Summary

For anyone who's ever wished to, but had trouble starting, keeping, or finishing a journal or sketchbook comes Wreck This Journal, an illustrated book that features a subversive collection of prompts, asking readers to muster up their best mistake- and mess-making abilities to fill the pages of the book (and destroy them)。 Acclaimed illustrator Keri Smith encourages journalers to engage in "destructive" acts-poking holes through pages, adding photos and defacing them, painting with coffee, and more-in order to experience the true creative process。 Readers discover a new way of art and journal making-and new ways to escape the fear of the blank page and fully engage in the creative process。

Keri Smith helped inspire the structure around my own book Your Next Big Idea。 Wreck This Journal is a freeing, fun, and true outside of the box creative tool。 I could not recommend it enough。

Not really。Has it improved my mental health。 Not at all。Has it made me anymore creative? No。Has it made me happy? No。Despite getting all creative freedom to do whatever the book's owner wants to do with it。。。。 I cannot。 I have a feeling that in order for me to to be happy, I'll need to do some more modifications on it and after that it's going to feel even more waste of money because I could have just picked either a book that I don't want to read or book I do not like and go from there or bind some sheets of paper together and work it from there。 At the meanwhile my sketchbooks have started to get filled with others things too than just from drawings。 One of them expanded four times it's normal thickeness and to be honest, I don't have no idea what or how did that happen。 It also has flaw that if your work with wet medious, the paper will do awful things。 Also, if I were to make my own, nobody else would find it fun or enjoyable。 They would be just as lost with it as I am at the moment with this one。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I thought this was cool enough to buy as a gift 。。。 I eventually got it delivered! This is one of the more refreshing, 'creative self discovery," books I've seen。 It's effective because it allows you to step outside yourself and have fun, get silly and laugh out loud for real, not just lol because its the appropriate response to the flow of conversation。 It helped me get back into my own stride for writing after completing a few challenges before sending it off to its intended owner。 Definitely I thought this was cool enough to buy as a gift 。。。 I eventually got it delivered! Get a copy for yourself no matter your profession! It might be the thing that opens your mind of helps you realise "that something" you've stressed over for weeks of months 。。。 dare to imply years for myself - it was a few years worth of barriers that grew up & over, higher and higher blanketing my creative everything, higher than my muse could or would climb。。。 The purpose is fun with fun。 。。。more

I got a copy of this book in a goodiebag once。 Otherwise, I would never have owned it, because I don't think I would ever spend money on this type of book。 I was happy when I got it, though。 Wreck This Journal basically is a book that contains a lot of different creative prompts (usually one prompt a page), and you "read" it by doing those prompts。 Most of them were fun to do, some I cheated on, and some I skipped。 I only skipped three or so, because they were too much work。 One, for instance, a I got a copy of this book in a goodiebag once。 Otherwise, I would never have owned it, because I don't think I would ever spend money on this type of book。 I was happy when I got it, though。 Wreck This Journal basically is a book that contains a lot of different creative prompts (usually one prompt a page), and you "read" it by doing those prompts。 Most of them were fun to do, some I cheated on, and some I skipped。 I only skipped three or so, because they were too much work。 One, for instance, asks you to collect post stamps。 I don't know about others people, but I rarely get physical mail that contain stamps。 In the end I just drew some stamps lol。 Another prompt asks you to mail the book to yourself。 Just。。 no。 That's a waste of money and not a very nice thing to do to postal companies, because you are basically wasting their time。 If you own this book, have fun with it。 Try to be as creative as possible, or if you don't want to do that, just do the bare minimum。 In the end, you'll get a book that contains some of your memories。 If you don't own this book and you are wondering whether you should get it: I wouldn't necessarily recommend it。 Personally, I think it's nice to get as a gift, but not really something to buy for yourself。 。。。more

