Keep your brain young, healthy, and sharp with this science-driven guide to protecting your mind from decline by neurosurgeon and CNN chief medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta。

Throughout our life, we look for ways to keep our mind sharp and effortlessly productive。 Now, globetrotting neurosurgeon Dr。 Sanjay Gupta offers insights from top scientists all over the world, whose cutting-edge research can help you heighten and protect brain function and maintain cognitive health at any age。

Keep Sharp debunks common myths about aging and cognitive decline, explores whether there’s a “best” diet or exercise regimen for the brain, and explains whether it’s healthier to play video games that test memory and processing speed, or to engage in more social interaction。 Discover what we can learn from “super-brained” people who are in their eighties and nineties with no signs of slowing down—and whether there are truly any benefits to drugs, supplements, and vitamins。 Dr。 Gupta also addresses brain disease, particularly Alzheimer’s, answers all your questions about the signs and symptoms, and shows how to ward against it and stay healthy while caring for a partner in cognitive decline。 He likewise provides you with a personalized twelve-week program featuring practical strategies to strengthen your brain every day。

Keep Sharp is the only owner’s manual you’ll need to keep your brain young and healthy regardless of your age!

This is an excellent guidebook to keeping your brain (and the rest of your body) healthy。 Dr。 Gupta gives great summaries of the various kinds of cognitive impairments and how to change your lifestyle and diet to best avoid them。 I recommend this to anyone who has concerns about how to keep a clear head and memory while getting older。

Gupta summarizes the latest scientific medical studies that have been proven to protect and improve brain function throughout one’s life。 He has organized them in five major categories。 They include: 1) exercise five days a week; 2) develop a sense of purpose that may include learning and discovery; 3) make sure one is getting enough sleep as sleep helps the brain to refresh itself; 4) eat nutritiously; and 5) develop strong social connections with others。Gupta discusses the increasing incidence Gupta summarizes the latest scientific medical studies that have been proven to protect and improve brain function throughout one’s life。 He has organized them in five major categories。 They include: 1) exercise five days a week; 2) develop a sense of purpose that may include learning and discovery; 3) make sure one is getting enough sleep as sleep helps the brain to refresh itself; 4) eat nutritiously; and 5) develop strong social connections with others。Gupta discusses the increasing incidence of dementia in older patients, particularly due to Alzheimer’s which accounts for more than half of all dementia cases。 The purpose of this book is to urge people to take action now to prevent one from irrevocably developing the disease。 Alzheimer’s is not inevitable, even when one may be genetically predisposed to it。 There are even small actions that can make a big difference。 For instance, the brain is comprised of 73% water and it takes only 2% dehydration to affect one’s attention, memory and other cognitive skills。 Highly recommend。 。。。more

Some interesting new information and research referenced。 Mostly the advise just backs up everything you have ever heard or read somewhere else。 In some parts there was a little too much name dropping of famous folks for my personal taste, but maybe that adds credibility for other readers。 I enjoyed it and thought it was very solid。

You can make your brain healthier is the main take away!Brain health has many more elements than I realized including links to complex work, social connections, sleep, exercise and eating and perhaps less link to genetics than many people realize。 The way the author explains the elements brings it all together well。 Some parts of the book are technical but overall very interesting and digestible。

Good Advise for LivingThe book is focused on brain health but really involves total body and mind advice。 Everything about the way you live, eat and exercise is related to the state of brain vitality。A good review of what an individual should be doing to live a healthy life。

Interesting book on the latest brain research, the causes of Alzheimer’s and dementia, and what you can do to build brain resiliency as you age。 No surprises here: exercise in a variety of ways, keep learning new things, eat a healthy diet avoiding sugar and processed foods, stay social with a large network of people, and live with intent。 Worth reviewing。

Dr。 Sanjay Gupta is a neurosurgeon and most well known as CNN medical news director。 He has been pretty ubiquitous on the channel over the past year, because of Covid。 I like him in general。 He presents data, offers opinion but is honest where there is uncertainty。 Added to my respect for him is the topic matter of the brain and more specifically memory。 I have no Alzheimer’s in my family and my mom died at 93 and my father of an MI at 80 though he smoked quite a bit。 My memory does not seem gre Dr。 Sanjay Gupta is a neurosurgeon and most well known as CNN medical news director。 He has been pretty ubiquitous on the channel over the past year, because of Covid。 I like him in general。 He presents data, offers opinion but is honest where there is uncertainty。 Added to my respect for him is the topic matter of the brain and more specifically memory。 I have no Alzheimer’s in my family and my mom died at 93 and my father of an MI at 80 though he smoked quite a bit。 My memory does not seem great however。 Couldn’t write an autobiography if someone offered me 1M dollars。 Other folks remind me they already know stuff I’m telling them。 That being said I’m not forgetting regular things or news or math or passwords etc。 so ways to improve my memory would be nice。 This book covers the brain and the first fifth details the components of the brain and how it works。 I guess you have to start with this but not sure it helps。 Most folks would be tuned out thru this part wanting to get to the good stuff。 So what’s the good stuff to lead to better brain health?。 None of it sounds like rocket science or even new。 He talks about eating better in a pretty standard way emphasizing the Mediterranean diet。 Sleeping better is key and tips for that are again fairly standard (stop caffeine after 2p, no electronics in bed, white noise, no food after 7, meditate)。 Exercise is emphasized as a key to brain health, about an hour a day with some sweating involved。 This seems to be above the standard 30 minute walking daily we are used to hearing。 Finally social interaction, which we have had less of the past year, is promoted as a key ingredient to improve brain health。 So I’m going to work on my sleep with no caffeine after 2p, try a little meditation and not take a kindle to bed and increase my activity。 I liked the book, though there did not seem to be major new revelations, it was nice to have this source with these areas all addressed in one place。 The brain is a terrible thing to waste as those commercials said and as we get older it becomes even more crucial to a better life。 。。。more

