Such a fun read 。 Granted , that applies to the whole series , but this book was just something else 。

As always, a fantastic story, full of intrigue, sarcasm, much needed reform and a strong young woman。

3,5 stars!I love Enola as usual, but this story felt too short。 Especially the mystery and solution, they felt a bit rushed。 I especially wanted more scenes with Florence Nightingale, Enola, and Sherlock。 They seem like a great trio, but unfortunately they had too little time together。 I wish Florence can share more of her time in the war, the political scandals, etc。 The solution was too simple, IMO, and oversimplified。 However, I can't wait to see what's waiting for Enola in the next book, now 3,5 stars!I love Enola as usual, but this story felt too short。 Especially the mystery and solution, they felt a bit rushed。 I especially wanted more scenes with Florence Nightingale, Enola, and Sherlock。 They seem like a great trio, but unfortunately they had too little time together。 I wish Florence can share more of her time in the war, the political scandals, etc。 The solution was too simple, IMO, and oversimplified。 However, I can't wait to see what's waiting for Enola in the next book, now that Sherlock is soooo close at her heel。 。。。more

Very odd story concerning the Crimean war and all the graft and all the shenanigans that took place during that foolishness, 35 years later。 I found it hard to get into the story, but it was well told and beautifully read。

This book is about things that took place during the Crimean War (30 years past)。 I don't know much about the Crimean War and Florence Nightingale。 I think I should learn a little bit about that time period。 This book is about things that took place during the Crimean War (30 years past)。 I don't know much about the Crimean War and Florence Nightingale。 I think I should learn a little bit about that time period。 。。。more

Needed something light。 I could see the encoding in the Ribbon, but poor Enola was just too tired。 I am not sure I was expecting the bird to be a master spy, but I would have expected her to connect Enola to her mom。 I guess they don’t want that structure for her。 Mom would complicate Ebola’s life。

With every book, I like Enola and this series more and more。 This time she is out to rescue her kidnapped landlady, who is given a very interesting backstory。 Add Florence Nightingale and her brother Sherlock, and you've got one winner of a read。 With every book, I like Enola and this series more and more。 This time she is out to rescue her kidnapped landlady, who is given a very interesting backstory。 Add Florence Nightingale and her brother Sherlock, and you've got one winner of a read。 。。。more

Enola makes me so happy。 Just。。。 her heart and her mind and just, everything。 I love her and I love these books, and now there's only two left and I want to read them, but I also don't want to because then it will be over! And Sherlock (because you know that even in this book series where he's a bit dimwitted about what a woman truly needs, I still love him。) Every book gives me more hope that he might finally reach a place where Enola could trust him。 And I mean really trust him, with her freedo Enola makes me so happy。 Just。。。 her heart and her mind and just, everything。 I love her and I love these books, and now there's only two left and I want to read them, but I also don't want to because then it will be over! And Sherlock (because you know that even in this book series where he's a bit dimwitted about what a woman truly needs, I still love him。) Every book gives me more hope that he might finally reach a place where Enola could trust him。 And I mean really trust him, with her freedom and all。 To not find her and then thrust her to a terrible boarding school。And I love Florence Nightingale in this book。 I love how Enola worked her way into seeing her, and I love how she was portrayed。 And I also love that, at the end, she gave Sherlock a few things to think about when it comes to Enola and what might actually be best for her (hence my hope that he may finally come around)。 And her comment about Mycroft! HA! I love it! I also love how she kind of hinted that, if Mycroft weren't the one in charge of Enola's affairs, then maybe she would've informed Sherlock of Enola's whereabouts from time to time if she became aware of them。 Just further proof that there is hope for Sherlock。。。 though not his brother。 (At least in my opinion, I could be wrong about that。)Enola, as always, still has a lot to learn and a lot of growing to do。 At fourteen, that's understandable。 But she's still already so smart and so good and so brave。 I imagine if this series somehow continued to see her as an adult, we'd get to see someone quite extraordinary。And as for my comment left when I finished reading up to 65%。。。 people, you need to read this series just for the sake of reading that scene。 (It's probably only that funny to me。 Maybe。 Idk)。 But I laughed so hard。 (And I was at work, so I had to try and not laugh too loud, which was hard。) But I loved it and laughed as Enola made her desperate escape。Five solid stars。 And onto the next one! 。。。more

