Summary

In the sequel to New York Times bestselling A Curse So Dark and Lonely, Brigid Kemmerer returns to the world of Emberfall in a lush fantasy where friends become foes and love blooms in the darkest of places。

Find the heir, win the crown。
The curse is finally broken, but Prince Rhen of Emberfall faces darker troubles still。 Rumors circulate that he is not the true heir and that forbidden magic has been unleashed in Emberfall。 Although Rhen has Harper by his side, his guardsman Grey is missing, leaving more questions than answers。

Win the crown, save the kingdom。
Grey may be the heir, but he doesn't want anyone to know his secret。 On the run since he destroyed Lilith, he has no desire to challenge Rhen--until Karis Luran once again threatens to take Emberfall by force。 Her own daughter Lia Mara sees the flaws in her mother's violent plan, but can she convince Grey to stand against Rhen, even for the good of Emberfall?

The heart-pounding, compulsively readable saga continues as loyalties are tested and new love blooms in a kingdom on the brink of war。

Am I missing out? Is it worth slogging through this book for the 3rd? I'm 40% through this and I'm basically forcing myself to read it, in the hopes of scenes with Harper, Grey and Rhen (mostly Harper and grey) My favourite parts of A curse so dark and lonely was Harper and greys scenes together (not to say I didn't like Rhen and Grey or Rhen and Harper) This feels like I've lost the characters I loved in the first book, Rhen a psyco and Harper isn't exactly doing much about it Maybe I shouldn't Am I missing out? This book took me a second to get into, not because it’s slow but because I am so busy, but by the end I stayed up all last night to finish it。I enjoyed the characters and their struggles even more in this book than I did in the last one (for the most part)。 I really felt like this story could stand well on its own。 Like the last one, most of the plot twists were a little predictable, or I am just really good at guessing what’s going to happen, but they way they were presented was so well done t This book took me a second to get into, not because it’s slow but because I am so busy, but by the end I stayed up all last night to finish it。I enjoyed the characters and their struggles even more in this book than I did in the last one (for the most part)。 I really felt like this story could stand well on its own。 Like the last one, most of the plot twists were a little predictable, or I am just really good at guessing what’s going to happen, but they way they were presented was so well done that it outweighed the predictability。 。。。more

I felt so bored by this book。 The only reason I finished it was because of a promise of a better 3rd book。 The last chapter was pretty much the only thing that interested me。 It was hard to fall in love with Harper as a main character in the 1st book and then pretty much have her completely disappear in this one。 Fingers crossed Book #3 is better。

Okey, so the reason i gave this one 3⭐️ ( it should have been 2 🙃 ) while i loved the first one, is that i couldn’t click with grey and lia mara for the first 200 ( which i read in more then a month) for me it was super boring, nothing happened。 and then all of the sudden i couldn’t put it down, lia mara became interesting and i started liking her, even though i knew what way the story was taking, i loved how the author wrote it。Another reason why i didn’t like this one is the lack of harper and Okey, so the reason i gave this one 3⭐️ ( it should have been 2 🙃 ) while i loved the first one, is that i couldn’t click with grey and lia mara for the first 200 ( which i read in more then a month) for me it was super boring, nothing happened。 and then all of the sudden i couldn’t put it down, lia mara became interesting and i started liking her, even though i knew what way the story was taking, i loved how the author wrote it。Another reason why i didn’t like this one is the lack of harper and rhen i missed them here, and the way rhen was portrayed in the begging made me hate the author and not him cuz that’s not our rhen 😭😂。 But the end was so good that i really didn’t expect it and everything made sense 。Now i can’t wait to read the final book in this trilogy 😍。 。。。more

