Summary

Though Lilac's birthright makes her the Queen of Renovia, and a forced marriage made her the Queen of Stavin。 But being a ruler does not mean making the rules。 For Lilac, taking the throne means giving up the opportunity to be with love of her life, the kingdom's assassin, Caledon Holt。

Worse, Cal is forced to leave the castle when a horrific set of magical attacks threatens Lilac's sovereignty。 Now Cal and Lilac will have to battle dark forces separately, even though being together is the only thing that's ever saved them。

In the riveting conclusion to Melissa De La Cruz's fantasy duet, love and magic are at war, and victory rests on a knife's edge。

I picked up this book in hardcover from Amazon。 My personal review of the book is as follows:I understand why from a storytelling point of view things had to happen the way they did I just wish there could've been more character development throughout the book and things seemed to tie up a bit too easily for my personal taste。 I personally rate this book a 4/10 I picked up this book in hardcover from Amazon。 My personal review of the book is as follows:I understand why from a storytelling point of view things had to happen the way they did I just wish there could've been more character development throughout the book and things seemed to tie up a bit too easily for my personal taste。 I personally rate this book a 4/10 。。。more

This book is 80% relationship jealousy 🥱😴I was expecting the secret of the queen to be… idk something more than a way to have secret bootycalls lol。 I kept waiting as Lilac got more and more penned in an restricted for her to find a way out of the role she was born into and say enough was enough but she kept going along with it all, while Cal who’s supposed to be this elite assassin is just a glorified bodyguard sent to do 2 kingdom’s busy work because apparently no one else is capable of having This book is 80% relationship jealousy 🥱😴I was expecting the secret of the queen to be… idk something more than a way to have secret bootycalls lol。 I kept waiting as Lilac got more and more penned in an restricted for her to find a way out of the role she was born into and say enough was enough but she kept going along with it all, while Cal who’s supposed to be this elite assassin is just a glorified bodyguard sent to do 2 kingdom’s busy work because apparently no one else is capable of having a brain。 Also if my mother manipulated me like Lilac’s did, I wouldn’t be so forgiving。 Rip but I’m different。 It wasn’t a terrible book, but it wasn’t good either。 。。。more

This book just felt pointless。 Honestly, I feel like the first book could've just been a bit longer and everything could've been resolved there。 First things first, Book 1 Cal would be extremely disappointed in Book 2 Cal。 He didn't fight for Shadow at all。 He waited to gain permission before he'd even go and see her。 The beauty of forbidden romance books is that they sneak around in the shadows。 We didn't get to see any of their relationship using the Queen's Secret as the author used a time ju This book just felt pointless。 Honestly, I feel like the first book could've just been a bit longer and everything could've been resolved there。 First things first, Book 1 Cal would be extremely disappointed in Book 2 Cal。 He didn't fight for Shadow at all。 He waited to gain permission before he'd even go and see her。 The beauty of forbidden romance books is that they sneak around in the shadows。 We didn't get to see any of their relationship using the Queen's Secret as the author used a time jump here。 And they spent the majority (okay, all) of this book completely apart so there was no time together at all。 Their interactions were what made me like the first book, so instantly that was a major downer on this one because I found myself just not caring anymore? And don't get me started on that ending。 It might just be the world's most anti-climatic ending in a fantasy book ever。 No, I'm not being dramatic。 It was just that awful。 I don't even know how their 'resolution' (I use the term very lightly) is even a believable one。。。 (view spoiler)[ Like how the hell is anyone going to believe that two children, raised in two countries, where each ruler has a lover, are siblings? I'm sorry, what?! Also are you trying to tell me that Lilac and Cal's HEA is them spending forever hiding their relationship from the world? Huh? In what world does that make sense (hide spoiler)]Okay rant over。In all honesty, this book only gets 3 stars due to its cementing of the fact that I love the name Caledon 。。。more

I LOVE THIS DUOLOGY SO MUCH。I read this series in about two days and could not stop reading it。 The characters are vibrant and I could honestly read this book over and over again。 I was a bit let down on the character of Lilac/Shadow this time round though and felt she got more action and a brighter personality in the first book。 Apart from this though I strongly recommend it to anyone young adult who loves their fantasy and magic。

Slow at first, but better later。 Loved the part about the crows。First book was better, but still had slow parts。

Rating: 3 and a halfI was 50/50 with this one。 I didn’t quite take to the story and began to get quite annoyed with the characters but once we hit the halfway mark, everything afterwards was great。 And such a lovey ending to the story too。

I liked book 1 so much but I’m hating book2。 Lilac the queen wants to help the kingdom but all she does is wanting to be with her lover。 Damn woman you got power you could do anything all you do is sit in your room and wait for things to happen。 I loved Laila in book1 so much。 She’s very powerful character in it but here you’re just a pathetic queen。 This whole books feels bullshit to me。 All the bad things happen in castle, all they do is nothing。 I didn’t like any of the character。 The only th I liked book 1 so much but I’m hating book2。 Lilac the queen wants to help the kingdom but all she does is wanting to be with her lover。 Damn woman you got power you could do anything all you do is sit in your room and wait for things to happen。 I loved Laila in book1 so much。 She’s very powerful character in it but here you’re just a pathetic queen。 This whole books feels bullshit to me。 All the bad things happen in castle, all they do is nothing。 I didn’t like any of the character。 The only thing I liked about this book is ending。 The way author make characters choose love and their kingdom is good。 Apart nothing in this book made me like it。 。。。more

book 1 was way better- i feel like this book was just a filler to get to the ending。 the ending also sounded like a summary, which disappointed me since i've been looking forward to the ending since book 1。 it could've been written a lot better, so the book was just okay。 book 1 was way better- i feel like this book was just a filler to get to the ending。 the ending also sounded like a summary, which disappointed me since i've been looking forward to the ending since book 1。 it could've been written a lot better, so the book was just okay。 。。。more

