusion didn't satisfy me。 I hate that I loved the series so much but the ending left me heartbroken (badly)。 What is it with the author these days and torturing their characters (and the readers)。I read the first & second installment back in 2018, so I only have so little memory about events happen in the series。 It feels like the story took different direction in the third & fourth installment。 I'm not rooti Currently suffer book hangover。I'm torn between giving it 4 or 5 stars, because the conclusion didn't satisfy me。 I hate that I loved the series so much but the ending left me heartbroken (badly)。 What is it with the author these days and torturing their characters (and the readers)。I read the first & second installment back in 2018, so I only have so little memory about events happen in the series。 It feels like the story took different direction in the third & fourth installment。 I'm not rooting for Laia or Elias anymore, but Helene, now The Blood Shrike。 The POV jump between the three of them but I only care so much on Helene's story this time。So many happens I can't make it brief, I'm too heartbroken。 Perhaps later I would make decent review, after I get through this painful book hangover。 Do read the series, it's definitely worth your time。 And prepare your heart my friends, don't say I didn't warn you。Now excuse me, I want to crawl into a cave & cry for days。 Family, please don't need me。 。。。more

I suppose those convinient magic powers were only reserved for Laia。 His death felt rushed, unnecessary and it didn't improve the plot of the book the slightest。 Laia and Elias love story was very obvious from the getgo。 Their annoying back and forth love drama made it just more clear they were going to HaPpiLlY end up together。 Maybe it's just me because I didn't find Laias and Elias love particularly entertaining nor unique but I truly wouldn't have minded a tragic end to their love story。 I don't think it would've ruined the story, in fact it could've made it more interesting。 And then perhaps Helene could've been left the fudge alone together with her Harper。 I didn't read the final chapter until a week later, and I just got angrier reading Helenes POV。 Such a dumb and simple ending。 She deserved a better ending and Avitas death was too obvious。 I'm actually not joking when I say that I walked around feeling sad for a couple of days later just thinking about poor Helene。Some other side parts that disappointed me was Keris Veturias back story。 I kept waiting for it, hoping to learn more about her character。 I waited for the epic killing battle when she'd finally be gone and instead it was such a lame death for such a powerful character。 No real deep back story and just poof the commandant was suddenly dead and convinently Cook never died and just randomly appears out of nowhere to kill her in perfect timing for the "epic" battle。Basically the entire ending of the book felt rushed and you ended the book with questions instead of answers。 My thoughts on Sabaa Tahir as an author:It sometimes felt like ST was biting off more than she could chew。 She kept bring so much new information and storylines but without sometimes clarifying and solving her old ones。 She often never went too deep with any of the new information she shared and sometimes didn't even completely explain certain events。 Pybiggest issue with ST was her lack of world building however。 I'm very visual as a person and one or the reasons I enjoy reading fantasy books is because of the world building descriptions。 It helps me feel like I'm really inside this world and living in it too together with the characters。 Instead I often caught myself feeling frustrated with how ST described locations in the series in general。 She'd start a nerve-wracking chapter where you're on the edge but you only have a vague idea of what their surroundings are like。 So you make up the surrounding yourself to better connect with what's happening to the characters。 Then out of nowhere in the middle of the action scene she begins to describe the surroundings and suddenly they're nothing like how you imagined them since she didn't disclose it in the beginning。 I basically often felt frustrated trying to understand what kind of environment the characters were living in。 I wanted to build up the world in my head so much more than she allowed me to。 Lastly ST is fantastic at creating actions scenes。 I've never felt my heart beat as hard as it did while I read certain chapters。 She really knows how to add excitement to her stories。Overall I'm disappointed with how the fourth book ended。 Avitas death kind of ruined the entire story for me because I felt it was a lazy ending for Helene to just suffer some more。 There were of course moments I enjoyed in the book too, I really grew fond of Musa。 But ithas disappointing enough to only earn 2 stars from me。 。。。more

4。5 stars。 Absolutely loved this fantasy series; the ambiance, the characters and Sabaa Tahir’s way with words kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the entire book。 Admittedly, the ending wasn’t what I had been hoping for, but it did work and I guess it was a lot more realistic/original if you will。 I will definitely be looking out for more of Sabaa’s work in the future!