Bringing Florence Nightingale in and having her put Sherlock (and by default, Mycroft) in his place was pure bliss。 This one may well be my favorite of these mysteries。 I also learned a thing or two about the Crimean War。 And, I especially appreciated Enola Holmes' love for lilacs。 I cannot wait to read further in the series as I am quite concerned for poor Enola now and I would like to know where she landed! Another fun adventureI admit。 It was pretty cool how the author wove such a famous person like Florence Nightingale into this story。 I really enjoyed the role she plays and it's strangely fitting。 The idea was fun and creative。 Enola, as always, is a fun character in herself, but she still has a lot to learn。 Sooner or later, she has to realize no one is alone, not even her brother, the great Sherlock Holmes。 Christa Another fun adventureI admit。 It was pretty cool how the author wove such a famous person like Florence Nightingale into this story。 I really enjoyed the role she plays and it's strangely fitting。 The idea was fun and creative。 Enola, as always, is a fun character in herself, but she still has a lot to learn。 Sooner or later, she has to realize no one is alone, not even her brother, the great Sherlock Holmes。 Christa 。。。more

Readers will enjoy The Case of the Cryptic Crinoline and the meetings with Florence Nightingale。 。。。more

Sherlock as to what to expect from those boarding schools that Mycroft was so antsy to dump Enola to。。。 the strong~minded woman also admitted to Sherlock that she knew Lady Eudoria Vernet Holmes and even admired her。 。。。more

But the time has come to tell Enola of her past because whatever "message" the thugs want from her she has no idea what they are referring to。 Mrs。 Tupper's husband was in the Crimean War。 As was often the case she followed her husband to the front because there was no way to send money home and it was the only way for her husband to support her。 When he was injured in Scutari, Turkey, Mrs。 Tupper met Florence Nightingale, who was trying to help care for the wounded。 Byzantine ideas about health care meant that the injured men were left alone all night, the nurses only allowed to work during the day。 Mrs。 Tupper's husband died one night and Florence Nightingale took pity on the young pregnant war widow who had gone deaf from the bombs at the front。 She gave her a new outfit and money enough to return home to England。 Sadly Mrs。 Tupper lost the baby and in her despair throughy no more of the nice nurse who helped her return home。 But as far as she knew there was no message。 Yes, she was given a piece of paper, but she can't read and got ride of it。 But apparantly that message is very important because Mrs。 Tupper is soon kidnapped and Enola is demanding to see the bedridden Florence Nightingale because no one takes her landlady and gets away with it!In a series that is peopled with fictional characters it's always a bit of a risk to bring in an actual historical figure。 People have preconceived notions about what they were like and unless it's a small cameo there's more chance for it to go wrong。 Now I'm sure some people actually view Sherlock Holmes as real and hopefully love the way Nancy Springer has portrayed him like I do, but he's real in a different way than say Florence Nightingale。 And that was really the sticking point for me in this book。 I loved the idea of Florence Nightingale being a spy, I loved the coded message in the crinoline composed of embroidered flowers, once more showing how women can subvert what society thinks of them by using home arts to convey important information, but it just didn't quite work。 The version of Florence Nightingale that I have in my head really comes from two sources, Drunk History and Victoria。 I know these aren't probably the best sources, but Paget Brewster covered the whole Florence Nightingale taking to her bed and ruling her little world from the comfort of her mattress so I at least knew about that weird little historical detail that actually plays an important role in Enola's case。 My problem was more with how Enola talked about Florence being an invalid than necessarily in how Florence herself was handled。 Enola views Florence as a strange eccentric who likes to hold everyone under her power by claiming to be an invalid。 Of course she eventually admits that her "every inference concerning the remarkable Florence Nightingale proved wrong, as became apparent to [her] within a few minutes。" Florence just didn't want to waste time on social niceties and just wanted to get down to work。 OK, fine。 That's totally believable。 What wasn't cool was that Enola's view of invalids was so negative。 Yes, she's from the upper classes where invalids are more likely highly strung people looking for attention, but that doesn't mean they can be all classified as malingerers。 Her contempt for the ill, and let us make it very clear, we actually don't know if Florence Nightingale was ill or not, left a bad taste in my mouth that all the flowery codes couldn't ameliorate。 。。。more
