Marianne Dashwood wears her heart on her sleeve, and when she falls in love with the dashing but unsuitable John Willoughby she ignores her sister Elinor's warning that her impulsive behaviour leaves her open to gossip and innuendo。 Meanwhile Elinor, always sensitive to social convention, is struggling to conceal her own romantic disappointment, even from those closest to her。 Through their parallel experience of love - and its threatened loss - the sisters learn that sense must mix with sensibility if they are to find personal happiness in a society where status and money govern the rules of love。

my controversial opinion is that this was better than pride and prejudice

Fabs

I have utterly enjoyed this book! It strongly reminded me of “Pride and Prejudice” with all its misunderstandings and societal demanded common sense keeping parties from truly speaking with each other under the guidance of honesty and well-wishing。 I am really looking forward to reading the remaining novels written by Jane Austen and judging whether “Emma” is doomed to remain the only Austen novel I haven’t grown quite fond of。

I do enjoy this book, I try to read it every once in a while。 I always feel disappointed when I finish bc it’s not pride and prejudice。 Hahaha

In march of 2020 as Covid-19 had just started running rampant across the globe, I found myself suddenly out of work and with a lot of downtime。 So, I began reading my way through whatever cheap books I could get ahold of - unsurprisingly this meant I read a lot of classic literature。 I learnt almost immediately that language has changed greatly in the last century or so, and that even books that I found enjoyable could still prove to be a challenge to read at times (I'm looking at you Jules Vern In march of 2020 as Covid-19 had just started running rampant across the globe, I found myself suddenly out of work and with a lot of downtime。 So, I began reading my way through whatever cheap books I could get ahold of - unsurprisingly this meant I read a lot of classic literature。 I learnt almost immediately that language has changed greatly in the last century or so, and that even books that I found enjoyable could still prove to be a challenge to read at times (I'm looking at you Jules Verne)。It became clear to me quite quickly, why Jane Austen's books are considered classics。 They are so readable despite their age, and have certainly stood the test of time。 Many criticize Sense and Sensibility for the lack of action, but Jane Austen's impeccable ability to write dialogue keeps readers on their toes。 I found myself constantly pining for the next bit of gossip and drama to befall our main characters。 。。。more

This is the fourth Jane Austen I've read and the first book I've annotated ever! Barring books I had to read for school。 I really enjoyed this book。 It did get me thinking about how Austen's books are less about romance and more about Family and Society, because this book barely focused on the two couples who end up together。 She is so good at writing sister relationships though, there were so many conversations that I could totally see happening between me and my sister。 Not only that, but thei This is the fourth Jane Austen I've read and the first book I've annotated ever! Elinor and Marianne have the sweetest sibling relationship so I loved reading from their perspectives, they're such opposites but you understand where both of them are coming from and why they do the things they do。 This book also had some amazing twists and is the first time in an Austen novel where I wasn't sure who would end up with who。 This gives me the vibe of Little Women (the movie) because of the way the sisters' fight and love each other and how despite this being partly about romance Elinor and Marianne have the sweetest sibling relationship so I loved reading from their perspectives, they're such opposites but you understand where both of them are coming from and why they do the things they do。 This book also had some amazing twists and is the first time in an Austen novel where I wasn't sure who would end up with who。 This gives me the vibe of Little Women (the movie) because of the way the sisters' fight and love each other and how despite this being partly about romance I'd say this was more about the domestic issues that come up for women living in Austen's time: death, money, marriage, social society, etc。 and like the movie the topic seems disinteresting until your halfway through and so invested in the outcome of the Dashwood family & friends! I loved it<3 (4。5 stars) 。。。more

Well I was hoping for more illustrations of the characters, but it was lovely to read this again。 I devoured it over the course of a few days once I got into the thick of things。 I enjoy being thrust back into Austen again, and will most likely want a copy of her entire works in this format。 So far only P&P has been published with this illustrator’s additions。 I would love a copy of Persuasion in this vein of work。

That was exhausting。

2 ½ for me。just wasnt my cup of tea。 didnt like the protagonists, the plot is bland at best, the male leads are completely boring and uninteresting… there was absolutely no taste (for me, at least)。that plot twist at the end, tho, did get me!