- I wish I liked this duology, but I just couldn’t。 The characters weren’t deep just like the last one, the random dumping of the world that felt unnatural, and it’s extremely generic plot。 And that says something。- gonna go start my next book so I can finish this damn 2021 reading challenge 💃🏻

The last chapter was kinda cute, I guess

omg this was so good i cant believe this series is over now。 this book was fantastic, it definitely kept up the suspense and kept me on my toes with the mystery of what was going on。 i had a great time, there was lots of lilac and cal angst ofc but it was so good and i loved the way everything ended im so happy with it。 the only thing tho is that i wish we had gotten en epilogue from the future just to see how things are going。

Disappointing。 Yet another book drags through the ‘We can never be together。 He will love another。 She will be with someone else,’ for 250-300 pages, and then 50 pages before the end, the author realizes that there are too many threads left to untangle, so he/she then rushes to conveniently wrap everything up quickly。 I admit that I like tidy happy endings。 I like my stories to be wrapped up in a bow。 BUT I like my books to progress naturally and to not end abruptly。 In this case, a plot line th Disappointing。 Yet another book drags through the ‘We can never be together。 He will love another。 She will be with someone else,’ for 250-300 pages, and then 50 pages before the end, the author realizes that there are too many threads left to untangle, so he/she then rushes to conveniently wrap everything up quickly。 I admit that I like tidy happy endings。 I like my stories to be wrapped up in a bow。 BUT I like my books to progress naturally and to not end abruptly。 In this case, a plot line that was set in motion before the book even began concludes in a single paragraph。 A paragraph。 That’s it。 A paragraph of coincidence。 I could have easily enjoyed another 100 or so pages for a more satisfying conclusion。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 What in the world of fantasy did I just read😳。If I could take back the moment I decided to read this book I would, but now I have to live with this knowledge。 I'm very sorry @author, bcs I really don't like criticizing people's hard work but this, this was just wrong, and confusing and clearly impossible, and the ending was just ludicrous, because no man, talk more of a king would let another man's child be his heir when he's very much potent。。。 I rest my case😌 What in the world of fantasy did I just read😳。If I could take back the moment I decided to read this book I would, but now I have to live with this knowledge。 I'm very sorry @author, bcs I really don't like criticizing people's hard work but this, this was just wrong, and confusing and clearly impossible, and the ending was just ludicrous, because no man, talk more of a king would let another man's child be his heir when he's very much potent。。。 I rest my case😌 。。。more

Very disappointing。 All the characters did the whole books was complain how they couldn’t be together and be jealous。 The side characters were terrible and had no depth。 Lack of any action or excitement。 Glad this is the final book of series because the author gave up on the storyline。 Final come t is the ending=ridiculous in a bad way。

It was such a frustrating book to read。 The auction didn't really happen until 3/4 of the book and only then did it span maybe one to two pages。 I wish lilac would have really developed into an assassin Queen but in this book she was cast off and portrayed as a weak female that wasn't really redeemed at all。 The ending also was frustrating because it just seemed to wrap around itself。 It was a bittersweet ending but I just did not like it。 It was such a frustrating book to read。 The auction didn't really happen until 3/4 of the book and only then did it span maybe one to two pages。 I wish lilac would have really developed into an assassin Queen but in this book she was cast off and portrayed as a weak female that wasn't really redeemed at all。 The ending also was frustrating because it just seemed to wrap around itself。 It was a bittersweet ending but I just did not like it。 。。。more

uh maybe 3。25* - some of it was good, and it was honestly kinda entertaining at some parts, but the fact that the two mcs were virtually never together meant that we got almost no interaction between the two, which also meant that there was a lot of telling us how sad and annoyed and in love cal and lilac were that was virtually never actually shown, whether through actions or internal monologuelilac was also just as annoying for the majority of this as she was in the first book - she doesn’t se uh maybe 3。25* - some of it was good, and it was honestly kinda entertaining at some parts, but the fact that the two mcs were virtually never together meant that we got almost no interaction between the two, which also meant that there was a lot of telling us how sad and annoyed and in love cal and lilac were that was virtually never actually shown, whether through actions or internal monologuelilac was also just as annoying for the majority of this as she was in the first book - she doesn’t seem to be in the “not like other girls” phase anymore but she was so jealous and bitter that it made her pov chapters at the start and middle of the book really annoying the deaths also seemed so underplayed especially with lilac - she didnt even seem sad about the deaths of people she liked, and she didn’t seem to care about being blamed for them all that much??the pacing and plotting was also really off - this felt like a second book of a trilogy or something for the first 75% of it, with almost no plot until the ending that happened out of nowhere (I guessed the crow thing like 50% into the book but there was absolutely no build up to it - we had no plot happening until it did), which lead to the ending of the plot feeling really rushed and lacking any real effect (even though one of my the characters I actually liked from book one ended up… the way they did), and the actual ending of the book feeling unfinished and unrealistic, seemingly glossing over all the complications that the characters had spent the entirety of the book complaining about with a few random plot conveniences and the strangest off-page insta love I’ve ever seen with whatever hansen had going onalso unrelated but there were like 4 or 5 different audiobook narrators and the main 2 were luckily ok but the others annoyed me to no end it made the book even more frustrating 。。。more

I hate to say it, but this book was just boring。 Lilac was just a completely different character to the first book。 I also found her quite rude。 And the ending was over so quickly that it left me thinking, “Was that really it????”
