Summary

Nineteen eighty-four is often referred to as one of the definitive texts of modern dystopian literature。 Written in 1948,the book serves as a powerful warning against totalitarian regimes and extreme political ideologies。 The pitfalls of a totalitarian regime are symbolized by "big brother" an over arching figure that dictates the lives of the citizens of oceania。 Orwell penned this novel at a critical time in history, when a rise in totalitarian states had culminated in world war ii。this was the time of hitler, stalin and mussolini。 It was also the dawn of the post-atomic age, a time when countries had only just come to realize the terrible and annihilating potential of the human mind。 It was this socio-political clime the became the breeding ground for nineteen eighty-four。 More than sixty years since it was published; nineteen eighty four still remains one of the most hauntingly terrifying portrayals of the future of mankind。 Future where everything belongs to the state and on one is free。

What a twisted and incomprehensible tale, but no other book has come close to the reality we live in now。

4。75 ⭐️I enjoyed this book so much more than I expected! 1984 offered a unique insight into what our world could be, it really makes you think about how and why our world functions the way it does, or what if it was different?

I read this because it's basically a common reference that I had managed to skip in high school。 I'm not sure why people reference this so much。 Maybe it's more illusory to high school students。 I guess I'm glad I read it, now I officially know the proper reference。 I read this because it's basically a common reference that I had managed to skip in high school。 I'm not sure why people reference this so much。 Maybe it's more illusory to high school students。 I guess I'm glad I read it, now I officially know the proper reference。 。。。more

My rating would be 4。5 but since I cannot give that then I am rounding it to 5。 I will start this review by quoting Bill Kerwin ``This book is far from perfect。 Its characters lack depth, its rhetoric is sometimes didactic, its plot (well, half of it anyway) was lifted from Zumyatin’s We, and the lengthy Goldstein treatise shoved into the middle is a flaw which alters the structure of the novel like a scar disfigures a face。"Aside from that I have to admit that the prose in the first half of the My rating would be 4。5 but since I cannot give that then I am rounding it to 5。 I will start this review by quoting Bill Kerwin ``This book is far from perfect。 Its characters lack depth, its rhetoric is sometimes didactic, its plot (well, half of it anyway) was lifted from Zumyatin’s We, and the lengthy Goldstein treatise shoved into the middle is a flaw which alters the structure of the novel like a scar disfigures a face。"Aside from that I have to admit that the prose in the first half of the book was not as appealing/interesting。 I sometimes felt bored because it lacked action。 However, this mattered not, as the story progressed and the captivating part of the book was not in its storyline or any other literary device it utilized but, the prophetic writing that mirrors our reality and reflects the future。 I am not going to insert any example as there are many in depth reviews on this book that have done that already。 I mainly want to express the sadism and trepidation this leaves in your heart and soul。 I want to quote Lowkey words of Antonio Gramsci "Pessimism of the Intellect, Optimism of the Will"。 The methods and systemic oppression used in Oceania is palpable to some degree contemporarily if still in its rudimentary stages and unless people educate themselves and stay cognizant of the insidious practices, we will end up creating our own Oceania。 From a literary point of view, I feel like the story ended abruptly and the denouement was rushed。 I would have loved to have gotten to know more of Winston's post change mentality。 Besides, I believe we would have all been satisfied if he died with hatred and blemished thoughts as to be the first to defeat the party but realism is stronger than fantasy。 I would highly recommend this book as well as Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, and We by Yevgeny Zamyatin。 Finally, I would like to include this letter from Huxley "Orwell french teacher" to Orwell opining on 1984 "Wrightwood。 Cal。21 October, 1949Dear Mr。 Orwell,It was very kind of you to tell your publishers to send me a copy of your book。 It arrived as I was in the midst of a piece of work that required much reading and consulting of references; and since poor sight makes it necessary for me to ration my reading, I had to wait a long time before being able to embark on Nineteen Eighty-Four。Agreeing with all that the critics have written of it, I need not tell you, yet once more, how fine and how profoundly important the book is。 May I speak instead of the thing with which the book deals — the ultimate revolution? The first hints of a philosophy of the ultimate revolution — the revolution which lies beyond politics and economics, and which aims at total subversion of the individual’s psychology and physiology — are to be found in the Marquis de Sade, who regarded himself as the continuator, the consummator, of Robespierre and Babeuf。 The philosophy of the ruling minority in Nineteen Eighty-Four is a sadism which has been carried to its logical conclusion by going beyond sex and denying it。 Whether in actual fact the policy of the boot-on-the-face can go on indefinitely seems doubtful。 My own belief is that the ruling oligarchy will find less arduous and wasteful ways of governing and of satisfying its lust for power, and these ways will resemble those which I described in Brave New World。 I have had occasion recently to look into the history of animal magnetism and hypnotism, and have been greatly struck by the way in which, for a hundred and fifty years, the world has refused to take serious cognizance of the discoveries of Mesmer, Braid, Esdaile, and the rest。Partly because of the prevailing materialism and partly because of prevailing respectability, nineteenth-century philosophers and men of science were not willing to investigate the odder facts of psychology for practical men, such as politicians, soldiers and policemen, to apply in the field of government。 Thanks to the voluntary ignorance of our fathers, the advent of the ultimate revolution was delayed for five or six generations。 Another lucky accident was Freud’s inability to hypnotize successfully and his consequent disparagement of hypnotism。 This delayed the general application of hypnotism to psychiatry for at least forty years。 But now psycho-analysis is being combined with hypnosis; and hypnosis has been made easy and indefinitely extensible through the use of barbiturates, which induce a hypnoid and suggestible state in even the most recalcitrant subjects。Within the next generation I believe that the world’s rulers will discover that infant conditioning and narco-hypnosis are more efficient, as instruments of government, than clubs and prisons, and that the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging and kicking them into obedience。 In other words, I feel that the nightmare of Nineteen Eighty-Four is destined to modulate into the nightmare of a world having more resemblance to that which I imagined in Brave New World。 The change will be brought about as a result of a felt need for increased efficiency。 Meanwhile, of course, there may be a large-scale biological and atomic war — in which case we shall have nightmares of other and scarcely imaginable kinds。Thank you once again for the book。Yours sincerely,Aldous Huxley" 。。。more