Was pretty good but a little more dull than P&P or Emma。 Great book。 Really love Elinor。 One of my favourite Jane Austen characters。 The plot is a little boring and it may be a hard read but it’s fine for me。

Sense & Sensibility was a well-written and enjoyable read。 I found myself caught up with all of the twists and turns, particularly regarding the romance。This book was my introduction to Jane Austen and I wish to read Pride & Prejudice soon。I was not fond of the ending of S&S。 It felt rushed and incomplete。 Almost as if Austen realized she needed to wrap up three romances in the last ten pages。 The rest of the book led up to the end so well, I expected something a bit more。

Marianne and Elinor, two opposite people, in ideas and how they perceive world and people, but their sisterly love no boundaries, to the point that they'd grieve for other's misfortunes。 Weirdly enough, I could relate to both of them。 Marianne as my own 17 year self and Elinor, as the person I now am and becoming。 When Marianne says that she'd only love but one person all her life, I felt it because for my teen years, I believed and lived by it too。 My more extrovert and outworldy self would kee Marianne and Elinor, two opposite people, in ideas and how they perceive world and people, but their sisterly love no boundaries, to the point that they'd grieve for other's misfortunes。 Weirdly enough, I could relate to both of them。 Marianne as my own 17 year self and Elinor, as the person I now am and becoming。 When Marianne says that she'd only love but one person all her life, I felt it because for my teen years, I believed and lived by it too。 My more extrovert and outworldy self would keep nothing within herself and scream and show her love for her partner, bawl through the nights, and also speak her mind out loud as does Marianne。 Today, I feel more introverted and keep a watch on my words and on others as does Elinor。 The middle did feel a little stretched out and Marianne's ending to be a little paced, but I enjoyed it nonetheless。Off to Mansfield Park now! 。。。more

This one took me a while… which is reflected in my rating。 A good book with an interesting story, but I couldn’t feel any connection to the sisters particularly。

This is my favourite Austen。 So witty, with such perfect characterisations, especially of the minor players, that at times I laughed out loud。 Of it's day, happyily marrying off a teenager to a man in his mid-thirties, but once you get past that, it's wonderful。 This is my favourite Austen。 So witty, with such perfect characterisations, especially of the minor players, that at times I laughed out loud。 Of it's day, happyily marrying off a teenager to a man in his mid-thirties, but once you get past that, it's wonderful。 。。。more

Honestly, I don’t see why everybody loves this。 If there is an audiobook version, there should also be a law banning it from being listened to while driving: the book is so boring it can put the most determined reader to sleep。 Will someone please tell me what there is to like in this book?

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Austen enjoyable as always。 But I can’t help compare to Pride and Prejudice, and I sympathised with these characters less, and could not be content with the eventual marriage of a young woman to a man twice her age。 Overall the ending wasn’t quite as satisfying。

The perfect way to end my Jane Austen reading project。 For me, this book lands at no。 3 in the top three of the Austen novels with Pride and Prejudice being second and Northanger Abbey first。"The more I know of the world, the more I am convinced that I shall never see a man whom I can really love。 I require so much!" I think I finally understand the sarcasm and wit in Austen's novels after reading this book。 It went over my head when I read Pride and Prejudice in high school, which was very dialogue heavy so was difficult to read between the lines。 Sense and Sensibility in comparison had much more indirect commentary which contained more hidden gems。- Men have really been scoundrels for 200+ years huh- I personally didn't like the ending and found it unsatisfactory。 The two sisters are happily paired up and I think I finally understand the sarcasm and wit in Austen's novels after reading this book。 It went over my head when I read Pride and Prejudice in high school, which was very dialogue heavy so was difficult to read between the lines。 Sense and Sensibility in comparison had much more indirect commentary which contained more hidden gems。- Men have really been scoundrels for 200+ years huh- I personally didn't like the ending and found it unsatisfactory。 The two sisters are happily paired up and married but there wasn't enough development for it to have felt organic。 。。。more

najdłuższe 400 stron w moim życiu chyba, a przeczytałam wszystkie lektury szkolne。 wszystkie postacie prostolinijne, bez głębszego dna, opis głównych bohaterek zawarty w pierwszych 3 stronach pozostaje do końca taki sam。 kobiety są nagrodą czy ładnym dodatkiem dla mężczyzn。 przez całą ksiazke nie wydarzyło się nic CIEKAWEGO。 wieksza przyjemnosc sprawilo mi czytanie dziadow czesc trzecia a to wiele mowi…。。

Becky Ryser

Best Part: Elinor。 And the comparison of acting with sense versus sensibility in similar situations, and the results。 Worst Part: Slow progress and then abrupt changes in the final 20 or so pages。 Also, so many characters—I had a hard time keeping them straight, even until the end。 Overall: Interesting themes, but not as interesting of a book overall。 Pride and Prejudice still wins。

So perceptive and witty。 What a delightful read!

I listened to it in audible, and it was much more engaging than I thought it was going to be。 People didn't like the music, but I thought this allowed for the reader to remain engaged。 I listened to it in audible, and it was much more engaging than I thought it was going to be。 People didn't like the music, but I thought this allowed for the reader to remain engaged。 。。。more