A great listen; reinforced much of what I already know: avoid eating crap, exercise physically and mentally, enjoy friends and most importantly live life。 But I also gained a wealth of knowledge about the aging brain and the myriad of variables which at times was bit gloom and doom but at others (and the majority of the listen) was enlightening。

A great book to improve your life---how to live better to ensure you stave off dementia and Alzheimer。 It is peppered with lots of studies to back this up。 Dr。 Gupta explains what one can do。 There are basically five musts: keep moving one's body, stay mentally engaged, sleep well, eat nutritionally well (moderation) and stay connected with others。 I will keep this book out as a reference book to look at from time to time to see if I am on track。 A great book to improve your life---how to live better to ensure you stave off dementia and Alzheimer。 It is peppered with lots of studies to back this up。 Dr。 Gupta explains what one can do。 There are basically five musts: keep moving one's body, stay mentally engaged, sleep well, eat nutritionally well (moderation) and stay connected with others。 I will keep this book out as a reference book to look at from time to time to see if I am on track。 。。。more

I’m not much of a nonfiction reader (although I’m trying to do better in that genre), but I have always respected the work of Sanjay Gupta and my IRL Book Club wanted to read Keep Sharp as a group。 What an informative book it was。 We all took the quick self assessment and our discussion was off and running。 It was eye-opening to realize much of our life choices in our thirties impacted what was to come。 We are told that for many ailments we suffer (skin damage, heart issues), but this was one mo I’m not much of a nonfiction reader (although I’m trying to do better in that genre), but I have always respected the work of Sanjay Gupta and my IRL Book Club wanted to read Keep Sharp as a group。 What an informative book it was。 We all took the quick self assessment and our discussion was off and running。 It was eye-opening to realize much of our life choices in our thirties impacted what was to come。 We are told that for many ailments we suffer (skin damage, heart issues), but this was one more reminder (which I promptly shared with my 25 year old)。 Many group members are already making changes in their lives using his Five Pillars。 Gupta gives you concrete suggestions so you can start improving your life today and includes a 12 week program guide to get you going! As more Americans (including me and most of my friends) reach a certain age demographic, a widespread new fear has taken root: Am I, or a loved one, going to one day be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or some other dementia? Lots of important information whether or not one is experiencing signs of dementia。 I had only thought proper nutrition and exercise was for physical fitness, but Dr。 Gupta emphasizes how important both are for mental health as well。 The book is divided into three parts。 the first covers the four types of dementia and the Five Pillars of mental health。 The second expands on the Five Pillars with a focus on nutrition and provides lists and suggestions for foods to eat and foods to avoid for good Lots of important information whether or not one is experiencing signs of dementia。 I had only thought proper nutrition and exercise was for physical fitness, but Dr。 Gupta emphasizes how important both are for mental health as well。 The book is divided into three parts。 the first covers the four types of dementia and the Five Pillars of mental health。 The second expands on the Five Pillars with a focus on nutrition and provides lists and suggestions for foods to eat and foods to avoid for good cognition。 The last part goes into dementia diagnosis, treatment, and help for caregivers。 I highly recommend this for anyone who wants a sharper brain。 。。。more

For the most part, I listened to the audio of this book。 I found the information on the brain to be really fascinating, and I definitely think about a lot of the things he discusses, whether it's food or exercise。 Reading this happened to coincide with a thorough physical and having to start medications for the first time in my life, so it really hit home! I appreciated the part about dementia at the end, but was surprised that it took up so much of the book。 I found the beginning so interesting For the most part, I listened to the audio of this book。 I found the information on the brain to be really fascinating, and I definitely think about a lot of the things he discusses, whether it's food or exercise。 Reading this happened to coincide with a thorough physical and having to start medications for the first time in my life, so it really hit home! I really appreciate how the WHY was covered at the start if the book and throughout。 This helps you visualize and understand the impact of your lifestyle decisions rather than thinking a vague “don’t do this because it’s bad。” The WHY approach resonates with me。。。Interesting, fantastically educational & informative。。。 very much enjoyed this one。

Very informative and interesting read。 Although a medical book by nature, when describing specifics regarding how the brain works, Gupta usually provides metaphors along side to help the reader better understand。 The book is not preachy but pretty straightforward。 The author explains how the brain works, and what each individual can do to help improve their own brain health; he describes the heart-brain connection; and provides solid, sound suggestions on how to improve one's brain health。 He al Very informative and interesting read。 Although a medical book by nature, when describing specifics regarding how the brain works, Gupta usually provides metaphors along side to help the reader better understand。 The book is not preachy but pretty straightforward。 The author explains how the brain works, and what each individual can do to help improve their own brain health; he describes the heart-brain connection; and provides solid, sound suggestions on how to improve one's brain health。 He also explains what individuals can do when diagnosed with Alzheimers, and what works and doesn't work, he does not paint the picture with all rainbows and unicorns。 Although not in school, I found myself taking notes to help me remember key points (ironic since he goes into detail about Alzheimers and dementia)。 。。。more