I understand the point of the book but it could have been executed so much better。 The characters are boring and lifeless, misogyny is rife and I do not care for them。 Overrated but decent idea。

This book is, as they would say it in 1984, 'Triple Good'。 Honestly the premise of this book is super scary, the fact that they change so much of the past so that Big Brother is right, always。 You are told what to do, who to marry and have kids with。 It's all scary af。 Good book, bit long considering and very in-depth on the writing。 Still enjoyable considering it is a classic。 This book is, as they would say it in 1984, 'Triple Good'。 Honestly the premise of this book is super scary, the fact that they change so much of the past so that Big Brother is right, always。 You are told what to do, who to marry and have kids with。 It's all scary af。 Good book, bit long considering and very in-depth on the writing。 Still enjoyable considering it is a classic。 。。。more

I tried reading this book in high school for a school project and got bored/ ran out of time to actually read it properly。 Now that I'm older with more time, I gave it a shot again。 I was right when I was younger。 This book is super boring。 It's a really cool concept that gets its point across well, but it could have been done in half the pages。 George Orwell spends half the time writing about how much the main charter wants to have sex with the other main character。 (also trigger warning。 It's I tried reading this book in high school for a school project and got bored/ ran out of time to actually read it properly。 Now that I'm older with more time, I gave it a shot again。 I was right when I was younger。 This book is super boring。 It's a really cool concept that gets its point across well, but it could have been done in half the pages。 George Orwell spends half the time writing about how much the main charter wants to have sex with the other main character。 (also trigger warning。 It's a very unhealthy relationship where he begins by saying how much he wants to r*pe her。) I don't see why this book gets as much praise as it does since it's so well known even by people who haven't read it。 I was completely turned off from the book so early on because of this line。The characters are completely one dimensional and does not have much depth even with how many extra pages are added to talk about these characters。 。。。more

Personally, this book pained me to read and in all bored me to death。 The premise of the book is that we are in a dystopian future with a corrupt government similar to, and I'm assuming based off of, communism。 The government is controlling of everything。 There is a man named Winston who defies the government by having thoughts against the government that he keeps in a journal。 He then falls in love with a woman, which is forbidden, and gets caught in a sting operation set up by the government。 Personally, this book pained me to read and in all bored me to death。 The premise of the book is that we are in a dystopian future with a corrupt government similar to, and I'm assuming based off of, communism。 The government is controlling of everything。 There is a man named Winston who defies the government by having thoughts against the government that he keeps in a journal。 He then falls in love with a woman, which is forbidden, and gets caught in a sting operation set up by the government。 The government then tortures Winston until he turns on his love thus losing against the government he so avidly defied。 This book is one of those books where the protagonist you so strongly rooted for fails。 Nobody wins in this book。 Don't waste your time。 It sounds cool and all and it's a classic but it's an abhorred classic。 Absolutely dismally written and bland。 He may have been a literary master but his story telling skills were lacking。 George Orwell is a great author that failed with this book。 He failed my imagination。 Boring beyond compare。 。。。more

The book as you may have keenly observed takes place in 1984。 Now, at the time when the book was released that was far in the future。 A future where assumedly the Communist party had won World War 2。 With all the freedoms and liberties banned and forbidden。 I could go into more depth on the plot of the book and the characters。 But frankly this book isn't worth the time。 If it can even be called a book。 I am unfamiliar in the other works of George Orwell。 He could have written some really good st The book as you may have keenly observed takes place in 1984。 Now, at the time when the book was released that was far in the future。 A future where assumedly the Communist party had won World War 2。 With all the freedoms and liberties banned and forbidden。 I could go into more depth on the plot of the book and the characters。 But frankly this book isn't worth the time。 If it can even be called a book。 I am unfamiliar in the other works of George Orwell。 He could have written some really good stuff for all I know。 But this isn't a book。 It is thoughts from the mind of George Orwell of why totalitarianism is bad and should be prevented。 In other words it is a combination of essays that have been expanded to 328 pages。 Then painted over with a fresh coat of a story as an afterthought。 It is extremely dull, boring, and lacks any personality。 To add on top of that, the main character then goes and ruins any takeaways with his spineless pathetic life。 。。。more

I can't tell whether I like this book or not。 there were a lot of infodumps that were sometimes tiring to read, and the characters are also not too lovable。 But I found it interesting how George Orwell could write about a time and come up with a language (newspeak) and the policies and complicated understanding behind the party。 I can't tell whether I like this book or not。 there were a lot of infodumps that were sometimes tiring to read, and the characters are also not too lovable。 But I found it interesting how George Orwell could write about a time and come up with a language (newspeak) and the policies and complicated understanding behind the party。 。。。more