It's been what, two years since I started this bad boy? God, it's disgusting I'm shocked it didn't attract ants。 Either way, it was really nice to have around, great stress relief, and I enjoyed every moment of it。 Counting it as a reading book because I put so much time and effort into it。 Absolutely amazing。 Buy this book if you want to have a blast。 It's been what, two years since I started this bad boy? I’m not usually a fan of books like this where the book itself is a gimmick, but I was pleasantly surprised by this one。 It was given to me by a colleague (shout out to Fran at Wycombe Arts Centre) as a Christmas present, and I’d already heard quite a bit about it from BookTube and so I was looking forward to getting stuck in。I ended up using it as an excuse to film a new video series for my YouTube channel, even though it’s been done before。 I was pleasantly surprised by how effective it was fo I’m not usually a fan of books like this where the book itself is a gimmick, but I was pleasantly surprised by this one。 It was given to me by a colleague (shout out to Fran at Wycombe Arts Centre) as a Christmas present, and I’d already heard quite a bit about it from BookTube and so I was looking forward to getting stuck in。I ended up using it as an excuse to film a new video series for my YouTube channel, even though it’s been done before。 I was pleasantly surprised by how effective it was for tackling my anxiety, even though I had heard that it was good for it。 I don’t know, sometimes stuff like this ends up being more stressful than relaxing, but that wasn’t the case here。Basically, it was a lot of fun to tackle all of the different challenges, and it’s definitely something that I’d recommend doing if you’ve been thinking about it。 I can also attest to the fact that it makes for an excellent gift, and indeed it’s probably one of the best presents that I got this Christmas。 That might not be saying much though, because I think there’s a load waiting at my mum’s。 。。。more

My neighbors put out a bunch of books in the spot in our building where people put stuff for other people to take if interested, so I picked this up as a friend of mine had been on about how great it is for quite some time。 I'm a collage and mixed/multimedia artist and destroy books on the regular, so a book built to be destroyed and altered is an interesting idea to me and I'm a bit of a sucker for books that help with creativity and how to change the ways you see the things around you: I'm cle My neighbors put out a bunch of books in the spot in our building where people put stuff for other people to take if interested, so I picked this up as a friend of mine had been on about how great it is for quite some time。 I'm a collage and mixed/multimedia artist and destroy books on the regular, so a book built to be destroyed and altered is an interesting idea to me and I'm a bit of a sucker for books that help with creativity and how to change the ways you see the things around you: I'm clear that anything is an art supply if you just use it properly。This book is interesting and it does what it's intended to do, but there are definitely some issues with the author's assumptions about the reader, some of which are ableist。First, there's a page where the instructions are to draw with your left hand。 Not your non-dominant hand, your left hand。 Does the author not know that many people are left-handed or ambidextrous and normally draw with their left hands? I hit this page and thought, what's special about drawing with the hand I normally draw with? No idea。Second, there are some seriously gross and unsanitary suggestions made here。 Make an ugly drawing, using ugly materials, where the author suggests poop and dead things。 I'm totally into unconventional supplies, but there's a limit and the limit is "do I want to keep this around my apartment where it may stink and attract bugs?" There are also a lot of "mark the page with food" suggestions that are definitely set up in a particular way - this includes "put coffee on this page!" like, yes, coffee can be used to mark paper, but I hate coffee and don't ever have it around; and "eat a bunch of brightly-colored candy and lick this page!" which assumes people can have food coloring safely。 Finally, there are a lot of suggestions that make assumptions about the user's mobility, living space, and gender, including things like attaching string to the book and dragging it behind you on a walk, climbing something and dropping it from high up, picking up the journal without using your hands, and attaching string and swinging it around you。 I think these things are valid as ways to get people past the idea that books are inherently precious and you should be careful with them, but the author is assuming that people live somewhere that it's safe to walk around and where the weather won't actually completely destroy the book (we've got snow, slush, ice, and salt on the ground here as I write this), that people live in a space where they can swing something around on a string without breaking anything or hurting anyone, some people will pick things up without using their hands as the norm due to disability, and plenty of people can't safely climb stuff or roll the book down a hill (and retrieve it) because of disability issues。 There's also no "mark this page with your mobility device" or "roll over this page with your wheelchair" to even it out。 So this is both more ableist than necessary, and physically battering the book or taking it in the shower does nothing for me in terms of creative exercise, though it does make me wonder if the author intended people to take it into the shower before or after marking it with poop and dead stuff。 I’d also have expected makeup to be suggested as a marking tool - I’m not femme enough to wear makeup on the regular but it’s something most of us at least have access to at home or can easily get from our local pharmacy bargain bin - perhaps that was too threatening for the editors who wanted to make sure the book wasn’t full of GIRL STUFF, EW! I do think there's a lot of interesting ideas in the book, I just think it could have been done better and in a way that is more inclusive。 Like, why no suggestions for lighting pages on fire? Soaking pages in dye? Cutting out patterns with a razor or scalpel? Using it as a coaster? Folding the page into shapes while not cutting it out? In conclusion, it's a fun idea with a mediocre execution and I don't particularly recommend it。 。。。more