Overall Rating: 3。5 ⭑ (rounding down to 3 on Goodreads) I was really looking forward to the second installment of the Cursebreakers series because the first book was one of the best YA fantasy novels I’ve read in a long time, and particularly, one of the better (loosely based on) "Beauty and the Beast" renditions。 We left off with Lilith being defeated by Grey, but Harper and Rhen are recovering with their new reality while not knowing where Grey is。 Meanwhile, Grey is in hiding because he learn Overall Rating: 3。5 ⭑ (rounding down to 3 on Goodreads) I was really looking forward to the second installment of the Cursebreakers series because the first book was one of the best YA fantasy novels I’ve read in a long time, and particularly, one of the better (loosely based on) "Beauty and the Beast" renditions。 We left off with Lilith being defeated by Grey, but Harper and Rhen are recovering with their new reality while not knowing where Grey is。 Meanwhile, Grey is in hiding because he learns that he is the rightful heir of Emberfall and possesses magic, but he doesn’t want to threaten Rhen’s claim。 Eventually, Grey is found and captured, but is forced to use his magic to escape because we see the darkest side of Rhen possible。 He escapes to Shyl Shallow with a cast of interesting characters, including the brutal queen of Shyl Shallow’s peace seeking daughter Lia Mara, Grey’s friend from when he was hiding out (Tycho), Jake and Noah (Harper’s brother and his boyfriend), and Iisak, a new creature we are introduced to。 I really liked some of the new characters, but the main characters from the previous book felt like vastly different people and the story was taken in a completely new (and frankly, unwanted) way。 It took me a really long time to get into the story because I felt like the plot floundered for awhile and it definitely did not elicit the same feelings or vibe that the first book did。 I still look forward to the next book, because I want to know how it all ends, but this book was very lukewarm compared to the first, which unfortunately seems to be a trend this year with series not living up to their first books。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 When I read the first book, there was so much I loved about it。 The strong characters, the emotional connections, the story and all the plot twists。 I hated Lilith with a passion。 This book felt so empty to me, I was so confused on where the Rhen and Harper I had just spent a whole book getting to know were。 Grey’s character was, and still is wonderful, in this book he got stronger and the development was enticing to read, I loved Lia Mara’s character as well, she was strong and her outlook on t When I read the first book, there was so much I loved about it。 The strong characters, the emotional connections, the story and all the plot twists。 I hated Lilith with a passion。 This book felt so empty to me, I was so confused on where the Rhen and Harper I had just spent a whole book getting to know were。 Grey’s character was, and still is wonderful, in this book he got stronger and the development was enticing to read, I loved Lia Mara’s character as well, she was strong and her outlook on the world was one that I enjoyed to watch develop as she found herself better。RHEN AND HARPER THOUGH, what happened????The way they were portrayed hurt to read so much, Harper was there in presence only, and Rhen was unfittingly cruel。 Towards the first half of the book it felt like the conflict was forced and completely uncharacteristic for the characters we knew in the first book。 Towards the end of the book I thought the whole book would turn around, things were going well。 Grey and Lia finally had some standing but of course it’s not a happy ending 🥲After reading some of the reviews other readers have posted, one person stated that they were able to enjoy this book after disregarding there was a prequel and reading it as if we had no background information。 I agree, doing so makes this book feel much more righteous。 But I couldn’t think of doing it that way because the author DID write a prequel, and this was not the first look we got at the characters。The first book and all it’s introduction is valuable and this book not being able to portray that was what ended up making it 3/5 for me。 。。。more

Both got super 'protective' not letting Feyre/Harper leave。 Working with crazy bitch women i。e。 Lilith and Ianthe。 Both being turned on by their own country/court。 Both totally turning on their previous head guard。 There were just too many similarities for me。 That epilogue definitely made me want to read more。 。。。more

I liked this book better than the first one。 So Rhen was not my favorite character in this book and luckily although he is talked about it a lot, he doesn't make that many appearances。 I loved reading from Lia Mara's point of view just because I feel like she was the most realistic character in any fantasy book。 Not like the typical MC girl。 Also, Grey was just so amazing in this book。 It was like in this book you got to see the softer side of him。 (view spoiler)[Close to the ending there's a pl I liked this book better than the first one。 So Rhen was not my favorite character in this book and luckily although he is talked about it a lot, he doesn't make that many appearances。 I loved reading from Lia Mara's point of view just because I feel like she was the most realistic character in any fantasy book。 Not like the typical MC girl。 Also, Grey was just so amazing in this book。 It was like in this book you got to see the softer side of him。 (view spoiler)[Close to the ending there's a plot twist and Karis Luran FINALLy got what was coming to her (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

I was a little bit worried I might not like this book as much as I loved the first one because the Beauty and the Beast storyline ends with the first book, but I was SO wrong! This book is AMAZING。 I had to hold myself down to not read it all in one sitting, and I loved all the new characters。 My new fear? That the next book is the last one, I won’t survive it!

this was a slump to get through。。。this whole book was so so boring, nothing interesting happened, all it comprised of was people walking to different kingdoms。 the characterisation in this was WAY off。 harper and rhen were acting so weird? i honestly have no clue if we’re even supposed to like them or dislike them at this point? like are they supposed to be villains? grey is obviously the best character, he is the most interesting with the best development。 he was my favourite in book 1 and book this was a slump to get through。。。this whole book was so so boring, nothing interesting happened, all it comprised of was people walking to different kingdoms。 the characterisation in this was WAY off。 harper and rhen were acting so weird? i honestly have no clue if we’re even supposed to like them or dislike them at this point? like are they supposed to be villains? grey is obviously the best character, he is the most interesting with the best development。 he was my favourite in book 1 and book 2 as well。 i think lia mara was okay too, i just felt like her whole character was the “my sister is better than me in every way and i’m the forgettable one” trope which ended with “oh wait maybe i am the better one” trope。 (i will be honest though, grey and lia mara’s romance was quite nice and i was subtly warmed into it)the plot。 it is good。。 but nothing really changed。 the last book ended with the whole “grey is the lost heir” and by the end this book it was “grey is still the heir but he has a girlfriend now”。 maybe i’m wrong and i’m being a bit harsh but i think because the book was so slow, everything seemed worse。by the end of this, i didn’t care much about taking in any information, i just wanted to reach the end。 i don’t care much about what is happening or what might happen next。 iisak is living legend also 。。。more

Honestly, it wasn't bad。 I just expected more because of the first book in the series。 It focused on new characters, which is great, but it felt like Harper and Rhen changed drastically with no explenation。 Even if I saw them from other points of view, they did not seem like themselves at all。 Almost like they flickered so the new people can shine。 What I enjoyed, though, is the better understanding of life in this fantasy world。 And of the magic in it。 Also, the new characters are well explored Honestly, it wasn't bad。 I just expected more because of the first book in the series。 It focused on new characters, which is great, but it felt like Harper and Rhen changed drastically with no explenation。 Even if I saw them from other points of view, they did not seem like themselves at all。 Almost like they flickered so the new people can shine。 What I enjoyed, though, is the better understanding of life in this fantasy world。 And of the magic in it。 Also, the new characters are well explored。 I just missed the old ones I got attached to。 Quite of a plot twist at the end, brace yourself :)All in all, it was a good story plus a quick read。 And it's worth reading it for the last book in the series。 。。。more

Since I mentioned in my review of the first book that Grey was my favorite character, it’s not surprising that I liked this book a lot more。I feel like I’m the only one who thinks this, but I’m glad I picked up this book。 I think because I wasn’t the biggest fan of the first book or the characters (except for Grey) I did not mind how the author has portrayed them。Although I understand why people would not be satisfied of the first book’s characters’ portrayal。I enjoyed reading about the new fema Since I mentioned in my review of the first book that Grey was my favorite character, it’s not surprising that I liked this book a lot more。I feel like I’m the only one who thinks this, but I’m glad I picked up this book。 I think because I wasn’t the biggest fan of the first book or the characters (except for Grey) I did not mind how the author has portrayed them。Although I understand why people would not be satisfied of the first book’s characters’ portrayal。I enjoyed reading about the new female protagonist。 She was strong and clever but in a way I have not read about before, I related to her on so many levels。 Also, a huge A+ on character development! My heart was swelling with pride by the end。Even though I did not like Rhen and Harper all that much, I still did not like how the author made them act so out of character in this book。 It’s like they had gone through some major change, it made the reader feel like they didn’t know them at all。 Maybe this all is explained in the third book?I still am conflicted on whether or not I should read the last one。 At this point I feel like I’ve invested so much time that I have to see how the story ends, but at the same time I’m kind of scared at how Grey, Lia Mara and all the characters that I’ve grown to love in this book will be portrayed in the next one。 。。。more

I liked it。 First I red the comments and I got a little confused and I thought I wound not like it especially when there is only one chapter for Harper and Rhen but it was nice in other ways 。spoilers 📢📢I wished Rhen didn't become the person he is now。 in the first book he was nice and kind and smart , but in this one I still can't believe he didn't figure everything out。Harper deserves much more than just one chapter。I honestly don't get Gray。 I mean he should have been honest with his brother。 I liked it。 First I red the comments and I got a little confused and I thought I wound not like it especially when there is only one chapter for Harper and Rhen but it was nice in other ways 。spoilers 📢📢I wished Rhen didn't become the person he is now。 in the first book he was nice and kind and smart , but in this one I still can't believe he didn't figure everything out。Harper deserves much more than just one chapter。I honestly don't get Gray。 I mean he should have been honest with his brother。 everything would have been different and they didn't have to become strongers toward each other。 I really hope this will change in the next book。 。。。more
